[Q] Soft Bricked my S4 - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Hello,
I've been reading as much regarding this issue before I've posted this thread. Please don't attack me because of my lack of knowledge, I'm trying. Thanks.
I recently rooted and installed a custom rom on my SGH-I337, Slimrom was the name of the rom. It worked perfectly, until I decided to upgrade the rom version. I downloaded the update on my phone, rebooted to recovery and flashed the zip. Rebooted my phone, and I'm stuck in a boot loop. No Logo, No recovery, I do have download mode.
I had read that odin flashing the stock rom would fix my issue, so I had done that. I flashed I337UCUAMDL_I337ATTAMDL_ATT successfully. Odin auto-rebooted....to a boot loop. No recovery, No image on my screen while charging, etc.
I had also read that odin flashing TWRP might fix the soft brick I'm experiencing, I downloaded the latest .img from TWRP and converted it to a tar using Cygwin. Attempted to flash it to have Odin tell me it failed.
Does anyone have any idea's or advice how I could get back to a working environment recovery?
Thank you for your time reading this.

when you flashed the rom update, did you do any sort of wipe as well?
when you flash the stock firmware via odin, you have to boot into the stock recovery afterwards and wipe data/factory reset to complete the process or you will be unable to continue. you may want to try that process again.

Thank you for the speedy response.
When I originally flashed the rom update, I did NOT wipe anything.
When I flashed stock firmware, I could not get into stock recovery via three buttons.
Thank you.

Thank you for the advice, I have done that countless times. I'm hoping that it changes one of these times though.
I took your advice regarding re-flashing the image and ticking the bootloader update option, odin stated it was successful and auto-rebooted. I pulled the battery and tried to enter recovery, no cigar.

Perhaps try the Heimdall route: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2374441

When attempting to flash TWRP recovery, my phone says in the top right hand corner:
Odin Mode
Product name: SGH-I337
Current Binary: Samsung Official
System Status: Custom
CSB-OEM_CONFIG_LSB: 0x30
WRITE PROTECTION: Enabled
START [224, 1440]
SECURE CHECK FAIL: recovery
Don't know what that means.
I haven't tried the heimdall method yet, not sure if I wanna give it a shot because it seems a lot more complex only to accomplish the same thing odin would. I can imagine something is stopping odin from putting a bootloader, or kernel. That same thing would stop heimdall. But, I have no idea what I'm talking about. Waiting to hear more advice before I make the hole I dug deeper.
Thank you for your time guys.

Try flashing the loki patched recovery from this thread. Link is in OP.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2322682
Just extract the img and make it a odin file.

After flashing stock via Odin, when you use the 3 button combo to access recovery, are you releasing just the power button when the device vibrates?

Thank you for the advice Febby, I have downloaded the file you suggested. This was actually the first recovery I had when I had tried to update my rom version. I converted it successfully to a tar and attempted to odin it over to my phone. I'm receiving the same error I had earlier, Secure Check Fail: Recovery.
Thank you for the suggestion though, as I think this is in the right direction of what I need to do, I don't know how to get past that secure check though.

Correct, I am.
I am receiving absolutely no image on my screen other than when I enter Download mode.
Thank you for the suggestion.

damn im sorry it didn't work. Samsung is just making this device more and more unpleasant to own. I actually considered switching to a ONE today.
You can always try exchanging it via att warranty (free).
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk 2

Indeed the "easiest" way to correct this would be via a warranty claim... but would take a couple days.
Otherwise, when you said "updated the ROM" ... How did you go about updating it? I assume you downloaded a .zip from the forums here, and installed it through recovery. But if you somehow, by some miracle, managed to download the MF3 update OTA... that would explain many things.
Also, there's an MDL recovery located over in this post. It's odin-flashable, and works on my device pretty well. Maybe it will get you back to at least having a recovery?
Also, Odin will reject the installation of TWRP like that. Tried it myself once.

No no, no need to apologize, I have been looking in the ONE as well haha, but I'm already looped into two years, so its probably not going to happen. I have a tiny cracked screen so they won't allow me to exchange it. =( Thank you for your ideas though!

Correct, I did update my rom via a zip file, I'm pretty sure it wasn't a MF3 update as I am familiar with the problems that's been causing.

