Looking for honest opinions. I know the GS3 is the best phone today, and there will always be a new thing coming out soon. But I feel like now is a time when in a few months, there might be a series of Nexus phones coming out, and these 2 will be the best Android devices for a while.
I've lived with my Evo for 2 years and a few more months is fine if there's a good chance the Nexus will be a big leap. On the other hand its so tempting to just get the GS3

I was in the same boat as you. I ended up buying the One X. Then I bought the Galaxy S3. Haha..
It will definitely be interesting to see what the new nexus devices come out with. I always say I'll wait for this or wait for that, but inevitably I cave. You can't go wrong with the Galaxy S3. The international model will always have a strong developer following. I worry that the legendary developer following will become very fragmented when 5 different nexus devices are released. That has always been a claim to fame for the nexus line.

S3 for me hands down.
GNex was a pretty big disappointment for me. The only thing it had going for it was Vanilla Android 4.0 ICS. Everything else about the phone I really hated. If Samsung follows the same trend with the next Nexus, then the next Nexus will be another disappointment in my books.
However, rumors whisper the next Nexus may be a Motorola phone. We'll see.

If the next Nexus is a Motorola, then that will be a disappointment. Even though Google owns Motorola Mobility, If i see another "Droid" by Motorola I'm gonna projectile vomit...
Even though the GNex did not turn heads with its CPU/GPU/Cam, I think it was still a breakthrough device, it's still, to this day imho the best looking device out, front is literally flawless. LED notifier anyone? Even though I'm probably/most likely going to buy the SGS3, it's gonna be tough going back to a device that actually has buttons, that **** is old.....

The next Nexus is not going to be launched until the end of the year, given how quickly devices/tech rolls over, 5 months for a device is already pushing it. The S3 is a beastly of a phone, but trust me, by October/November, there will be rumblings of the S4, the Nexus will be out, or multiple Nexuses, and while most are going to still be waiting for ICS, Nexus users will be rockin' Jelly Bean..
I quite want one, but doubt I'll find anyone to take my skyrocket + cash for this beast of a phone.
No upgrades on my account until september/October I forget. So I guess I'll have to see if anything is good then if nobody will trade me now.

I think it's pretty dumb to wait for vaporware. If this was a device that had specs that'd make sense, but it seems pretty silly to wait on something and not even know WTF you're waiting for.
edit: Oh, sorry it isn't even vaporware. That's something that's announced and doesn't come to fruition. This hasn't even been announced or hinted at as of yet... silly.

As you noted, there's always something new coming out. This means that the decision of when to jump in is entirely personal. I really think you should lay out your own minimum requirements and go from there. For me, the GS3 is a no go because one of my requirements is a next gen GPU, not a refreshed 2011 GPU. That's just one example of how I decide if I'm willing to upgrade yet. Until my desired specs are met I'm holding out with my sensation.

The nexus has repeatedly represent the minimum standard for android and I emphasize the minimum standard. Starting with the nexus one, first 1ghz android. Nexus s with old galaxy s 1ghz and now current galaxy nexus with a dual core 1ghz. Samsung galaxy s series has been known for exceeding that standard and creating
Premium specs. Galaxy s had the best cup/gpu, s2 best cup/gpu and now s3 which has demonstrated it has the top dog cpu /gpu. Samsung has show again and again it s committed to the best.

joking aside, i think the GS3 is a significant upgrade from the phones from the S2 era... and i believe that the new nexus phone will not present that much of an upgrade save for Jelly Bean.

This is so true, and many people share the same sentiment on the galaxy nexus.
vanilla android is great but the hardware is so lacking and gimp.
The promise of having the latest upgrade is not true anymore, it barely got 4.0.4.
I felt sorry for the people that kept their phone stocked and was stuck on the buggy 4.0.1...
but yeah it did look sexy..
I for one would like to hear more details on what the five Nexus devices really are. Are they going to be competing phones, phones with predetermined near-identical specs for dev compatibility, or not phones at all? The former is the ideal case, in terms of hardware at least.1 Combined with the customizable soft nav-bar (I can't help but find non-customizable, non-rotatable nav buttons lame as hell now) the choice would be a no-brainer for me.
But that's an ideal scenario. (Nope, ideal scenario is the Nexus Note )
1 The second would probably be ideal for homebrew deving, but without competition there's no guarantee of real hardware improvements.
There are already ample amount of posts regarding this, so it's not fair to ask the same thing again and again, instead searching would have given you all the answers you need

