[Q] Nexus 7 2012 root+stock+ota 4.3 == error - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I have a nexus 7 with OTA 4.2.2 that has an unlocked bootloader and is rooted. I got the OTA upgrade for 4.3 (twice) and it starts to reload but ends hung with "Error" on the screen and I have to reboot and it reverts to what I currently have.
So...
Is there an easy fix for this that does not wipe my unit ?
Can someone point me to a good n00b procedure to manually upgrade to 4.3 which retains my data and root privs.
I see lots of info and other people have had this problem but it is not clear to me how to proceed.
thanks !
Harry

to start this should definitely be in the nexus 7 forum
not in the general forums
if you have custom recovery that could definitely be stopping it but I can't say anything for sure
I would suggest this if you do have custom recovery, if not go install one
-backup your current rom
-wipe cache + dalvik cache
-flash the stock 4.3 odexed rom found at this link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2378855
-do another wipe cache + dalvik just to be safe
-and reboot ofcourse
I would recommend starting off a full wipe
and using titanium backup to save the data for the apps you are worried about
be it games or whatever
If you did full wipe and flashed the stock odexed/rooted 4.3 you will definitely not have any problems
the play store will want to push back all your apps as soon as you sign in anyway and it would be quick to just push back your data with titanium backup after the play store does its restore of your apps
---------- Post added at 03:58 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:49 PM ----------
oh and sure enough right in the nexus 7 general section is a post with your exact problem
this guide is very beginner oriented and should be incredibly easy
you just need adb and the stock 4.3 image
you push it through fastboot
and then you can push back your root binaries and super su
so you have stock 4.3, root, all your data, and you don't even need a custom recovery

In TWRP, click Wipe, then Format Data. Be warned, you'll lose everything, including backups.

Does it erase TWRP itself?
Does it erase EFS as well?
I assume after I press this, I will have to push a rom in via Odin for example?

Are you joking mate or just trolling. I hope so otherwise you better buy a iPhone
No not really as I never clicked Format Data before.
I assume it doesn't wipe TWRP itself... but I just want to be sure.
As for EFS I asked because I have a persistent No Service - Selected Network Unavailable showing up since a few days ago. Restore, Full Wipe, Restart, Reconnecting, nothing works. I suspect it might be the EFS partition (TWRP never backed it up as it always fails when it gets to that point, the backup works fine regardless)
So I am down to probably doing a Full Data wipe and install a fresh rom to see if it will fix it.

You don`t have to wipe if you flash a factory image in fastboot. Everything will be erased after the wipe. Look here for how to do it http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2010312.
I'd like an answer to this too.
I want to nuke all data on my N4 (I've saved backups and media on my PC), so that i have a clean phone ready to flash a new ROM (copied across by USB after the wipe) so that any old program folders are gone and I've got a clean slate. But don't want to lose my TWRP recovery/root etc.
I recall that CWM had an option to wipe everything but still had the sense to avoid wiping itself! What's the point of a recovery that nukes itself in the process? That's just retarded - no offence.
Thanks.

So thanks to this forum, I thought I bricked my phone last night (well I kinda did). I used the format option on TWRP and magic happened, I was stuck at the logo. I figured I'd just use Odin to flash my official rom, which worked fine. Now I wanna flash the rom I had before formatting but want all the space back (I dont want all of the bloatware folders and bull**** that result from the official rom, which is why I used format in the first place). My questions is: Can I use format now that I have my official rom running and then push a custom rom through Odin? Will that work or not?

If you use twrp and factory reset it will wipe data not the sd partition if you wipe system it wipes the ROM if you wipe data it will wipe SD partition including your backups. None of those will remove your recovery. Nothing will touch efs partition this is not a Samsung device

You are showing a complete lack of understanding on the subject. I would recommend doing more reading before you mess with your device.
It is impossible to have root when you don't have a rom on your phone. Clearing all data erases root as well. Flashing a rooted rom (nearly all are rooted) establishes root again.
Wiping data in recovery does not wipe the recovery for one extremely simple reason - recovery has its own partition on any device. The only way recovery could ever be wiped is by flashing a recovery.img file by fastboot (such as the Google factory images).

For some reason in my HTC One X wipe sdcard doesn't work with twrp. I've noticed that in the hardest and surprising way once that j was trying to flash a new rom and before flash I hit the wipe sdcard button. It supposed to delete everything but I didn't. Thanks god it didn't wiped my data, but now that I am safe I want to delete all from recovery and it just don't work.

So I can choose wipe data, then copy a new ROM using USB and flash on a clear device?

