Hi folks, imagine I'm doing something stupid here as I'm pretty new to Linux & Android but been searching for the answer and haven't found it... I've just bought a Nook Simple Touch and want to install NookManager. I've followed the instructions here and followed a guide to writing an SD card image in Linux here using the integrated SD card reader in my laptop with a micro SD -> SD adapter, but when I reboot the Nook with the card inserted it fails to boot into NookManager and launches the standard Nook software as usual, with an error message saying that the card needs to be formatted (fails to format when I tred to do so from the Nook).
Can someone point out what I'm doing wrong please? It's a PNY class 10 card btw - I've seen some comments about issues with class 10s and the Nook but assuming it's something fundamental I'm doing wrong based on the errors

I wrote my NookManager SD card from Linux, and it worked. I used an old Class 4 2GB card I had lying around.
Checklist:
* Insert card in card reader
* Unmount any auto-mounted partitions on the card
* Determine whole disc device node for the card (e.g. /dev/sde)
* Run 'dd if=NookManager.img of=/dev/sde' (or whatever device node your card shows up on)
* Run 'sync' and wait for writing to complete (sync normally doesn't return until this is the case, but if your card reader has an access indicator light, pay attention to that)
* Verify the written image by running 'cmp NookManager.img /dev/sde'. It should return 'cmp: EOF on NookManager.img' (i.e. /dev/sde is of greater capacity than the size of NookManager.img, but that every byte of NookManager.img is correctly written).
* Switch off Nook by pushing and holding power button on back
* Remove card from card reader and insert carefully into Nook
* Turn Nook on by pushing and holding power button again for about 30s.
NookManager should then boot. If it doesn't, I'd suspect either a faulty card, counterfeit card, or the aforementioned Class 10 bug.

Hi there. I'm new here and have been trying to absorb as much info as I can and learn. I've been trying to follow the verygreen guide to create a bootable SD card. However there's a step there that's not working as written.
The guide says to eject the SD card once the generic*.img has been imaged to the SD card and then re-insert it into the computer. The following step is to copy the ROM that I want to use (either the 7.1 beta or nightly). The problem I'm having is that when I go to re-insert the SD card, nothing pops up in My Computer.
Did I do something wrong?
Thanks very much in advance,
fuul4nook
P.S. This is a Kingston 4GB class 4 card that was connected to the PC with a USB adapter.
You may have... I managed to kill one making images and using them in my nook. If you know what drive its going into when you insert it try to format it and start over. If it doesn't format, you're screwed. If it does, just do the whole card image thing over again.
What you can try is pop-it into either your Nook or another Android device and try to format it through there.
I've had many instances where Windows would just not recongnize and SD card and the above at least put it back to its initial state.
Thanks for the responses. I was able to mount the SD card on another computer and on a Linux desktop, but my own refused to bring up the drive letter. I ultimately did as you guys suggested and reformatted the card on a different machine and started over.
Appreciate the help!
Hi all. So I'm pretty new to this whole nook color thing. I have been trying to follow the instructions to install CM7 to a microsd card (Sandisk, class 4, 4gb) but I don't seem to be having much success, as I'm getting a strange error when the install process is being run.
Here's what I've done:
1. Put microsd card into adapter and insert into the card reader in my laptop. Write the generic SD image to the card with winimage32
2. Re-size the boot partition from ~100mb to 1.5gb using Easus partition master.
3. Paste over the update-cm-7.1.0-encore-signed.zip file.
4. Eject card, remove from computer
5. insert microsd card into NC. Start up. I get a "...loading" without the CM logo, and then it starts to run through the install. During the install, I frequently get this error:
I/O error, dev mmcb1k1, sector [x] where [x] represents a bunch of different sectors (seriously it scrolls through a huge list)
I also sometimes see:
mmcb1k1, error -110 transferring data
It does a lot of inflating of files, gives me more of those errors, does some more inflating, and eventually concludes the install and shuts down the NC.
When I start the NC again I get the cyanogen logo, with "...loading," the screen briefly flashes, and then nothing. The NC screen is on, but it doesn't display anything.
So what am I doing wrong?? I'm very confused at this point.
I believe this is not your fault. (You are certainly not alone)
See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1297738.
Try again using an old Class-2 uSDHC card. If it is not marked, it is class-2.
If that works please let us know.
I'm going to try installing one more time, then run out to Microcenter to pick up a replacement card. Any suggestion on how I identify a class-2 card that would work to pick up?
PNY 2GB with no class marking from Sears worked for me.

