[SOLVED] [temp. fix] IMEI Null , Unknown Baseband
Confirmed working with i337 and i337m
Original problem:
Hi
I have received an i337 s4 with imei nul/nul and with no baseband (unknown) - see attached pics.
The user stated that he played with some menu from Samsung secret codes.
It's on stock recovery, download mode doesn't show any flash counters, binary and sys status as 'official' and write protection 'enabled'
Also the home screen shows a certain menu with a notification 'update device information' see attached pic.
I have done a factory rest via stock recovery, still showing the same issues.
How can I solve this hopefully?
update SOLVED:
Thanks to Colonel Sander aka Quasimodem for all the help, here and over hangout.
After having problems with QPST/ EFS pro etc, in repairing, I flashed his efs.img , this removed the home screen error notice and the phone was working normal - still with IMEI = null / null and baseband = unknown
Today he made a flashable zip, which helped me fully flash his efs,
package_extract_file("flash_image", "/tmp/flash_image");
set_perm(0, 0, 0777, "/tmp/flash_image");
ui_print("Installing EFS...");
assert(package_extract_file("efs.img", "/tmp/efs.img"),
run_program("/tmp/flash_image", "/dev/block/mmcblk0p10", "/tmp/efs.img"),
assert(package_extract_file("m9kefs1.img", "/tmp/m9kefs1.img"),
run_program("/tmp/flash_image", "/dev/block/mmcblk0p13", "/tmp/m9kefs1.img"),
assert(package_extract_file("m9kefs2.img", "/tmp/m9kefs2.img"),
run_program("/tmp/flash_image", "/dev/block/mmcblk0p14", "/tmp/m9kefs2.img"),
assert(package_extract_file("m9kefs3.img", "/tmp/m9kefs3.img"),
run_program("/tmp/flash_image", "/dev/block/mmcblk0p15", "/tmp/m9kefs3.img"),
delete("/tmp/efs.img"));
delete("/tmp/m9kefs1.img"));
delete("/tmp/m9kefs2.img"));
delete("/tmp/m9kefs3.img"));
delete("/tmp/flash_image");
After the flash I got back my baseband :victory:
My IMEI has changed from null / null to a 0 / 00 this is not a problem over here, and my network is fully active and amazingly still UNLOCKED.
I would hopefully inject my original IMEI with Z3X box service if I couldn't repair over the QPST and other similar softwares.
Thanks all.
UPDATE:
I have added the EFS zip, this works confirm with i337 and i337m
But this does NOT work with i9505 (I would not advice to flash it on i9500)
Follow all the procedures before going for a flash.
Thanks to @Quasimodem for the original zip.
UPDATE Feb 24 2014: HOW TO RECOVER IMEI
Unfortunately I do not have the phone myself now, but here is success report of recoveing IMEI after flashing this EFS:
Ziida said:
Thanks! Flashing through TWRP didn't do it for me so I installed CWM tonight based on your suggestion and it's worked! My baseband became readable and my IMEI went from "null / null" to "0 / 00"
To anyone else coming into this thread: CWM was a bit of a hassle to install, so I had to use this guide (mind their typos...).
Anyhow, the most exciting part is after flashing the good Captain's EFS file my phone was recognized by QPST again!! I went ahead and flashed the AWS .qcn file from this thread, and now my IMEI number has returned!
I hope you have similar luck, dogmatism!

edit: removed ZIP, as it carries imei number of the original provider after flashing AWS .qcn

I have a backup of my EFS, it may be possible to Hex edit it, and change the IMEI to yours, then manually insert the EFS files with ADB or Terminal Emulator

Also, check out this guy, he can remotely repair it:

Yes pm me your imei and I'll try to edit my efs files... I'll pm you an untouched copy too if you want to have a crack at it...
check pm.
I have also installed stock ROM. but it is as if nothing changed. :what:
I wonder if I should flash a custom recovery and format the system manually and then Odin flash the stock ROM.

That's not going to do anything for this particular issue. I'm about to zip up my backup and send it your way, and dig around inside the files myself. This is repairable somehow.

I can PM you my backup if you want to look too.
I have:
efs.img
m9kefs1.img
m9kefs2.img
m9kefs3.img
I will watch this for awhile, and see what happens. Just trying to figure out what you guys are trying to accomplish...carry on.
My suggestion is be careful with IMEI as if you let someone have your #, and at any point that person plugs in that # in his device and hits the network, you will get both devices blacklisted from the carrier. I am hoping you guys know this.
i have to first root then. give me some time.
I think you sent your efs via dropbox link, i have it downloaded already thanks.

Yep... It was mainly just a show of good will, and to be able to mess around with an untouched EFS backup. I'm having issues finding the IMEI in any of those files.

