Google Maps Navigation "just drive" feature gone? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

With older versions of Google Maps Navigation, one could just turn on Navigation and drive while the Navigation map was displayed without entering a destination.
I don't see that in the newest Maps. You have to select a destination. Anyone know how to force that mode again?

Yup its gone. Roll back updates if you want it back.

Not liking the new maps navigation at all. Been using Waze. Very interesting app.

[Q] Google Maps and Navigation

Hi guys I have a question, does the google maps on your Streak have built in launcher to google navigation or is navigation a stand alone app?
For example if you search an address in google maps does it give you the option for both directions and navigation? or just directions?
Because I bought a Streak used, and the latter seems to be the case for me.
Thanks.

I do not have my streak on me at present but i am sure its the latter
stand alone app in launcher bud
Oh, I see, geez that sucks. Oh well, I hope 2.2 update brings lots of needed changes. I love the 5 inch screen, but really thats not enough.
It should be able to do both. When in google maps, hit menu, directions, choose a place hit go and screen will show up with directions and also "show on map" or "navigate"options to click on.
or you can use just the navigation app.
Google maps does have an icon which when you click will take you to a screen where you get options for navigation like voice, past trips etc. you can also place regular trips as icons on desktop

Agreed, navigation is an option on current google maps.
I have the navigation icon also.. remember that google maps will not update itself unless you visit market and install the latest version from there first..

The navigation button is enabled in google maps labs. It becomes an option on your icon along with call the icon.
Great if you are searching for a place you can just click navigate to get to it.
Also when directions are invoked in google maps it gives you the option, to use the normal map directions or navigation
The google labs options are good. It has layers button, measure tool etc

Thanks for the update. I pulled the battery and now it seems to work fine. Maybe i was installing and uninstall too many apps from the market?? Not sure but in any case its working now.

Google Maps w/out Latitude

is there anyway or anywhere to get google maps on the shift without the latitude app? i just hate seeing it in my app list! i never use it and i don't see available to freeze in titanium. is it just part of maps?
Yeah latitude, places, and navigation are all part of maps.
Ok. My problem is that while trying to upgrade to a newer version of Google Maps (5.6), I had to uninstall my older version (5.2) using Titanium Backup app. But I did not know that removing Google Maps would also remove Navigation, Places & Latitude. Now all of them are gone from my phone and the new package of Google Maps (version 5.6, size 6.39MB) is also NOT INSTALLING on the phone! So what is the remedy left now? Can I download Google Maps from the Market to install it on my phone?
You should be able to just dl maps from the market to get everything back, and I'm pretty sure if u try to get rid of latitude ,or any of the others, google maps just keeps force closing

google maps offline doesn't work?

ok so google maps offline. whats the deal?
i understood it as ,
i zoom out save large map.
disconnect internet allow gps to lock
then search for a nearby road...... and nothing?
whats the point in saving a 50mb map if it cant show me how to from a to B?
or find a single road in the saved map?
I think I remember seeing that you can only browse saved maps, not search or route. Would make sense if those functions occurring in google cloud.

[Q] can't change default navigation app after ver 7.0 maps update

I recently wiped my phone to update to MK2. I noticed that there is no way to set the default navigation app anymore. When I click the "get directions" link from a web browser it takes me right to Google Maps - even if I uninstall and freeze Maps (I'm rooted) it will take me to the Play Store and tell me to install it.
Previously I was able to set my default navigation app to ALK Copilot but it appears that after the awful update to Maps 7.0, which is what prompted me to switch to a paid app there is no way to change it. Before I used to get a popup that would ask which app I want to use and I could pick and even set one as a default, but not anymore. I tried resetting the defaults from app manager but it says Maps doesn't have any defaults set. I even cleared every default on my device...still nothing.
Is there a way to have my phone go to my navigation app of choice rather than Google Maps when I select "get directions" anymore?
ditto
Anyone? I am using a no-data plan so need offline navigation and would love to change the default nav app.

since I'm rooted, I just froze Maps. Then when I selected an address in the browser it asked me which default app I want to use. I think there's also a way to clear it from the "default apps" screen, but it's not called "Maps"...it's something else and I can't remember which one it is.
I've been using ALK Co Pilot which has 100% offline maps and like it WAY more than Maps. It has different "oddball" issues than Maps (for example, Maps would constantly put me on toll roads and carpool lanes even when i told it to avoid them...and you can't permanently set "avoid toll roads" while Co Pilot sometimes doesn't show toll roads and carpool lanes at all...which is still odd, but better).

Google Assistant with Google Maps

Google Assistant used to work seamlessly with Google Maps which began voice navigation promptly. Now assistant will take me to Maps but it only shows the route and no way to begin navigation (much less voice). Anyone with this problem? I've tried this on several ROMs with same result.

If I say a location to Google Assistant a box comes up with choices and selecting directions opens Google Maps. Pressing the car icon starts navigation. Are you trying to use Google assistant to start navigate without any physical interaction with phone?
Yes and it always worked before. All I had to do was ask assistant to take me to a destination. It would open maps and voice directions began.

When did it stop working like that?
Not sure exactly. I flash ROMs constantly and hadn't tried this feature in a while. In fact I can't get voice navigation in Maps even if I open that application directly. If I hit the start button after entering a location it just shows the route but nothing else happens. ?
6P, 7.1.1, nmf26f: this happens to me in my vehicle and i turn the bluetooth connection to my car audio (android 5.1.1) off and she begins to tell me what to do again. ymmv.
Hmmm. Don't know about that. I did notice the "while driving" (works with google maps) toggle on ok google detection is grayed out.
Edit--The problem isn't with GA it is with Google maps. I tried all the things I found on the net (turning off bluetooth, turning off play voice over bluetooth in map settings) still no voice navigation.
When you are navigating there should be a little speaker icon under the magnifying glass. Did you try toggling that? It can mute and unmute voice navigation. If you are on a custom ROM you can also try reinstalling GApps.
Thanks. Tried both of those but still doesn't work. Uninstalled maps and reinstalled also. Still no voice navigation.
