Emojis in 4.3 - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I just updated to 4.3. I've found the updated camera app, the autodialer feature, but the new Emoji keyboard/feature is nowhere to be found. Anyone else having this issue--can anyone using a Nexus 4 with build JWR66V confirm they have an Emoji keyboard? I've found "Emoji for English words" in the Addon Dictionary section but it doesn't bring up any interface with spacebar. I hold down the spacebar after installing the emoji addon dictionary and all i get is "choose input method" with no emoji keyboard on it.

No because if you searched a little more you'd know you have to go to keyboard/input and enable emoji keyboard...

I've been in "Language and input" and there are three keyboards available-- Google Keyboard, Google voice typing, and my Switfkey app. Thats it.

I don't have 4.3 yet, but I assume all you do is settings on default keyboard and install emoji add on dictionary. And then just holding down space bar will bring it up.

You have to go to
Settings --> Language & Input --> than enable iWnn IME keyboard. Under Google Keyboard settings go to 'Advanced Settings' than enable 'Switch to other input methods'. Than all yyou need to do is hit the Earth icon on the keyboard to switch to the emoji keyboard.

I had originally disabled the iWnn IME keyboard. Once I re-enabled it, I discovered the keyboard. Sneaky of google to add it there. Anyway, thank you, problem solved.

select input method in jellybean?

stupid question,
In previous versions of android, I could long press a text field to bring up the "select input method" box to quickly switch between keyboards installed on the device without having to leave the app I was in.
I don't seem able to do that in JellyBean?
I have Swiftkey 3 Tablet installed if that makes any difference.
Am I missing something obvious?
bring up the kb and long press space on stock kb
thanks, that's great,
but what I really want to do is switch from Swiftkey 3 Tablet to another input method like the handwriting input that comes with "7notes".
the more input methods you select in 'settings>language and input' the more options should appear to switch between. Or, is that not appearing using swiftkey?
long pressing space in swiftkey doesnt seem to do anything.
I have ticked boxes next to "swiftkey", "google voice typing" and "7notes mazec" in language and input settings.
The only way i have found to use the mazec one is to set it as default input method, but then I have to go back into settings
after I have used it to set swiftkey back as default.
When tap on text entry box a little keyboard icon should appear in notification bar. Swipe down and you should see option to change input method

Gesture Typing Not Working

After updating to 4.2 I went to check out the new gesture typing feature.
Unfortunately, when I went to a text box to try it out, nothing happened.
I've checked to make sure that it is enabled in the settings. I've also cleared the keyboard data & cache.
Anyone else have this problem?
bump
Just realised, if I create another user account on the tablet. Gesture typing works on that account.
However, I still cant get it to work on the main 'owner' account.
Has no-one else had this problem when they updated?

Okay, I am going to start from the beginning, if you have done any of this already, sorry for repeating it.
First, you need to have the setting enabled so go to Settings - Language & Input - Android keyboard settings icon.
Under there under Gesture typing, check enable gesture typing.
In whatever program you want to use gesture typing, bring up the keyboard like normal, go to the notification window.
Select choose input method and switch it to android keyboard (if it isn't already default).
It should switch keyboards (again if android keyboard wasn't already default), now you can have fun playing with the new keyboard.
I think it only works if your language is US English. Might be wrong though.

it's working for me, italian system language
In the keyboard setting add the correct additional dictionary for your language. In my case the Swedish and it works.

Might be a stupid question, but where do you find the Swedish add-on dictionary? The only Nordic dictionary I've got access to, is the Norwegian and I need the Danish.
Edit: Never mind, it appeared after a refresh of the list.
Just found a solution.
If you change the language, and then change it back, it works.
Hope this helps anyone else with the same problem.

I got this problem, on English gesture typing works, but on Dutch (my native language) it doesnt work.. all settings enabled, tried to diable English, than still no gesture on Dutch..
Any ideas?
Sv: Gesture Typing Not Working
At first only US English works, but all languages on a second account, but after a while it works for other languages.
Maybe it needs some kind of dictionary first, to work.
Otherwise try Kii Keyboard, it has gesture input and is really customizable. (Looks like stock)

Toro here, an updated flash of gapps did the trick after all else failed for me. Apparently, the added feature of the gesture typing belongs to Google. Not sure if this helps, I lost the gesture after I flashed to 4.3.

In deed! I think it's belong to Google! I updated to 4.3 and Gesture Typing is not working...
me too! I just updated to CM10.2 and gesture typing doesn't work even if I change ENG/ITA languages...
gesture typing in some language not working
First of all you need the google keyboard. In my case I had english as the main language of the os, but wanted to use dutch, german and french as well. I found that Dutch didn't have gesture typing.
If you have that and you find your language is not gesture enabled and you're sure you've set it correctly (see previous posts). Change the system language to the language you need and wait a bit (you should have an internet connection). Some additional stuff will be downloaded. Then try if gesture typing in that language is working. If so, problem solved! set system back to original language and gesture typing should still work in the other language.
I had this same issue after flashing a custom Lollipop ROM onto my device and couldn't get gesture typing to work no matter what I tried, until I found a solution that worked for me:
My ROM came with a keyboard called "Android Keyboard (AOSP)" which looks exactly like the Google keyboard and has all the same settings for gesture typing etc. except that gesture typing didn't work. When I installed the actual "Google Keyboard" app from Google Play and set that as my default keyboard, gesture typing started working!
So if you can't get it to work, make sure you have the real Google Keyboard app from Google Play installed, there seems to be a difference between that and the one that ships with the ROM.
almost the same problem here!
Hi, a few days ago I´ve revert from CM12 to CM11, I formated /system /data /everything! And gesture typing not worked anymore (before upgrading to CM12 it was working on CM11 M12). No matter what language I select gesture typing does not work.
Then get back to Stock, full stock! Then I rooted, blah blah, and installed CM again. And NOTHING!
Any idea?