I'll give that a shot with your link and let you know.
Thanks again guys.
EDIT: Tried the MDL Recovery, No Cigar. Though that thread is pretty interesting, gonna give it a read when I have the time. I need to get out of the house, this problem is driving me bonkers. Thank you guys very much for your advice and support, I would have went crazy hours ago if it wasn't for the intelligence provided by this forum.

Hey, don't despair! Last time I was here I used Odin to reflash my stock firmware, and also the stock kernel. Did you try reflashing the stock kernel yet? That got me right out of it.
Strange that you can't get into any sort of recovery menu.

Does kinda sound like a kernel problem, I think... Might try just flashing to Kernel to see if it gets any further. You could do that via Heimdall (if you have it setup), or by modifying a copy of the MDL Odin package (e.g. delete everythine but the "boot.img" kernel file, and remove the .md5 extension).
I hope your break is refreshing.

that would be the worst mistake of your life. my wife has a One. stock, its like an iphone. rooted, there isnt 10% of the activity/development in the One boards that there are here so that makes life with a rooted htc device even more boring than a regular day with an htc device.

What I did is just google around for my stock kernel, which came in a .TAR file, and was immediately Odin-flashable. That might be even easier.

I just reflashed the stock kernel, no cigar =( It is very strange to me that I can't get the phone to respond to anything other than download mode. Especially considering that I odin'd to stock. I'm starting to think I made it worse by going back to stock after flashing slimbean's weekly update.
Thank you for your time guys, keep the ideas coming, I'm definitely trying to come up with my own ideas.
I have so far done the following:
Odin'd MDL, MDB, Stock Kernel, Stock Recovery (All through download mode, as I don't have access to recovery.)
I've also tried to odin TWRP but I fail in Odin since download mode blocks the illegal recovery.
Thank you again for your time.

Im not so sure how everyone just over looked this but the rom in that link is for the att S3. So you flashed an S3 rom to your S4.
D2att is the s3 for att.
Jflteatt is the att variant.
http://www.slimroms.net/index.php/downloads/all/viewcategory/620-jflteatt
Thats the correct link to weekly roms for slim rom for our device. your partitions might just be corrupted in case maybe having a jtag or using the pit file for MDL would fix? :/ im not an expert haha just observations.

You sure? On the att one majority of devs dont post on the att htc one section but eather "HtC one" section since all roms work vice versa on that phone international roms > works on all models of the one.

Go to sammobile.com. you can find stock firmware there. You have to register but it's free. You'll download a zip file, use 7-zip to extract the .tar.md5 file from it. Use that in Odin.

Use mdl. Odin is a separate program and is not us or Canada. Read this guide and use the tar.md5 for your device http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=26056924
Take your time and read the guide more than once. You can permanently brick your device.

When you use Odin, let it do its thing. It'll take 10 to 20 minutes. Don't panic in the middle and unplug the usb. Be patient. And make sure you use the file you're downloading from sammobile. Don't use any of the links in the guide, except Odin. The other files are not for your device and they will brick you.

Did you have "repartition" checked in ODIN? Because if you did, you shouldn't have.
If not, try to get into recovery (if you can) and try a factory reset.

Also... all i had checked was auto reboot and f. reset time. I flashed the reset file with pda box checked.
forgot to add. i flashed the file with those two boxes checked and it said pass. I think it must be the kernel or the recovery? how do you flash these in odin? I bet if i can track down the stock kernel and get twrp again it may boot.

If you are positive you can not get into 3e recovery, you might want to go to the OUDHS CWM thread in the development section and look at the OP for a method to install that recovery via ADB shell. If you can get it installed, you can then flash another ROM to get up and running. Then, if you desire, you can use GooManager to put TWRP back on your phone and restore a working Nandroid you might have. Or you can just set things up from scratch. But all of this is only if you can get into recovery or get a recovery installed back onto your phone.
If you tried to install the wrong Kernel for your phone, you might be hard bricked, in which case Jtag might be your only hope.

