The surfaceflinger seems to have indeed been fixed, but there is still a memory leak in the system, which I now encountered it for the 2nd time. I wanted to make screenshots, but just after I made the 2nd one, the tablet soft rebooted. It didn't freeze, it didn't show any google logo, it went directly to the boot animation and then the tablet booted. This seems to have been fixed it, unlike the previous surface flinger issue where you needed a normal reboot.
Anyway, in the 1st screenshot you can see 44h of uptime, in the 2nd one I took a pic in quick system info which displayed 198mb of free ram, just after I cleared all the processes, but then the tablet immediately soft rebooted and apparently didn't save the screenshot.
Running "ps su" in terminal emulator showed 56 rss, if I typed "su" 1st and then "ps su" there were 2 rows, one with 56 rss and the second with 116 rss, so the surface flinger has apparently been fixed.
Running factory image 4.3, rooted, deodexed, stock kernel. Has anyone experienced this issue on 4.3 so far?
LE: Oh I forgot to attach the first screenshot, sorry. Anyway it's a pic from cpu spy, which displayed 44h of uptime, so it's not that important.
I had just nearly the same phenomen. But my n10 softrebooted when I was starting to examine the process table. I just had found surfaceflinger, so I'm sure it was not that process, but sadly I hadn't found the mem-eater, when the colored X appeared.
I had done a dirty flash from aokp-pub, so I am not sure to blame android-4.3. But mem-leaks stick like sh** on a shoesole, so I'm sure, if it does not result from dirty flashing, we will hear soon from a new memory leak... (hopefully in some opensource part - cm and aokp team are faster in n10 support then google...)
I haven't had a single reboot since I flashed 4.3. My uptime is up into the 90+ hours range, and it would be higher if i hadn't had to reboot to install root, Adaway and the AOSP browser. I mainly use the tablet to browse the internet (using the AOSP browser) and reddit (via reddit news app), plus some youtube videos (using the youtube app) occasionally. I rarely play games, though I have played a little Real Racing 3 since the last bootup.
My advice is to download the stock rom from the google developers website, and completely wipe the tablet clean via the "flash-all" script. Re-install only the bare minimum apps, and see if the issues persist.
I have 4.3 from Friday. No restarts at all, but I noticed two times strange behaviour. Tablet was soo slow, every action was soo laggy. I had to restart it. Maybe its apex fault. Im not sure

Ladies and gentlemen, I present you the "suspect": Google's Chrome, the all time crap browser.
I also mostly use the AOSP browser and occasionally Opera for some downloads that I can't do with the stock browser. I installed Chrome a few days ago to see how it works in 4.3 and it does indeed work better, but the 1st memory leak I encountered happened the day I used chrome, I'm sure of it. I wasn't much impressed with it so I went back to AOSP browser and everything worked fine, then I decided to give it another try: bam, memory leak again, yesterday, the day I used chrome again.
Also, I read some comments on the forums about people having reboots on 4.3, WHILE using chrome.
In fact, in 4.2.2 while we had the surface flinger problems, I remember that chrome was the main cause.
I am back to using AOSP and Opera and everything is working superbly.

Are you rooted? If so, there is a bug in SuperSU V1.41 which causes CPU usage to sit at 100%...

Yep rooted. My Chrome is disabled. I hope update supersu will solve the problem with cpu usage. Thx for info about it

Same here, might be SU fault, but I was using 1.43 when the tablet starts to lag heavily without rebooting. Couldn't find what the culprit was, CPU usage was normal, there was plenty of ram, even tried killing all background apps and services with no luck. Not even a hot boot could fix the lag.
Since then I've updated to SU1.5 so we'll see how that goes.

I got a reboot last night. Opened Google Now and it went to the bootanimation. Stock 4.3 with the Flaming Monkey Kernel, SU 1.45. It was my first reboot since January, when I went to custom ROMs. Went back to stock kernel, we'll see if that helps. Also, what AOSP Browser are you guys using? The one from the Installer from the play store closes every 5-10 minutes, and the apk ripped from CM 10.1.1.0 crashes on start-up...And I stopped using Chrome in January, and never had a reboot until Chrome was installed on 4.3. Coincidence? Probably not...

