I have the Google Edition. What ROMS can I use? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok so I purchased the Google Play Edition of the Galaxy S4 which came with stock Android. I am honestly a little bit disappointed with it because although it is stock Android I often get force closes on apps and bugs. I used to have the Nexus 4 which ran much better. I guess maybe the software just isn't optimized for the GS4.
The Google Play Edition is the i9505 as far as I know so I think I am in the right section.
My question is how do I know what ROMS will work? Will they all work since the hardware is the same? Are there any good stable ASOP ROMs out there I can use with my GS4? I would like a ROM that adds a few extra features like a flashlight toggle, T9 Dailer, and any tweaks that boost performance. Above all I want stability.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

[Q] Stock 4.3 vs Google Edition 4.3

Hi,
I currently use a ROM based on Google Edition 4.3 and it is fast and stable. I hear that the new stock 4.3 is also much faster.
My question, has anyone used both? How do the speeds match up? I would expect GE 4.3 to be faster due to its smaller foot print, is this correct?
Your advice and comments are appreciated.
For me I m very impressed with 4.3 GE I m using it in 9505. I also used galaxy nexus with stock 4.3 for few days. I must say my 9505 giving same feeling with GE 4.3

Google Edition will always be faster because, compared to touchwiz it is much lighter. Although I have stuck to Stock because I love some of Samsungs software such as MultiWindows, Air Gesture (show notifications by waving at the phone) , AirView.
These are all the reasons I bought an S4. I can't justify installing another ROM so I install a custom launcher and keyboard

I prefer touchwiz..amazing custom kernels available..lots of mod to give it complete makeover..i debloated my rom using rom cleaner leaving only s-stuffs..and, i find battery life better on tw
Tried GE..it sucked for me..missed tw featues and camera...i actually use some of those "gimmicky" features...only advantage i see in GE/AOSP timely updates..
Great feed back guys, thank you.

Best rom? Coming from iPhone

Okay, I've been running Goldeneye rom since I bought my S4.
I came from an iPhone 5.
I really like andriod but I just don't like the lag that it always has...
I don't know how to exactly explain it but here is a good example:
Opening the camera app on an iPhone there was little to no lag it would open up quick to where i can see what im taking a picture of and when i clicked the capture button it would take the pic no hesitant.
S4 is different... idk if its TW or the rom I am using but when I open the camera it takes at least 1-2 secs of delay. Then when taking the picture it has a slight delay again and usually never gets the best shot.
Also opening the Messaging app...
For example: when opening a text and going to click on reply to it the keyboard doesn't come up as fast as it does on the iphone. Im so use to opening and start typing and when I do that i usually miss the whole first word I was going to type.
I don't know if anyone understands what i'm talking about but yeah lol if anyone does understand what have you done to fix this?
TW based ROMs are going to be a bit more system heavy, and you may experience slower response times. If you're looking for speed and customization than I suggest you go with a AOSP/AOKP based ROM, or even a Google edition. I personally use task650 AOKP.
A quick tip for TW, go into your developer options. Phone - About phone - click build 7 times to activate it. Than set all your animation scales to 0 in your developer options. You'll notice 2x more speed on TW.
As for the best ROM.. There isn't. Its all user preference. There's a ton of great ones out.

How is the battery life on that?
Goldeneye gets me about a full day of usage.
Also, does it have apps2sd and pictures to sd?
It does. Tasks is a 4.3.1 ROM with apps2sd incorporated. Battery life on an aosp based ROM will generally be better than a TW at stock levels due to it being way less extensive. Though battery really depends on how you use your device.

If you want to use APT-X Bluetooth codec for hi-def bluetooth, then stay away from AOSP ROM's because they don't have it. Otherwise, my favorite AOSP ROM was Slim Bean.
For an experience that is "stock" framework but looks AOSP and doesn't have a TouchWiz UI, then I'd install KangaBean (Google Edition 4.3) and use xPosed mods to tweak the heck out of it. You can even use the xPosed mod to run CyanogenMOD themes. This is what I'm on now and I'm loving it.
As far as camera goes, I think they all have a small lag when opening camera. Which is annoying to me.
I've started to try and use AOKP by task650 but i cant get LTE on it...
It's a pretty good rom and what i was looking for but no connection = me sad

