I'm rocking the new sexy sony. I was talking about it with my colleagues at college. Almost everyone I've encountered asked me if my phone was a new Windows phone. I will be talking about the look and feel of my opinion. Please don't flame or bash regarding this. It's just my own experience and what I've notice about the Sony.
The square really makes it look like a Windows device. Anyways, I've finally took a shower with the phone and notice that the speaker sounds were really low. Anyways, after it dried up, the phone was working well.
There are few issues with the device. The battery life. It's horrible and mediashare has a horrendous battery leak. I'm gonna see if it gets any better and go from there. Also the back gets way too hot and makes my hand sweaty. It's kinda uncomfortable to hold at times. I'd wish sony would hurry up and release the fix for the t-mobile. Oh and because of t-mobile's exclusivity, our development are very slow and not enough people tinkering with it. I'm spending more time charging than actually using the phone.
I will be returning the phone if this continues. It is completely unacceptable. We should be able to get over 7 hours without having to root the device. Even than, the device's stock android feel shouldn't be laggy or discharge while ac is plugged in. (while charging and video playing)
Also the build quality is on par with HTC One and iPhone 5. Also, waterproof and shatter proof is pretty sick feature. And everyone thinks that it's impossible, because of the glass all around.
I have to admit that holding phone takes time getting use to. At first, I would hold the phone upside down or backwards. Because it little difficult to distinguish at night. Although, the square is very retro and unique to any other phone out right now.
I'd wish our phone is snappy and utilize better butter in android. But sony is new in the game and hope they learn to improve soon.
Anyways, what did your friends or family say about their first impression of the Sony xperia z?
Ps: apparently, our glass proof screen protector doesn't have any oleophobic coating, removing would void warranty, and the Sony logo is embedded with the protector. Not sure if this is all true or not. But really sony? It's all glass, literally all around... But they couldn't include old tech like oleophobic coating!?! This would be my biggest complain about the device. Very very stupid mistake on Sony's part.
T-mobile doesn't include anything but the charger and the usb. No headset, no extra screen protector like the unlocked/international version. Unboxing experience was.... Just opening a box without any 'wow' factor.
I guess I have mixed feeling about the phone. Again, there are few issues they need to solve. But I think I'll be going with other brand.

Can you imagine what their 2nd attempt at a flagship phone will be like? Great battery life, oleophobic coating, even better water resistance, fully waterproof, flapless headphone jack (at least, maybe some other ports too!) that gets less hot (probably most likely to be achieved by using a more power efficient processor that'll come soon - does the S4 Pro have a BIG.little equivalent like Tegra 4s? That should increase battery life too). Maybe a tweak too so that the phone works whichever you hold it, if it's say, upside down. Better speakers and an improved camera too. New screen technology, maybe OLED. But as long as it has expandable storage I'm happy.
I might include that the camera is superb! In my comparison with galaxy s4, note 2, iPhone 5... Maybe s4 has too much digital effects.
Sony has excellent superior auto mode. And it does very well in determining which iso settings, white balance, and macro.
If you're looking for very sleek and unique device that is durable enough to drop, waterproof, and excellent camera/video. This is the one for you.
In the states, t-mobile has exclusivity in this phone. This is good or bad. Like I mentioned before... We are behind on developers.
Good thing is that, most likely, you'll have truly unique and very durable phone.
In my opinion, this phone isn't the one for me... The Sony stuff is in very early stage, and they need to focus more in tightening the software. As of power user, the device is not friendly.

How often do you turn on and use the device?
Also, how long have you had the device for?
I'm just thinking because my device is new and not optimized yet. (had the same issue with my iPhone 5 and went away after a week of usage)
I'm really debating if I should get the htc one. I just can't stand the battery percent dropping every min or so.

A waterproof phone should have wireless charging so you don't have to keep opening the flaps to wear out the waterproofness. That is my only fault of this phone

Xperia Z Ultra. Big battery, fully waterproof (according to Sony), flapless headset jack and it's sporting the fastest CPU available (Snapdragon 800).
Is it a phone (size wise) though? I'm really not sure, but I want one.

Honestly, the glass all around is more for looks... It is pure finger print magnet along with no olephobic. Ahhhh I wanna like this phone so much. But I'll be returning it tomorrow for HTC one.
Personally, i do need better batt life than 7 plus hours. This is with light usage too.
Perhaps my phone is defective. But I don't want to risk it or have the patience to wait for the Sony to patch the tmo xperia.
Sorry fellas, but this isn't the one for me. And I'll be joint the HTC one shortly. Although I'll miss the waterproof. Which is awesome.