If you're dead set on getting a Nexus, you should stick it out and wait for the next round because they're probably going to be awesome (word is 5 different manufacturers are gonna be making them). The SGS3 phone is a great device, but if you're looking at a Nexus then you're obviously wanting something vanilla and the SGS3 is very, very far from vanilla.
depends if you don't want to root then go nexus as that will be better in the update department but if you are rooting the sgs3 is definitely worth picking up now considering its the best smartphone of the summer and there will be a lot of dev support.
"All this knowledge is giving me a major brainer!"
look, the thing which is important is that can you wait with patience or not? if yes, then wait as long as you can to buy a better device than s3. there are no details out yet regarding next nexus, so no one can say how it will be. In this case you better buy s3 and enjoy ur present time.

I just picked up my Nexus 4 last week, and really like it. Rooted with Xylon 4.2.2 ROM, and Matrix kernel v7.0, I am averaging around 16 hours or so total battery life, and like 5 hours On Screen time every day, the past three days since on this combo.
I post on a lot of different tech forums, everyone telling me I am crazy for buying the Nexus 4, should have gotten the Note 2 #1 ( Actually which I had, and returned it two weeks later, great phone, amazing battery life, but 5.5" screen, is just too large for my every day phone ) For that same price, I also picked up a Nexus 7 tablet, and the Nexus 4, same price as my Note 2 out of contract full price.
On these other tech forums, said the Galaxy S3 is better, the One X is better, and that the Nexus 4 should be like the 4th option to go with. WTF ?
My smartphone history goes like this; iPhone 1, iPhone 3G, MyTouch 3G, Nexus-One, EVO 4G, Nexus-S 4G, Galaxy S2, Galaxy Nexus, HTC One X, Note 2, Nexus 4.
Out of all those phones, I have to say I felt the most comfortable with my Nexus phones, to quote that classic line "It just works", I prefer the minimalistic design of the Nexus line, not too flashy, or fancy overdone UI's, but a smooth and simple design, that I feel most comfortable with. Sure I know the Nexus 4 is not the most powerful smartphone available today, and maybe not the best screen tech, but I am happy with it, and battery life isn't as bad as the nightmare I read.
Plus once Android 5.0 KLP is released possibly this Summer, the Nexus 4 will get it right away, good luck with your new HTC One, or Galaxy S4 getting 5.0 KLP anytime soon, it will be a very long wait, even custom ROM's for non Nexus phones will have a long wait to get 5.0.

A few people that did respond, said they are on Verizon, and if the Nexus 4 was available, and had LTE for Verizon, they would get it right away. Personally I hate Verizon, super expensive, but they are the biggest carrier in the U.S., I think the Nexus-Five will have LTE, and Google would be smart to have a CDMA version to work with that carrier, could be a ton more sales.
Rumors point to Google announcing Android 5.0 "Key Lime Pie" at this May's Google I/O show. And possibly a release this June / July. Would Google also release the Nexus-Five then this Summer, the first phone with 5.0 KLP ? Or just give the Nexus 4 Key Lime Pie, and hold off on the Nexus-Five to the typical Nov/Dec release ?

I do. I really like this Nexus 4. Just surprised people look at it like a cheap low end Android device. I think it's easily one of the top phones out there today. Better spec'd than the Galaxy S3, way better than the One X, sure the Note 2 might be better, but that's too large for my tastes. Not sure why so much hate for the Nexus 4, maybe because it's not a Samsung or HTC made Nexus ?
This LG Nexus is much nicer than my old Samsung Nexus, nicer screen, way better build quality, not even mentioning the better hardware, but that's a given with a one year newer device.

Samslut has a huge following. I just went to a T-Mobile store. Every single employee had a Samsung phone.
Every. Single. One.
One of them, I know for a fact, had ordered a Nexus 4 back in December. Hater.
Most people equate price with worth. If something cost more it must be better. If something cost less it must be worse. Look at all apples stuff. Cost an arm and leg for their "premium" junk. Cost more, must be better.

Well, their hardware and build quality is top notch. Mind you, they leave out things for a while like LTE, NFC, etc.
It's just the software... :shudder:
Also, that elitist mentality based on ignorance that seems to come with the device kind of blows.