Personally I would take a look at the Flight5 ROM. I came from an iPhone 4s, and I can honestly say this is the best from I've tried so far.
It is the default ROM, but with nearly all the bloat removed, very fast, great battery life (I average 13 hours on, with 4+ hours screen time, but that does depend on usage), and hardly any lag, if any, when opening the camera.
I've only tested one ASOP GPE ROM, but I found Flight5 to run just as fast and smooth.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2418522
Another thing that has not been mentioned yet, is there is a general consensus that the camera on TW based ROMs is better than those on ASOP based ROMs. I agree with that, from my testing. It's not a huge difference, but it is there.
After installing any ROM, I would recommend taking a look at Xposed modules, particularly WanamXposed. This will allow you to make customizations normally associated with custom ROMs, without having to flash them permanently.

#1. There are so many roms here and it is worth trying many of them: AOKP can be a bit "bleeding edge" at times, so if you're not getting the results from task's rom for LTE, save time and effort and try another rom!
- Personally I have very good LTE and a very stable, no-lag experience on Shostock rom. It may not appear as flashy as some other roms, (but the bootup animation is ) However, the Shostock threads have been very helpful and there are many responsive/friendly posters (in general)-- it's a bit more relaxed there. Also, several of the add-on packages that iB4STiD provided for GoldenEye are actually built in to shoman94 's roms. So that saves steps.
--Sho has two i377 "Shostock" roms: one is based on the ATT stock rom and is now at android 4.2.2 (VERY stable & battery life nice: a perfect daily driver) here is the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2305752 .
-- Shoman's other i377 rom is based on the international version of the S4, (I9505). It runs perfectly on the i377 and is currently at android 4.3. [Android 4.3 is newer, with a couple of changes from 4.2, but I personally am less crazy about it than 4.2 -just my opinion] Anyway, here is the link to Shostock international rom for the i377 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2468860
#2. Also, Br4nd3n's suggestion on turning off animation in developer settings is very good for any rom here. (In the TW rom menus there are three animation options.
=So go to: Settings/ More/ Developer options, and then look for the setting for "Windows animation", "Transition animation" and "Animator during scaling."Set ALL of these to OFF and the lag is generally gone.
I have had some apps that caused lag, so check that too!
#3. Also, FrozenDragoon's comment on the results for TW camera app being better is what I have seen as well. AOSP/KP and Google Edition roms are great in many ways, but their Camera app is not as good as the original Samsung one that TW roms have on them. If camera shots are important, then that's a consideration. If the camera is not as important as flexibility/customization, then GE or AO?P roms are the choice.
#4. CZ Eddie mentioned Xposed framework with (iB4StiD's other great rom) a Google Edition rom for the S4 called Kangabean http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2349077 . This GE rom is fast and simple, but open to customization with Xposed framework and (I think) Gravity-Box.
- Using those two programs you can tweak the rom in limitless ways. (But it is not a TouchWiz rom, and won't have the Samsung special features). So, if you want customization that's a good direction (albeit with quite a few steps to get there
Good Luck

You know, the OP never mentioned what Baseband he's on. That will affect suggestions for ROMs.
Are you on MDL, or MF3 with SafeStrap?

Wow! That's right. If he has MF3 with Safestrap, he can't use any Android 4.3 rom (yet), he will have to use Android 4.2 roms.
Of course the new GoldenEye is 4.3, but the old one was 4.2. . so it still is not clear
There are NO roms better than the other...period. all this does is start a war....
Check the roms out yourself....thay ARE ALL GOOD in their own way.
here you go, 80+ roms to check and make the decision yourself.

[Q] Trying to find the perfect ROM for me

I recently got an S5, and I'm a big fan of vanilla-ish Android (I've been using Cyanogenmod for a long time). However, the stock Samsung camera is extremely nice. There's other things I like about it, but it's mainly that (and maybe the wifi calling).
I'm looking for a ROM that retains the stock Samsung camera, but is as close to AOSP as possible. I was looking at XtreStoLite. Are there any other ROMS you guys can suggest? Possibly something that retains the AOSP look and feel, but still has some of the better Samsung improvements (specifically that camera!).
Thank you!