I also own the HTC one and I can into way say a bad thing about it, it is a awesome smooth, good looking, feeling beast with decent battery and great development, now my s4 got sold fast (junk) if you get that root is necessary to fix that lag fest known as touch wiz, manage way that phone runs you would never guess it's specks, but again you'll be happy with a one, but I also love my xz it's for now my daily driver

You're gonna be disappointed with the HTC One then. Had that phone and battery life sucked! Was constantly on the charger. Even worse, it takes forever to charge, about 4-5 hours. That was the #1 reason why I sold it. Just got my Xperia tonight, so way too soon to evaluate the battery for me, lol

+1 i sold my htc one to get the xz. battery life is a little better on the one but takes 2 or 3 times longer to charge. only real complaint i have for the xz is the locked bootloader. no android device should be locked down like the tmo variant of the xperia z
I get 3 days battery with about 4 hours on screen time. 7 hours wat... I've seen people get 7 hours onscreen time.
Though, best of luck with your new HTC One, I didn't like it to much, was some weird light leak on the corners too which made the screen hard to see. Battery was better though, better than both S4 &XZ
I also have the tmobile version. My buddy has the htc one and he only had it for a month and his screen got dead pixels, defective or its just waste idk. He loves my xz cuz of the look and camera. Honestly i get over 7hrs of battery and i game, Facebook, streaming all day long, Constantly texting too with loads of xda reading plus wifi always on. I have stamina mode on and i can last more than a day without charging. The heating issue is not too bad either. I updated to 4.2.2 and its better than on 4.1.2
I hope ur phone isn't defective, that would blow.

Anything i should know before i buy this phone?
Like any cons/problems?
How's the battery life?
Depends how picky you are. Some people are finding problem everywhere and returning their phones for the smallest reason.
If you check the forum will will find lots of this.
Battery life ...... I had shockingly bad screen on time on the standard kernel so I flashed franco kernel and it seems a little better.
If i didnt leave 3g turned on and didnt actually do anything on the phone i could get 2 days between charges, but if used 3g the battery would go down 10% in 10 mins. But with a different kernel im getting a lot better screen on time.
As for the software its vanilla android and its virtually perfect for me and the phone is blistering fast it does everything i want very fast, also a lot of people where i live dont know what it is especially people with iphones and they are a litttle jealous when they see how fast it is.
A minus though is the phone can get very hot, I men where i live it gets down to -40 and i can use it as a hand warmer I dont know if this is heat dissipation working correctly or some other problem
Im hoping the battery and heating issues can be solved with an update which im sure they will be.
For me buy it its individual i havent seen one anywhere apart from in my pocket any problems and you can just take it straight back )))
Battery life has been fine for me, even on stock kernel (though I'm running a custom one now). As for cons, some people have problems with the phone being a little more fragile, as both front and back are made of glass. YMMV depending on how careful you are / how willing you are to put a case on it.
As far as the heating issue goes, if you flash a custom kernel and UV a bit you should be fine. Also depends on what you use your phone for. 3D gaming will obviously get you higher temps.
OP - you might get some more informative answers if you mention what phone you're coming from and what you're used to or expecting.
Battery life is about the same as any other phone in this category of the Nexus 4's specs.
The heat it gives off I would consider the same as my Galaxy S3.
Only thing that I would tell you is to have a case for it, it has glass on both sides ..I would recommend the Diztronic TPU case.

im running franco kernel with it underclocked and i still get the heat issue. I dont use it for games i have a n7 for that. only normal phone use and stuff like social networks and looking at the browser when on the bus, or when im using 3g when using for example facebook (which i dont think is too demanding on the cpu) it gets damn HOT at the back like i said even when its -40 well maybe -20 on the bus which tbh is very bad becasue then it will condense inside causing water damage.
Im gonna wait till the next update and see if that cures it if not ill have to speak to google i think when im in the uk next month. Im not the kind of person who RMA`s for small things but my battery really is shockingly bad.
But i do agree that this kind of high level hardware is going to hammer batteries it has 4 x the power of my old xperia arc......

I've had my nexus 4 since dec 13 it's the first batch.. The only problem I've encountered is back where the camera is It's got a little rattling noise .. Other than that I'm quite happy with my purchase:good:
Got my phone on day one. The issue I have had with the phone is it came with these forums. Best phone I have ever owned other then that. Lol
This phone is absolutely brilliant. I would put it at a 9/10, losing 1 point for the camera.
It's cooler than the SGS3 temperature wise, it's well built, it's super fast and has great battery life. Volumes are loud, earpiece speaker is clear and as loud as a jet engine, the screen is absolutely gorgeous.
On AOKP milestone build 1, with franko kernel, I get around 20 hours standby, and 4.5 hours screen on time with moderate use. Thats with some form of data on permanently apart from at night (standby time includes sleep at night lol)
Once google release good camera software, nexus will take over. Camera is a 6/10 for me.