I hope you get it figured out. But let me tell you what I DID and had the same outcome with NO RECOVERY at all, black screen with vibrate only. So what your describing sounds EXACTLY what happened to mine.
So I was "TRYING" to make a custom splash screen as I had for my SGS3. (Which messed with the kernel). When I went to boot up after the flash it did the black screen with vibrate.
I COULD get into DOWNOIAD mode but not recovery at all. I tried for a few days. I was worried my battery would be getting low after trying for a few hours. I tried to plug it in and the battery came up but it acted like it was stuck and nothing would happen.
Next I tried to use Odin to flash back to MDL stock firmware. It would flash and said completed. But upon reboot same half/vibrate screen.
Next I tried MDB firmware. STILL a NO GO. I had to send it in for JTAG. I think they had some issues getting it working as well. It arrived on a Thursday, and they did not finish getting it to where their site showed it was completed for 8 days. Then it didn't get sent out for another day. It finally arrived at my house 10 days after they received it. But GLADLY they were able to fix it. So good luck to you. If you do have to resort to JTAG it cost me a total of $90, Almost $30 dollars for me to TWO DAY it to them. $60 for JTAG and rush delivery.

Sorry to hear Odin didn't work. Odin does put the stock recovery on your phone in the correct partition if every thing goes correctly. But if your hard bricked Odin won't recovery the phone.
Try what Scott suggested but it's looking like jtag may be your best option at this point.

hell yeah this phone is hard bricked. But att was cool and let me return for a new one. Really no questions asked as long as you didnt damage it or get it wet. Rip to my first gs4. Successful restoration of stock MF3 Recovery!

Hey everyone.
So I jumped the gun and tried to install a custom recovery on my GS4 with MF3. Big mistake, I know. Lucky for me the phone still booted, just recovery was shot. I tried all night to find a solution and all I could find was people referring people like me to Best Buy to maybe get the phone reflashed.
Well, I just fixed it. My wife has a GS4 with MF3 as well. I downloaded an app called "[ROOT] Recovery Tools - Flasher" from the Play Store. Both phones were rooted. I used the tool to "backup" the stock recovery from her phone, I then copied that file from her phone directly to mine. I used "Flash Other Recovery" and selected the backup file from her phone. SUCCESS. Stock recovery was now back.
If you cannot boot and can only get into the "Downloading" screen, then perhaps the backup image from Recovery Tool (An IMG file) can be pushed using Odin? I have no idea. I'm no dev, but I'm very happy to not have a broken recovery anymore.
I was lazy and just used the first file host that popped into Google, but if this works for you then please mirror for others!
Remove the hyphens and copy/paste (I can't include external links, as this is my first actual post)
h-t-t-p://w-w-w-.filedropper.c-o-m/331
Hopefully this is new and I'm not just repeating something everyone already knew, but I had no luck finding a fix for a corrupt MF3.
Good Luck guys, and I take no responsibility if you damage your phone somehow.
EDIT: Apprently a method already existed, although this method doesn't wipe your data!
You could have just used ODIN to flash MF3. You might lose your personal data, but you will have a clean install with recovery. Maybe the method you used might help others that don't want to lose their set-up (personal data and apps) and just need to get the stock recovery back. Thanks for posting about your experience.

Nice! Somehow I missed all of this. In any case I was successful in solving it myself. Hopefully the information will be of some use to someone, even if it's just in not having to wipe their phone. Thanks for the information! I guess having multiple options is at least handy. If I hadn't already figured out a solution you'd have been a life saver though, really. I mean the phone worked fine, but having a broken recovery is just... disconcerting... Lol

You could have just used ODIN to flash MF3. You might lose your personal data, but you will have a clean install with recovery. Maybe the method you used might help others that don't want to lose their set-up (personal data and apps) and just need to get the stock recovery back. Thanks for posting about your experience.

[Q] Tried to flash MF3 on MK2, now Bricked

For the second time today I've gone and done something stupid...
I had MF3 this morning, but the device updated OTA to MK2. I tried to flash via odin the MF3 firmware later in the day, and wham... bricked.
Is the MK2 firmware out there somewhere? Does anyone have any suggestions? If I can ever get this straightened out I need to read a lot more so I don't continue to make stupid errors.

I'm replying to myself at this point, but if anyone stumbles on this thread and was as silly as I was, I managed to get the phone working again by using the image posted on this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2118100
Sadly, the recovery is still messed up - but the phone itself boots and is rooted and that's good enough for me for one day. Time for me to stop being a monkey with flashing and be happy with a working phone for at least 24 hours.