Never had any issues even on 4.2.2 with any sort of memory leak. Was able to go at least 5 days without any reboots and that's with using the chrome browser. I haven't used 4.3 long enough to post my findings with it but so far after 3 days it seems to be about the same. The only thing I can think of is that I bought my Nexus 10 in May so I don't know if a newer hardware version would make any difference.
Also, those of you with random reboots have you tried updating your boot loader yet? Not sure if or how it would make any difference but it's worth a shot.

Howdy folks,
I've been running custom roms since I first got my iconia. Though I went thru a brief period of over clocking I am now running a stock-based rom.
Browser crashes every once in a while have almost become a fact of life but I am curious, are they also for you? How often do you experience one?
I am currently on FLEXREAPER RF1. In 3 hours I've crashed opera twice (once with flash) and the stock browser ounce.
In a typical day, perhaps 2-3x on stock browser is the norm for me.
I look forward to finding out if my iconia is messed up or if this is normal. Thanks for your input!

Define "crash". Getting Force Close errors? General Protection Fault? Or just the browser closes without warning?
I might get browser close a couple of times a day. No big deal. I get it on my pc also.
Browser crash ALOT for me usually becoming unresponsive while playing or using flash content.
Opera, stock, dolphin all the same.
chrome not so much but then again it doesnt play flash so i dont use so much.
Really annoys me alot to be honest not sure if its a ICS issue or not.
As for other crashes no not really just browser for me
Cheers
I used to have the browser close pretty frequently on me in gingerbread (stock os/stock browser). I have not noticed any since ics (also all stock)
Stock browser usually quits to homescreen suddenly. Sometimes it remember the site it was on sometimes not.
Opera crashed on particular site by exiting to home. It also froze up while playing episode on daily show website.
So far (haven't had it long) opera seems stable but a page here and there mess it up. Plus that flash issue. Will stick with it awhile longer to see if it does better on stability. What I mean is it's not random like stock.
Evelbug, how long do you use the tablet and how long have you been on stock? Been thinking of switching over to see if more stable.
Thanks!
Have only had RF1 on tab since yesterday but experienced quite a few browser crashes at least with stock browser, hangs for a second then just closes. No FC or other message.
XDA Premium app has been doing the same thing so not sure what's up with that.
I'm on flexreaver (12.5, I think), and haven't had trouble with the stock browser crashing. I get the occassional screen flicker and have to reset my wifi once in a while, but the browser seems well behaved.
quick update, in case anyone's browser shopping,
opera mobile all day today and no closes or crashes. a few sites it doesn't do well on, but I guess that's what the stock one will be for...
I have had it in the beginning (browser just closing) when I just install a rom but after a few days it is gone.
I got my Nexus 7 in the first batch from Gamestop on the day of release. Initially, the performance was very fast, even faster than my Galaxy S2. However, after a couple of weeks now, it has become extremely slow. It is still stock, havent even rooted it. It is a 16gb model, and has close to 10gb free. I have tried clearing cache, closing all running applications, restarting but nothing really has worked.
The problem is almost every app is very slow. I get a notification of an email, i click on it and then stare at the white email screen for almost 10 sec before it opens up (the regular email app). It almost feels like a different device now than what i bought few weeks back. Other applications that run equally slow - Google Reader, Chrome, WSJ (this is perhaps the worst), Fluent News Reader. I am not much into games so havent tried a lot of them.Oh, and it is no match now to my Galaxy S2 Skyrocket or even HP Touchpad Cm9 that i got rid of last week.
I don't want to exchange it as it does not suffer from all the other problems being reported here (and am afraid that the new one might exhibit those). Please help.
Just a guess, but you most likely loaded something on it that is doing that. Check what you have installed on it, perhaps uninstalling some of the larger things to see if you can figure out what is holding it up.
Stock Nexus 7 Image
If cleaning the device does not work, you can always flash back to the stock image, which can be found on developers.google.com
Be sure to backup your apps and data!
or for the most simple of us...
Setting>Privicy>Factory reset.
That will remove any app that might be causing it.
Be warned tho, i think on this device it wipes the internal storage...
how is your WiFi signal?
seeing how almost every app require internet access, the delay could be it trying to connect.
Actually I thought that too... but my wireless signal is very strong in my small apartment and i have 30mbps line. I checked with speednet app and i am getting 13mpbs down, 4 mpbs up on nexus 7.
I am happy that this seems like my issue only - i will try to remove apps one by one to see if it helps or worst case, i will do a factory reset.
I was wondering if there are any known culprit apps responsible for memory leaks or something.