Thanks a lot! You solved it for me! In my case I installed a Cyanogenmod ROM plus a Google Apps package from opengapps.org which is called "Pico - The bare minimum to get Google Play functionality.". Apparently the gesture "Google Keyboard" was not part of this package and thanks to you I just installed it and it works now.

[Q] keyboard icon

How do I stop the keyboard icon in the top left of the notification bar? I was using the stock keyboard and I could uncheck the Google voice typing, but it kept coming back. I changed to swipe, but now I can't uncheck the stock keyboard or disable it.
Any thoughts?
I get this alert from time to time to so i wonder about this too??
This is an Android 'feature' you can't turn off. The keyboard icon comes up whenever a keyboard is on the screen. You can't hide the icon. It's the same with any Android phone. I think it disappears if you use stock keyboard but I might be wrong.
Yes it's a stock android thing, but other phones you can disable the other keyboards so it doesn't pop up. I was hoping there was a way to do the same on this phone.

The reason you could not complete uncheck the Google Voice in Setting/Language and Input because your LG keyboard using it as an add on. I had try to turn the Google Voice off but it will come back agian
To disable the icon keyboard icon in the top left of the notification bar you should go to Setting/Language and Input then
1. Uncheck the Google Voice in Setting/Language and Input
2. hit the LG keyboard setting (it was a gear icon in the end of the LG keyboard row) then uncheck Voice input.

[Q] google voice typing not working and no mic on any keyboard

Can't figure this one out. Using the LG keyboard, I do not have a mic icon no matter what I try (it is enabled in settings). Selecting Google Voice typing doesn't even open. Using the stock google keyboard from the play store doesn't allow me to select the mic icon either from the ',' key. I have checked the installed voice engines (LG, Pico) and installed the google voice engine but nothing works. Anyone else having problems with this function?

Yes exact same issue- in settings under Lang and Input & LG Keyboard, voice input is auto selected but grayed out. Google search bar widget shows mic icon in preview view, but when I add it to the home screen the mic icon is gone and nothing happens when you click on the bar. Phone's mic is working normally. Gettin worried....
Same problem!
24A IOroot TWRP 2.7 Malladus 2.0.2.
To text, I have to tap a LOT of buttons.
1 tap on text icon.
Then tap the + icon to compose new message.
Then tap the status bar button to drop down status bar.
Then tap choose input method.
Then choose either "Google voice typing" or "LG Keyboard".
Then choose contact.
Then text.
There is no microphone icon on the LG keyboard for texting.
I'm a noob. This is the clunkiest text interface I could imagine.
What am I missing? Is there a text app I need to download to get a better interface with the ROM?
Thanks for any help!!
I can drop-down the status bar and touch allows me to select between Google mic or LG keyboard,

BTW - my google voice typing does work when I select it as described above.
I enabled it under Settings / Language and Input.
Try uninstalling Google voice search and then reinstalling it. This worked for me.

Do you have a settings cog to the left of your space bar? If so long press that and you are presented with options including the microphone. Once you click on the microphone the popup window goes away and the settings cog is replaced with a microphone. This worked for me when I had the LG Keyboard. I'm currently using the AOSP keyboard which has the microphone by default.

Thanks!
Worked like a charm!
My button left of the keyboard had the pencil. On longpress, it gives the option of pencil, mic, settings, or a note thingy.
I had it in my head that my problem was some kind of buggy thing associated with removing bloat and stuff.
In fact, it was nothing more than "please try to learn how to use your own phone".
So I kinda feel dumb....
But on the positive side, you look brilliant!
Thanks!

I had the exact same problem, and after hours of searching, found that somehow Google Search was disabled. Go to settings/applications and slide all the way to the right under "disabled" and click on Google Search, and then re-enable it.
Next, go to General Settings/Language & Input and make sure there is a check next to Google Voice Typing. Problem should be solved.

Exactly the same thing happened to me once but i figured the problem!
Follow these steps to fix the problem
1. Open settings, in the general column click on language and input.
2. Go to Google voice typing and enable it.
3. Click on the gear next to Google voice typing.
4. Change the language to only English US.
5. AND THAT'S IT....IT WORKED FOR ME.....ENJOY VOICE TYPING!!!

[Q] greek keyboard change

I have both Greek and English selected on my Note 3 but I can't switch between the two at all. Swiping the spacebar does nothing and there's no globe button. The only way I can use the Greek keyboard is if Greek is the only input language selected. Then to switch back to English, I'll have to uncheck Greek and check English again. If both are selected, only English is shown on my keyboard..... I can't find a way to switch between them. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

What firmware are you on? Are you rooted?
Here is how the Samsung keyboard looks for me inside the Samsung SMS app on firmware MJ7 (4.3) + the hack to enable extended symbols. In the Samsung keyboard there seems to no longer be an option to switch languages when you swipe over space (and I also use swiping as input method) but you can see a small button in the bottom-left (just to the right of the SYM key) and when you short-press on that I switch languages. The "swipe over space" option is still present in other keyboards and might be even a hidden option for the Samsung keyboard (but you might need root).

The only other idea that I have is to long-press on space. And eventually on the button that is two places left from space - after a long-press you might get to see a list and the button like a globe is the one that switches between languages.
Also check what other version you have on English and Greek after the > sign in settings - that part is not present in my firmware so extra settings might be there.
Also the language availability might depend on the app itself - so also do a test in the Samsung default SMS app.
