[Q] Light flow battery drain?? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have noticed that light flow wakes up the device lots of times and the ratio of my phones deep sleep and awake is almost 50-50 when light flow is installed... is anyone else facing this problem too??? i really love the app and i wanna use it but cant sacrifice battery for the app..

how do you expect light flow to work if it doesnt wake the device? it has to, to check for notifications. do you use that many notifications?

I know it has to partially wake the device for the notifications but my notifications are not that many and as i said the awake time is too much more ... thats why i asked if its the reason keeping the device awake..

Well only one way to find out. Uninstall it and see if it helps.

Seems like the OP already knows its Lightflow causing the wakes.
Have a read of http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19804068&postcount=8. Its an old post so not sure if it still applies.

In most cases the flash LED driver is small integrated circuit which works apart of the system. This one for Nexus 4 as example: LM3559. After the notification is received system wakes up, then LightFlow reconfigures the LED driver basing on pending notifications (change colors and flash frequency). After that processor can go back to sleep, the LED notifications would show anyway.
Other story when you configure it for multiple color notifications (e.g. Gmail and Calendar event notified). Then system need to wake up every time LED config need to be updated. The power consumption will be much higher.

Camera LED as notification

Is there any way (app, reg hack) to make rear LEDs blink on missed call or message? Front green/amber LED is too small and often hard to see. Battery consumption may be a problem, but rear LED doesn't have to blink as often; quick flash (e.g. 100ms) every 30s would be ok.
The developer of TorchButton might be able to help you.
Search the forums on that name and send him a PM.
the idea is wicked
how come no one ever thought of this
That´d be totally cool. And worth a donation.
"Whoa, your mobile´s cam got insane....! -No, I just got a text "
Can see it being a big battery drain if your not around to dismiss it.
+1 for this
Great idea!
Camera light or maybe light of hardware buttons..? Would be cool!

Light of hardware buttons would be very cool too..
Yes, hardware buttons light would also be nice. PMed TorchButton dev, hope he can help...
+1 to this idea! and the hardware button for the light although making it one of your quick links is fine

I got your PM.
I'm sure this is possible, but it would probably create a battery drain while notifications are busy. This is because the device must be in unattended mode (not in standby, display off). Unattended mode is required as the flashlight and the keypad light don't stay enabled if the device is in standby. Let alone be able to make it blink with an interval.
So, while there is a notification (i.e. missed call or unread text), battery drain would go up like at least 50%.

Thank you for research on the topic, and your reply. Too bad it can't work in standby.

Blink rate

Is there a way to change the blink rate of the notification LED?

I was never able to actually get the blink "rate" to change. The colors all worked but still had the slow blink rate.
Joe
Same thing, led color changes but still blinks slow. Like the new colors though.

Yeah, this thing doesn't have the same control over the flashing LED that a BlackBerry has. Blink rate seems slow and random. Lightflow is good, but it is no BeBuzz. I find frequently that the LED is flashing for seemingly no reason. There are no alerts, but yet the LED is flashing. I really hate the LED on the ATRIX.
Never ever had it flash for no reason. There is always a reason so u should check your settings.
But u are right for sure, Light Flow is no BeBuzz!!!!!

On Light Flow this happened to me when I saw the notification (at least for the Google Talk app) in the notification bar but didn't actually open it up in the Talk app. Light Flow probably still thinks I haven't seen it, because I don't think it can tell if I've seen and cleared the notification in the status bar.
just set your notifications to end blinking at screen-on rather than app.
Never had the problem of it blinking for no reason, i now have the full version and it blinks more often than before and i have enough control of the LED for how i use it tbh
Agreed with above and I think it's draining my batt. Didn't know we had this colors available though!
When I was porting my tilt there was a lib that controlled the blink. I don't remember what level the lib is. It's certainly possible that it is kernal level and we can't touch it yet

I thought it was flashing for no reason once. Turned out this program flashes the led when a mail arrives in the non priority inbox as well (native gmail only flashes for priority inbox for me). It triggers the led then, but naturally no notification. Turned gmail notifications off as a result, still have to see whether it will blink for priority inbox (show week).

LED Notification Light Not Working

Does any else have a issue with their LED Notification Light not working?
No light when charging, or SMS, or Email, Missed Call, Low Battery... never lights up. Almost thought they forgot to install the LED until I used LightFlow to test it. And even then it only works when the screen is off, once the power button is pressed to turn the screen on then LED goes off, even though I set LightFlow to clear notification Manually. (LightFlow was just used to test if the LED was installed/functional.)
Uninstalled LightFlow, send myself a couple test emails and text(from another phone) and There was no LED notification light, just the notification sound.
Really hoping this is a software issues so I don't have to request a replacement device from Google...
Edit/Update: I'm pretty sure this is a software related issue and not hardware, as the LED is there and functions (with the help of 3rd party app, which we should not have to use) - So I'm trying to get a poll here of how many people have issues with the LED Notification light not working. Something to report to Google/Bug Report.

I believe the reason is that the software has not been updated to be completely compatible with 4.2+

Mine doesn't work either. I tried LightFlow and while it did light up the LED for some things, but not all that I selected, it was too faint to see, have to be in total darkness to see it.
The led isn't supposed to flash when the screen is on. Its been this way with every nexus.