With the exception of the N4 there really isn't a much better option on T-Mobile than the S3 for high end phones. Everything else there is mid-low range.
I think Samsung's success comes from:
1: They are a household name. They make everything. People can relate.
2: They advertise the crap out of their phones.
Most people aren't tech savvy. When they see non-stop apple and samsung commercials they believe that they are the best things out there. They just don't know any better.

Absolutely. I couldn't agree more.
That just goes to show you that advertising works. It's OK, all the haters can suck it.
I own a nexus s and I've recommended Samsung to everyone I know for about the last year or so....when I told my friends I wanted the LG Nexus they all looked appalled that I would recommend one manufacturer to everyone, then suddenly choose a device for myself from another. Some people just don't understand that not everyone cares what brand an item is. I picked a Nexus 4 because I wanted to stay with the Nexus family for its open nature and amazing development community. I pick devices for my needs. My needs are not the same as any one of my friends. They all like to buy a phone and keep it unrooted, etc. And that's fine. But I like to mod the living piss out of mine. If I could have remotely unlocked the bootloader while it was on its way to me I would have lol
This is what makes android so great, and it is why iOS will become known as an epic fail. Variety is the spice of life If they keep shoveling crap in front of people and expect them to just choke it down without even considering the fact that they may not like the same thing as the person next to them, they will eventually fail.

Yeah it's all about the advertising.
iOS advertising is condescending. People see the commercials and think they are elite for owning one.
Samsung ads have been more of the attacking/put down variety. People carry the bashing to the real world. Even if it means bashing other Android devices.
Advertising is a powerful tool...especially to the layman.
I had the option to pick whatever phone I wanted and went with the Nexus 4 because I can't stand touchwix and the note is just too big for my taste.
I didn't want an S3 knowing that the S4 is around the corner and not knowing when the S3 was getting future updates.

Couldn't be happier with mine. Just switched from the one s, nobody was making any Roms for the the US one s and got tired of waiting on tmo to release their jellybloat. This is my first nexus phone. Well i take that back the first one had a defect in the screen that looked like a dimple in the pixels.
I'm surprised HTC doesn't have more of a cult following as their phones have some of the nicest build quality among the phones I've used. Samsung phones are nice too but I just can't get over the overly plastic feeling in their designs. I prefer a heavier phone for some reason; something that doesn't feel hollow behind the screen. To each their own at the end of the day... those same haters are gonna be the cry babies in the Samsung forums wishing they had the fast Android updates and Google support we receive with our Nexus devices. Tell them to have fun with their Samsung source code and move along.

HTC has a few things against them
1) They put out phones slowly.
2) Slow software updates. It takes forever to update Sense.
3) Almost no advertising or other aggressive marketing.
4) They just don't have the funds or clout that Samsung has.
I am happy with my LG made Nexus, at the end of the day, I don't care, I mean all these phones are mainly Korean made, and LG is no slouch or small mom and pop shop.
But I will admit, that HTC has been making some really good designs lately, the One X in my opinion was the best looking Android phone of 2012, and the new One phones looks really great. I would love to have HTC back on the next Nexus. But if the Nexus-Five is another LG produced phone, that won't stop me one bit from buying it.
I've been debating buying a Nexus 4 for awhile. At this point, do you guys still think its worth it? I've heard rumors that they might be coming out with a new model this year, plus we have the GS4 and the HTCOne coming out very shortly. Do you guys think its worth the money? I really like the OS, no carrier stuff in it. Plus I'm off contract with ATT, so I dont have to worry about that, ill have good service.
-Thanks
I would still buy it. The N5 is still a rumour and anyway regardless if it does come out you'll always get OS updates before Samsung and HTC.
Maybe wait for a while for the much rumoured Motorola x? Nexus 4 is worth the money. You get what you paid for. Except for sd card and battery life, everything about this is excellent! I am overlooking the camera cuz no one should expect a dslr quality image from a mobile phone.
I am very happy with my nexus 4. Whoever I show it to, is really pleased with design of this device. They have never heard of this phone. In fact the nexus line. Imho, if you look for features on a smartphone go for Samsung, if you look for pure stock experience with updates and support go for nexus 4.