Cyanogenmod Camera ????

it's just simple question and i hope get a simple answer ...
why cyanogenmod rom camera quality so so so bad compared to the stock touchwiz version why ???????
Ask the CyanogenMod team that question.
In all seriousness, CyanogenMod Camera is one of the options in the GPE ROM in development. I have it installed and haven't seen the drop in quality you have. Perhaps you have a setting improperly set?
That's the only thing that stops me having CM as my main every day rom. It's a Samsung phone with Samsung camera. Only Samsung have the correct drivers to make the camera work properly. Open source doesn't work well on closed source hardware
Danvdh's Google Play Edition ROM is exactly what it says on the tin. It uses the official Samsung sources for the I9505G, especially libraries, which likely explains why the camera works well on my device while you have to deal with sub-par performance. According to the development team there are a few bits of CyanogenMod in there, but they seem limited to a few apps (AudioFX, cLock, Camera, Music, and Trebuchet) that can be selected as options, e.g. choosing between Google Camera, Motorola Camera, or CyanogenMod Camera in Aroma.
I've played around with Cyanogenmod 12 on another device, and it's an option for most devices, but for devices that had a GPE version (i.e. S4, HTC One M8) I believe it to not be worth wasting the time on. Install the GPE ROM, and I think you'll be far happier.

So is the GPE rom.
But I can't really compare them because I haven't used cyanogenmod on my s4, yet. Wen't directly for the GPE rom because it seemed more stable than CM12.

ROM suggestion for a S5 User

Hi,
My father is using my old S5 (KLTE) for about 2 years now. He's recently complaining about the performance (response and battery) of the phone. So I was in search for a price/performance phone to replace his S5.
But then I decided that in the old days, I was able to have better performance from my old Android phones by just changing the rom. (to a lite and recent version) together with a factory reset, I believe he will have better performance for at least a few more months while I find a better phone for him
So, I'd like to get your suggestions on a performance rom.
Preferably, I'd go with a touchwiz based rom because I don't want to change his familiarity of the interface. But I know that it (touchwiz) would mean loss of performance.
he's used to use video talk over the GSM so I believe this is only available in touchwiz , right ?
On the other hand, a lite rom with possibly Nougat (7.1.x) would be a good upgrade.
I can't select at the moment which path to go.
Can you recommend me best roms for each path ? (Touchwiz and Non-Touchwiz)
Thanks.
Currently I'm with the stock Marshmallow ROM from Samsung and it's pretty fast. You can check my signature for all the info about it. But I'll soon change to MagMa ROM VX3 (when it gets released) which is a port from the S8/Note 8. While still on Android 6.0.1 it has all the features and is lighter I think. Try out a few ROMs and see which one's the best. It all depends on apps installed, kernel used, disabled stuff, etc. In my opinion better to stay on TouchWiz since he's familiar with it. Plus non-touchwiz ROMs tend to have bugs.
I would like to know also if there is any custom rom than has better performance than the last stock one and has no bugs. I'm afraid that custom roms could have neither and add some extra features that won't compensate.
About the battery you can simply buy another one. That was the last Galaxy S to have a removable one and that is the main reason why I have not upgraded it. But I have the feeling the phone has become slower, even I have reset it.
Try these ROM. It is a TouchWiz Rom so I think your dad would like it. It is fast in terms of performance and battery life is okay. Works best with boeffla. Heres the link:

But in what way is this better that the last stock one? And it has any disadvantage? (battery life, bugs etc that are usual in custom roms)
For me the bigger problem of the phone are not the features, that come mostly from the apps and they are the same. It is the performance as it always have a delay before starting any app that is not present in newer devices.
Even cheap devices as the Moto 5 has better performance, but the camera and the display is worse as the Galaxy S5 was a high end device making the upgrade a mix bag. Unless I go to more expensive devices. But the ideal would be a rom that optimize more the speed.

So far so good. No problems or bugs at all. The performance of the Rom is absolutely amazing when it comes to games or whatever you are doing. I even got a 64000 score in Antutu Benchmark without overclocking. I think it is the most stablest Rom that I had to my galaxy s5.
My recomendation if you want fast its the Ressurection Remix 5.8.5...
Its the fastest rom I've tried no doubt

But is buggy in any way? And what is the link for the rom? I have done a search and appears lots of different versions.
My s5 has the tendency to stall at the start of google maps and is rather slow with google assistant. Eventually I will buy one new but I would prefer a s9 (that is quite near) or s10