I have noticed how mine has been very sluggish when there are apps upgrading in the background or installing, etc. Maybe turn off auto update for play store?

If you send me a PM, I'll give you my email address and I can help you narrow it down by using screenshots of your app drawer.
install watchdog task manager lite, it monitors app in the background and tells you which one is causing problems.
have you tried turning off gps (location service) and see if hats the issue?
same thing

Just wanted you to know you aren't alone here...I have been seeing the same exact behavior on mine. I have started to uninstall apps one by one. I must be a bad app or something. If not I'm gonna wipe it and start over. It does feel disconcerting to go from easily the best tablet experience I have ever had to it becoming so sluggish.
i have the same problem, mine did the same thing on stock, ran great for a week or two, then became unbearably slow. so i rooted it and it wiped all data and the problem seemed to be fixed. then another week or two passed and its back to slow. i found out after testing with quadrant it has something to do with the i/o on the device, because the i/o score was abnormally lower than all the devices. putting a custom kernel will help, but still the i/o score is still quite low. i dont want to wipe all data again and if anybody knows a fix it would be greatly appreciated
nexus 7 has Kingston eMMC, it is better then the crummy Prime Hynix eMMC, but is eMMC none the less, not proper NAND flash/SSD
Well you could've had a bad app that is bogging your system down. A factory reset may be the only option so you can start fresh

Check the cache size of your Google Playbook or Magazine apps. It keeps downloading large files (400 mb) and may fill up your storage...causing it to slow down?
Having the same issue after owning it for two days. I really wanted to like this tablet, but between the sluggishness, and other various shortcomings, I'm going to be returning mine.
I deleted WSJ app and it seems to have helped a lot - not as fast as new, but a lot better. One thing which still irritates me is email app which just seems to be too slow...
Sorry to say but mine so fast I can't keep it down it trys to fly away lol

has anyone been able to figure this out? I'm having the same problems and I've been running watchdog but there been no out of control process is on my device. I have wiped the device and the same thing just keeps happening after a little while it'll get very slow. it happens more often than not when there something in the background downloading are using the internet, but it's definitely not my connection because I've had no problems with any other devices.
Been getting similar behavior recently. cm10 euroskank, trinity 7.
Edit: in logcat, getting stuff like
I/Choreographer(10656): Skipped 30 frames! The application may be doing too much work on its main thread.
W/InputEventReceiver(10656): Attempted to finish an input event but the input event receiver has already been disposed.
I think I may have come across a solution. For me, the slowdowns were always connected to when something was downloading in the background, or when a process was using data, so I went through and turned off syncing on any non-essential Google services and other apps, and it seems to be working much better right now.
I'm having many many days with this tablet that are frustrating.... Today for instance, I have had 2 re-boots and 3 hangs!!! My Xoom on a custom JB ROM didn't have these issues....!!!
I can't recall for sure, but I think I had maybe 2 total random reboots, and no app FC's (on stock ROM). I use CM 10.1's nightlies now and haven't had any crashes or hangs.