Get a usb adapter for writing to your microsd. I was having all kinds of errors
with new sandisk cards using the same method you are, then after changing to the
usb adapter they all are working.

Sooo I went to Microcenter and bought an unmarked Sandisk 2gb card (I'm assuming its class 2, though I don't know for sure). Installed CM7 on the first try. I'm not sure what is going on with the Sandisk class 4 4gb card, but I think there's an issue with it...
Excellent news.
You might be interested to know that I have just managed to clone 7.1.0 Release onto a SanDisk 4GB - see the related thread mentioned above for details.
Thanks for the update
a. Completely reformat your 4GB uSD.
b. Redo step 1 above with Win32DiskImager, using old version.
c. You can ignore your step 2 above.
d. Follow your steps
Would appreciate some guidance, if anyone can help...
In December we got two new Nook Color Devices, one had 1.2 and the other 1.3. Had one 8gb micro sd card, and without understanding much about it, I followed verygreen's instuctions to create a card for dual booting. The 1.3 machine was used for installing cm7 (7.10) and the latest gapps file. But the card was then removed from that unit and inserted into the other Nook Color which had 1.2 in its firmware. I now think this was improper but am unsure what the repercussions were.
The system was used succesfully for several weeks. Occasionally the Nook side was booted from menu. Then suddenly after a cold boot, CM7 started but the virtual sd card was not recognized. Removed the card from the unit and investigated using Windows XP and Minitool Partition Wizard and found the "CM7 SDCARD" partition was corrupted. I reformatted that partition in Minitool, and then used the card for about another week in the 1.2 NC. At that time multiple partitions on the card suddenly became corrupted and fearing the sd card itself was defective I ordered some higher quality sd cards (now have 4 8gb sandisk class 4 cards to play with). Meanwhile the 1.2 NC accidentally booted into the Nook side with wifi enabled when it was charging and updated itself to 1.4.1. Before receiving the new sd cards, I reformatted the possibly defective sd card and recreated dual boot system using Verygreen's instructions (in the 1.3 unit but transferred into the 1.2 unit after creation). I was able to restore some of the apps using Titanium (but only because I had copied some of my original backups to my pc)
The unit with 1.3 on it had not been used much with wifi, and it still had/has 1.3 on it. One of the new cards is now in that NC (created as before with the Verygreen instructions).
I'm in a quandary what to do with the other unit.
Could using the 1.3-created sd dual boot card in the 1.2 Nook have caused partitions to become corrupted?
Where are applications going? Doesn't look like they're in the large sd card partition. I didn't think I had that much on there, (just some free apps from google and amazon) but I might I have run out of space? I never elected "move to sd card" or "clear cache" for any apps and don't know if that is a requirement when you use dual booting.
I haven't found instructions for what to do to create a dual boot card for 1.4.1. My original 8 gb card is in the unit, but I'd like to create a new boot card using the higher quality medium. Just want to understand what's happening. Is use of a 1.3-based card bound to lead to more corrupted partitions? Any suggestions on how to create a reliable dual boot card for this unit?

