I hate to do this, but I am looking for a stock style rom for the N4 with the following
root
deodex
Facebook contacts Sync
Enhanced Quick Settings
Enhanced Power Menu
Patched Google Wallet (to allow root)
t9 dialer
I'm happy putting this together myself, but to speed things along does anyone have links/suggestions on where to get the above features or a ROM with all the above?
I get my N4 today if shipping works well from TNT so hope to have this flashed tonight and have loads on at work so this is why I am posting a Q&A for help locating this
All very good Features i would like to see in a "Stock"-Android ROM. :good:
the wallet apk is floating around here somewheres. there is also an unsupported gapps with it.
t9 dialer. i just noticed one with it the other day. i thing it was xylon or codefirex.
i dont do facebook. but everything else you mentioned should be in just about any rom. cm10.1 seems to be the one rom around here that is closets to stock.

I wondered between that and MCR to be honest - I thought MCR might actually be slightly closer to stock

i started thinking... what makes a minimal rom? i have never used a rom that was considered 'minimal' so questions are coming up. as more and more time goes by would the rom not get further and further away from stock? or do they stop adding features and only update as code for what they have is further optimized? i guess what im saying is you could always try to hunt down a rom that started with all of the features you are looking for. then flash an early build of that before they loaded it down with stuff you dont want.

That's a good question. Never thought it about that way. I guess it's rom that stays relatively close to stock without pushing out all these features coming out of aokp and cm. Just the minimal additional features that the ROM creator feels necessary.
I personally don't see a reason for these roms and why some people must stick to stockish custom roms. Nowadays all roms are fast that you can barely tell the difference. The difference comes from the kernel in my opinion.
I just don't want to use a rom that barely gets updated because I'm addicted to flashing stuff and without garbage code wasting space on my phone with unnecessary apps like performance control when I already have a app to use for controlling the cpu frequency etc. Things like that.
I guess my definition of minimal is very little tweaks just enough to tease our temptations without being too disappointed. It's defined differently by all

I'm looking for a rom that I only need to think about flashing every few months really - want something ultra stable (so stock like as that should be the most stable rom )
just wanted a few nicer features thrown in without all the clutter of CM/AKOP
Paranoid android is closer to stock than CM/AOKP if you ignore the tablet settings. It's more about having a beautiful UI and near stock interface.

lol what are you talking about. all ROMs for N4 look like a stock interface, they're all built upon the Holo theme introduced in ICS.
the whole Paranoid Android is all about changing DPI and integrating the status bar on the bottom with the nav bars instead of having a status bar up on top.

That's not a definition of a "minimal" ROM then. You're looking for a stable ROM. At this date, I feel that every ROM is stable and it's practically up to you on what kind of additional features you want with your phone. That's all it really comes down to.
New ROM versions come out because they want to put out newer features (yes they are stable). No one forces you to update them, you can flash it once and leave it. When you want to, you can dirty flash up upon it.
If you don't want to update your ROM then why did you flash custom ROMs in the first place?

Root: All ROMs have it
Deodex: All ROMs come deodexed
Enhanced Quick Settings: most ROMs has this. some ROMs use tiles only. CM10.1 has both
Enhanced Power Menu: most ROMs have this.
Google Wallet: no such thing as patched google wallet. google wallet from the play store works fine with root.
t9 dialer: most roms have this again.

it all comes down to YOU as an individual going to the forum and looking at your options. they're all fantastic choices and all stable roms. read the last couple of pages for feedback. its not that hard man. its like you asking the question, "what is the most minimal house" you want something stable... each rom has its own uniqueness, its up to you to decide what you want.
with my biasm, id go towards cyanogenmod10.1 + franco kernel for the cleanest code and has everything i want.
Try out maddogin's stock ROM, he built it from stock ROM and he added few things on it, such as reboot, battery icon changer, theming and stuff. So that's basically stock ROM with few added extras. Maybe u could make a request on his forum about Facebook sync etc. It is in nexus 4 original development.

