I've been running dhacker29's CM 10.1 preview for several weeks. It's pretty solid. I'd like to update to one of his more recent builds. I'm new at this, however, and want to be cautious. I have TWRP.
Could anyone point me to:
1. A checklist for wiping everything and flashing a new version of 10.1?
2. A checklist for updating to a newer version of 10.1 without wiping all data.
A good checklist might go (and this shows what I am currently inclined to do):
1. restart into recovery
2. wipe cache and dalvik
3. factory reset
4. wipe cache and dalvik again
5. install new image
6. install new GAPPS
7. reboot.
I'm sure any experienced user will tell me 8 things wrong with that 7-step list. Which is precisely the advice I'm asking for.

if you are simply installing an update, all you should need to do is:
1. restart into recovery
2. mount system
3. wipe cache/dalvik
4. install update zip
5. reboot system
I don't think you'll need to re-install GAPPs.
you don't need to wipe system or do a factory reset unless you are installing a different ROM.
most folks recommend to backup your current system first though, but I generally don't unless I'm really happy with my ROM

Disclaimer: I'm used to my old Evo 4G and use a triple wipe script built into my recovery (smelkus) whenever I flash a rom. It pretty much wipes everything.
For the Nexus 7, what needs to be wiped to flash a rom? I did a factory reset, wiped data, wiped cache, wiped system, wiped dalvik-cache, and then flashed a new rom, but I wasn't sure if all that was necessary. I'm using the latest TWRP recovery.
If I'm moving from one rom based on a jelly bean version to another based on the same version, am I ok?
Can I assume upgrading to a new version of the same rom that I don't have to wipe? (I know this one is rom specific, but in general.)
Can I leave data and will that retain my apps? Otherwise, I use Titanium Backup religiously on my Evo and now on my Nexus 7.
I searched within some of the rom instructions as well as the rooting guides, but didn't see anything specific as to what to wipe. Some threads seem to say just factory reset and maybe dalvik-cache.
Instructions with what to wipe usually come in the original post of each ROM. Usually the same ROM with different version only requires a cache wipe while moving between different ROM's requires a full wipe/reset + dalvik.
Worse comes to worse you try something and it doesn't boot and you get back into recovery and fix it.

I got a bad case of the lag (sometimes i have to wait 30s for the launcher to show the icons after unlocking the screen <.<'). Tried the Forever Gone approach, but i'ts still laggy and i guess it's because i'm still on the old code base (with Paranoid Android 2.14). So i've decided to do a full update - new bootloader, last PA (2.2), and a new kernel (i'm still with the stock one). Also i think to do a full wipe as i'm going along with it. I'm using TWRP.
So i did my research, but it'll be nice if somebody does a quick sanity check on my todo list
0. Backup (i don't like the idea of full apk+settings backup, so i'll try to cherrypick the things i want to backup - like game saves, etc)
1. Full wipe - nuke /data, /system, /boot
2. Flash new bootloader (JZO54K_bootloader.zip)
3. Flash new Paranoid Android 2.2
4. Redownload all apps from Appstore
5. Restore backup
The kernel part is missing, because i'm still undecided with what should i go. I don't want overclocks, but i want it to be able to undervolt (apply Jay's buttery goodness maybe). If someone can recommend me something i'd be grateful.
So... that's about it
This is what I did when I updated but instead with CNA.
0. Backup
1. Full wipe
2. Flash new rom ( I flashed CNA 3.7.0 before they removed it for bug fixes)
3. Reboot and make sure rom is functional
4. Reboot into recovery and flash new bootloader
5. Reboot again to test, reboot to recovery to test, and lastly fastboot
6. Restore backup from Titanium
You forgot an important steps.. flash GAPPS after you flash PA. Otherwise your google apps won't work.
Do this:
1. Backup
2. Wipe Data/Cache/ Delvik Cache
3. Flash PA 2.3
4. Flash GAPPS
5. reboot
Then you set up your nexus 7 however you want, with the help of titanium etc :good:
Ah, yes - i count this as a thing that goes hand to hand with the PA flashing so that's why it's not there.
So - tomorrow when i have some free time i'll wipe the lagging monster