Uhm. NO. Samsung does not blacklist any IMEI's just because we are rooting/flashing our handsets.
A blacklisted IMEI will not be null/null, a blacklisted IMEI will be the original IMEI.
This is some kind of software fault (Or ofcause HW)
Try to reboot into recovery, do you get failed to mount /EFS?
Best regards

That instruction is for T-Mobile Note 3.
On Note 3 International version the partitions may be different, so doing that may mess up with partitions and may brick the device.
Be careful.

Yes, but the EFS partition may be different.
In that instruction, I see the EFS partition is mmcblk0p12.
But on my Note 3 N9005, the EFS partition is mmcblk0p11.
So just a warning.

I believe that updating from 4.3 to 4.4.2 will not change the partition structure.
The partition structure is device-dependence, and vary from model to model (N900T vs N9005).
@ OP: you can follow that instruction, but you may need to replace its efs partition (mmcblk0p12) to your efs partition (mmcblk0p11, if your device is N9005 international version, as mine).

Enable USB debugging, connect your phone to the computer.
Install adb using the 15 second adb installer (Google it) and in the directory adb is installed in, hold down shift then right click on a blank area, click on Open command window here, then type adb start.

Hey Guys!
Firstly, I know this same thread has been made for other devices. Most of which have solutions, but these do not work for me. I really need your help with my problem!
The Problem: My GN3 has lost its IMEI, the EFS folder might have gotten corrupt somehow. But by a stroke of bad luck, the IMEI turned to unknown and no methods seem to solve this.
Thus far I have tried changing the IMEI with NV Tools and EFS Pro. None of which work, I tried generating a new file and flashing it on, that did also not help.
It was stock 4.4.2 Samsung, rooted. We sent it in to a service center, but since Knox now says 0x1 they want to charge us R3500 (~$300) to repair it.
Upon inspection, I noticed from my EFS folder that all files starting with 'nv' was gone. SO I copied these from my rooted Note 2 and placed them in the folder. Idea being that I could just change the IMEI using NV Tools, as it didn't work otherwise. This however did not work.
The only sollution I can think of, would be for someone to make a backup (using TWRP or CWM) of their EFS folder, then for me to restore it and then change the IMEI with NV Tools.
I promise I did not steal this phone, and it is not blacklisted or anything. Ill send any who might help me a picture of the IMEI on the back of the phone + the original box and the receipt if they doubt me.
I DON'T WANT YOUR IMEI NUMBER, but I need a full Note 3 EFS folder with the original files, so I can attempt to fix mine.
If anyone has a different solution I'm all ears, and up for anything.

Ok, what I found out as a solution was to delete EFS folder. Android will rebuild it! BUT: My EFS and Baseband are still gone. I reflashed stock (again) using Odin. No Dice. My NV_DATA, NV_CORE ect files are gone!
And IMEI isnt coming back.
If anyone has a spare EFS backup, or a script or something that i can flash to make my device have those files again I would appreciate it very much.

The following might be uotdated but no harm to try anyway(Can't copy the link so i copied everything)
1. Install Stock firmware via Odin, then re-run auto-root (to regain root of course)*
2. Install TWRP 2.6.3.2 via odin, reboot to recovery.
3. Do an "adb shell" when phone is in recovery mode to run commands via TWRP.
From the ADB shell: Wiped the EFS partition with the following command:
mke2fs /dev/block/mmcblk0p12*
mkdir /efs
mount -t ext4 /dev/block/mmcblk0p12 /efs
(the last two commands probably did nothing, but thats what I did anyway)
Do a factory reset, reboot system

I honestly can't remember, I think I just flashed TWRP and wiped the partitions he said to wipe. Then did the reboot.
Sorry for my lack of help, but I really can't remember the exact steps.

Sorry @Hitman7987 but I'm new here but had the exact same problem you did.
I do not really understand the solution Rosli gave though. Could you help me out: point me to a post or explain here
What is an "adb shell" and how does one "do it"?
Thanks

To flash a firmware or custom recovery:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2704363
The rest are quite straight forward
Hey, I started flashing custom ROMs to my S4 (GT-i9506) about three months ago and everything was okay, but just recently I tried to return to my stock i9506 4.4.2 ROM and i succeeded in doing so, but afterwards I noticed that my S4 wasn't recognising my SIM.
At first I assumed it was a faulty SIM card (my SIM had multiple scratches on it), so I bought a new SIM card and yet the problem persisted. I tried to make calls and etc but my phone retuned an error stating, "Mobile network not available". I decided to check my settings and I noticed that my Baseband Version was labelled as "unkown".
After seeing this I searched for solutions online and came upon S4 service codes, I used the "*#06#" code and it returned a message saying "IMEI... null/null". Yet again I searched for a solution and came upon none to help me
I soon found out that my problem had something to do with the EFS parition in my phone. I re-rooted and installed ES File Explorer and opened up my EFS folder. In her everything looked ordinary, but then I noticed that my .nv_data file was missing, which, if i remember correctly, is responsible for important functions such as the IMEI and Baseband
I tried every solution I could find online and nothing fixed my issue - I'm only writing this as it's the only option which doesn't require me to go to my local Samsung Experience Store.
TL;DR
My GT-i9506 doesn't know its own IMEI and Baseband version and I'm all out of solutions at this point.
Am I better off going to the Samsung Store?

