Received my Nexus 4 today...beautiful phone. A couple questions - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Made the jump from the Nexus S to Nexus 4 - great upgrade for me. The phone is beautiful, from its screen to design, and to performance. Got 4.3 on it right away and factory reset the phone.
So, I had a couple of questions..
1. In the recent apps drawer, shouldn't there be a 'clear all' button or icon? I have to manually swipe each one out.
2. Is there a way to change the toggle settings in the notification drawer? Also what about the lock screen shortcuts? (on stock)
3. Is daydreaming bad for the screen (if it stays on for 8 hours a night)?
4. Very very minor, but I believe I noticed 1 super tiny dead pixel. I'm quite sure it is. But it's not noticeable, but I know it's there. Should I leave it alone or send it back, or whatever?

1. No there is no such button, but you can flash the JSS15J build in android section it has that button.
2.no way to change the toggle settings, for that you can use power toggles it has everything.
3.yes it for battery life.
4. depends on you. If you are fine with it move on. All the best.

(1 & 2) I think you're too used to aosp and cm builds, stock has minimal customization.

welcome aboard
got same upgrade from NS to N4
but just a question, why purchase a pure google and not root and flash roms?
mine stays official for about 20 mins after first boot, as someone says, too accomplished with coocked one to stay on stock

Haha. Not just yet. I want to experience stock first. It's going smooth and the 4.3 update seems to do quite a bit of what the 'Franco' kernel did. It has good battery life from what I've experienced only so far (got 2.5 hours of screen time from 40% to 1%, so should get 4 hrs - but only wifi).
Perhaps down the road.

Run a dead pixel fox app ?
I did that and it fixed mine!

I don't get it. I downloaded a couple of apps and one flashed the screen to fix it. Did not work. How is it supposed to even fix it?

Apps can't fix dead pixels, they sometimes can fix stuck ones however.

4.1.2 broke swiping?...

Is anyone else having problems with swiping left and right etc since 4.1.2?
My device recognises the swipe but doesn't complete ie when ctolling through home screens the page won't move to the next page it will stay where it is and you just see the page move a little bit and then go back.
Hope that makes sense.
Please reply if you're having this problem or not
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
I've noticed this as well since 4.1.2 but it only happens for the first few seconds after switching the screen on. I've had to apply a bit more force in swiping to bring down the Notifications or to go from screen to screen on Home and the app drawer. Gently flicking the screen doesn't work and stuff like Notifications just flips back up, but after 20-30? seconds it works fine again.
I've noticed this aswell, but don't think the new update is the cause as I was experiencing it before.
Just out of curiosity do you use another device such as HOX? Because I have a HOX, and the swiping is much smoother on that, flicking goes from screen to screen rather than a drag which the Nexus required, if you do use another device perhaps its just the change in device like my case ?
Hmmm.
Cant decide whether or not to take it back and try a replacement.
As said above i have to now use a full swipe across the screen with my finger while holding the tablet in the other hand. I cant just use one hand and flick it with my thumb like i used to be able to.
Ive done a factory reset but that hasnt helped at all.
Ill upload a video of the problem soon so you guys can compare it to yours.
OK heres a video of the problem...
Let me know if you guys have the same
Bump

I've noticed that my home screen is not as responsive, though I can't tell in your video if it's as severe. I have to make a strong swipe to move to the next page or it will just bounce back to the current page I'm on. So sometimes it takes me a couple times to switch screens since I'm used to it normally changing. Hope that makes sense.
I run CNA 3.8.0 which uses 4.1.2; I haven't noticed that problem previously on 4.1.1
I also have to swipe the notification bar further in order for it to stick. I used to only have to go 1/3 to less than 1/2 of the screen for it to work.
I have the same issue

I have %100 same issue. Just like in your video.
I hope google will solve this with 4.2
Same issue, would agree that it is worse for the first 20-30 seconds after waking up the screen. Really is quite a pain.
This definitely happens for me, and it definitely started with the 4.1.2 update. It's not a big deal to me, but I can't believe Google didn't catch it.