Some people in this thread have been discussing camera issues. There are also a bunch of pictures taken by the N4 there. The gist of it is that low light performance may not be up to everyone's standards, but (again) it depends on how picky you are about these things. If it bothers you, you may be able to work around it by using a third-party camera app - there's some debate about whether the problem is hardware- or software-related.
My personal impression is that the camera is good enough for my uses, but then again I'm not a photography buff, so take that opinion with a grain of salt
I could easily recommend this phone to anyone. The battery is what it is, I get 3-4 hours of screen on time. I do have a charger at work and home and in the car, so it's a non-issue for me. The screen is beautiful. The phone is insanely fast. The heat issues I think are non-issues, the back is glass which is a much better conductor, so all that really means is the glass back heats up to cool off the processor, plastic backed phones don't have a huge thermal plate to dissipate heat. I'd call the phone a 9.5/10 especially if you can get it straight from Google for their price. (good luck)
The biggest issue this phone has is that no one can get their hands on one.

I see. I only ask because you were genuinely excited about the Xperia Z. Shame the battery couldn't live up to your requirements.
The battery issue won't be resolved unless OEMs stop competing for the 'slimmest smartphone' title and start slapping 3000mAh+ batteries on their phones ala Motorola
Samsung and LG do the same but only on their humungous phablets. Can't comment on the S4 but, as much as I dislike Samsung, i doubt they'll ever compromise on battery.

I have a feeling that you'll end up with an S4 at the end with it's 3200mAh or so battery. Although early reports indicate the the HTC One has slightly better battery than the XZ - mainly whilst watching videos ( 8ish hours vs 6ish hours, as per expertreviews).
Good luck!

Battery life on the z could be better but it's comparable to S3 and Nexus 4 so I'm happy. I'm getting a charging dock or two and my car charger is 1a and charges the phone on AC so I'm more than chuffed as all my other phones only charged up to max 650ma on USB charging mode.
As for the one, battery life will be as awful as every other HTC released and the 4mp camera will be useless unless you only upload to instagram or Facebook.
Battery life is comparable to Nexus 4, but not to SIII, that one has much better battery life. Of these three I like XZ the most, but all of them have their pros and cons.

Have owned this handset for over a month. And well I love it more than ever. All to many people are over critical of speakers, the screen viewing angles(you should be locked up for viewing your phone side on by the way).. But anyway Sony have done a brilliant job designing and manufacturing such a beautiful handset that is WATER RESISTANT. Look at the majority of WATER RESISTANT handsets that have came before. They contain more rubber than a condom factory. On the speaker side of things most people want to much. I can hear my phone ring is thats it's primary function. Some speakers are bigger and louder but I'm sure that is down to the WATER RESISTANT ability of the phone. If I want to listen to music then I either use headphones or Jack it into my amp. I may just be easily pleased. But even comparing with my wife's S4 I still prefer this handset. By no means is it perfect. But the imperfections I can live with. The perfect handset has never or will never be created. Everything can be improved.Just my honest opinion.

The gimmick of water proofing can only go so far. If your coming from a premium device such as a Note II then you will be soley dissapointed with the camera lag, ui lag, sony's budget screen tech, annoying FLAPS, non removable anaemic battery etc.
Why does sony insist on giving its flagship phones such piss poor tft panels?

Hardly a gimmick. Considering it was the deciding factor why I got it. I'm mounting bike nut. So I spend a lot of time on hills. So having a phone that works when it's wet is a plus and potentially a life saver. Where exactly is the gimmick in that? The camera lag is sorted by using nova launcher and running the camera as a shortcut in the activities tab. Opens almost instantly. The screen issue are you talking about viewing angles. Again why look at the thing side on. White balance again has a fix. What Sony don't do straight out of the box. The great devs on this great forum always find a way.

A gimmick is useless content that just acts cool. IP57 is a life saver. The s4 has gimmicks like the eyescroll function.
It's cool at first but after a while you'll start thumbscrolling like everyone else.
I've gotta agree though - The Z has it's flaws There's no lag like you say... But a few small glitches and over processing camera (It's still better than the HTC one anyway.)