I'm stuck in the same place as you. I was stuck in that odin mode, so I used odin to flash MF3 when I had the 4.3 MK2. That of course failed and I tried to recover on Kies and that didn't work. What'd you do to get it working?

If you go over to the thread in my last post and grab that recovery.img file, you can use heimdall to flash it. I expected this to restore the stock recovery and let me do a reset, but it didn't. What it did so is make the phone work exactly as it did right before it was stuck in odin mode. I'm not sure why that is... someone more intelligent than me probably knows. Like I said before, my recovery still isn't working however. At the moment, I'm going to be happy with a working phone until someone either
a) posts the MK2 files to flash with odin... then I can just start over
b) or someone figures out how to unlock the bootloader...

Thanks, I found that thread after I had already gotten the phone working (no recovery), and I was a little afraid to mess around with it any more. But with your words of encouragement I went ahead and did it anyway. Now I have a working phone and working recovery rooted on 4.3 MK2.

remove battery, boot into odin mode, flash mje and you'll be okay.
I did that I flashed in to odin and tried to return to stock but the custom screen still remains almost like im hung up in root mode
After flashing back to stock, reboot to recovery and wipe data/factory reset

I don't know if this is the place to ask this and I apologize if it isn't. I am needing MAJOR help. My phone won't boot into recovery it will boot into odin and The Samsung Note 3 Screen that says Custom and has a lock. I don't know what to do and I am so stressed out. I shouldn't have messed with something i wasn't sure of

If it will boot into Download (Odin) mode, then it will almost certainly be able to be flashed back to pure stock using Odin. Just make sure to use the Odin file which is equal to (or greater) the release that was on the phone. For instance, if you were on MJ7, then you could use either the MJ7 or MJE stock Odin file, but if you were on MJE, you must use the MJE Stock Odin tar.md5 file.
Note that this will completely wipe your phone.
If you flashed something non-stock to the recovery partition & your device is a retail SM-N900V, you will have blown the Knox Warranty flag and that will not be fixed by flashing back to stock. However, that means almost nothing in terms of lost functionality (but it will mean your warranty is void).
good luck

Thank you for your reply, if this helps any when I rooted it a while back I used the Kingo Root, then today I decided it was being dumb I wanted to factory reset and that is when I found out recovery wasn't there. To be honest with you I don't know what was on there I do know it was Android 4.3 but that is all I know. I feel so stupid and at a lost. I have tried so many diff things and I fear I have messed it up worse. At this point I would just be happy with it booting up. Right now I have actually put my number back on my NOte 2 for now just so my kids can contact me if they need too etc. But, I have tried doing this in Odin N900vrubmj7 etc. and everytime i try to do it through odin it Fails. So would that mean I need to do the MJ5 that you mentioned. I greatly appreciate your help. Believe me i have learned a valuable lesson from this.

Hey, don't be so hard on yourself. You obviously aren't stupid, you asked for help. I had to reset my phone tonight from something I did in safestrap, no big deal it's all part of the root game. Shoot mine wouldn't get past the custom lock screen even after a battery pull. Anyways I would just flash up to MJE, root and be done with it. Look at it as a learning experience. Now you know what to do if the phone gets messed up again. Relax and enjoy the rest of the night.
Thank you

I appreciate that, so you are saying get MJE install that via odin? Then root and that should be it? My main thing is Odin keeps failing on the install maybe I am not using the right thing so I will look for MJE. I hate to ask this but could you give me step by step or direct me where? I appreciate this. And never touching my phone again after this nightmare!!!

Have you confirmed the md5 to ensure you have a good download? It might be good to redownload Odin and the stock tar. Also make sure you are using the latest and greatest Odin. In you are using odin for s3 you may have issues.