IMEI no longer inhabits the EFS folder, so you're not missing anything. Flash the modem for your ROM again through Odin and see if that corrects the issue. If it does, use Wanam's EFS Backup to properly backup the hidden partitions where the IMEI is now stored.
Flash the latest stock lollipop rom for your device and you will be fine. Sounds to me you were on Lollipop stock and you downgraded to Kitkat.

So then where is the IMEI stored? I'd just like to know for future purposes
The modem didn't fix it

Tried this too, but failed also
I don't know which of the hidden partitions the IMEI is stored in. I only know where it's not, and that's not in the EFS folder. However, based on the partition names, the IMEI is likely stored in any or all of the following partitions: m9kefs1, m9kefs2, m9kefs3. While unlikely, it could also be stored in the following partitions: modemst1, modemst2.

Would it be possible to mount any of those partitions?

You can try it, but I doubt you'll find anything human readable within them.

I flashed the stock I9506XXDOA6 NEE ROM in Odin once more but my IMEI remained null.
So I decided to extract the modem.bin after installing the Lollipop ROM and it too didn't work

Hi, I used to use Optimus G, it has IMEI in m9efs* and Modem in modem, modemst*. I never had IMEI problems but on S4 it is really scary. Will backing up EFS in TWRP, manually dd'ing EFS, modemst*, m9kefs* block10 make me stay on safe side?

Just use Wanam's EFS Backup tool. It backs up all those partitions, so no need to run commands in a terminal.

Hello,
I have One plus 2 64 Gb its IMEI is 0
i have tried many roms Still its 0
also Tried to change imei using QPST, efs Pro, cdma tool, whenever i write its showing NV ITEMS Read Only
i have successfully installed diag and normal drivers.
and device is showing in under port tab.
please help me to remove that write protection
( I Dont Have any EFS Backup)
No networks are coming
Please Help
(Sorry For Worst English ):angel:
Just use the ordinary factory restore using the factory qualcomm tool from the "how to factory restore my phone" thread. That way your phone should be back to the state it came in.
Still its showing 0
is There any kernel that removed write protection from nv items? I want cmto change the imei permently with Original One
or xposed installer will change the whole Imei or just masks?

i think QPST configuration works, if its read only there is some other error
also a twrp backup of efs from some other phone will maybe fix it (dont ask for it)
Have you tried entering fastboot mode and doing a modemst erase? That fixed one of my IMEI numbers some time ago when I had the same problem that you detail. More info: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=65712557&postcount=3
i have used fastboot to earse modemst files
but it worked not fully whenever i reboot 1st imei is 0 and second one is shown again after i reboot first will show second one is 0
tired of this is there any way to edit nv items write protection by editing kernel?
even i have flashed one of my friends efs backup but the problem is still continued

Contact OnePlus support and then tell us the solution they gave you.

After using fastboot erase command on modemst1 & modemst2,
My OP2's both sim slots stopped working,
So I flashed new+modem.zip by benschhold.
Which made sim-slot-1, work again !
But sadly, sim-slot-2 shows as "0", when checking through *#06#.
If somebody knows, how to write IMEI on OP2,
let me know.
bump..same problem
By bit of searching i've Found That firmware part is readonly, its not accepting any permission related read and Write. is there any way to rewrite it.?
or by modding kernel can we remove write protection? reply asap.

Which one OP2?
Any solution, for writing IMEI#2 for my OnePlus 2 ?
Phone is out of warranty,
No efs backup.
Qualcomm restore tool, didn't fix this problem either.
I know this probably won't help here BC I don't think Color OS was made for the OPO2. But I had this exact problem with my OP One... Saw on XDA where someone said to flash ColorOS and it fixed the problem. I have no idea why this would work but it did.
---------- Post added at 08:40 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:39 AM ----------
Is it possible that flashing Hydrogen OS could have the same effect on the OP2?
there is a usb dongle that can fix this thing, but i'm not too sure whether it can fix imei2 for our op2 or not
if someone reported works, i'm willing to buy this dongle also rather than use the phone faced the problem random reboot because of no imei2.
