[Q] Sound Issue - Volume - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Hey XDA Forums,
I have a Galaxy S4 (from Sprint), and I was wondering about some sound issues. Whenever I play videos at night, I always have to keep changing the volume from low to high and high to low. Sometimes, (when playing a video), the soft sounds are hard to hear, but then when a loud sound comes in, it seems like the speakers blast them. Recently, I have been using headphones to avoid the issue, but I wanted to know if there was some sort of sound mod out there or anything similar to that. I've looked at viper4android: Viper4Android, but I wanted to know if there's any native fix to it.
Could it just be the location of the speakers on the phone? My sister has an iPhone 5, and she never has this issue.
Thanks,
Salil999

Is it the same on a bunch of different videos? Could it just be because of the way the audio was recorded encoded?

No, it's on all audio, music and video.

Audio capture in loud environment, Horrible!

The SIII for U.S variants has the S4 DAC. I recorded a video in an indoor concert/club recently and the audio quality sucks! There is too much bass in the audio making it crack/distort beyond! Is there any type of way to reduce mic gain? Has anyone tried recording with the headset plugged in? I heard that reduces the bass level a bit...
Voodoo will come to the SIII, but I hope it will come to the U.S models since it doesn't have Wolfson.
Try the LGcamera app, it's got a video recording feature that allows you to decide which microphone(s) and bit rates you want to use. Experiment with it

Do I set the mic to microphone, default or camcorder? They all sound the same. Haven't tested in loud environment though...

Have you ever recorded audio in a loud club/concert which did NOT have clipping and distortion? If so, I'd love to know what device it was.
A bit off topic of your use case, but I've always been of the opinion that shows are loud to prevent piracy of the show, because being up front it's more than loud enough to damage your hearing.

I'm not too sure, try it in the different configs and see which sounds the best for you. I haven't tried it myself but heard it helps with the issue you brought up.

iPhone can handle loud environments without issue.
The Galaxy SII also had this same problem, there was either none, or very bad automatic gain control. All loud audio was recorded very distorted. I'd love to find a fix for this!

This is an Android problem, not a Samsung one. Basically the hardware drivers are extremely primitive. I am a musician and therefore look for audio apps all the time, and there just aren't any because Android's audio is just too primitive. There is NO way to adjust the gain down, only up. If you don't believe me, Google audio gain and Android and you'll find a lot of stuff. Latency is a also huge issue, and that's why apps like Songify don't exist.
I wanted to record my band practices with my phone too. It's impossible. I use an iPod touch with an I rig mike instead.
It's really a shame Google just doesn't care about audio, ICS fixed nothing.

How Loud is the Speaker?

Hi. I haven't received my nexus yet, so I'm wondering how loud the speaker on the back of the phone is in comparison to phones such as the sgs3. I got an Inc s atm, so I'm sure the LG couldn't be any worse HTC have the worst speakers...
Cant' comment on it compared to SGS3 but compare to my galaxy nexus it is a big improvement in sound level and bass
I can't compare to the SGS3, but compared to my HTC vivid, the speaker on this is LOUD! So much so, on the vivid, my settings for volume were maxed and with the N4, they're a little over half way up.

before this phone, i had a EVO3D and this thing BLOWS IT OUT OF THE WATER!
its pretty darn loud in my opinion...
pretty loud. don't need any volume hacks like the galaxy nexus.
Thanks for those replies guys. Let's face it, though. HTC phones, and the gnex had a bad speaker. I want to know how this phone's speaker compares to a decent phone's.

well GN speaker was fine, just needed to be tuned up. it was fixed eventually in a OTA. software bug, wasn't hardware related.
speaker won't be any problems on the N4.
I just did a side by side comparison, the s3 speaker is slightly louder but a lot more clear sounding than the nexus 4.

I am hoping that the nexus 4 is comparable to the s3 in loudness, love being able to listen to podcasts while taking a shower without resorting to using an external speaker.Putting the phone in a box works wonders wonders too when wanting to do this.why people listen to music with thier phones speaker is just madness to me.After a few minutes of a song i really miss the low end and go back to podcasts or just turn it off. I must say that the S3 speaker is quite good even for music and most of the spectrum of the music is audible. It is such a step up in loudness from the S2.
Alternatively you can try Volume+ which is a app that worked for me on the Galaxy Nexus. It should work on 4.2 as it did on my GN.
Give it a try and see whether or not it actually boosts your music (play it in background and boost it, see if volume goes up).

Thanks for that. As long as it's not too bad, I don't mind. The s3 has quite a good speaker for a smartphone, I think. For some reason phone manufacturers have forgotten that the speaker is a very important part to the phone, and have started putting the worst speakers on phones.