is everything functional on cm10?
to the op, I have had the n10 hang while in chrome. when that happens, I have to reboot by holding down the power button until it kills power and reboots. on average probably once a few days. I am not a heavy user though. have tried dolphin browser and it too crashes although can't remember if it will hang the entire device.
Ever since I updated from stock, it runs hot and now getting reboots.
Never had an issues once and ran cool on stock rom.
Mines rebooted maybe 2 or 3 times total. Been using it about 4 hours every day for the past month. Hasn't been anything anywhere near what I'd call an issue. Running stock.
On a good day 1. On a bad day 4.
I turned off location services and stopped using chrome and have only had 1 random reboot in the last 2 weeks. Hopefully google fixes something soon.
None.
If I use chrome, its very likely that mine will crash. Using other browsers makes it less frequent. Hopefully they fix it asap.
I use my tablet for around 2-3 hours on work days and around 6 hours on days off. Today is a day off, and I've already had to force reboot it 3 times... I'm close to asking for a replacement, but I'm also going to try a few things before I do. There is no doubt about it. It should just work and it isn't. But before I send it back I will wipe and start over ( I am not doing any thing special with this device either. Everything is stock)
Most of the system hang's I get are almost always in Chrome. Sometimes Facebook or Twitter, and then when I have to force the reboot (pwr + vol up + vol down) it almost always reboots into installing a new app update... Which makes me wonder if that is the issue. I have disabled auto updating of apps, and have already had the same issue so I'm not convinced it was that after all.
So I guess I can either assume that my hardware is good and this is a software issue which I can wait for Google/Samsung to address or cut my losses and try and get a replacement device before X-mas... Right now the poll shows that more people are having a good experience than bad....
Thanks for the responses guys/gals..
Several a day with location services off.
It may hang up about 1 time per day. happened when portrate, almost.
I had a few at first i think it was due to the chrome browser on 4.2.1 but did a FDR and seems to be smooth now..
Also used the toolkit to root and works like a charm now
Haven't had any in CM10.1 but I had 1-2 a day with stock
Same here running aokp with ktoonz kernel. It's been more than a week without freeze/reboots. I don't game either tho & do use Ocean.

Depends on use. With heavy use every 3-4 hours? Its only rebooted once overnight. Mine seems more prone to do it while installing apps if I try to do something else while installing....although it will just as readily hang browsing with chrome. I was thinking of RMA but read some horror stories on that
Oh yea, Stock

I was getting somewhere around 1-3 per day on stock. I've given up waiting for Google to fix it, so am now on cyanogenmod nightlies, and have not had one single freeze or reboot since. This tablet is now perfect.

My experience is virtually the same as Pihrana. I am under the impression that the hangs and reboots are a software problem that is likely caused by my particular usage patterns or an app or setting (I have location settings disabled and it still hangs). Either way I have decided not to exchange it, as the problem will very likely be addressed in a future patch, and I might end up with a device with hardware problems (light bleed, etc) in addition to the existing software issues.
Hey guys,
I got my N10 in the very first batch, bought it on day one, so it's been around six months now. Lately, for the past month or so, I've been starting to experience some slowdowns, and it's starting to be hurting my experience a lot. My Chrome app, for instance, takes a long time to register, and if I press on the "Home" button to go back to my launcher, the button is highlighted in white for 5 seconds before effectively going back on the home menu. Does anyone know what can be done about that? I'm considering a factory reset, but I'd rather keep my saved data and files for my apps and not go through backing up my dozens of apps. Thanks

First, don't use Chrome, it still sucks when compared to the AOSP browser, download the app Greenify from the store and use SD maid to delete all the unneeded stuff you have on your Nexus.:good:
You could try doing a factory reset and perhaps try installing a new ROM or kernel whilst you are at it as there can be speed gains with some of the alternatives to stock. It doesn't really take long to back up your apps with the right program. Have you looked at titanium backup?

