Dropped my baby waist high at the end of my workout and bam screen cracked. My first cracked screen!
Anyways, when I first got this phone I thought "Hey it feels pretty fragile, but it probably is sturdier than it feels... nope. It fell on thin carpet floors with my earphone Jack still in place. Funny thing is.... It fell on the earphone jack creating a small focus area of impact which lead to the crack. I believe it hit it hard enough that it bent it from the inside out breaking the digitizer and cracking the screen. Screen isn't bad but touch doesn't work anymore. More details. It has the spigen case on it with the spigen screen protector. .. But even with that case... it was able to land on the area where it is weakest.
Enough of my rant, just be careful of this phone fellas. Shatter proof film, but not crack proof. Going to insurance claim it on Monday.

First of a phone is made for many things but not to be dropped. That's a fact. STOP DROPPING **** ALL THE TIME. Second of in the sony center here in Berlin they dropped that phone on concrete tables and all kinds of stuff and it didn't break. But again. Why can't ppl not hold on to there stuff? You mean something like this?
I've dropped mine from about knee height and mine survived. No case. It slipped out of my pocket when I went to sit down.
I have a technique to hold my phone from the three sides that gravity affects the most for the phone... I noticed everyone holds it from the side but never the bottom, the place most prone that'll make the phone drop out - and down - onto the floor...

For anyone who drops their phone a lot, remember there's a lanyard on the corner. Finger lanyards even exist now days, but I've got mine strapped to my jeans so if it drops it doesn't hit the ground!

Yeah, unfortunate and bad timing. Just finished my workout. About to head to the locker. Whipped my phone out. I think I was swyping... then I put my hand down. Not knowing it caught on to the earphone wires. Bam slung the phone down. Sucks but **** happens.
And yes guys, I know phones aren't suppose to be dropped. Captain obvious. What I mostly find fragile was the digitizer breaking and how the glass was easily pressed upon when touching it. Just a little rant and notice that when the glass breaks... it's really fragile, unlike some of the other phones I messed around with that has cracked screens (besides iPhones) where if it breaks, you can still use the phone without any notice of the glass moving. Oh wells! Waiting on the replacement

Just wanted to say that I've noticed a lot of posts saying how fragile the SGS3 is, now I don't know if I'm lucky or if those who's s3s have broken are just unlucky but I've had an awful lot of accidents with mine the past few weeks, including dropping it on hard concrete from my ear (about 5 foot 9 inches) a few times, dropping it down the stairs, dropping it onto a bedside lamp that I'd places in the floor during a sort out (my S3 actually smashed the lamp stand lol).
The only problem with my S3 is 2 small scratches on the bezel.
So is the S3 so fragile afterall or am I just lucky?

I agree, this thing is hardcore. I went to sit in my friends car, as I was sitting I was closing the door and my phone fell out of my pocket and shut the phone in the door. I was wtf just happened. Then the phone fell to the ground when I opened the door. The stock battery got twisted and battery cover was scratched. I turned it on everything worked, no scratches on the screen. Two hours later my case came in the mail. I ended up buying two qcell batteries from Amazon.com. I was able to straighten the battery out a bit. That thing still works...
I don't think you're lucky, just a really nice device...

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1823328
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1704533
I have never thought a mobile phone may survive from several feet falling, but I would not expect my phone cover material crack after several months usage. I have noticed that these posts have been started a month ago, and not seen so much post complaint the same issue. Just hope it is only some sort of manufacture defect batch, otherwise this is major headache for Samsung according to the production size of Galaxy S3.
Well I am liable for a direct exchange via courier anytime I want as long as I only do it once, so I'm waiting until I find the right case and screen protector for me then I'll do the exchange and have a scratch-free phone.
I also have a few small scratches on the screen that were caused by sand when I was on holiday.

why am I seeing so many cracked screens on ebay and among friends?
I'm just curious, because I am considering getting a GS3 and I have seen firsthand quite a few with cracked up screens, not quite as bad and the iphone folks, but I don't want to get another phone that is going to break on me without even dropping it.
I was walking out to roll up my windows and went to put my phone, without the case on it, in my shirt pocket and I missed the pocket and there it went.. smacked the concrete landing on I believe the top right corner and mostly the back side.. The back battery cover is all scratched up but no big deal.. I immediately put my otterbox commuter case on it like I should have had on anyways.. now believe it or not, I used it the rest of that day and till about 3pm the next day and I was just scrolling down my Facebook news feed when I felt my phone click.. I started looking at it like whaattt? Well, whataya know? My screen I guess finally gave in and a crack formed across the upper right quarter of the screen. From the LED Indicator to the Power Button.. The Digitiser and LED seem ok though. Just seemed odd to crack like that kind of outta nowhere like it did. Maybe my case caused some pressure on my weakened screen after dropping it and the screen just gave up? I've seen things like that happen before but not like this.