Possibly because I came from a HTC world where ROMs (non-stock) would be built to aim towards AOSP based roms and would come with instabilities.
All ROMs do come deodexed, but some have options for odex too - I guess it was a bit silly really to put deodex and root on the list, but to be honest it was a copy and paste from a conversation I was having saying what I wanted to gain from my Nexus 4 in addition to stock
EQS and EPM are probably the _first_ things a dev/modder does with a ROM - to be honest I don't know why Google don't add this in to stock. Same with t9 dailer - again coming from a htc where it was built in to their stock roms I got used to it.
In the end I just flashed MCR because it has most features out the box (missing t9 dialer and facebook sync unless you go premium) and it'll do for now.
i'll reconsider again in a few months when I have had time to settle in and life has calmed down over the xmas rush.
I used to flash once per month but I found I dont have that much free time recently so thats my reasoning behind saying that I was looking for something stable that I can leave alone for a few months
I have seen threads pertaining to apk's from specific roms to specific roms, but not one like I'm thinking. Because a lot of roms are AOSP based, are the apk's therein able to be installed/restored to another AOSP rom? i.e. from AOKP to the GE roms floating around. Or from TW based to TW based. What determines the compatibility? I'm sorry if this is a noob question, but I am humbly that.
Thanks
What is it going to hurt to push a apk from a different source into the rom you are running, if it does not work it will just f/c. That's all the testing you need.
Okay. Well this is what I did, I pulled the MMS.apks from a few Roms on carrier, kernel, and JB. One of them ran with SOME on the menu options I was looking for. However, the other one which I know has what I'm looking for in it installed and then FC. I tried fixing the permissions as well as a few other things.
Right direction?

You are in the right direction, now I didn't mean they all would work, some will though, I hunted and pecked until I found ones that I could use, and they work.
Along the way I found a few that refused to cooperate with what I wanted. You're ok.

One thing to keep in mind regarding system APKs, many depend on the framework found on the phone. APK's based on touchwiz for example may not work properly on an ASOP based ROM. For example, you can't take the stock samsung MMS app and port it to cyanogenmod and expect it to work. needless to say, this also means you can't take an MMS app from an HTC phone (using sense UI) and expect it to work in a touchwiz based rom.
System APK's also often require additional libraries to work. If you take just the camera APK from touchwiz and use it on a google edition (the frameworks match) the camera will still not work. If you take all the system libraries needed for that app, it will work (the samsung camera app has been successfully ported to the google edition).

here is one of the major threads going on regarding google edition and bringing in pure touchwiz features. I've not done it personally so i can only go by what's been reported.
For example, the camera, look at this post:

i have had my s4 for a while and originally had revolt on it, it was good but had a lot of small bugs that annoyed me. now im running liquidsmooth and its been my driver for a long time. its starting to get buggy on me and im bored of it. i have been away for some time so help me figure out what i want to do now please!
do i need to update MDL to MD9?
im running TWRP recovery, any significant reason to switch to CWM or Philz?
Is there any inverted gapps available?
is there any themed swype available?
im thinking of going with PAC rom as it seems it has the most of everything in one. any feedback or bad experiences with this rom?
if i go with pac to you recommend switching kernels? like chronic kernel or anything? or is stock on there good?
do any roms have the active notification screen like the moto x yet?
do any ASOP roms have a working IR blaster so i can use a tv remote?
also for myboy free (GBA emu) if i back it up with TB will it also save the game saves? game saves are not in the app but through the actual game.
SORRY FOR ALL THE QUESTIONS!!! THANKS

Perhaps if you would possibly ask one question at a time you might have better luck!
To answer all the questions you are asking in an accurate helpful way would take an
hour at least not even counting the time it takes to do a little research.
Good luck!

Hi.
In terms of the recovery method, it's all a matter of preferance really. I'm personally using PhilZ CWM currently and have never had the need to switch. The only difference I can recall is that CWM has touch capabilities whereas TWRP has the ability to queue zips.
In my experience with PACman ROM, while I can't speak for everyone, it seemed to have a few problems such as reboots and bugs like autobrightness freezing the phone for a little bit. I'm now on paranoidandroid, and it appears to be much more stable than PACman. Furthermore, cyanogenmod also seems to be pretty stable (assuming you're sticking to the AOSP ROMS).
Again, with the choice of kernels, it's all a matter of preference. Each one is different and there is no one kernel that is best for everyone. So I recommend trying different ones and reading up on which each offers. Be careful that not all kernels are supported for each ROM.
I'm not entirely sure what you mean by active notification screens, but paranoidandroid and PACman have something called halo which makes notifications similar to Facebook chat heads, where notifications can be opened up in smaller sized windows.
As for the GBA emulator, I just restored one using titanium backup so I'll check for you when I get home, better not have been lost was halfway through pokemon firered!
Edit: GBA emulator save was backed up by titanium, just make sure you backup both app plus data

What I would like to see are some features I know from cyanogenmod:
Close apps with long press back key
Customizable pull down menu
Screenshots via on/off menu
Maybe a better music player
I have lots of ideas
Very interested! How about a dark theme? All black backgrounds instead of the ugly touchwiz white???????????
Its realy not that easy to change from wihte to black BG. Also tekst switch needed.and the fun part comes now...basicly for best result needed for ALL systemapps.

A fully debloated kk-Rom was great with a good tweaked Kernel with OC/UV-features. Than the ability to chance the screen-resolution to fullHD for better gaming-performance like in SDBAGS Cromi-X Rom for Asus tf701t. ES File-Explorer, Xposed Framework as system apps. Than the old webkit-android-browser(aosp) with bookmark-sync, like in Scroslers Clean-Rom.
And I think there is a lot more to make KK better.

