On my Galaxy S4 I can only record in 1920x1080, 1440x1080, 1280x720 and 320x240.
Well when I want to record a small video and I send it via whatsapp, 1280x720 is to big and 320x240 is to small and ugly.
Thats why I want to get the 640x480 resolution but there simply isn't an option for that.
Is it possible to change something in the camera settings (rooted directories) to get that resolution?
Thanks
+1
I want to change the resolution too without downloading a different app..
Simply if settings in camera app don't provide that resolution, nothing can be done....
Try a 3rd party camera app...

Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) the stock TW Samsung camera is the best (or among the best) in all smartphones.
Try Camera jb+ from Google play... It has free and paid versions..
name of the nexus app?

What the name of this app? I'm having the same problem.

Does anyone have an idea why the default Gallery app doesn't show full-resolution images, but rather a crappy down-sized and heavily compressed images instead?
I've tried some other gallery apps, but I really like the look and transitions on the default app - everything is good, except the resolution :/
Also, if you have any other good gallery apps to try out, I'm all ears. My problem is that I need to carry with me a very large amount of photos (several thousand). I've downsized them to fit into 1200x1200 resolution box, but when viewed through the default app, they suck immensely.
I believe that is Android's fault. The stock android gallery downsizes all pics. If there was a similar gallery app (transitions and look) but with full-size pics I'd be interested too!!!
Same problem here. Though it's still far from perfect, the best viewer I've seen so far is JustPictures!, which can handle hires images quite correctly.
I have the same problem and as I am a photographer and use the Tab as my portofilo I have found on the market for free the app Large Image Viewer.
That will display the images as I want it to see.

Indeed. Stock Android apps suck at any decent media viewing or editing. Its also why every photo editing app downsizes your edits to a pitiful 1024 resolution. Its an OS limitation I believe.
Um, Google. What the hell is the point then in better cameras & higher resolutions if you're crappy OS can't handle editing them??
Someone buy Google a clue.

I had to root first to remove the old gallery before installing the modded gallery.

Yeah, same here - a photographer After that I've uploaded most of my archive in a resized, but still high-res mode, and saw that horror on the screen... Bah! I'll check out that app, thanks!
Photog here too... the modded gallery looks like a nice option, but I've been using the app called just pictures from the market(as mentioned by obi4d above)... it allows you to specify the maximum res for zoom viewing (up to original size), and for the most part it is very smooth and clean... a hiccup every now and then with 18mp 300dpi jpegs, but it's free and doesn't require root... it also can connect to several photo sites (flickr, picasa, smugmug, even facebook etc...) to remotely display your galleries much faster than the browser...

I use Number22's Gallery3D app, which fixes the sensor battery bug and provides full resolution picture views. I also use JustPictures from time to time.
What about EXIF data. I know 'JustPictures' displays EXIF but what about 'Large Image Viewer', does it too show EXIF material?
If so which is considered to show the greater additional material?

DAMN..... That is so important to me.
Looks like I'll have to install JustPictures! for EXIF data.
Can someone post an example image so we can test various gallery apks?
I have installed the molded gallery from the SGS Toolbox but my images look fine (as did they before this).
I fail to see the problem.

But really, who wants ****ty digital zoom anyway. If you wanted a nice camera on your phone, you should have bought a Nokia NSeries or something man. TO OP: Don't let that be a deal-breaker for you... I'm sure there will be custom ROMs around in given time that supports zoom and 720p video recording. Hope this helps.
Digital zoom on a fixed lens = crappy pixelated pics

I have the Galaxy S and just upgraded to CM7 nightly's which gives me a similar cam to the Nexus S. I've confirmed with a friend, and there's no zoom on his Nexus S.
I was surprised to find out, that there is no Zoom on the camera any more, as the Galaxy S (stock samsung) camera application supported zoom via the Volume Buttons.
For those saying "oh it's just digital and not optical zoom" is irrelevant. It allows me to take my crappy pixelated photo with out having to crop later before sending. The quality on the camera is sh!t anyways.
I'd personally like optical zoom and it seems like a standard reasonable feature these days.

You have to understand that the Nexus S is meant to be a developer phone so it lacks certain features that can be later added by the developers in the XDA forums.

Developer phone or not it still cost the same as the galaxy s yet they didn't add alot of stuff shouldn't the phone be cheaper guess not more I think about this its just dumb Google is really droppin the ball. No tv-out no 720p recording no sdcard no zoom no codecs only thing that's better is the form factor and updates from Google I guess but that's the price I pay for lord Google to give updates rant off I guess

I would like to use my Xoom to load my photography portfolio on to show prospective clients. Does anyone know the best resolution to load photos at? I loaded them at 1280x800 and 300 ppi, but they look very pixelated. Has anyone had better luck with other resolutions? Am I missing something?

The default Gallery seems to pixelate pictures. Use QuickPic (Market Link: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.alensw.PicFolder&feature=search_result) instead and you will see your pictures in all their glory, regardless of size. The one downfall is it does not sync with Picasa like the default Gallery does.
Nice... I like the additional options available.
I second the recommendation to use QuickPic for hi-res photos. Works great for HDMI-out to full screen LCD too. Hopefully they'll update it for better transitions...
That did it! Thanks!

Hey folks!
The recently published new camera app from Google has some nice features. Unfortunately, as many other camera apps for the G2, this camera app lacks in picture quality in comparison to the G2 stock camera and its derivatives...
I'm not a developer but I thought that maybe it would be possible to modify the GoogleCamere to shoot better pictures using our beloved G2...
What do you think?

Because,
1. most of them are only updated for stock roms and
2. the don't have those nice new functions like focus control, that the new GoogleCamera offers...
The camera mods change more than just the camera app.
I find the Google camera just as good as far as basic photo quality.
Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk
Most of the optimisations in the camera of OEM phones is in the app, but many are in the Kernel. Without both you will never get the same level of quality.
Porting them over is just not possible since its not just about settings, but also drivers and often you will not get the benefit of the drivers without the OEM app.

Are you able to assign the "shake to start" gesture to opening a new camera app?
You can if your phone is rooted and Xposed is installed. There is a module called twisty switch that allows you to launch other apps with the wrist twist, instead of the stock camera app.