I hope google solve this with 4.2. Because it's very annoying .!!
Glad its not just my device thats broke.
Lets hope 4.2 sorts it out.
How did google not notice this when they were doing tests...
Only place I notice this is home page and app drawer. New with 4.1.2, and quite irritating. I blame the Apple rubber band patent!
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
I've got a new c9O 32GB and mine does the same thing. Its better if I use one hand to hold it from the edges while using the other hand to touch. Using one hand to hold and swipe/scroll/ anything is an effort in futility. And its not just at the Home screen/App menu for me. It also locks up completely from time to time. Do we know what kind of memory the 32GB model uses? Not happy about this at all. Asus really screwed up on this one.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA Premium HD app
I have this issue as well. My first nexus which was a 16gb didnt have this problem but my current one which is a 32gb does this, especially with the notification bar which is quite annoying. Not sure if its because of 4.1.2 or if its the hardware itself because it updated immediately when i got it so didnt have a chance to use the 32gb before it updated.
has anybody tried the 4.2 update to see if it has fixed this?
Bump . I'm waiting for mine to come in the mail from Asus.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2
I think the problem is gone in 4.2.
At least I have not seen it yet - swipe across half the screen works again to change page.
I still get it in 4.2 :crying:

Yep !!! Deffo !
Also have you noticed, flicking doesn't change the page any more, you have to properly swipe.
Finally have you noticed you can't flick downwards for the Notifications you have to slide it all the way down?

Atleast its not just me
I haven't noticed this. I was having continual touch screen issues that seemed to get progressively worse as time went on. Days before I received my 4.1.2 update, majority of the time my tablet was unusable it seemed, requiring a reboot to work again. Then I finally got a notification that 4.1.2 was available. Since installing it, I've had *zero* touchscreen issues...
You can check me off next to "I fricken love it", however I have nothing to offer in regard to the other issues that you folks speak of. Maybe they were existent prior and I never noticed, who knows.
Damn, this is true. All. I thought it was TSF shell that I use, but it is not. I almost immediately upgraded to 4.1.2 so I was not that accustomed to 4.1.1, but now that you say, yes. You have to slide all the way, both screens and what bothers me more, notifications. Ugh.
I'm still not sure I'm following this. With both Apex and the stock launcher, I'm not noticing any significant change. If I'm in the app drawer and I want to swipe left or right, I can flick the screen and move my finger all but a half inch and the gesture applies accordingly and I see the screen move. Notifications feel no different as well. Am I missing something?
Same here homepage screens bounce back if I don't follow through with the swipe
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
Hey guys, I can flick home screens just fine if I do from the center of the screen. Imagine a vertical line from the camera to the charging port. Flicking from near the edges makes the screens scroll in the opposite direction every now and then.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
Having this exact problem to. For me I would hesitate to suggest that this is more prominent when the tablet just been woken up. Really wish it hadn't changed.
I'm having similar problems on my stock, rooted 4.1.2 N7. It's become harder to flick-swipe between screens and the like. I don't have a screen protector on my device either.
Was first raised in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1943613 guess more people are noticing it now. Hope it'll be fixed in 4.2
has anybody tried the 4.2 update to see if it has fixed this?
After updating to 4.2.1 i started noticing this issue in both AOSP browser, chrome, app drawer and notification pulldowns... Annoyed my ass off... anyway, after some hard googling, it appears to be a 4.2.X issue? So after flashing CM10 (4.1.2) the problem is gone, but the 4.2 sweetness is as well...
Please star the issue here: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=39892
Update:
After flashing 4.2.1 again, everything seems to be working just fine... I'm just left clueless
I used to have the same problem. Can anyone here who has this problem right now tell me if they have enabled "Magnification Gestures" under accessibility in the settings menu? If so, disable it and see if the problem is better.