I guess you've all been kinda lucky by now...
I've dropped mine 4 times from my pocket onto concrete and can't count the times I've fell asleep and dropped it out my hand and all I've got is a few scratches on the $4 TPU case.
I'm not sure if anyone else does this, but if you're agile enough, try to get your foot under the phone before it hits the ground to cushion the blow... I know I've saved the phone on quite a few occasions by doing this!
I dropped my tabby lightly today (something that Doesn't happen). despite it being in a case, I managed to scratch the corner up pretty nasty and unclip the clips holding the back plate in the corner. Wow.
A few minutes later totally unrelated (I hope), I felt that the center of my screen very warm. I took off the case to check the temperature in the back, behind the case where it cant ventilate and Wow! it's running hot! mostly Under the ffc and close to the left side of the tablet holding it landscape. I wasn't even doing anything heavy.
So yeah. I love this thing but I gotta say. I hate the choice of materials here Samsung, Plastic just isn't right for a 500 $ flagship. I gotta say, I'm pretty amazed with the gps on this thing though. .. I know it wouldn't be possible without the plastic construction. I gotta wonder why the compass is so bad though.
Anyway, thats my rant for the day. enjoy.

If it were a metal back that's tightly bonded to the frame your post would be about how easily the screen cracks. My OG G-Tab 10.1 got run over by an "excuse the cart" after it fell out of my briefcase at DFW airport. It survived unscathed. You spin the wheel and take your chances.

I wouldn't have another metal one. They don't give for the screen and moreover, just check how poor wifi and gps signals are on tablets that are made of all metal... such as the TF201... or even more famous tablets...
Well how about wood? Jk idk.. maybe thicker plastic, or a metal structure/bezel with plastic for the back. The iPad feels pretty solid though so idk if metal is always bad.

Well from what I understand though I am not an expert on this the plastic material is better then metals on Ipad as it can absorb most of the shock bot none the less because of the weight of the tablet you will damage it no matter how lightly it is dropped but that said I have a micromax tablet which has been droped kicked around by my sisters kids to an extent where the casing has cracked but tablet is still running
I sugguest you look at rubber casing because they have the tendency to absorb shock more then anything else only draw back they do not look fancy

once and forever: Samsung devices are cased in polycarbonate and not plastic !!!!!! And this material is used in aircraft and space engineering, it is light and robust and exceeds cheap aluminum in most parameters !!!!!!

I do not know how you define plastic, but that sounds like plastic. It is the other way around. We are flying in plastic planes . And I do not think that planes are built out of the same polycarbonates than this tablet. That is far too simplistic.

For sure the note 10.1 feels like the cheapest device I have ever got , (in materials and build quality) specially the back blue plastic cover, but if it wasn't made like this it would have been allot heavier and very expensive so get a silicon case or something for it, forget about its build quality and enjoy the real power underhood

I really want the double dip but all I've been hearing is stories about the case scratching the phone when you take it on and off....I switch phones almost every day, and I've heard it's a pretty tight fit and you can hear the case "grinding" the phone. Wish they would have put some "velvet" or something on the inside to pad the phone

I can totally believe this. I have had this phone for almost 3 months now and was probably amongst the first 20 people in the world to own it. As I am clumsy, I dropped the phone from my jackets top pocket (so slightly above chest height) straight onto hard wood floor and it made a horrific sound. Had the phone for a few hours and was in shock, picked it up and to my absolute surprise it was perfect, nothing, not even a single scratch or dent.

Thought it'd be wise to put a rubber cover on, if not to protect the camera lens a bit, the next day my boss knocks the phone outa my hand, slamming on the concrete floor.
Just had a little rebound.
No damage .
That was lucky, said I.
Mine fell 1 metre off the kitchen worktop on to a concrete floor face down, remarkably with no damage

I did it, I confess. I've cracked my rear glass panel on my Z.
I was taking a picture out of my bedroom window of the sunset the other night, I have these door style windows that open on hinges sideways, well, it suddenly blew shut and dropped the phone.
It bounced down the sloping bit of roof, hit the patio and bounced around 4ft high before planting itself into the bird feeder at high speed.
All I can say is my heart literally stopped. I expected nothing left of it. BUT the screen isn't even scratched, theres barely a mark on the body and the crack on the back is about 5 or 6mm long running around the corner on the bottom left.
Sony, I love you.
Use a bigger hammer.

There's a person on YouTube who purposely beats the heckers out of phones, and in a joke video he put Kim Jong il in the Xperia Z and smacked it with a toilet brush.
The screen cracked by being hit with the toilet brush.
I guess OP was very lucky.

He would disagree but the amount of times he says 'against the Samsung--' goes to show... Although he has made fun of the Samsung before, at least.
I think he was surprised by the Beer Boot Test, going on to recommend it.
My friend has dropped his a couple of times onto a thin carpet (sitting on tiles) and it hasn't cracked, but he did get a rubberized case for it.
Dropped mine on ceramic tiles, a thin mat on ceramic tiles and onto ceramic tiles bouncing out the door onto concrete steps...No scratches on the glass or the side strips...the housing on the other hand a few chips and scratches at 2 of the corners...nothing to complain about.
Dropped it twice from a pretty high table. No cracks, no scratches nothing. Sony is incredible in manufacturing their devices, but their software is still wacky.

