I have tried to search a lot for a solution both on xda and google, but couldn't find an answer.... is there a way i can get rid of the roaming indicator ("R" just above the signal bars)?? I am on a roaming location but the data on roaming is at home rates for me... but due to this R sign, i'm unable to see whether i'm on 3G or 2G...

Is there any MOD/CUSTOM ROM which supports the possibility to have 2 indicators (1 for signal strength, 1 for data connection) like it is done for HTC Sense or Samsung Touchwiz?

Hi there, I've noticed that my phone is always in Roaming mode, ie an R is showing in the signal bars icon. It's really not affecting my phone , because I know that I am not roaming, I am connected to my operator (Claro Honduras) . But I wonder what this is all about (maybe because I am not on T-Mobile) , or if there is a way to fix it. Also because of that I have to keep my Data Roaming setting ON, or I won't be able to access my data plan.

There are 2 specific areas in CT where I really don't have good Sprint service at all and the signal cuts in and out. I really don't have a problem anywhere else. I was wondering if it was possible to manually the tweak the PRL on my HTC Evo so that it roams in certain areas. I know Verizon has much better service in these areas. If so, Is it possible that I would have 3G service while roaming?
I've read up on the disclaimer that if I roam too much Sprint can void my contract, but I'm only at these areas on occasion. If not, maybe its possible to use Tasker and another program to automatically switch me to roaming based on my GPS location? If that's the case, I wasn't sure if I would be stuck with 1x or 3G
Any thoughts would be great,
~J
Check out the app Roam Control in the market. It's the only one I know of that can force you into roaming and hold you there. Also if you're a locale or tasker user, he included a plugin for them, so you can automate the roaming.
I couldnt believe it......I was roaming in my own damn house 2day! In the middle of Los Angeles.......they must be backed up like crazy aver since AT&T had to stop stealing from Verizon's towers......lol :\

Hey does that app control roaming and non roaming?? Because sometimes Ill be roaming in a location I know has service, so Id like it to search for that service consistently instead of just going into roaming......thanks!

So is this different than just going into the options on my phone and changing to affiliated networks? Also when roaming is it only 1x speed for data or is it 3G?
Thanks,

It lets you switch between Home (e.g. Sprint), Roaming (e.g. Verizon), and Automatic (e.g. Sprint until the signal is gone)

Never seen the config screen for affiliated networks, so I'm not sure. The issue with the built in 'Automatic" roaming option is that it ranks ANY Sprint signal above ANY Verizon signal. So if you have 0.001 bars on Sprint and 4 bars on Verizon... it's going to pick Sprint... and then it's going to drain your battery because it will keep losing the signal.
Whatever voodoo the app is doing, it let's you pick Verizon and lock onto it until you change it back. My office is in a dead zone and I was walking out at the end of the day with 20% battery, now that I force myself on to Verizon at work I can leave with a solid 70% or more left on the battery.
hey heres a link to do it!

I'm running CM7 7.1-RC1 (and earlier nightlies). In Settings, under Wireless & network settings, Mobile networks, Network Operators, I selected the one available where I currently am ("ROAMING"). I got the R above the cellular signal strength bars. Below the quick action icons when I swipe down Notifications is "ROAMING".
Now I want to turn off (voice) roaming but can't figure out how to do that. I don't want to pay roaming costs (any idea if T-Mobile will charge roaming costs? I want to be able to control it regardless.). Also, is there a way to turn off the cellular radio but leave GPS and WiFi on?
I'm not talking about data roaming, but in the Mobile network settings I have everything unchecked (Data enabled, International data roaming, National data roaming, Use only 2G networks).
In Notifications is a bang in a triangle "International data roaming" and "You have lost data connectitivity because..." (I can't read it all, tapping doesn't show anything making the notification a bit useless).
Under APNs I have the choice between Simple and T-Mobile US, the later is chosen.
When WiFi calling is active, the radio strength shows just gray bars (no x, no R). Of course that is only good if I'm at the hotel!
Airplane mode isn't a good option, but thanks for suggesting it.

I finally got through to T-Mobile (40 minutes wait time? They must be preparing for the purchase by AT&T by lowering their standards). The rep (who was OK) had to put me on hold twice and check on things, but eventually he came back and let me know that if there is no T-Mobile service, then there are no roaming fees (note: inside the US for a US customer). So I just have to make sure that T-Mobile is preferred. I hope this helps someone!
All my other previous questions still stand, but add these: How, in CM7, do I make sure that my provider is preferred for voice? For data?
I find these areas a bit weak, which likely is very stock Android, so would I file a feature request against Google or Cyanogen or both? Or maybe someone has (please provide the # or URL!)?
Your phone will always default to the most powerful signal, whether that's with a stock MT4G or one with a custom ROM. T-mobile has no charge for roaming, data or voice, in the US. You're making making a mountain out of a mole hill.

Although you carefully didn't answer any of my remaining questions, by implication you are saying that I can not have control over the signal. Which doesn't match my experience where it would not choose roaming until selected the first time.

Which is what I said in my second post.

Typically that idiom means you are making a mountain out of mole hill knowing the facts, which I didn't til the time of my second post, so really it sounds to me like an unnwarranted slam.

Alright, I'll answer them. You asked how you can set to not roam on voice or data. Voice, there is no way to keep it from roaming. You can go in and do a manual network selection, but the next time it comes to a roaming tower that has a more powerful signal then it will jump to it. On the data, you can only tell the phone to not roam on other's towers but you cannot set it to where it always chooses a lower signal T-mobile tower over a stronger signal roaming tower. Which means that if you set it to not roam on data then if your phone connects up the stronger signal that happens to be a roaming partner then you won't get any data connection, even if there is a T-mobile tower available. The phone just chooses the strongest symbol.
Hi everyone, i've a little bug .. When i'm on my 3g data, everything fine, but when i'm moving place then it switch itself to 2g because of lower signal my mobile data network just stop working, it shows that i'm on Edge (the little E next to the signal bars) but i've no internet on my mobile, i have to switch off completly my mobile network then switch it on again to make it work .. still on 2g because of low signal..
The things is that when i'm traveling in train, i'm on 3g then it switch itself to 2g, and that's very anoying because i've to switch off the data then re-enable it to continue surfing ..
Thanks in advance for your help !
Up
Please can you try and say if it make the same ?
3G spends on the area in which you are. If that place doesn't have 3G then you will get 2G.
edge is slow as ´1990s modem´s internet, thats why is no internet

Yeah i know but you didn't understand what i wanted to tell..
Just try, when you have 3g (H) go to settings and enable 2g only, this will change your mobile network from H to E (which is normal) but when you're in E, you won't be able to have the mobile network internet, to have it again, you will have to disable mobile data, and re-enable it .. until then you won't be able to have internet ! So not even push notification ! the signal bar in quick settings will remain "orange"..
But if you disable mobile data and re-enable it , you will still be on 2g, but you will have internet ! even if it slow (because of 2g, which is normal too)
Bump..