How bout I love to flash Roms but every time I lose half my memory so I have to box cloud everything if I do so I can format internal storage is this because the 8 and 16 GB models running in the same threads maybe?

Disable hw overlay . then rebooted phone & turned it back off. No problems since.
The play music however nothing has worked.
Google says to uninstall updates to it then reinstall updates.. I'll have to mess with it to see if it has worked..
I love the phone for the most part. It just seems like they rushed to get it out to sell.
Doesn't really hold up to all the hype ,Keyboard cannot spell allot of words. touch sucks on it (light touch). Virtual keys don't hide in games.
Battery life yea no life in it. Factory launcher is boring.. I could go on. Lmao
I'm almost ready to give apple a try
Their are quite a few smaller issues as well.
Snapdragon battery guru seems to help the battery a tiny bit.

Really need some help setting this thing up

Help everyone. After a brief affair with the iPhone 5 this dinner, I have returned to Android via the Samsung Galaxy S 4.
Only problem is the bezels. They are too thin!! I literally can't type on this thing. Its not the size of the screen, I used to run a note, it's the bezels. Mainly the bottom one.
At the moment I run the GPE ROM. This is all fine and dandy, I'm loving the Nexus 4 like experience. But I miss the on screen buttons. They brought the bottom bezel size up significantly, making the typing experience amazing. I need that on this phone. But I also don't want the capacitive buttons. Luckily they dissapear when not lit up. And I found a flashable script to disable their functionality. I just need to find a ROM as stable as the GPE ROM and with on screen buttons and IR support like the GPE ROM.
Does anyone have any ideas? Other than the typing issue I like the phone. It's not nearly as comfortable as the 4.7" screen of the Nexus but its usable and really my only choice to get back to my Android home.
Thanks!

My girlfriend had the exact same problem and he's right - there are some great ROMs on there that will have exactly what you're looking for. There are some that coincide with the haptic buttons and some that are stand alone and do not use them at all.
Some can be found at:

You can also find more by searching for specific ones.

One last question, is vibration alerts like really weird on this phone? Not just the ROM, I mean the phone in general. The vibrator is extremely loud, doesn't buzz very well, and with notifications it'll either go off in three very strange bursts or two very short bursts.
This is nothing like my iPhone, nexus 4, galaxy bite 10.1, or really any device I've ever used.

So, this ROM is amazing!!! Well I just have one small issue, the nav bar covers up the bottom portion if NY screen, so typing in the message fields in the Messages app doesn't work, and I can't see the footer in most web pages in Chrome.
Other than that, wow! Smoothest ROM I've ever used! With Dynamic Notifications from the play store the ROM is literally perfect, once I figure out the NavBar issue and how to disable the capacitive buttons (the flashable script I found didnt work :/)

A couple of things:
1. Keep in mind, using Dynamic Notifications on an Android 4.2 rom will result in battery drain while the notification is active. An Android 4.3 rom would be better for that, since it has the new "NotificationListenerService" feature.
2. For disabling the capacitive buttons, it might be worthwhile to move to a rom that has full hardware key rebinding. I'm a big fan of SlimBean. There is a settings screen that lets you choose exactly what each of the buttons does, and you can just set it all of them to "none", and then disable button backlighting in Display settings.
SlimBean has it's own look and feel, because the DPI is very low and the Slim logo is inserted a few places. All of this can be changed, though, if you prefer a more stock experience.
Feel free to PM me if you have any questions; I'll be happy to help.

nexus 4 battery life after 4.3 update ?

so let's get to the bottom of the nexus battery life issue. How long is your nexus 4 battery life after 4.3 updated get or last , whether it set to default setting of the device itself or with a minimum setting such a display brightness level, silent profile, etc ?
and do you know how long you need to get your phone fully charged from empty using original n4 charger ? any trick or possible way to charge the phone itself faster ?
I'm just wondering and should I get nexus 4 or moto x ? but F***, I hate when that beautiful phone has been locked by carrier and has a bloatware since I'm a heavy multitask user and most of the time spend his time with browser and apps and whatsapp messenger .
sorry for my bad word but really hoping your honest review for the n4 battery life after 4.3 .
did you get 8 hours if you keep playing with it and also keep turn on and turn off your phone every 10-15 minutes while you're walking or hang out with your friends ?