It's not for music, I like a loud speaker so I can actually hear my phone ringing, and so I can hear things such as videos clearly. Of course, sometimes for music playback if I want to hear a new song or show someone a song.
Compared to the SG3 I think you get better quality sound on the SG3. The nexus 4 is loud but it depends on the quality of the sound file, the only thing I'm finding really annoying about the nexus 4 is how weak the vibrate motor is.. I have missed a lot of notifications because of this, I'm using franco kernel and you can increase the vibrate setting but I still find it lacking at least for me.
Quite loud, as long as it's not resting on a flat surface
Its loud enough to hear that young jeezy clearly lol...but great volume on the N4 my man...

with poweramp?
have you set equ properlY?
I have been trying out different songs on the S4 I9505X on both bass boost and custom mode and normal mode with different songs vs my HTC one with beats on/off using ur beats earphones.
I tell you what the HTC is louder with beats on/off vs the S4 in bass boost/custom but the S4 has way more bass and is better to listen to imo.
With the S4 is normal mode the s4 is about three notches off being as loud as the htc one, so I dont know where on earth GSM arena get average volume levels from as the S4 is a beast for music I was so shocked at not only the loudness but the clarity as I have to listen to my htc one now with power amp to get proper bass but on the s4 i dont. It is far better than the S3/Note 2 aswell the note 2/s3 with power amp sucks imo its too distorted.
*The things I prefer on my htc one are
the screen but the difference isnt like it was with the one x vs the s3, as the screen on the s4 is nice.
*I prefer the fact i can send ten page messages where as on the s4 its only three page messages, also I prefer HTCs keyboard and spelling.saving words better
*I think video and defo video audio is better on the One
*Speakers on the one are better
*weather widget/clock
*the one is generally quicker as well
But there is alot of great things about the S4 and I cant wait to get one.

I have tried 6 different I9505Xs in the last 3 days in different shops the audio is the same, clear, loud and great bass. great phone the only things I would change is the keyboard, the text message limit of 3 pages, camera/video FOV and the audio mics and most importantly price lol.
Is there any background static at all? I will be connecting this to my car though and AUX jack and if there is any background noise it is amplified and thus very noticeable when no songs are playing.

Does it sound electrical? Like if the you do something on the phone (scroll a page, load something, etc.) does the sound change? If yes, then its the phones fault and it will be much more noticeable.
Here is an example where someone else had a problem with a computer: http://www.sevenforums.com/sound-au...und-noises-my-headset-plugged-sound-card.html

I will do a test today, as i normally listen to music via power amp. I know i get distortion in some songs on power amp with beats on havent tried it with beats off. Tbh I do miss having a standard music player with customizations like on the S4.
I am very impressed with the S4s overall audio its better than the HTC for clarity, bass and its not far off the loudness either, for me to get the same sort of bass the s4 has I have to use power amp, I can only imagine how power amp sounds on the s4.
I mean I was so tempted to swap my HTC One for a S4 but there is still things i prefer on the htc, like messaging (especially as I often send very long messages (s4 limits you to 3 pages) and send messages to mutliple contacts (s4 limits you to 10 contacts), video/video audio, speakers, can watch videos when in a phone call using stock video player but the S4 does have a hell of a lot of easier to use features, like notification toggles and the gesture stuff and the fact u can use any gloves on the screen.
Audio quality is pretty okay, but take note of this if you use low impedance earphones:

Having been listening to loads of songs on my One, I have tried the phone with stock music player with beats on/off the sound is defo clearer with beats off on most songs other songs its about the same and then others beats audio on is better.
On power amp songs are defo clearer with beats audio off.
I also tried a few of the same songs on the S4 and didnt have the same problems in normal mode of bass boost or custom.
Btw I have found something interesting about the I9505X , the white models (and I have tried about 5 now in loads of different shops) have lower volume than the black version and I have done black/white side by side comparisons and the white version definately has lower volume wtf is up with that. Not that is concerns me as I am going for the black anyway but I find that strange.

Defo prefer the S4,
The sound quality on the s4 is far better than that on the s3. Music is the third most used thing on a phone for me after calls and texts, then its watching videos, then taking pics and videos.
out of those things the S4 wins on calls, music, watching videos, taking pics (in most situations) aldo video quality imo is as good as the HTC but HTC has better sound and I could really do with the longer battery life and memory card slot now seeing as I am rapidly eating into the 25gb that came with the phone

Sound problem on video recording ?