Can't tell you what issues you may be having with the sd card, but verygreen's "dual boot" (it's not really dual boot, but that's another story) method is independent of the stock rom (1.2, 1.3, 1.4, whatever). When you boot to the sd card, everything needed is on the card. When you boot to the Nook, either by using the sd card menu or removing the card, you get whatever stock ROM is currently installed in the emmc. If you properly created the sd card, you can insert it in any NC and use it.
I read through all and by the end, I'm lost
Anyway, if you are dealing with verygreen's uSD cards, you should be all set and not to worry anything on the eMMC. It's independent.
As why those partitions corrupted, I don't know as I never hit that problem. Just curious, why do you say it corrupts?

Oh well, if no one else has had the issue of sd card corruption hopefully its not a side effect of using verygreen's image together with cm7 7.1.0, google apps and user apps.

The behavior was a little different each time. Has happened 3 times now.
Once it totally locked up. Powered off and back on. Got my home screen with icons but in the notification area an image of the sd card persisted for maybe 5 minutes while the unit was otherwise locked up. Finally the sd card image cleared, but es file explorer empty sdcard. When tested on the PC, that partition's data was corrupted. Recovery (using pc software) retrieved a bunch of files but without their proper names. That time my apps were not destroyed. I didn't have to redo verygreen's procedure, just reformatted CM7 SDCARD partition.
Another time I had powered off. Restarted and it booted in Nook instead of CM7. Removed the card and tested on the PC and both the boot and CM7 SDCARD partitions were unreadable. Didn't attempt any recovery. Wiped out and reformatted the card, then redid the verygreen procedure on it.
The third time (last night ) was more similar to the first time. I got some forced closes and couldn't get back the status bar. Rebooted. Got the sdcard icon showing for about 5 minutes. When it cleared, my files were inaccessible. Removed the card and tested on the PC. CM7 SCDARD partition content was corrupted.
The (bad?) sd card didn't give any errors when tested prior to the break downs. Its labeled as a sandisk 8gb class 2. Was a gift.
I'm back up and running after redoing the verygreen procedure using one of the new sandisk 8gb class 4 cards. This time I actually used my unit instead of another to do the unpacking/recovery loading of cm7 and google apps. I've never applied any of the nightlies. Maybe I should look into that. Also have never deliberately done any other procedures, such as overclock it.
Praying the corruption issue doesn't hit me again. I guess my NC's internal flash drive could possibly be defective. If so, at least its still under warranty.
>>> UPDATE: Issue Resolved <<<
I have been working at this for a while and can't figure out why it's not booting. Here's what I am doing:
1) Write the image (generic-sdcard-v1.3-ICS-large.img) to your SD card using WinImage (Windows 7).
SanDisk microSDHC 8GB class4
WinImage error message:
the current image format is not supported by the disk drive E:
it will be resized
disck is not empty, all data on your disk will be lost
do you want to continue?
2) eject and then re-insert the uSD card into computer.
3) Copy the nightly file (update-encore-20120220.zip) to SD card
4) unmount the uSD card and insert it into the nook.
5) press power button (or N button), boots to Nook-OS
trying to follow these instructions...

I'm not totally sure about the way you are going about it. I did that method once about 9 months ago, and just can't remember the details. However, I would recommend trying racks triple boot sd card method. It burns CM7 and CM9 (ICS) onto the SD card, and leaves EMMC alone. It was pretty simple, and you'll have the ability to choose which to boot into. The CM7 is super stable, and will work as your daily driver. The CM9 has a few things that still need to be worked out, but I've actually been using it more than the CM7. Here's the link to that method;

I'd use Win32DiskImager for step 1. Plus use a real USB SD card adapter. If you are using an SD card slot built into the computer that is likely to be why you are not getting a bootable card.
I was having the same issue and using win32diskimager did it for me. Thanks!
SD card format required
This memory card is unrecognized and needs to be formatted. [Cancel] [Format Now]
it sure looks like you have been skipping the same step from your two posts. If you're asking, yeah, go ahead and format the disk before burning the image. You will lose whatever is on the disk, that is what the error is saying.
It is a warning and is double checking before it continues. Not really an error, per se.
Thanks crapid, I will try that next.
Thanks bobtidey, I have ordered a Transcend TS-RDP5K USB 2.0 Card Reader and see if that helps next time. But I think Win32DiskImager did the trick. I loaded Win32DiskImager and it wrote to the microSD card. I booted the Nook and it loaded (second time) and installed ICS!
BTW: I think noobs need a Sticky Thread on How To Boot the Nook Color.
And apparently there are restrictions on noobs posting into their own threads. Which is why my last post was incomplete, sorry.
Thanks for all the help.

