Good Afternoon,
I am interested in getting the Nexus 5 which supposedly is being unveiled on August 7 and in stores October 20. Sadly im sure it wont go to verizon right away but i hope it doesnt take long. How is the software support for the 4?
I come from HTC Thunderbolt where the support lagged for years before finally releasing ICS in February of 2013, 1 month short of 2 years old. I am hoping the support for this phone and forum is high?
Thanks for replying...
The software support is what you would expect from Google... there haven't been many Android releases since the release of the Nexus 4 but it got the previous updates right away, and it's expected to be the same for the next few releases at LEAST.
However why do you think the Nexus 5 will be on Verizon at all seeing as the Nexus 4 isn't?

verizon ruined their chances with the way they handled the galaxy nexus. no nexus should be treated like verizon treated the galaxy nexus
oh, and are you sure that you didnt mean motorola x, instead of the nexus 5??

Well the phone should have CDMA capabilities with the qualcomm 800 so i guess im hoping for it to come to verizon. They are saying the LG G2 is the Nexus 5. Its still not confirmed but it looks pretty. I guess we get to know more on August 7th.
Moto X is just an Iphone competitor phone. I dont want that. Qualcomm 800 is what i have been holding out for. Sad none of the new droids got it, the x wont have it so my next phone will be between the Note 3 (kinda big but i can deal with it), HTC T6 (i wont get it i just thought id mention) or LG G2 (possibly known to be the Nexus 5). Any thoughts?
Btw this post was originally just to find out ROM support but i like the additional feedback!

Nexus and Google Edition device dont get CDMA support due to the closed sourced telephone files. There have been no positive rumors of even a new nexus coming this year at all. If there was it would have most likely been released today with the new nexus tablet.

Ever since I heard the first rumor earlier this year of the Nexus Prime (which morphed into what is today the Galaxy Nexus), I've been drooling. When the device was officially rolled out several weeks back, I decided I was going to buy the unlocked pentaband version as soon as possible.
Now I find myself trying to get those thoughts out of my head. For one, the phone still isn't available in the US, and buying one from overseas runs around $700 minimum, including all costs (the Nexus S at Best Buy last December, by comparison, was only $550 IIRC). Secondly, I'm pretty disgusted by what I view as a botched rollout of the device. It was announced a month ago, and there's still no official information on pricing, availability, or carriers. Compare that to an Apple rollout (a company whose products I greatly dislike, BTW), where the official rollout tells you pretty much everything you'd want to know in order to make a buying decision. Finally, despite some of the awesome specs of the Galaxy Nexus (most notably 720p resolution), I think the main draw is still ICS, which I'm hopeful will come to the Nexus S in an official and working form very shortly.
So, I think if I can get my hands on a bug-free ICS by the end of the year, I'll be satisfied to keep the Nexus S for at least another six months. I really like the Nexus S, and it still can comfortably handle anything I throw at it.
I am in the same boat. Very disappointed in the galaxy nexus. Hardware is so-so and the roll out is pathetic. No news of a tmo version and it's been announced a while ago. If this doesn't sell for under $600 I will just keep my nexus s and hope they get the next nexus right this time. I'm slowly losing faith in the nexus line. Google allowed verizon to molest it a little and I find it just plain less appealing now. I loved the idea of having a somewhat special Android when I owned the nexus one and now nexus s. But I feel google is slowly merging the nexus into the melting pot of android phones. I wanted something that really stands out and always stands out.

Another gripe is that I personally have never met or seen anybody with a nexus phone. After the galaxy nexus I feel I may start bumping into people who own one. And to make matters worse, it will probably be someone who has no idea what it is. And will call it their "Droid" phone. Maybe I loved the nexus line a little too much. : (

Never saw another nexus one in person until I lived in Singapore, I saw two the first month I lived there! When the nexus s came out I ordered that bastard immediately and had it shipped to my mom and she shipped it to me. I wanted to be alone in owning a Nexus phone again.

All good points, and I fully agree. Maybe Verizon is giving Google some too-hard-to-resist incentives? Otherwise, I can't imagine why Google would have abandoned the "buy-an-unlocked-GSM-phone" concept.

Now that you mention it, in the 11 months I've had my Nexus S, I've never seen anybody with a Nexus phone, either. I have, though, been asked several times when people see my phone, "What kind of iPhone is that?"