Heavy?????? I wouldn't say so at 139 grams.
It is hard to me to get any other android phone these days. I used to work at sprint and hated that they weren't going to have nexus 4, galaxy nexus was just too old at the time and with no voice and data...
I have used gs3 and one x plenty, neither work as well as stock android. Touch wiz is buggy and takes away core features while adding new ones that don't work too well, aside from being very laggy compared to stock.
Sense is not bad, but multitasking on it is horrific, even if you root it.
Both aren't great with software updates, HTC ones never come and Samsung ones end up buggy in most cases.
Motorola ui thus far is too inferior to even consider. Point is, no thing really compared to stock in my opinion. You may see much better benchmarks on gs4 but I doubt day to day it'd prove as stable and smooth as n4.
So, to me... Yes, worth the money, specially considering you'd get one for less than $400 with no contract! My only major issue with n4 is the antenna, it is subpar compared to other devices, same was for gn.

lol @ almost a year old. April 13th will be 5 months. And yes i would suggest it if you like stock android. If your more into skins and bloat, go for the HTC one or the S4 at nearly double the price.
Yeah, that's my fault. I thought they came out last summer, didn't know they were that new yet. I'm just tired of all the manufacturers screwing with the phones, and the constant problems. updates are immediately, you will never regret a Nexus phone
I've asked myself the same questions as yourself before buying myself the nexus 4.
First, looking at timeline of nexus device releases, I've noticed it releases one at every year. So i assume the next nexus phone will only be here by November-December 2013 even if it will be announced at the May Google I/O.
Galaxy S4 is indeed a great device specwise (even better if you can get the 8 core version). But for me, it's still not a Nexus device, the build quality must be inferior to the current Nexus 4 (based on S3), looks exactly like the S3 which is EXTREMELY popular device (not unique), and the Nexus 4 is much more affordable priced.
HTC One, the only thing that will attract me over the nexus 4 is the full aluminum body. Not a Sense fan. That's it.
So with all those, i ended up with the Nexus 4 and I don't regret it.
Its not even halfway to a year old. Its not outdated hardware. S4 Pro is still one of Qualcomms fastest chips. and the Snapdragon 600 uses the same gpu "Adreno 320"
Almost a year? N4 might be too complicated for you.
And yeah google will release another nexus phone...probably 7months from. The N4 is still the best android phone out and it is the best out of the box android device I've used in 4yrs of android by far.
Its blazing fast despite using an older soc. Faster as there's hardly any overlay on it. Next phone will probably be the X phone which will rumoured boasts the S800 which will be fast but the N4 is no slouch.

Facing a problem here, and it's expectedly another Nexus 5 vs Moto X debate.
I'm really tempted to get the N5. I originally had my mind set on getting the G2 but seeing the prohibitive price and quality control problems I decided against it. The N5 is definitely very, very appealing with its $399 price tag and the fact that it isn't out of stock for 5 months like the N4 was (please, 32GB only please, I cannot live with 16GB, no if ands or buts).
However, the Moto X came along and threw a wrench into my plans. It just looks so awesome and sexy and it's got so many things that the N5 is missing. It's got a white front (+1 for Moto X), AMOLED screen (+1, at least for me), Active display or whatever its called (+1), Dual Krait with an Adreno 320 (big +1 for performance/efficiency balance). As for performance, I must say that I'm making a judgment based on the present, because the future is the whole point of this post.
Here's where it comes down to: how futureproof is this device? As it costs more than the N5, I would expect for it to last as long as the N5 but with the MSM8960T vs MSM8974 debate the Moto X doesn't fare well against the Nexus. I fear this because I had a Motorola Defy; the OMAP 3630 was good until the release of ICS, until CM9 came out. That was when the single Cortex-A8 core began showing its age and things really became less pleasant. That was also when all my buddies here took off and got new phones except for people from India who got the phone because it was cheap. They don't seem to mind, given that every ROM regardless of how laggy it is (most of them are) gets a "Wow, this ROM is really smooth!" from all the users.
What do you guys think? How futureproof do you think the Moto X is? Do you think that the S4 Pro here will yield a good smooth experience for 2 years or do you think that I would be better off with the Nexus 5? Of course, software is where it differs from the Defy; official updates stopped at 2.3 for the Defy but Motorola seems to be supporting the Moto X well.
Considering Google is making the future versions of Android to run better on lower end phones. I have no doubt future updates will be silky smooth!! I myself am not worrying to much about the future as this probably will be with me for under a year.