Good to hear your progressing. The advice about using a real USB card reader is because some SD card media slots built into computers seem to have issues creating bootable cards. Some work, some don't. Also applies to writing the SD image via a phone/tablet connected by USB to the computer. Some models will work, others cause problems. Of all the methods vanilla USB readers seem to be problem free in this area.
After attemptindg to make a bootable sd card with CM7 and failed probably due to my inexperience I tried to reformat the card and start over again. Now my computer will sometimes recognise the card and other times not. The real problem is that the nook will not not mount the card and formatting on the nook fails every time. I have tried numerous sd cards and none will not format on the nook. As a last resort I have done the 8x's reset and now am back to the begining but it willstill not format the sd card. Any help as where to start would be greatly apperciated

You need to format the card on your PC with SDFormatter (free on the web). It formats it properly so the nook can read it and erase it if you want.

nook color will not mount sd card
Thanks-- I have downloaded the sdformat program and formatted the sd card as you indicated. When I put the card in the nook it asked to format the card. At that point I ejected the card and followed your instructions in the signature of your message. At this point I put the card
into the nook and powered it up. The nook then booted into the Barnes and Noble software. It looks as if the nook is not seeing the sd card.
any suggestions?

Just tried again. (formatting.. burning image and the cm7.2 zip file to the sd card and the nook will not boot at all with the sd card inserted.
Take out the card and it boots to the stock software.. May be a new card is needed???

You are sending me mixed issues. You said you tried to make bootable SD. It failed. Then you could not get the nook to recognize card or the PC to reliably recognize it. What I told you to do was for getting the card back as readable on the PC and nook.
Now you are trying to make it bootable again? That is a different issue. Look in my nook color tips thread at item A9 to see some issues with making a bootable SD.
And you are sure this is a Nook Color, not a Nook Tablet?

Thanks for the reply, as i said earlier I did reformat the card as per you suggestion to no avail. The PC was able to recognise the card and the nook color was not. At that point I tried to make the card bootable again hoping that the Nook would see it with the image on it. Now the nook color will not boot up at all with the card inserted but will boot normallly to stock without the sd card inserted. Sorry for any confusion. I will try and reformat the card again an and let you know wha happens. This time I will go no furthur till I hear from you folks.
Again thanks for all you do!! Steve

What you did not say in your earlier post was whether after formatting the SD and inserting in the NC and it asking if you wanted to format, was did you try to let the NC format it and was it successful? You just said you immediately removed it and followed some instructions from my signature. I have a lot of instructions there so I don't know what you did.

The sd card formatted sucessfully. at that point I inserted it into the nook and booted it up. The nook indicated that the card was inserted. Then it asked to format the sd card. When I did so the reply was formatting failed. Tried several attempts. The computer had no problem seeing the
card so i put the image on the card along with the CM encore zip file and tried it in the nook. The nook would not boot with the card inserted,
so now at this point I have formatted the card again sucsessfully using the sd formatter program. Not sure where to go from here.

May be card reader and may be your slot in the nook.
Yes there is an alternate way using ADB, but it is not simple.
You have to connect with ADB, mount the boot partition and push the RecImg and RecRam files from the burned card to the boot partition. But you have to use my bootable CWM SD to get the files. Most other CWM cards don't have them. Those two files replace the stock versions and then you can boot to CWM by holding the n key while booting. Then you can choose files to flash from internal memory.