I was under the impression that Verizon has installed a bunch of proprietary Verizon apps (bloatware) on the Galaxy Nexus. Is this not true? Also, isn't the phone adorned with Verizon badging?

I was in the same line of thinking as the OP. I was going to alternate years: this year tablet; next year phone. I had to go in to Three to renew my contract and there the GN was on display so naturally I play with it. I couldn't resist. I had a free upgrade so I said GN please. Now I have a NS that's not being used anymore. Maybe I'll give it to the wife? Damn why did Three need to have it on display? Now I'm in a two year contract instead of sum only all you can eat data. Though I do have all you can eat for the GN.

I have to force myself to be satisfied with a two-year phone replacement cycle. Getting the new iPhone every year when I was with AT&T spoiled me; now I feel like my phone is out-of-date in three months (and with the hardware cycle the way it is now, it probably is!).
I am going to try to hold on to my Nexus S until the next gen Nexus is released (after Nexus Galaxy).
I am thinking about getting the nexus 4, I have a samsugn galaxy s2 right now. My contract gets renewed in december for tmobile, you guys think any new amazing phones will be out by then? if so which? Maybe the s4?
December?? Defff newer and better phones will be out by then that's almost a year...
The s4 will be out by summer and possibly the nexus five by end of year??
But whose gonna wait that long and be stuck with an s2 lol
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
^Nothing's wrong with the S2. It's still more than adequate for all daily tasks and handles gaming fairly well.
I for one will be keeping to the nexus brand from now on. Coming from Samsung's and HTCs which have all had there faults, I've yet to find one with this device.
But I suppose it all comes down to what you prefer in device.
Personally if I was you I'd wait till the end of the year because newer phones will definitely be out. But if you can't wait, get the Nexus 4!

I had a Skyrocket prior to my Nexus 4 and I thought it was a good phone, then I when I got the Nexus 4 I was blasted with the speed and response but also because it had JB installed. After I installed JB on the Skyrocket I thought it was pretty snappy as well. That being said a dual core phone should still suffice your needs for now.
Q2/Q3 and after Google IO you will start seeing lotta phones coming out, based on Snapdragon 800, Tegra 4 and Exynos 5 Octa etc... There may be a Google X phone and then theres also the S4.
But even if you go ahead with the Nexus 4 its still a fast phone that will last you a while, when Key Lime Pie gets out it'll be even better. :good:
I had a Galaxy S2 before my Nexus 4, but by December the new Nexus will be out. I also saw that there are already a couple 4.2.2 roms for that phone! Developer support still seems pretty strong, and it's still a high end phone. If you can I would try to wait and just keep a good rom on it.

Coming from the sg2 as well, and have the death of the at&t weird sleep mode of death and just ordered the Nexus 4 last night contract is up in May/June but just going to switch sim card out and use the nexus 4 till something better comes along, if you have $300+ I feel that it is a big jump from the sg2 to the nexus 4, plus you will always have the latest android version, unlike the super delayed updates from att and samsung
Simple question... I'm planing to buy three Nexus 4 devices... one for my mom, one for my wife and one for me... and that's a lot of money!
So... is it safe to buy the Nexus 4 right now or would you guys wait until May to see if they release the rumored Nexus 5?

It's a nexus device so it is going to keep getting software updates for a while. If the hardware meets your needs then it is safe. If you have to have something new you will always be waiting.
Go try one out and see if you like it.
Don't see a nexus 5 coming out in may. A new nexus 7 yes but a nexus 5 probably not, since 5" screens are a premium at the moment. So in Sept/Oct we should see a new Nexus 4. It will be hard to keep giving the phone the new number. Since 2 years after the 5 it would be the nexus 7.
I think Google is going to just do variations on the numbers now.
As for the current N4 go for it. It's a great phone. It will be supported for quite a while.