Dumped my nexus 5. Abysmal battery life & speakers (good luck ever hearing a phone call coming through). I like the Moto X screen better, not to mention the features.
Plus who are we kidding, us techies get a new phone very year.
I could be wrong but I feel like the next big improvements in Smartphone tech will be battery efficiency, camera quality and new faster internet/radio speeds.
I honestly don't think we will see major improvements like we did in the last couple years as far as CPU/GPU power goes. Google also seems to be pushing efficiency (support for 512mb ram etc) with its most recent Android build. So really any currently "fast" phone will be just as fast a couple years from now. Just the camera/battery performance will be lackluster compared to its future competition. If you game a lot at max details on your phone I could see the N5 coming ahead a bit just because the S800/330 is a very powerful combo.
With that in mind if we look at the moto X vs N5 what do we see... well the Moto X definitely seems to have stronger battery performance and the cameras seem to be about the same overall (though excelling/failing in different areas). I pretty much faced the same question you do right now and decided to try out the Moto X first.
For me it was a little easier too because I snapped up a republic wireless model for $300, so the unlocked price is similar to the N5. Plus sprint has strong LTE in my area.
I look at it like this: phones like Nexus 5 that has to power a 1080 screen will need bigger hardware to deliver a smooth experience. Notice that all the phones equipped with Snapdragon 600, carries the Adreno 320 yet is reported to have a good browsing experience. My unprofessional opinion is that the reason Moto X feels as good as it does is because it uses the same GPU as the S4/HO but has a smaller resolution to power. As we've witnessed as far back as the Galaxy Nexus, you don't need a quad-core to have a snappy experience and that the experience is more GPU-dependent. A lot of N4 users disable 2 of their cores to save on battery power and still have a snappy experience.
Keep it for a year or little bit over that, sell the moto x and buy a new one. Just buy the device now and enjoy. If you think about future proof you can never buy anything. I mean with wearables, flexible screens and so many things going on who knows how the smartphone market will turn out in the near future. Nothing is future proof, Moto X will hold fine at least for a year or 15 months, sure there will be much faster devices than moto x, nexus 5 but that's the case for any phone.

Not sure what carrier your on but if you can switch to Verizon, you can get the moto x for $50 I believe.
I agree with alpha's statement. We are due for a new battery technology and if that doesn't come soon then I believe the OS makers with be working on optimization of their OS's to increase battery life. Google's direction of lower spec requirements for devices on future of android builds shows this.

Verizon really? Most of their phones have that ugly Verizon logo branding, full of bloat, last in updates, last or sometimes will not get flagship phones. To top it off useless CDMA.
Sure their network is great but I would any day choose a gsm carrier where at least I can use any phone I want. Why support such a carrier who wants so much control and basically screw customers.

I'll see with the Nexus 5 first. I'm not a data user and I'm not one of those people who feel compelled to check their Facebook every 2 minutes, so I think I'm good. I'll just UC and run at 50% brightness and that should be good.

Sorry guys, I'm not American.
That means I'm stuck with TELUS at least they give you a 10% discount on your monthly bill if you bring an unlocked phone.
Don't forget the fact that Google owns Motorola since last year. They can have Motorola build the phone awesome like they have done for decades and focus their android team better on development for the Motorola phone. To me Google didn't buy one of the all time leading phone manufactures just to keep having asus or lg build their nexus line. The moto x has brought some industry firsts that make a big impact for the user. Something that has not really happened for awhile. Also how future proof are you wanting? This phone will last you 10 years I bet if you wanted it to. It's the mobile computer world, every month a better device and better software comes out to use the hardware, you can't really future proof a mobile phone, just learn to accept that and learn to be happy with whatever device you choose. A good way to decide is do this. Write down on paper the pros and con's that talky matter to you in the phone then add them up on a point system and choose that way.

Since 2k11
I buy nexus phones thinking I'll keep them for two years, but no matter how well the current one is working, I end up going nuts for the new model. Totally fine though as you can recoup a good deal after a year with a nexus phone. I usually end up spending less than $150 upgrading after selling the old one.
Regardless of what a new moto costs me, if they make an x sequel in this same form factor with better battery and a faster processor, I will buy it!

They announced they were going to purchase Motorola in 2011, but didn't finalize the acquisition until May 2012.

Cannot understate how much the constant GNex development kept the phone going for 2+years.
Moto X isn't going to benefit in this way. However, having had my phone usage/habits changed by Active Notifications and Voice controls, it will be extremely difficult to move "back" to a phone that doesn't have them; future-proofed or not.