Hi friends. I noticed something today. I record a video in a silent room, just me and my wife. After recording I started to watch and noticed that there is no sound until one of us speaks. There is a sound cut in the video. No background sounds until someone speaks and when someone speaks I can hear all the voices. What can cause this problem? I tried it with lenovo super camera app, stock camera app and moded camera app and all of them has the problem. I tried it with my friends G2 and the result is same. No sound until someone speaks. BUt it is normal when the tv was open or there are much peaople talking in the place. Anyone noticed something like that?
It sounds like noise suppression is working to me.. compared to my One, I think it's great. I have 2 toddlers and this phone does a great job at blocking background noise during conversation.

same problem here with the sound on video recorded.Mybe someone will find a solution for this issue.
yes I too have same problem. The sound keeps cutting in and out whenever there is no talking or loud noises going on. The mic picks up sounds great, especially voices. But ambient sounds are very hard to hear with all the sound cut outs and background noises. Maybe just some faulty units, or something that needs to be addressed in a future update just like on the Moto x.
Nexus 5 has same issues, read a long thread about it this morning. I have the same problem when recording audio, almost like an underwater sounding effect. I think it has to do with the LG noise cancellation algorithm. Not sure of a fix, only thing I don't like about the G2 so far. On the Nexus 5 some folks adjusted the build.prop to turn off noise cancellation if they were rooted and it seemed to work. Not sure how to do that though.

Is the audio when recording and shooting video fixed?

The S4 and Note 3 have this issue, random and quite annoying popping when recording audio. I was really disappointed when I heard it on the Note 3! Hopefully it has been fixed on the S5!
Can anyone confirm whether or not it's there?

We'll see when I get mine. I'll let you know. But I think, it'll not be there for some S4 and Note 3, there's no popping when they record.
I've had numerous S4 and Note III samples through my hands and they have this issue. It's not an isolated issue. My Note II, HTC One, G2, iPhone 3/4/5s etc. have no such issues whatsoever. Normally I record video and audio separately but the argument (the best camera is the one you have with you) applies to a cell phone to capture things as they happen, unplanned. It's annoying to have these sounds in the audio.

weird i never experienced such thing on s3, n2, s4..
like I said, I've recorded plenty of guitar videos with my s4, through a Marshall dsl100 stack, which is loud and bassy, and it never ever ever had a problem with audio. it was always so clear and detailed, albeit only 128kbps. my g2 has that horrible underwater wishy-washy sound that makes the video camera unusable. I've never once seen audio artifacting on the s4. I had the snapdragon version, maybe you had the exynos?

Yes the problem is not with loud music like other devices which hard clip especially on kick drum hits...
This popping noise is most common when it's very quiet like recording at night with just the crickets outside...
And yes the audio was completely unusable on the G2 for me as well, if you recorded video in a loud cafe, no problem. But as soon as you went into a quiet area the gain levelers started getting really confused and there was all kinds of problems with sound. Ashame too since its camera (G2) was so nice...
Back to the S5, I have one in hand and while I have not put it through the gears my preliminary findings reveal a completely changed recording from the S4/Note3 hardware. The AGC does tend to bring up the levels higher when ambient sound changes but at least there's no nasty pops. The pops on the S4/Note3 can be removed with a click/decrackle plugin on most DAW software but they shouldn't be in there in the first place. This looks promising.
The video low light performance looks very good, I was shining a focused down aspheric torch (flashlight) around the pasture at long range and the screen was 100% black except where the beam was hitting objects at hundreds of yards away (barn, trees, etc.) and the detail looked shockingly good! I viewed the video on my Macbook Pro w/ retina display so it's a valid test.
Have not tried to see if it's IR filtered. Tonight we'll have the burn barrels going, that's the best IR test I know of without taking it to the lab.
These processors are so powerful it would be nice if they gave us the option of lossless audio recording and even a RAW photo option, although these tiny sensors would need a LOT of post processing to make the images useable. Still, however I always find that RAW+ Photoshop CS6 post processing looks better than the camera's aggressive post processing tuned for speed and convenience. With a 128GB microSD card, RAW+JPG would be fine.

This is not me/my video, but this is exactly how it sounds. Both the S4 and Note3 do the same exact thing!

Yep, I have several concerts recorded in 2012 and the audio clips worse than these kids with their pyramid amp powered systems playing hip hop with the bass turned to 11!
That's why I always record audio and video on separate devices. They won't allow a real camera (no cams with removable lenses that is!) in most venues...
I was at a gig on Friday night and sadly all my videos have distorted sound quality. Issue stll exists..

I can confirm the popping is present in my unit too. Had it on S4 as well. It tends to occur less when the sound is turned to minimum while recording.