I know there's a lot of info on this subject, but im still confused about a few things related to simply updating to a new version of same rom.
some says i have to wipe all, clear cache and dalvik cache every time, others talk about dirty updating which i guess is without wipe, but do i still need to clear cache and dalvik, or just dalvik cache?, and do i have to flash gapps every time i just upgrade same rom?
like going from 2.50 > the latest 2.52, what i did was:
1. downloaded both pa_grouper-2.52-27OCT2012-190304.zip, and gapps-jb-20121011-signed.zip and put them in root of my nexus 7
2. went to goomanager and clicked "flash ROMs", where i selected my grouper-2.52-27OCT2012-190304.zip, clicked "Order and flash selected" and on next screen checkmarked "Wipe cache/dalvik cache partition"
3. clicked flash, and waited..
4. did same procedure (step 2 and 3) with the gapps-jb-20121011-signed.zip and now im not sure if that all i needed to do, or if there's something i don't have to do next time there a minor update.. or can i skip wipe cache?, or skip flashing gapps (unless there's a newer version of gapps)?

but i still wonder if it's needed to wipe cache/dalvik because it seems to remove some login info fx. in gmail, wallpaper and such, and if it's not needed, then i might as well not do that

If you dont wipe them, it can cause troubles.
Also, it shouldnt affect anything, doesnt for me

Yes. Flashing the rom, then gapps, wiping cache and dalvik doesnt wipe any apps or apps data
I am currently using a another custom rom on S4 SGH-I337M.
I would like to install the Slim Bean 2 stable rom on to it.
I am very new the installing roms etc,. Just rooted and installed CWM on my phone last week.
My question is do I doing the following procedure to install
5.Now, perform data wiping task. To do so, select wipe data/factory reset, then select Yes on next screen to confirm your action. Wait few minutes till the data wipe is complete. Now come back to CWM recovery main menu. Select wipe cache partition and after wiping process done, select Wipe Dalvik Cache under advance option to perform Dalvik cache wiping.

As I mentione I have been doing quite a bit of reading and I was able to following the instruction when i first rooted to install custom Rom my phone. But is a little confusing with so much out there to read.

Okay dude I was a noob too just a few weeks ago and I was staying over the little things too. Basically the only things you need to wipe are cache and dalvik cache and format/data but beware you should always have a backup of your current Rom because wiping data will make your phone unable to boot incase the zip file you downloaded doesn't install. In that case you can simply restore your rom download anther and try again so yeah

There's no real difference between those 2 guides.
Slim ROMs always recommend manually formatting system (as well as wiping cache / dalvik / data) but in theory it shouldn't be necessary. As you flash a ROM if you watch all the text on your screen you'll see that it formats the system itself. When you do a data wipe / factory reset you'll notice that it also wipes the cache at the same time. There's no harm doing it twice and I usually end up doing more than necessary.
As the previous poster said, ALWAYS make a backup before you do anything serious. My backups consist of:
- nandroid backup (with CWM or TWRP)
- back up all user apps and data (never system apps/data) with Titanium Backup Pro (I actually do these 3x/wk on a schedule)
- backup Calls and Messages to xml with TiBu Pro
Whenever I change from one custom ROM to another (say, Cyanogenmod to Slim) or one Android version to another (4.3 to 4.4) I do all of the following...
- wipe data / factory reset
- wipe cache
- wipe dalvik
- mount system
- format system
- flash ROM
- flash GAPPS
- with Kit Kat (Android 4.4) I've also been flashing SuperSU1.69.zip since some of the early Kit Kat ROMs were breaking Superuser.
- reboot
- follow the basic setup procedures to get your main Google account going
- open Play Store and get TiBu and Pro Key again
- open TiBu and do a batch action: "restore missing apps with data", then restore calls and messages from xml
- go into settings and tweak away......
When I update to a new version of my current ROM (like a new nightly or weekly or new stable version) I do the following...
- wipe cache
- wipe dalvik
- flash ROM
- flash GAPPs
- reboot
This is a "dirty flash" and can cause problems so do it at your own risk. Worst case scenario is that you might have to restore your backup or do a proper full wipe and try again...

I should also mention, if you've already taken a stock phone and followed instructions to root and get a ROM going then what you're trying to do now is even easier. As long as you have CWM and make a backup you don't need to worry. Just make sure you always download the correct version of the ROM for your phone as well as the correct GAPPS package for the Android version you're flashing.
Hello, I've flashed cyanogenmod 12.1 onto my galaxy S4 and installed gapps, but getting a Google play has stopped along with other Google services. Can anyone let me know what I'm doing wrong? Steps I did:
1. Go into recovery
2. Wipe data/factory reset
3. Installed cm-12.1-20150927-NIGHTLY-jfltexx.zip from download.cyanogenmod.org
4. Install gapps from opengapps.org (ARM/5.1/Nano)
5. Wipe cache partition
6. Wipe dalvik cache
7. Fix permissions
8. Reboot

Yes I also tried without that step but unfortunately the same errors.
After switching over to TWRP, everything works! So if anyone is having the same issue, switch to TWRP.
Yea twrp is recommended for flashing cm rom especially latest version