I agree, but frankly, the model has changed. Google is pushing out many of their updates either through the Play Store, or through updates to the Google Play Services. For instance, with they announced 4.3, many of the improvements highlighted were actually to the Play Services and they were pushed out to all phones running 4.1+.
Back when the GNex was introduced, most updates still had to get pushed through an actual OS upgrade. 2.x/3.x -> 4.x -> 4.1 were all major improvements that affected the core of the OS. 4.1 -> 4.2 -> 4.2.x -> 4.3 -> 4.4 have all been incremental changes, with many of the core features being available through Play Services. I'd go as far as saying the last serious change to the core OS, that really affected the whole user experience, was Project Butter in 4.1.
As much as I like new Android versions, people running on 4.1 are having a very similar user experience to people running on 4.4. They're running many of the same updates through Services or Play Store apps, the UI is consistent, and the performance is still excellent.
Turned into quite a long post, but I had a lot of the same thoughts when I decided to stick with a Moto X instead of getting another Nexus phone. The GNex was really excellent and its lifespan was substantially increased by devs and Project Butter. But I'm getting to a point where a stable phone with an official OS really hits all the notes I need, and with the new upgrade model, not to mention Moto's proactive 4.4 upgrade, I think this phone is going to have a good, long lifespan.

Absolutely! I would have been more than happy to stay on 4.2.2 for a while (although I love the 4.4 battery life increase :good: )
He makes some valid points, especially on the price. In summary, he argues that the price isn't outrageous for a number of reasons:
- The specs of this phone are insane and can justify a higher price tag
- The premium build on this phone is unlike any of the previous Nexus devices
- Companies such as Apple and Samsung sell phones that are even more expensive. Nexus 6 is actually a bit cheaper than it's competitors.
- The Nexus 6 is Google's step on becoming mainstream and more premium feeling Stock Android experience
What do you guys think?
All this is true. I think main reason people are pissed is because this is like a complete switch over tight. Go from 4" phones that are 350 to 6" phones that are 1.2x the previous price with no in between ya know? Such as a smaller device with slim down spec and cheaper price. It is true that compare to others it is cheap...but let not forget, lg g3 is cheaper and it gives us just about everything the n6 (32gb) offers (almost) so google really had no excuse
Yeah, I can understand that. Big changes aren't always welcome.
The LG G3 is a great phone but the Nexus 6 has (slightly) newer specs. Of course, this probably won't be noticable at all.
Also, the Nexus 6 has a better design in my opinion even if I loved the G3's design.
Google is just trying something new.
The jump from the Galaxy Nexus to the N4 was just as precipitous, just in the opposite direction. IIRC, the GN was something like $600 when it was released. The VZW on-contract price was $300. It was not cheap at all.
I personally don't care for the price, its not an issue with me because of my career. And honestly, come on, people expected to get such specs and fast charging at 400? lol...come on yall...let be real here. Our economy is inflated that means so will nexus devices

Just saying, the fast charging isn't something that costs a lot to implement. Its been there since the LG G2 even the nexus 5 has the hardware but it hasn't been activated for use. Even the new moto x has turbo charging, its part of the 800,801,805 chips.

I think it just has become an expectation from the Nexus series since the N4 started the whole price reduction thing. Just like No SD Card Support or Removable Battery once something adheres from one generation to the next people assume it will remain that way for Nexus.
As for me, it cannot come out soon enough!

Dear All,
Yes, the price of the device is not Nexus 5 territory anymore. Google listened to your requests:
1. Larger battery -> Complied.
2. Better speakers. ->Complied.
3. Android 5.0 -> Complied.
4. More screen on time -> Complied.
5. Premium feel -> Complied.
What more can you ask from Google. They met our requests but also added a new direction that they feel will be of best interests for their business model. They are clearly moving towards more mainstream this time as 4 carriers will carry the phone right from the start. Samsung can't have all the fun with the phablet segment so Google and Apple wants a piece of the pie. Apple won't argue with money since Samsung took so many sales from them with the Note series. Google did leave us Nexus owners a bad taste in our mouth since we were use to the bargain price for a well rounded phone. Now, they want to move in another direction. They did keep the N5 active for people waiting for the N6 if they are thinking of upgrading from N4 or other devices. The N5 is the answer if you want a more "one hand friendly" phone and the N5 is a great phone. With the Lollipop soon to be on the phone, it will even get better with battery life and the overall experience.
Finally, if the N6 is right for you... hand over $649 / $699 to Google and enjoy your monster N6. If the N6 doesn't float your boat, the N5 is a great phone (current owner of N5 too) to fill your needs or wait till early spring/summer 2015 for 64-bit flagships to appear in a smaller footprint.
I think I will get Nexus on Verizon. And try it for a year if I don't like it, more 64 bit phones will be out which will present more options. I'm betting that the nexus will have better support a year or two when comparing it to Touchwiz.
My note 2 is starting to feel a bit slow.
Ill admit. I was floored when I saw the price but when you think about it, its not overpriced at all. Im pretty much sold on picking one up and upgrading from my N4. Only thing that would deter me is if reviews are utterly terrible, and something tells me thats not happening
I honestly don't believe they are canning the n5... Kind of like apple having the 6 and 6+