Some custom kernels like for instance Franco Kernel support fast charging if you are rooted. If i we`re you and you can i would wait for the Nexus 5 that will come out in a few months. The N4 is very cheap atm and batterylife isn`t bad at all. Also depends on user usage and installed apps/widgets and syncing.

The Nexus 4 is a great phone, you will not regret buying it. Sold my Galaxy S4 because of the lags and stuttering software. Also the N4 will get KLP Android 5.0 soon also after the release of the Nexus 5.

whatttt ? you sold your s4 ? how come? I mean and I thought it's great phone, and the time when you feel lagging is the phone is rooted or factory default ?
thank you for your honest opinion cause I know nexus 4 is not great like high end phone such as like htc one but the reason is I wanna get n4 because it has no bloatware and it's the pure android and I'm so happy the carrier didn't put any their apps into that phone.
anyway, nexus 5 will be using LG again? my friend told me will be similar like LG G2
You might start laughing but I just ordered a Nexus 4 to get a feel. If I like it, it might replace my HTC One and when the 5 comes out, it might replace my Note 2.
I'm a plain vanilla user (plain Android no rooting or nothing) and slowly am getting sick of the Wifi, lag and other problems all other phones have.
I got this idea since I switched to the Nexus 10 and noticed that there's maybe less bells and whistles but the thing works very well.
Let's see...

Let's see...

you replace your htc one with nexus 4 ? how come ? is your htc one is google play edition ?
If you think about it the Nexus 4 has the same CPU settings as the S4 and HTC One the only category that it loses in is screen resolution.
Of course the other two phones have more better technology but when it comes to software wise the Nexus 4 will be right up there with them

I seriously think about it. It's not a Google Edition and I'm fed up with all the little things that just don't work. I have the impression that all these overlays (touchwiz and whatever they're called) only cause malfunctioning. My HTC is my business phone so changing it for the Nexus, I'll quickly know what pure android is worth.

talking about pure android that coming from nexus , do we have to clean cache or apps cache from the setting itself every once a week ? such a browser cache , and any other apps cache that we can found from settings-apps-(click random apps icon)- clean cache , ?
I'm confuse and I'm sorry to bring this up such an iPhone we don't have to worry about this cache thing or cache that coming from apps and there's no feature in iPhone like clean cache apps that we need to worry about . (and once again sorry comparing this with apple stuff )
so back to the problem since I'm only talking about google product should we be worry about apps cache ? maybe that's also the reason why the phone can be lagging because too many cache from the apps itself that we didn't notice or care enough to clean it up every once a week ? or by the system default is there any feature that the system will clean the cache that coming from 3rd party apps, background apps (all apps that running in the background). Cause I got paranoid and confuse what should I do , that's why I also install advanced task killer and always set them to high priority and every 30 minutes kill all apps to make sure this phone will always have a room for RAM.
but please correct me if I'm wrong , thank you
Using PA 3.99 and faux enhanced stock kernel I still have ~80% battery left after over 8 hours of use (using the phone every 10-15 mins or so). I always use automatic brightness set to medium. Not too sure what "battery life issue" you are trying to get to the bottom of.
As for the task killers/ cache cleaners, there's really no point. All you are really doing is making your phone work harder to do nothing at all. You should be thinking of unused RAM as wasted RAM. If your phone needs more RAM to run something it will free some up as needed. The task killers are really just using more RAM and battery.

sorry, but what do you mean by PA 3.99 ? and faux ? is it hard to change the kernel for a beginner or a person didn't know how to rooted or modified any kernel ? and also modified kernel or changing the kernel, is that gonna affected to the device to become unstable ? and I believe changing the kernel is coming from unofficial google, am I right ?