Is the Notification Light activated under display settings?
Mine worked, but not really well, I only saw it once when sending myself a test mail. Now I'm using Light Flow, which works nearly perfect (sometimes it doesn't seem to work until I enable the screen for a second and then disable it again)

Pulse notification light is checked
Im having the same problem. My led doesnt seem to come on no matter what. I know it worked out of the box because I have seen it light up with light flow but now im wondering if it quit completely and if I should do an RMA.
Mine has been working fine. It's white for TXT's, green for a lot of other things like FB and whatsapp
Yes the "Pulse notification light" option is checked.
I woke today with 6 New emails, 4 text messages, and 1 missed call... No LED Notification light was on, blinking or doing anything.
There not being a notification light is bugging the heck out me, 'cause I depend on them when my phone is on silent at work so I'm able to know there is a message waiting without having to stop what Im doing to turn the screen on every 5 min.

Try 'Blink'
Try the app 'Blink' very simple and its works for my N4
are you waiting 10 seconds before turning the phone on? Thats how long it takes before it blinks again. Whoever programmed the LED truly hates LED notifications because he made it blink so slowly and dimly that nobody could possibly notice it.

Yup, sat there watching the phone for a good 2-3 min after hearing the Notification sound for new email / text. (screen off)
Not sure if its suppose to or not, but I don't even get a LED Notification light when the phone is charging or charged (have to turn phone on to check if the phone is done charging.) Past devices I've had used the LED to notify of charging/charged.
It's normal that it doesn't glow when charging. I really can recommend Light Flow, then you can customise the notification as you wish (the free version is good, I bought the full version because I need steam support, but for normal use there is no need to buy it)

Ok, so my notification light wouldnt work no matter what. I uninstalled sms popup and now light flow works like it should. I guess the sms popup was somehow blocking light flow from allowing it to activate.
No notification light shows while charging, hence why when you charge the phone when it's off, it shows an animation on the screen. It should for calls, texts, emails, etc. though. Mine works. It even shows blue for facebook and white for texts/emails. Not sure why it wouldn't work. Have you gotten the 4.2.1 update?
Additionally, light flow states in its description that it doesn't work on most lg phones.

Question regarding notifications and the display

On previous phones, when I got a notification, say a text message, the screen would light up and I could tell I had to check my phone. On my N4, when I get a text the phone only vibrates and the screen doesn't light up. Is there a way to have it light up? I tried looking through all the settings but couldn't find anything, and I find it rather odd LG would set their phone up like this.
Also- is there a way so that the pulse notification light goes off more frequently? right now I have to wait about 10 seconds for the next pulse light to go off, making the notification LED rather useless if i miss it the first time.
Thanks.

There's custom ROMs such as CarbonROM, Xylon, ParanoidAndroid, or XenonHD and so many others) that let you configure the colour, blink rate, and application-specificity of your LED indicator. You can also look at Liteflow to customize your LED notification if you'd rather not go to custom ROMs

This. But if you are rooted and having a custom ROM, they integrate it by default. But if it's really waking up the device you want, you might want to try an app called SMS WakeUp. (You can get it from the Play Store)

no charging LED indicator?

is it just me? or does the LED indicator not come on when the device is charging? i turned on pulsing notifcation light in settings and i can see the LED indicator when i receive messages but it doesnt seem like theres any LED light for when i'm charging the phone.

I tried Light Flow but without root it won't work. Not sure if there will be a future update for this, but I certainly hope they add it with a security patch OTA soon.
Update: I tried another app called light manager led and that app work perfectly. If light flow does not work for you, then try light manager.
I've tried both Light Flow and Light Manager, but they both keep activating the Ambient Display every few seconds.
Anyone aware of an LED app that doesn't have these issues?
hi
i also noticed from first day this issue with my phone. I keep googling it to see if it is something wrong with my phone or it is just the way nexus 6p was designed. When I charge my phone (with the phone being completely off) the does not change color neither for "charging" nor for "full charged". It;s annoying as I never know when the phone is full charged in order to disconnect.

This is normal for both Nexus devices. My 5X is exactly the same way out of the box. The LED does not light up to show as connected to charger or fully charged.

I don't think I tried Pro, but if you turn Ambient Display off then it won't affect it anyway. It's when you turn ambient display on and use the programs that it keeps appearing.
Edit: Yep, tested again with the Pro version. Ambient Display keeps coming on every few seconds.

If you are using light flow, disable the option that allows light flow to turn on the screen, I believe its called 'Device Admin' under general settings.
If that doesn't work, then nothing will probably work to allow ambient display and any LED manager to work without conflicting each other, as they both use the same resources.
I also had the issue with no indicator LED while charging on my Nexus 6p with Light Manager & ambient display.
I uninstalled and reinstalled the Light Manager app and now it works again.:good:
Question is now for how long?

Don't forget that you also need to activate the features by going into your settings menu and enabling the ability to have the device use led displays. You can download and use any light manager you want, but until you enable the feature on the device itself, none of the apps will work.
As of this post here are the instructions for enabling the led light display to work:
1. Go to settings
2. Select the Notifications settings
3. Tap the gear (settings) icon in the upper right corner.
4. Enable "pulse notification light"
5. Open the light manager app of your choice (I prefer light manager - LED settings)
6. Set the app to your preference
7. Reboot device
8. Profit
Hope this helps resolve any issues you have