I think it's a tablet. I think that Google and other companies are forgetting that these are phones. It's a ridiculously big phone, and I doubt it's not going to go mainstream. Phone makers need to remember these are portable devices, they keep getting bigger and bigger and are officially in tablet territory now.
Price was never the issue for me. For once it has quite good specs without skimping on stuff but the phone itself is MASSIVE. If I buy one I'll have to buy new clothes.

I think you're forgetting that every year people complain that phones are getting too big, and yet people continue to buy them happily. Even Apple has seen enough evidence to release Android-sized phones so you know it's obvious if they're changing their plan, stubborn as they are. As mentioned in the video, the Nexus 6 is the same height as the iPhone 6 plus and doesn't appear to be much larger than the Note 4...so don't let the screen-size alone determine your beliefs.
Do you think for one second that if Google is able to achieve sales similar to those of the Samsung Note series that they'll be disappointed? Clearly there is a market for this size phone and it's continuing to grow as people realize bigger is better with phones, despite the drawbacks. That's not to say it's for everyone, so you can continue to choose from one of the many options available at a size/price you prefer.
I wonder what the on contract price will be

i think considering the s10 x64 processors will be out and be a standard in the s6 and m9 ..etc the n6 isn't worth the price tag.

Google is never going to encroach on Samsung. Ever. It's futile to try and Nexus devices have never sold well. Bigger is better, until you pass 5.5" or so. When does it stop? 7" phone? 7.5" phone screen? How big do people really need their phone? I can be equally productive on a nexus 5 as I can a nexus 6. Period.

I've seen this argument quite a few times now, where exactly did previous Nexus phones "skimp". It seems to be something people are using to justify the high price despite for the past two years everyone saying the nexus was a high end phone for half the price...

I think by the time 64 bit actually matters in phones I will have moved on to the next Nexus, so it's not an issue for me. Like most tech people (I think), I'm not the type of person who keeps the same phone for more than a year or two max.

Google will certainly make a dent considering they are selling this Nexus via all US carriers for the first time...so it doesn't really matter what they did in the past, this is a new era. They definitely won't make a huge dent, but it has a chance to be meaningful.
How can you possibly argue that "bigger is better until you pass 5.5" or so". That's not some magical number that has any real meaning...it's simply your brain deciding that you've had enough, despite the fact that you've never used the Nexus 6. A million people said the same thing when phones moved to 4.7"...then they said it again at 5.0"...then they said it again at 5.2"...they said it about the Note when it came out...and now they're saying the same thing about the Nexus 6...they've been wrong every single time and I see no reason to believe that suddenly this is it.
I think we're probably pushing the limit of how big you want a smartphone, but that's EXACTLY what I want to happen. I want the biggest damn phone that isn't "too big". We won't know what "too big" is until we get there, but I don't believe the Note 4 was too big and we know that the Nexus 6 is not that much bigger..much of the half inch screen size difference is made up for by smaller bezels, which is also something I want to see continue to happen.

Ridiculous. Here's a nice little study you can do at home. Go pick up your Nexus 7 and hold it to your face, or try and put it in your pocket. Think about carrying that thing with you all day long as a phone. There are plenty of examples of what "too big" is, we're there now. You may want your tablet to be a phone, but most professionals need something portable, and easy to carry, that isn't going to require being kept in a backpack. 5.5" phones like the LG G3 are actually still small enough to be considered a phone, I've held the iPhone 6+, trust me, we're there, phones are now too big.