I'll take another shot. Have you tried checking the Nand Erase All and Phone EFS Clear check boxes in Odin with the MD5 and PIT files? I have done these on my phone with no ill effects. Leave the other check boxes as they are and add those two. I got the info from here a while ago. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2610757

[Q] "Downloading.... Do not turn off target!" after TWRP

Can I get a little help here? I have a rooted, otherwise stock i337 that I just used the TWRP root app. I wanted to make a backup of my phone before I flashed a new rom. It downloaded jflteatt and I verified and installed it to /dev/block/mmcblk0p21. then i tried to make a backup, and i'm stuck at "Downloading.... do not turn off target!!!" In the upper left corner there's a "Could not do normal boot. ODIN Mode.
I found the post "[GUIDE] How to Unbrick your AT&T S4 I337 OTA UCUAMF3" but am hesitant to use it, as I am not sure that is what I need to do. I also found some other similar posts, but for different devices so I am again hesitant to rely on those.
I tried pressing home, power and volume down, but it just resets back to this screen. Also, I originally posted this request on the TWRP page, but I think it should be here. If so, I will delete it there.
Please help?
@kamikazees
If you could give more detail that would also help other to help u....such as what firmware that u are running before bricked...... well seem to me that u are either MF3 or MK2 firmware and u installed TWRP ...... u can only install safestrap recovery if u are on MF3 or MK2 firmware. ....Follow my thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2621279 it should get u back to MK2 firmware. .....goodluck

Thank you for the quick response. I have a small update since my first post. I found a poster in another section who got his phone rebooted by trying to send it to download mode, then cancelling out. I did that (pressing power, home and vol down), then when the phone "buzzed" I let off those keys and pressed them again. The phone rebooted, apparently normally.
So now I can check my firmware. Checking firmware is on the "baseband version" right? If so, then that info on my phone is I337UCUEMK2," which I guess is the MK2 firmware.
I deleted the TWRP app, but I'm not sure now if I've even got a recovery (if TWRP failed to install, maybe I'm still on stock?). Do I need to go ahead do the full ODIN tar file unbrick from where I am now? The phone appears to be operating normally.
If not, should I just go ahead and install safestrap recovery? I am trying to eventually get rid of all the bloated samsung junk and get to CM or another ROM. The S4 seems a bit more touchy than some of my previous phones.

Your stock recovery is probably broken, and so it would be best to at least reflash the stock recovery. However, you should be just fine if you want to only install Safestrap and leave recovery broken. I just wouldn't recommend that.

Ok, I want to fix the recovery. Can I use ODIN for that? One post I found said I cannot: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2576291. It was several months ago, however, so I am not sure if it still holds true.
If I can use ODIN, I see that the stock recovery file is in ted77usa's post #3: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2621279. After putting my phone in download mode and connecting it to ODIN, in which slot would I put that file? Some older posts say to put it in the PDA slot, which appears to be the AP slot.
Thanks for your patience. I really don't want to mess this up again.

The first one is in img format and won't work through ODIN, but you can use those commands from terminal emulator to flash it if you download it. Otherwise, the TAR files do work just fine.

If you are rooted and can actually boot the phone then I would install Safestrap for MK2 and install TWRP 3.71 to use as the recovery. I've been using Safestrap and TWRP since I was on MF3. I have also successfully flashed the tar files through Odin to get to MK2 with no problems. If you are rooted then its a really good idea to use Safestrap with TWRP for a recovery. Afterward you can find a list of compatible roms that are specific for Touchwiz on MK2 that for the most part are pretty stable. The stock recovery on this phone is pretty much useless.

This is exactly what I did. I flashed the stock recovery in Odin (yes, it goes in the AP slot), which fixed my first problem. Then I installed Safestrap, then made a ROM slot and installed Goldeneye v. 21 (the 4.3 version for MK2). That removed all of the AT&T bloat (yay), and I did not have to flash the MK2 kernel (which I think would also have gone in the AP slot) because it has it already.
Then I flashed the GE add-on that removed a bunch of Samsung bloat (yay #2). Rebooted and turned off the rest of the Samsung stuff I didn't want. Got the phone up and running beautifully.
What a picky phone! The locked bootloader really causes a lot of trouble to inexperienced flashers like me. I unfortunately have about 5gb of "wasted" space because I understand I cannot flash over the "stock" rom, but I am at least running another ROM that I chose. My phone, my choice. Shame on Samsung!
Thank you very much!

There is actually a way to flash a rom to the stock slot, but I haven't done it. Somewhere in the Safestrap threads explains how to do it. I think you can even get it back to normal if you change your mind.
