Weak cell signal? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

So I just finished a 1500 mile road trip with my S4 as navigator. When I got home I noticed my cell signal strength seemed a bar low. Now that I'm at work I have 1 bar instead of the 3 or 4 I usually get. This doesn't seem to affect my phone from making calls or downloading mail and apps. the phone was on my dash in a holder (and in it's case) for 90% of the trip with the back facing the sun and a few times the back was quite warm. I was rooted and stock the whole time.
Just curious if anyone has run into this?

So like the proverbial cheese I stand alone? That's cool, if I run across any fixes for this I'll be sure to post it for future searches.

Problems losing signal while driving with 8125

So I have been able to repeat this problem. I noticed it just started happening in the last 2 months or so.
Scenerio:
I turn my phone off (or screen off), start driving say 3+ miles. When I get out of my car, I turn my phone back on. Then I notice the EDGE icon has a X and the signal bar has a X. It then proceeds for about 5-10 seconds finding a signal pretty quickly.
Now I know for a fact that during this time when the phone is off, I am unable to get calls because it doesn't look for a signal until I turn the phone on. This is a pretty big problem as this obviously shouldn't be normal. Anyone else experience this?
I currently have the standard 64K sim, didn't get the 3G yet.
anyone experience this?
i guess it depends on where u live, and where towers are located.
I haven't noticed this behavior.
What's the deal with the 3G SIM? Can we swing by any Cingular store and pick one up? What's the benefit over the 64k chip?
It sounds as though the 3G card doesn't benefit the Wizard at all, too bad this brand new device doesn't support the newer technology
3g isnt even available anywhere yet. i think its only good on 4 city blocks of NY or somewhere completely remote. 2008 i think
im in nashville, 3g works nearly all over nashville on my blackjack. It would be awesome if it worked on my 8125 aswell, sadly, only edge is working!

Lost Signal, Never Came Back [Fishing]

I'm just fishing for some others who might have experienced this problem, and then for any possible solutions.
Short: When I lose signal for an extended period of time, it never comes back. I have to perform a reboot or turn airplane mode on and off (which seems to take around 2-3 minutes when this issue occurs) for signal to return.
Long (to give you a better idea of what I'm talking about):
The other day I visited the Marine Corps Museum. While inside, I lost signal. After about an hour or so we left the museum and headed towards DC (that's Washington, D.C. - the nation's capital and one of the best areas to be a T-Mobile customer).
I hadn't tried to use my phone since I had first walked inside the museum, but about 20 minutes after leaving I pulled out my phone to text message a friend and I noticed I still had no signal. I waited for a minute to see if the signal would come back, but it never did.
I rebooted my phone and my signal returned (full bar HSDPA).
I know I wasn't in a bad signal area. I was on Route 1 North, which I know for a fact has great data coverage with T-Mobile. There are a couple of spots on I-95 that drop signal, but it's usually between Fredericksburg and Stafford for about 0.5 miles (I was nowhere near there).
Has anyone experienced a similar issue?
I have this same issue daily. I do not get a signal at work and have to reboot or turn airplane mode on then off to regain a signal. It is frustrating to say the least.
I'd like to draw your attention to those two threads: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=632552 and http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?/topic/1599-loss-of-signal-no-reacquisition-issue/
Right now I'm logging the output of logcat to SD card, waiting for the issue to reappear... it would be awesome if we had a way to reliably reproduce the issue, but so far, I didn't find one.

GPS- success with phone orientation...

I know this sounds crazy.. and until I tried it over and over.. I did not believe it either..
I did the hardware fix , where you bend up the gps antenna a bit, so it touches the cover when closed. but I litteraly had almost no change in signal.. like I could not even get the GPS restore to work..
I was pi$$Ed..
so I took another look at the phone / antenna etc.. got be thinking about signal and its orientation.. the GPS ant. is on the back of the phone, where it gets covered by your hand faces the ground or whatever is under it.. so I turned it- landscape..screen facing me.. clock wise... so the e from tmobile is top side..
guess what.. it works
I am locking on to 9-12 sats..every time..
let me know what you find happens..
How fast are the locks. Te issue is not how many sats since it only needs a few to get an accurate signal. The problem is that the phone takes 1900% longer than any other phone I've ever used to lock, which makes the GPS functionality virtually useless for geotagging pictures and posts to Facebook, twitter, google+ as well as checking into places.
Until it gets a decent lock the bubble around your location is miles in diameter.
Phone literally take upwards of 10 minutes to get a lock at times.

