I'm no expert in advising you but I personally use semaphore kernel and I really love it! Franco is the best for saving up juice in your phone! And if your a extreme overclock fan then faux must be your choice! For gaming matrix kernel or ma1rix kernel is the real deal. Note i guess they are still working on 4.3 bootloaders so just check their threads out and confirm that it is for 4.3 bl or not.

after 4.2.1, i cant find a kernel that will work with stock rom that allows overclocking?
Motley
I really like Metallice's motley kernel, located in nexus 7 android developemnet.
Edit: Click my Sig pic for a link
trinity kernel works fine too
I'm loving the trinity kernel myself! It is blazing fast at 1.7Ghz. (gets a little warm but other than that it is just awesome) No issues so far using stock 4.2.1 ROM
Stock ROM, as in not rooted? If you are running a custom 'stock' ROM, as in you flashed it to your device than any number of good kernels will do what you want.
But at a minimum you need to be rooted and have a custom recovery installed.

hi guys
my Nexus 7 32 Gb will ship in 3 days and i wanted to aks some questions :
First One: Should i stick to Stuck Rom or a Custom Rom?!
i heard that Android 4.2 has some really issues and random restart is that true?!
Second One : i need to install a good kernel on this one and according to Benchmarks that Nexus only scores <4000 i need a fast yet stable and lag free and of course power saver kernel can u name one?!
Third One : Does Unlocking Bootloader Avoids Guarantee ?! i had one before but just for 2 days so i unlocked it then rooted it then relocked it so if i do this i will keep my Guarantee right?!
and does Custom Roms needs Unlock bootloaders?!
i had several but i never Knew these basic questions (third ones) and can u explain ZRAM Zipaligned Deodexed! These are real pain in the A$$ and i never asked about them!
THANKS GUYS

1- Custom Rom definitely, im running Liquid Smooth ROM (AOSP)
2- I recommend Trinity Kernel, but search yourself and decide
3- As far as in aware it voids your warranty but it's easy to relock as you said you done it yourself, generally a custom Rom will require you to be rooted, etc

Yes you should unlock your bootloader first which will wipe your data. Then stay on stock for a bit and see how you like it. After that you can root and install custom roms all you want
Oh yeah personally speaking I would avoid 4.2 dreadful update, even Googles small update isn't enough, stay on 4.1.2 for now

The nice thing about the Nexus 7 is that it's a great machine STOCK! I've used Trinity...nothing wrong with it. Since the last update, I've left mine stock. It's fast and reliable.

I'm coming from using a Nexus S for two years where I did a lot of ROM and kernel flashing. So far, the N4 has been solid and I haven't found a reason to root it or flash a new ROM yet. For those who have rooted and flashed a custom rom, what are your thoughts? Any notable improvements over the stock rom/kernel?
I asked this question here as well.
Pro's of rooting; adaway, better toggles, aosp browser. (watch paranoid android for buttonless navigation)
Cons of rooting; less social life due to flashing things constantly.

I have had also used nexus s for 2 yrs,its a small phone compared to this I remember friends telling me nexus s is a big phone. I am also proud owner of nexus 4 for 2 weeks
My nexus 4 is rooted, before arrived I had all setup on my PC all the drivers, adb, clockwork, it was rooted before I opened the box
Its rooted mainly because of ads, i hate ads, and firewall, and titanium backup, few network tools...
I had flux kernel to try changing colors.
I have stock kernel and rom now and planing to flash AOKP JB4.2 v2 when it comes out.
I would root install a kernel of your choice to get better battery life. I'm on PA with Franco r31 and get over 4 hour of screen time. O. Stock , my screen time was under 3 hours

Go for it. If you like stock ROM then just flash kernel since franco and others have patch the wake lock bug that was killing battery life. I wouldn't go for a few custom ROM out there since it is unstable and could be unpleasant to use. Those ROMs are usually the ones with Linaro optimizations. If you want stock experience with customization, then try AOKP. I'm very impressed with AOKP so far.
So I rooted with wugfresh toolkit and then flashed the latest Franco kernel. I now have a tablet that takes 1-2 seconds to wake from sleep...
Any ideas or experience?

I've experienced this myself and read this is common with the latest Franco version r77. You can try a different kernel, or the last version of franco r76. I don't have the issue with m kernel or lean kernel.
Be warned if you flash r76 after r77, my tablet had to optimize apps (which took forever since I had ART enabled) and I also lost root and had to re-lash superSU.
Hello all,
I'm on the forum for a long time, now, in the beginning in the HTC Desire forum, then on the HTC Sensation and now here.
I just bought from a friend an used Nexus 7 3G (Tilapia) tablet, which I really like.
I realized too late that the 3G model has far less developmnent activity with regards the Wifi only model, probably due to its far less distribution.
Now, I rooted my tablet and installed CM11, but I'm not completely satisfied.
What I'd like to have is a Kernel with the possibility to overclock the tablet, but I can't find any for the Tilapia.
Moreover, the available ROMs are not too much, and all based on CM11.
So, my questions:
1. Is there a stable Kernel I can use with CM11 (Kitkat 4.4.2) with which I can overclock the tablet?
2. What would happen if I install a Kernel + ROM designed for the Grouper model on my Tilapia? Would it work (with the exception of 3G, of course)?
In other words, is the hardware the same on Grouper and Tilapia, so I can use the saem ROMs and/or Kernels?
Thank you in advance.
Ciao,
Giovanni

V1.4 is what your looking for. Unsure if it will work on the tilapia though, if you wanna try it make a backup prior. If you bootloop/hang at boot hold vol down and power that will get you back to bootloader where you can access recovery

@croccodillo
How did that work out for you?

Hello,
At the end I installed SlimKAT ROM, which is very slim (pune intended) and fast, together with the Faux Kernel.
I'm running the "Ultimate" version of the Kernel, running the processor to 1.7 Ghz (actually, 1.6Ghz): I cound't be happier!
Ciao,
Giovanni