No. You will not lose your data if you dirty flash the new rom. That means, if you just clear cache andd dalvik cache before flashing the new rom, your data wont be deleted. As you are upgrading from one version of the same rom to another, this will function as well as a clean flash.
A clean flash implies you will have to clear data too in the recovery along with cache and dalvik cache. As I said before, this isnt needed when upgrading from one version of a rom to another of the same. However, if you are shifting from one rom to a different one, clean flash is recommended.
So in conclusion, these are the steps you will have to follow to upgrade to the new rom -
1. Download the new upgraded version of the rom and gapps(if not included in the rom). Also take backups (titanium or/and nandroid as required)
2. Boot into recovery.
3. Clean cache.
4. Clean dalvik cache.
5. Flash new rom.
6. Flash gapps.(if not included in the rom)
7. Clean cache and dalvik again.
8. Reboot to system.
Thus, no data wipe required. Your data and applications will be safe.

Please do research some on the topic before giving any advice
Most roms do not ask for a clean flash when upgrading the rom, so he won't lose his data. Unless oyherwise recommended by the developer, he doesnt have to clear his data when going from one version of a rom to a new one.

If you're just updating a rom you wont lose any data. All you have to do is flash the new rom on top of the old one and that's it. No need to wipe anything.
If you are upgrading from one version of a rom to a higher version of the same rom, you can usually dirty flash (flash on top without wiping) without losing any data.
Also even if you did "wipe date", it won't touch your /data/media which is basically where your /sdcard stuff lives (it will just wipe your apps, settings, etc data, so a backup via recovery is usually advised anyways).
On a related note: what does it take to wipe all of your data off your phone? Basically, to get the Nexus 4 back to brand-new, out-of-the-box fresh? Is there an easy way to do it or do you have to manually wipe different locations and if the latter, what locations must you wipe?

If you are on a stock rom, a simple "format data" from recovery would do the trick as it would wipe /data and /data/media. As the stock rom on /system never changes unless you rooted and added stuff to it. (fastboot can do this too from the bootloader with fastboot erase userdata).
Alternatively, you can just unpack the factory firmware and flash the *.img to their respective partitions (boot[kernel], system, userdata, etc) from this list https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#occamjdq39 (PS: I wouldn't bother touching the bootloader as most people never changed it other than to maybe unlock it).
Nutshell version: All your user-specific stuff lies under /data (settings, downloaded apps, media, etc)

[Q] installing new slim bean rom on SGH-I337M

I am currently using a another custom rom on S4 SGH-I337M.
I would like to install the Slim Bean 2 stable rom on to it.
I am very new the installing roms etc,. Just rooted and installed CWM on my phone last week.
My question is do I doing the following procedure to install
5.Now, perform data wiping task. To do so, select wipe data/factory reset, then select Yes on next screen to confirm your action. Wait few minutes till the data wipe is complete. Now come back to CWM recovery main menu. Select wipe cache partition and after wiping process done, select Wipe Dalvik Cache under advance option to perform Dalvik cache wiping.
Or follow the guide on Slim Bean sire:-
SlimBean 4.3 installation instructions
After there is a some confusion about how to install 4.3, here is a list of what's absolutely necessary
■full wipe (means: wipe data / factory reset and format /system)
■install Slim 4.3 ROM
■install Slim 4.3 gapps
■Reboot
What is the difference between the two guides.
As I mentione I have been doing quite a bit of reading and I was able to following the instruction when i first rooted to install custom Rom my phone. But is a little confusing with so much out there to read.
Thanks in advance for any help and suggestions.
Okay dude I was a noob too just a few weeks ago and I was staying over the little things too. Basically the only things you need to wipe are cache and dalvik cache and format/data but beware you should always have a backup of your current Rom because wiping data will make your phone unable to boot incase the zip file you downloaded doesn't install. In that case you can simply restore your rom download anther and try again so yeah
Sent from my SGH-I337M using xda app-developers app
There's no real difference between those 2 guides.
Slim ROMs always recommend manually formatting system (as well as wiping cache / dalvik / data) but in theory it shouldn't be necessary. As you flash a ROM if you watch all the text on your screen you'll see that it formats the system itself. When you do a data wipe / factory reset you'll notice that it also wipes the cache at the same time. There's no harm doing it twice and I usually end up doing more than necessary.
As the previous poster said, ALWAYS make a backup before you do anything serious. My backups consist of:
- nandroid backup (with CWM or TWRP)
- back up all user apps and data (never system apps/data) with Titanium Backup Pro (I actually do these 3x/wk on a schedule)
- backup Calls and Messages to xml with TiBu Pro
Whenever I change from one custom ROM to another (say, Cyanogenmod to Slim) or one Android version to another (4.3 to 4.4) I do all of the following...
- wipe data / factory reset
- wipe cache
- wipe dalvik
- mount system
- format system
- flash ROM
- flash GAPPS
- with Kit Kat (Android 4.4) I've also been flashing SuperSU1.69.zip since some of the early Kit Kat ROMs were breaking Superuser.
- reboot
- follow the basic setup procedures to get your main Google account going
- open Play Store and get TiBu and Pro Key again
- open TiBu and do a batch action: "restore missing apps with data", then restore calls and messages from xml
- go into settings and tweak away......
When I update to a new version of my current ROM (like a new nightly or weekly or new stable version) I do the following...
- wipe cache
- wipe dalvik
- flash ROM
- flash GAPPs
- reboot
This is a "dirty flash" and can cause problems so do it at your own risk. Worst case scenario is that you might have to restore your backup or do a proper full wipe and try again...
---------- Post added 12th December 2013 at 12:04 AM ---------- Previous post was 11th December 2013 at 11:56 PM ----------
I should also mention, if you've already taken a stock phone and followed instructions to root and get a ROM going then what you're trying to do now is even easier. As long as you have CWM and make a backup you don't need to worry. Just make sure you always download the correct version of the ROM for your phone as well as the correct GAPPS package for the Android version you're flashing.