with in 10 seconds I was locked in w/less than 40 ft accuracy

a little exaggerated perhaps? my phone is the original batch and i've never had it take ten minutes for a lock. i mean i'm in Manhattan so the wifi assist probably helps it alot in terms of lock. the gps on the vibrant was never good enough for navigation but good enough for everything else imo.
I don't know about you but all my gps successes didn't last. first time i did all my gps fixes, it worked great. as time went on, went back to sh|t.
10 minutes it about right for me at the moment... ill try the orientation thing lol
Sent from a cell tower to the XDA server to you.
Yea one of the members here found this out a lonnnng time ago ever since then I always face my phone with the back facing the sky to get that first lock. Most of the times it works

Agreed, same experience I've been having. There are some good days and there some days that it's flat out stubborn like a bull. It won't even lock even on a clear night sky.

[Q] Signal bar goes from full to nothing randomly

Ever since I got a replacement phone Ive had this issue- while on the Sprint network my signal will randomly go from full to nothing at all. Yet when I use roam control to go into roaming, the signal always stays at full strength
The other thing I noticed is that when I dial into the 3282 menu, someone elses username is there instead of mine. When I run connectbot and use getprop, no MSL # is there either
Anyone know whats going on with the phone and if this can be fixed?
getprop ril.MSL
It is filtered from just getprop.
My signal has always done that.
Updated profile may fix the user name?

Thanks that command did the trick to get the msl- I was able to go in and manually change the username now.
Is there any settings in the data menu to improve the signal? Its almost like its jumping back and forth between a good and bad tower?
Not that I know of. That is what I suspect is the case with me as I have about 3 towers that are surrounding me from various sides and I think it is hopping between them... not sure there is anything to do for it but I haven't really seen any ill effects from it.

The weird thing is it never used to do this before when I first got the phone. When I was in the same areas the signal bar was always full and would never drop. I wonder if its a tower issue or something they changed with an update.
Sometimes when people call me they say it goes straight to voicemail though which worries me
Could be the modem. Some people think el30 is not as good as ei22 or ec05. Maybe try some others.
For calls calls going to vm, that can happen if you are using data in a 1x area. Also can happen if you have accidentally switched on ddtm in call settings.

This is going to be plain and a tad bit retarded but a solution is WiFi, as far 3G and 4G mine has always done this but i can testify that in my house i used to get ****ty service like 0 to 1 bar when i was on EC05 i switched EL30 now to FB15 and say much more improvement more consistent to 3-4 bars.
PRL updates could help if you roam around there. newest as of today is 60685
I've been having this problem too for about two months now. But as you said roaming works fine so I just assume it's a sprint tower issue and force roam whenever I'm on wifi.
I have had this issue for a year or so... started a while after I first rooted.
You can hold my epic in one hand, my wife's epic in the other... her bars stay steady, maybe fluctuate between 2 or 3 bars occasionally... mine randomly and erratically jump from 2 or 3 to nothing, stay there for 30 seconds or so... and jump back up.
While its annoying and distracting, I've never had a problem with dropping calls or losing data. I even took the phone apart to make sure the antenna had not come loose. Problem persisted over several roms and several modem Odin flashes, just won't go away!
Mine does the same, it'll have full bars, drop down to nothing, but my 3g/4g still work fine (off wifi)... i just ignore the signal bars because most of the time my data still works, albeit a tad slow.

Essential Phone antenna issues when holding the phone?

I have discovered that if I'm in a location with mediocre signal (but WITH reception), that if I hold the phone, the signal (bars) will often drop to 0, and carrying out a phone conversation is near impossible. But if I put the phone down (put it on speaker), the bars/reception come back and I can carry out the conversation.
The effect is pretty bad, sometimes going from 3 bars to 0.
I'm on Verizon.
Anyone else experiencing this?

I notice this from time to time as well. I dont know if its more sensitive to certain bands or what but I dont see it all the time but I have seen it more than I would like. Thought it was just me and my service.
Yeah i noticed that as well. I leave !my phone alone overnight, I get "green" reception. Once I start using it, the reception gets temperamental and it drops to yellow, sometimes red

I have the same issue. It seems more prominent when I grip the top edges of the phone. Lose significant signal on both WiFi and cellular. Reminds me of antenna gate of the iPhone.
Apple -> "Grip Gate"
Ive noticed that the bars go to nothing when im on WIFI with WIFI calling enabled. No matter how good or bad the signal is where i am. Once i kill WIFI, the bars jump right back up. Im assuming this is a power saver feature. I dont remember my V20 doing this, but I do recall my 6P dropping the bars by half