Mine finally arrived just last week--moving up from a GNex and I couldn't be happier. By all means go for it unless you want to wait for an S4, which I wouldn't It's perfect for standard phone use(GNow, Phone/SMS, Chrome, Twitter etc) and from what I hear around the forums it's top-notch for gaming as well if that's your thing, not to mention it's a joy to look at

There are a lot rumors about a new nexus device at the next google I/O.
If nexus 5 is announced, you probably won't see it until late summer or early fall, maybe even winter (product refresh cycles have been picking up though).
There could be an update to the current nexus 4. The most probable update is adding a LTE modem to the current version and perhaps bump the storage up to 32GB.
My guess is that an updated nexus 4 will come out late summer/early fall, and a new nexus device in the winter (around December), based on past google product release cycles.
So unless you really need that LTE, I would say go for the nexus 4 now.
I see.
Well... I gues I will order them now before they upgrade to LTE in the future. The carrier I'm planning to use is HSPA+ only...
Theoritcally... could they add LTE and HSPA+ together?

I would LOVE to have the X phone having such great rumored specs but I already own a N4. I might sell it later on and get the (se)X phone
Get the phones and if by the grace of God they release a new one sell only yours and replace it if you need to( how it makes sense to me). I'm giving my gf my nexus 7 when the new one comes out. Nexus 4 came out in November with shortages till very recently. Google could lose some respect if releasing a new phone this soon, at least from me because I've only had a nexus 4 1 month.

I don't think there will be a new nexus phone announced at I 0 and I don't even think this supposed x phone will be released then either...maybe a new nexus 7 and possibly an lte nexus 4 or an upgraded storage capacity like they did with the nexus 7 when the 4 and 10 came out but that's it...they usually drop a new phone around Nov...either way this is a great phone if you want it get it.

I'd even wait another month or two after the Nexus 5 is released before buying it. We all know how terrible Google is at releasing new products properly. Avoid the headache, buy the N4 now, and enjoy it till next January or February. Then buy the N5. That's my plan this time around.

Nexus 4 was so hot at the beginning that the phone could of had WAY more sales if it didn't have the delays on their phone.
You want a new phone now? Just get the N4. Don't let the "there's an N5 coming out later" mentality influence you, unless you know for sure it'll come out at the same price and is like 2 weeks later at the most .
There are diminishing returns on these upgraded hardware. More cores and Ghz won't do anything noticeable for apps compared to even the Galaxy Nexus which is nearing 2 years old. If I had bought the GNex last year, I probably would hang on to it for 2-3 years. I only switched from my previous phone because it never got updates and was buggy.

I switched from Galaxy Nexus to Nexus 4 to give my Galaxy Nexus to a family member who was still using a Galaxy S1
but yeah... Galaxy Nexus -> Nexus 4 wasnt that much of a change. Especially when no significant Android versions came out (when compared to Nexus S > Galaxy Nexus). 2.3 to 4.0.X WAS HUGE.
Get the N4 for now...then sell it when ever the N5 arrives.
Wait for the Nexus 6, I hear that's going to be even better ...

and this is google edtion phone? not nexus phone?

You're right about Google not wanting to piss off the other mfr's. They do not want to give Motorola any unfair advantages.
This is probably going to be relatively Vanilla in its release, as Google's Larry Page and Sergey Brin have hinted that much. However, it will not be the Nexus 5, as they are calling it the Moto X. Read this: http://www.ibtimes.com/moto-x-motor...nexus-5-will-be-made-usa-release-date-1283813
Also, they are saying the phone will be very competitively priced, and given the proper factory, Americans can make a hell of a better device than a Chinese person treated like a slave can. Happier people work better. Just ask any rich Chinese, they refuse to buy things manufactured in their home country.

Moto X Specs
The Moto X may have mid-range specs, but don't some devices like the iPhone or Galaxy S3 and S4 variants have mid-range specs too? It's the OS that makes the phone run smooth, not necessarily the specs it has. iOS and Touchwiz are perfect examples of this. I have never heard of a Touchwiz device or an iPhone (current generations) that run slow with their mid-range specs. Also, project butter should speed things up right? I think people are immediately counting out a phone based on specs not on usability or experience with the device. It's way to early to tell considering official specs haven't been dropped yet.
Looks are OK, but features needs to be kick a**
All I care about is the screen being bigger than 4.5, and a battery with at least 2500mah... I'm using a GS2 Epic with a dual core CPU, running 4.1 JB... It runs just fine... This dual core will be significantly more powerful than my GS2, and close if not more powerful than the GS3 CPU... And updates, updates, updates... Can't forget about the updates...