- Should I wait for the official ROM?

For me it's dirty unicorns. It's really stable and the latest weekly has the camera running superb for me so far with Snapchat and the inbuilt camera app. Also has the most kernel customizations out of every 7.1.1 custom ROM. Highly recommend you to try it out and see for yourself since ROMs are based on personal preference.
And I would recommend: next time ask such questions in the Q&A section or even general section but NEVER in android development section.

Don't take this the wrong way since it is a sincere question. Why not in a developer thread? I have been a member of the CM11 thread until the project ended and it was a developer thread, the ONLY place you could get up to the minute, real help for the custom rom. It was a developer thread especially made for this rom.

Because the question is generic. Fur the most part the development sections should be geared toward resolving issues with ROMs and/or what features the ROM may need improvement on. Asking what people think is the most stable ROM or what not sure not contribute to development.

That is a good answer. No one should be in developer threads asking what is the best rom, etc. But to join a rom specific developer thread is a good place to post rom questions for this device. We need *some place* to discuss this and IMHO, the developer threads are the best, where you get the best answers, and most serious places to get answers. With that in mind, one has to behave accordingly. I.e.: No clowning around for best rom, best games, pokemon, or any other out of place questions or comments. You have earned your Thanks. Thanks!
EDIT: "Generic" question, that is the significant part I missed. There are plenty of places to discuss generic rom questions but not in a developer thread. For specific questions, I would imagine there are threads for that. My CM11 thread was quite specific so the Q&A was most welcome there. :good:

I have read through them all. There is no sufficient information. Everyone is like thank you so much for this without saying any issues, so after installation I found everything was broken.
When u ask also people come and say "why don't u try it for urself?" What sort of theory is that? last time all ROMs used to have a section at least for bug list of features that doesn't work, but none of the new ROMs have that. Its like we have to take a medicine without knowing the side effects to know only about them after trying it.

Aicp April nightlies have been amazing, huge upgrade over previous Roms for me, including previous versions of AICP itself. Battery life is poor currently, but everything is buttery smooth and snappy (v4a, Substratum, pixel launcher, moto camera and gallery all working flawlessly). I'd highly recommend trying it, even if you have previously. I just switched my color profile to "deep black colorful" as well and i must say I'm really loving my phone again.

I had major problems flashing DU when I tried. I did a full wipe and tried 3 different gapps, including the recommended mini dynamic gapps and I got constant google play services force closes when it booted up. I couldn't even get to settings to try to close or mute something to look around at what was causing it. I'm using Ground Zero Roms Validus and its great for the most part. Still want to try DU though if I can figure out that issue.

That's weird. I never had that problem before. I might flash the ROM and gapps and make a backup and maybe install it to Android file host so you won't run into any problems. I use open gapps aroma and change the SMS app, clock, calender, and other stock apps for Google apps and it worked fine for me. Even dynamic gapps worked fine. I don't know what the problem could be.

I can understand the frustration, but to some degree it is almost a crap shoot, especially on AOSP. Things can break from one update to the next as the devs work their magic. What worked today may not work tomorrow and vice versa. That is why I recommend trying then out. Devs typically work to improve their ROMs both stability and feature wise but given the difference in usage, apps, and even manufacturing variances in hardware internals, a ROM could work well for one user's needs but be broken for another.
As far as AOSP, I hear a lot of good things about AICP, but I use stock rooted on my MXPE so I can't confirm anything. It works great on my old LG G3 D850.
How?

Aicp April nightlies have been amazing, huge upgrade over previous Roms for me, including previous versions of AICP itself. Battery life is poor currently, but everything is buttery smooth and snappy (v4a, Substratum, pixel launcher, moto camera and gallery all working flawlessly). I'd highly recommend trying it, even if you have previously. I just switched my color profile to "deep black colorful" as well and i must say I'm really loving my phone again.

Sorry for the noob question...I did a lot of custom roms on my SGS2 and SGS4 but when I got my Moto X Pure I have just used it stock.
I have been having enough issues with it that I considered replacing it with a Moto G5 Plus but decided I might as well try a ROM before I give up on it entirely.
So back to the noob question...how do I get from stock to that ROM? Also, can you send me a link to the ROM you are talking about (This one? https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-style/development/rom-aicp-clark-xt1575-t3222868/page646)

To your noob question: I'm pretty sure the general process is the same to get a custom ROM as the SGSs you did. Flash the appropriate custom ROM made for your device via custom recovery. That has not really changed since custom ROMs for Android first came into being. The methods of getting a custom recovery onto a device changes though so please use due diligence to get it done if you haven't already.