What ever mate
It has been a pleasure to ditch the SGS3, HTC One X and Nexus 4 to use the Xperia Z. Still have the GS3 and One X sitting in my drawer. Sold the N4 a week after I got it in December for a profit! After reading all the negative reviews, thought I might regret my purchase. Not a chance. SIM hasn't left the Z.
The ONLY time I've needed to remove a battery is ironically on Samsung devices when they freeze up every other day lol.
Not one reboot, freeze or ISSUE with this Sony device.
Next.

Ultimately you can get a case for a phone which will protect it against the elements. If sony wanted to make the feature useful it should have made the phone chargable by using a mat so that the flaps did not have to keep being opened.

A gimmick is useless content that just acts cool. IP57 is a life saver. The s4 has gimmicks like the eyescroll function.
It's cool at first but after a while you'll start thumbscrolling like everyone else.

While I agree that the gs4 has alot of gimmicks samsung should be praised for at least innovating and try new things. Give me an improving eye scroll abillity anyday over ugly plastic flaps.

To be honest, saying that Note II is cool and XZ isn't because of ABC goes to nowhere. You never know the background and intentions of people who bought this phone, so do we really need such threads? I'm leaving this open, but I would really appreciate some solid discussion taking place.

Note 2 ? A Premium device ? Seriously ? With it's burn-in susceptible grainy screen, cheap plastic build that actually bends under your finger and squeeks when you squeeze it ? With defective eMMC chip resulting in few hundreds random brick even here on XDA, sudden death, exynos abuse and abysmal software with no sources, bugs impossible to solve by devs and stock UI that fits a kindergarten toy, but certainly not a high-end smartphone ?
Sorry for this rant, but I've owned Note 1 and 2 and was hugely disappointed to see that Note 1's problems not only didn't get solved, but actually more of them appeared and Samsung did NOTHING to solve them, and that was a real pain for me as Galaxy Note was probably my biggest love in smartphones world since the original iPhone.
Anyway, on the topic, water resistance is not a gimmick. The fact that you don't really need it - doesn't mean it's a gimmick. It's a very useful feature helping to save your phone from death as well as giving you a peace of mind while using your phone in the rain etc. I won't comment the rest, because yes, camera has lag, the ui lags sometimes - but if you're saying that this is a disappointment after Note 2, then there's no point in discussion...
Second part - I've spent a LOT of time in Note 2 forums and the level of dissatisfaction was enormous... especially with sudden death issues, exynos bug, devs moving away from Samsung devices, note 2 never getting stable release of CM ( like Note 1 ), some bugs that will never get fixed etc.
Back to discussion with actual XZ owners - did you have any problems with WiFi performance ? Mine performs terrible but I have an engineer appointment to get a Superpowered Fibre set up - they'll give me a new router and I hope it might solve it as many people said this ( new router ) solved their problems. Any experiences in this area ?
I didn't expect rants.

Hmmm. Better keyboard on the one (love stock htc over swiftkey or samsung stock)
I prefer the screen on the HTC one as it better suits my eyes, especially under sunlight.
Sense 5 seems more refined to me and looks better overall to me. I appreciate the design esthetics over touchwiz.
Boomsound = No comparison.

I was worried it was going to be too big coming from a iPhone 4s. Now my misus iPhone 5 even feels too small and inferior! Apple, I'm never coming back.

Thanks, I am on the fence. Tired of HTC messing with the phone during OTA's for us flashers.
Do want a bigger screen. But, did hear about the bad s4 keyboard. I am not much on Swiftkey either. I have been playing with both at att. Will pay more attn to keyboard. S4 did have great dl speeds in store compared to One right beside it.
Again, appreciate feedback--

Yeah, it started with Note Two and One S. They are making them taller and narrower so they feel better in hand. It doesn't feel like that big a phone when holding it.
I dont think you would be disappointed with either device. But the look and feel of the one, add in boomsound. I'm now running trickdroid Rom with tbaldens HTC logo as menu. Only 2 places I see the s4 being better is the sd slot and removable battery. Slightly larger screen. Htcs screen is big enough for me. 32gb is enough for me as that's all I had on my iPhone. Oh and charging time on this phone sucks really bad. Not sure on the s4
I think charging and batt life is good on the s4. Hopefully an update will cure charging. Yeah, 32gb would work since my One S is 16gb. I get by with it. Would really want 64gb and Black.
My browsing is biggest issue, old eyes. Need to play with One more in that regard--
Yes this phone charges slow. My galaxy S3 was slow as well but not sure it was this slow. I +1 the comment on the slightly narrower screen. I prefer this on the one vs S4. Easier for me to type on, and again this keyboard is probably the best I have ever used on any android device.