Mine fell on pavement! You know when you're driving and you forgot that your phone is on your lap and then you get out and hear that horrible smack sound! Screen and back are still perfect but the rubbery matte material has a few scratches. No biggie tho

awesome
I was returning from a swim the other day when mine fell out of my swimming trunks onto the rocks, pretty hard fall. No cracks, only a few marks in the anti-shatter film. Seriously hate that film though, am certain the glass could have taken the hit and I wouldn't be sitting here with visible marks in a plastic film. I'm considering removing it but I want that Sony logo .

The loss of the sony logo is OK looks better... I tried SPG glas-t and after i cut myself with it i removed... now i have Screen Knight film. Don't want to make advert but is good, feels a bit rubbery and flexible. It gives a good protection due its flexibility. Top of that is adds a bit of thickness to the back so your phone no longer sits on its edges rather sits on its back. LESS SLIPPY :victory:
PS: when i repaired my losing back panel i already had it on, and i put the sucker cup on the protector, i thought is going to come off anyway.... IT DIDN'T Is not coming off easy for sure...
Mine did nit survive to my frenchie's jaws LOL

Well u hear good and bad stories. I for ones saw with my on eyes that this phone can be dropped from high and hit on tables and stuff like they did directly at the sony center but then also heard reports that the screen broke easy when just touched with a fingernail right by the earpiece. So yeah. I never dropped my phones so I don't know how it performs.

Supposedly this is the toughest top tier phone out there right now.
I want to hear about your stories of actually damaging the phone. Haven't seen many yet, but they have to be out there. Broken screen, broken chassis, any type of permanent damage - except for screen scratches. Rock, concrete, sand - these will scratch any and all screen out there, so no need to share those!
new one comes tomorrow on the bright side
volunteer firefighter here and was about to leave my firehouse after a call when the phone slipped out of my hand and fell hitting bottom first...landed with screen up and I didn't even have to pick it up before I realized she didn't make it. the actual glass didn't break at all but underneath there's a bunch of cracks to the screen and only the top half of the screen works now
My situation doesn't quite qualify, but after just a few days I pulled the phone out of my pocket to realize it had a hairline scratch going across the middle of the screen. I'm sure it was a bit of sand or something (I don't keep anything else in that pocket), but I haven't had a screen scratch on any of the recent generations of gorilla glass so I was surprised to see it.
Just cracked my screen yesterday morning, dropped it on the driveway as I was getting out of my Jeep. Off to Motorola for $200 repair. My recommendation to everyone here: GET THE MOTOROLA INSURANCE. I wish I had known of it earlier. I think it's $89 for two years and a $39 deductible.

I don't think that's available for the Verizon Moto X. You have to do weird stuff with Asurion instead, at which point, I don't believe your replacement can be a custom Motomaker device.
No broken screen but I have dropped it 3 times onto concrete and gravel. The time it fell onto gravel I forgot I had it on my lap and it fell face down while getting out my truck. These drops have resulted in two nicks on the plastic surrounding the screen and a faint mark on the glass. Overall, I'm pretty satisfied with the durability of the X.
I had dropped it three times, all of them front facing the floor. Two on the street and one on a marble floor.
One of them it fell with the corner right onto my toe, and it slided front facing the kitchen floor. I've had a dislocation in that toe. The phone is good though.
I dropped mine from the top of a ten foot ladder bottom of phone hit and glass is cracked but still works overall 8/10 sad for breaking my awesome phone

You all need the otter box defender on your next phone....in the holster.
12 foot drop today onto concrete floor at work from a ladder, phone and holster....and it landed just right that it didn't even come out of the holster. Tiny scratches on holster....nothing else.
Sent from my Moto X cell phone telephone.....
Tripped over the cord to a ceramic heater with phone in hand. Result is a small ding next to the sim card slot. Could have been so much worse

Rather pay my insurance deductible then have a giant otter box on such a beautiful device . this is my first phone I've ever broken so my track record is good
I personally don't understand why people like those otterboxes but I see them everywhere.

Cause some people could care less what the phone looks like.... As long as it's safe. It's not a showpiece.... To me anyway. It's a tool.

Not to argue, to each his own, but why upgrade to new devices then? We should all just be using CAT smart phones lol

I keep my phone in my pocket and cases thicken it too much for my liking--size was one reason I picked the X over the N5. this is the first screen I've broken too. Just bad luck and carelessness this time. I will say that this is heavier than my last phone which means more force upon impact unfortunately.

You are arguing tho... And insulting cause someone disagrees.
I don't need an old phone.... or a pretty phone. I need a good phone. That's got very good protection.
Yes..... That's just me. I dropped it 12 feet onto concrete just yesterday. More than likely if it was in any other case or no case.... I'd be typing this from my s2.

I dropped my phone edge first on ceramic floor from a height of 6 feet, no broken screen no scratches. I'm very impressed with it.

Slightly OT but if you do drop your phone try and catch it with your foot. Your natural instinct is to catch it with your hands but it will drop too quickly. So if you drop it try to catch it with your foot, I've successfully done this a few times, and it greatly reduces the speed and therefore the chances of a bad breakage.
Dropped my DInc at lake Havasu cracked the screen then I got glass splinters when trying to use it haha. 2 days after I tool my screen protector off