[Q] New to android, can someone answer my questions on flashing roms?

I'm going to try to flash CM 11 and have already rooted and set up a TWRP 2.6.3.2 recovery. I have seen that you need the new TWRP update to flash CM11 so I have a few questions:
How do I update to 2.6.3.3 easily?
How can I backup all my apps, contacts, data, etc. so that I don't lose everything after I flash?
Is there anything I should know or do before flashing?
Also, how often do you guys flash new roms, or do you usually just stick with one for a while?
Thanks in advance

Hey you can flash Roms with 2.6.3.2 but I'll post a link for you in a Lil for 2.6.3.3...this one is a zip so just flash and wipe cache and davlik afterward.
Make sure you make a backup by going into recovery and clicking on backup and swipe to start. You should always have a BACKUP before you start flashing. If you flash a ROM make sure you wipe SYSTEM, DATA,CACHE, and DAVLIK under advanced in wipe.... Before you flash a ROM and then wipe cache and davlik again afterward.....hope this helps

Install myphoneexplorer client in phone and in your pc and sync your contacts to it and copy all important stuff to ur pc through it you can use WiFi to connect phone to app in pc if you both are on same network so it gives u flexibility, then install flashify from market and then go to teamw.in/projects and look for twrp and download the one that is for your phone and save it to your phone in sdcard then run flashing and select thy zip u downloaded and flash it and make sure u do cache and dalvik cache wipe after install and then u r done.

[SHV-E370K][GUIDE] Install CyanogenMod 12.0 Nightlies for S4 Mini SHV-E370K

WARNING! Although I find a way to install this on our beloved SHV-E370K, this ROM is official for the GT-I9190 and GT-I9195 variant only, and therefore may not have support from CM team!
Your warranty is now void. I am not responsible for bricked devices, dead SD cards, or lose your data. PLEASE READ THIS THREAD COMPLETELY AND BACKUP YOUR NAND BEFORE DO ANYTHING.
Note 1: If you do not know how to use ODIN, flash a recovery, and/or using CMW recovery, please have a research before trying anything.
Note 2: This method do not require root.
Note 3: ROOT access is implemented in CM12 rom, so do not ask me how to root.
Note 4: 3G working fine. LTE are not tested (although it suppose so). Network operators in my country do not support LTE yet, so I can not guaranty it is work.
Note 5: Tested on CM-12-20150123 and 20150124.
CM-12.0 Android Lollipop 5.0.2 Install Guide.
1. Make sure you have latest ORIGINAL ROM (build E370KKTU2BNK5) installed on your device, or at least the baseband E370KKTU2BNK5. You can check this by go to Settings -> About phone -> Baseband version. This is to ensure all network connections are functional.
2. Download and install CMW recovery (attachment).
3. Download CM-12.0: https://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=serranoltexx. And GAPPS for Android 5.0: http://forum.xda-developers.com/par...apps-official-to-date-pa-google-apps-t2943900. Put those file into your SD card (internal memory also work).
4. BACKUP your DATA (SMS, picture, contact, ...) before taking next step.
5. Reboot into recovery by completely turn off your phone. Press VOL + and HOME and POWER button at a sametime for 2 - 3 seconds.
Backup your phone by go to "Backup and restore -> Backup to SDcard". You will need this backup later if you decide to go back to your previous ROM and data.
Go to "Install from sdcard" and install ROM file first, then GAPPS file.
Wipe Data, Cache and Davik cache.
Reboot your system.
6. Wait till boot complete and enjoy CM12 on your little SHV-E370K. Restore your data if needed.
Warning: Do not restore backup data of system apps!
If you restore a bad backup with cached settings in telephony.db in data/data/com.*.*.telephony it can break MMS.
It seems that restoring backups can also break Calendar sync.
Upgrades
Upgrades from previous versions of CM-12.0 are the same process as install, except you do not need to wipe anything. Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to even wipe cache and dalvik-cache when upgrading between CM-12.0 versions. You only need to wipe if you are doing a major upgrade, switching to a different ROM entirely, or attempting to fix bugs caused by bad backups or corrupt app data.