Even chrome beta is a large improvement over chrome. Most of the ROMs have large speed ups over stock so I would suggest that or at least a new kernel if you don't want to back everything up.

Sv: Slowdown
When I only have about 2gb or even 3 I think the sdcard gets awfully slow for me. I have 32gb version. Drop from 20mb write speed to below 5. And a lot of things are really slow. Cleaning up to get some more space solves it for me. Has happened twice so far. Not sure I my nexus is bad or if this is normal but a hint is to check your sdcard speed.

similar issues
I've experienced similar issues but i can say much of my slowness started immediately after the 4.2.2 update. Prior to the update, my N10 was performed flawlessly. I don't use chrome and will try out Greenify and SD Maid and see if that helps.
Quick update: I realized today that I thought my N10 was rooted, while it actually wasn't. I used the N10 rooting toolkit a month or so ago, and I thought it worked, but didn't actually try it. However, Greenify kept telling me to grant it SU and I ended up noticing I couldn't actually explore the root in ES File Manager, so I did a root and flashed the KManta kernel.
So far, it's EXTREMELY smooth, just like when I got it. However, having only 500mb of apps on it helps, hehehe.
I also received my Patriot Node, on which I'll put all my media files from now on. I am going to experiment to see which ones work and which ones don't.
I also deleted all the useless apps I had (which can be many). I am not sure of what I lost exactly, but I'm sure I didn't lose anythinig important, except for my Mass Effect Infiltrator save. Whatever
I almost flashed Paranoid Android, but then I figured I like the stock rom and didn't need a different one.
As for KManta, does the fast charger actually work? What does it do? The thread here on XDA doesn't say much, is there any way to have more info on its features?

It supposedly makes charging faster when connected to a computer usb port... I've never tried as I don't have a PC
I can tell you it does nothing when charging from the power adapter
Fast charge AFAIK is not implemented for our kernel yet

oh ok, great, good to know, thanks guys!
Just a noob question.. Assuming I don't change any value, is this kernel still supposed to be faster than the stock one?
Also, I'm guessing undervolting will make it slightly less powerful but eat less battery whereas survolting it will add to performance and kill the battery (and the hardware)?
Okay, this is getting ridiculous and im getting pissed. My N10 has been working without a hitch (and without a camera flash too) for the past 6 or 7 months since i got it but one thing that is happening now is getting very annoying is it just exits out of apps when the app is trying to load something...not exiting when the app itself is loading, but when the app is busy loading another task. Man im getting mad...so for example im on facebook the interface loads fine but when i start browsing pictures and an image is taking a few seconds to load and BAM, the program closes, another example i have the AOSP browser opened and im browsing the web, I type in a web address it starts to load, and BAM, closes, playing candy crush, it plays fine and then i try to ask for help from facebook and once it starts loading my friends and it does it again.i could go on and on. its happening on game apps, google apps its pissing me the heck off and it just started about a month ago. I have tried several roms thinking it was a memory leak somewhere or something for that matter and no luck. Ive tried trinity and KT kernels thinking the stock kernel was the culprit and still no dice. Ive even gone as far as to wipe out the whole device, everything to the fullest system format and reinstall a new stock image via wugs toolkit...still happening. Can anyone tell me why this is happening and is there a fix for this? Is anyone going through this crap too? The Dev forums have been quite lately but im sure this tablet still has very active users who can help because this is getting old. BTW I am running Purity latest rom with Franco kernel r12 just in case you need to know
Does this happen after you watch videos? For me, that's the only time..apparently the surface flinger eats up the RAM and hardly 20-30MB is left for other apps. So I guess the system starts force closing the apps. I don't think we have a permanent fix for this yet. However, the workaround I have applied is I disabled Chrome which is another RAM eater and since then this random force closing and even the random restarts problem seems to have been alleviated!
Another simpler option is to restart the tab whenever you feel it is starting to operate with a lag. Takes hardly 30 seconds And hope for Google to release the fix to the surface flinger issue with 4.3!