I don't use the stock charger anymore, it was taking forever...using my andru and it charges from 20% to 100% in 2 1/2 -3 hours. If y'all have another charger try it out, I seriously think something is up with the stock one.

I'm gonna try and destroy my battery today and test. It's at 73% now and estimated charge time in gsam is 1 and a half hours
Charging is fine batt life is fine it's all on how you set your settings and freeze certain apps ....
I posted an illustration on bloatware and safe apps to freeze over in the general forum of T-Mobile HTC one
I can charge From 4%to 40 in 45 min
Not sure it may vary from device to device

Really can not wait for mine to arrive. Up to a two week wait on EE!
But reading all this threads is just making me excited! Think I made a good choice in picking the HTC One to be honest!
Im coming off of contract soon, and thinking about getting the LG G2. I was wondering how you guys feel about it after owing it for sometime? Im coming from a Verizon Moto X dev. Edition, how much of a shock ( if any ) will I be in with the LG G2?
Thanks.
Much better hardware though with different features than the Moto X.

Why no interest in the new flagships?

Samsung GS5 has an almost identical processor that's clocked a mere 10% faster. It's better, but not worth spending a lot more. Unless you need a baby monitor for your Samsung smartwatch.

Loving the phone, hating the buttons on the back.
For me, it is the best. Fast and good camera, fast hardware and the rear keys are not so bad. I love the double tab to wake up the phone. And.. i came from samsung, i love the feature to switch the buttons (back, menu and home). The Quick Memo function is also very cool (for screenshots).
It took a little bit to get used to the back buttons but now I'm very used to them there and I love how thin the bezels are because of this.
G2 is an awesome phone. Could've been a greatest one if it has easier flashing methods (for custom recover, roms etc). Samsung phones are definitely the easiest to flash.

great phone
The phone is the best phone i have ever had,i came from the galaxy note2,which was great phone and never regretted my decition,it has amazing display almost no bizzels very capable camera for outdoor shots, acceptable for indoor shots, great battery life, and personally i liked the back rear mounted buttons and i never felt that i need to root it at all.
Go for it it won't disappoint you expect for the build quality which is usual for plastic phones.
Coming from Nexus 4, this phone is definitely worth every penny. It has excellent battery life, camera, screen, processor and a slim design. What else could you ask for? That said, I'd recommend you to wait for One Plus One phone. That thing shape to be a beast although you need to check its compatibility with Verizon network
At this point I would also consider Sonys phones. This phone is fast and smooth but I am not impressed by the camera. I also have signal issues.
I have had it since October and dropped it a few times. It gets small dents along the plastic surrounding the screen but that's all apart from some tiny scratches on the screen. I think it is pretty durable although not completely Nokia grade. Bottom line is in still looks great.

Btw. The camera is not bad but it is just not on par with the competition. But you can do a lot to improve it with tweaked apps. Mine currently does 4K and slow motion. So the default cam app issues has caused the community to make improvements and add some pretty cool stuff.
Bump one last time. Im going to Verizon to swap out here soon within the next week. Thanks guys!!
Mine here work great, the screen amazing. The back button is pretty great(useful) for me, easy to take photo and control volume. Everything great here, no problem at all. For camera is acceptable also the mod from xdabbeb make g2 able to shoot 4k and slow mo and quality is beter.

Great phone. Only regret is build quality and cheap noisy plastics (especially the back).
In addition I must say that nexus5 touchscreen is a bit more responsive.

Just had this phone for 2 weeks. My HTC M7 was getting beat up. Bottom speaker died, Purple tint on camera etc. So i decided to try the G2.
I love the buttons on the back. Took me like 10 seconds to get used to them.
Also as mentioned, LG knows that thick bezels are waste of space. Suck it HTC M8.
Fast and better battery life than M7.
Only thing i miss is the community support that the M7 had tons of. And it was impossible to brick.
Can´t wait for G3.
The phone is amazing. Very fast, I never had any hickups. The only problem I see is the durability. Mine fell from my bed onto a coffee cup. From, like, 40 cm. The fall made a 5mm long, 0,5 mm deep dent on the side both in the plastic and the aluminium layer. I immediately bought the spigen armor case and I strongly advise you to get a case as well. Other than that perfect.
I can say this has been one of the only smartphones thats kept me content without wanting to try a newer device. I dont like samsung and htc's designs inside and out.
I'm patiently waiting for the LG G3
