Bought a Razr M, seller claiming it was "Developer Edition" -- phone just arrived, no "Developer Edition" logo on the back, and in "Settings" --> "About Phone" --> "Model number" it just says "DROID RAZR M"
It's not a Dev Ed after all, is it...? Or is there some other way to tell?
Any help appreciated -- thanks!

Power off the device, hold all three buttons, select AP Fastboot and if the status code isn't 3, its a Dev phone.

I got "Device is LOCKED. Status code: 0" -- so it *is* a Dev Ed?
Sorry just want to make sure I 100% understand...?

If you dont care about your warrenty, type in "fastboot oem unlock" into your terminal and you can be 100% sure about that.
This will unlock your bootloader, allowing you to flash custom kernels and images The only real difference between the Developer Edition and Consumer Edition is the bootloader. You can unlock using oem unlock with the Dev, and using Dan's utility (pre-update).
Okay thanks for all the help.
Turned out not to be a Dev Ed but seller has agreed to refund my money
Easy. Just go into the setting on the phone and towards the bottom right above "about phone" should be a menu called "developer options". If you dont have that then no you dont have a developer edition.

Every phone has these options. If they are hidden, you can enable by tapping "build number" 7 times.

Thanks to k1mu for figuring this trick out.
It's originally a Samsung Galaxy S4 root method but does infact work for the Razr M.
Here is a link to the zip file. Saferoot.zip
Download & Unzip/Extract saferoot.zip
Plug your RAZR M into your PC via the USB Cable and Make sure the USB Mode is set to MTP.
Enable USB Debugging on your phone.
In Developer Options, make sure "USB Debugging" is checkmarked.
--Go to "Settings", "More...", then "Developer Options".
If "Developer Options" doesn't appear, then you'll need to enable it - go to "Settings", "More", "About Phone". Scroll down so the "Build Number" is visible, then tap on that several times until developer mode is enabled.
Allow your computer to access ADB.
Make sure that your computer is allowed to use USB debugging on your phone. To do this, unplug your phone and unlock it. Then, plug in the USB cable.
If you see an "Alllow USB debugging?" window pop up, tap on the "Always allow from this computer" to check it, then tap OK.
If you don't see that popup, it's OK, you should be OK to proceed.
On WINDOWS - run 'Install.bat' and follow on screen instructions
On LINUX & MacOS - To run this root, download and unzip the zip file. Open a shell window, and to change to the directory where you unpacked saferoot.zip, and type "sh ./install.sh". Follow the onscreen instructions and once complete your Razr M should now have root.
If the embedded adb fails, you'll need to have the Android Debugging Bridge (adb) installed and configured and on your path. You can test that it's ready by opening a shell (Terminal) window and typing "adb shell". If you get a shell prompt on the phone, type "exit" and you're ready to go.

Indeed.
Sir we have had a thread about this root method from the day kc6wke discovered it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2602657
Having another will cause confusion. Can you understand that? Xda forum rules!
Please delete.
Thank you.
Why don't you make this same post to the above thread & I will link to it in my op? Why not?
hey guys I helped a friend root his razr M using the saferoot method the other day, and now he is wanting to install a custom rom, I showed him safestrap and he installed and tried it, but he said when he clicks on create rom slot that nothing happens. I don have a razr M so I am wondering if there is a newer version of safestrap than the 3.12 that is on hash codes page, or if there is a different boot loader that is more supported for this device
Thanks alot

Thanks man,
I got him up and running, he wasnt selecting a data partition size. Its kinda hard to walk someone through this stuff by text haha. And on my note 3 and razr maxx they just defaulted to a partition size and I dont have to worry about selecting one, so I didnt think of that as a possibilty. My bad
Thanks again though!

Go to settings
Developers option (if u dont find it go to about phone and tap 5-6 times on build no )
Then u will see the developers option in the settings
Enable oem unlocking and also enable android debugging
This is the main reason behind it oem unlocking is disabled

In the bootloader, what are the two lines under the green "Battery OK" line? Should be something like...
Device is LOCKED. Status Code: 0
Software status: Official
Also please attach output of 'fastboot getvar all'
its mentioned under battery ok line.
Device is Engineering
Software Status: Official

You can't unlock an Engineering status bootloader. Your device was repaired and shipped out incomplete, not the first one we have seen... You need to contact Moto support, there is a thread in the official forums about this bootloader state, it's kind of a partial unlock but it's uses for factory flashing in a different way than we do it.
I was searching for a method to unlock the bootloader after updating to nougat but i couldn't find any.
Any android version the bootloader unlock method is same. check the forum for newbie thread to unlock your bootloader.

You can get your unlock code from the Motorola website: https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/unlock-your-device-a
As the website mentions, this will void the rest of your warranty once your device is unlocked, though there are reports on XDA of people getting their devices serviced even after a bootloader unlock. Your experience may vary.
Also, I'd recommend toggling OEM unlock on - you can get to this by going into Settings > About Phone, and tapping 7 times on the build number section. Go back to the main Settings menu and you should see Developer Options has appeared. Go into the Developer Options and scroll to OEM unlocking, and toggle it on before you boot to unlock your bootloader.
So the method would be:
1 - Toggle OEM unlock in the Developers Options
2 - Follow the Motorola website instructions to unlock your bootloader
3 - Wait whilst it wipes your data
4 - Boot and enjoy your unlocked phone
Good luck!
Waiting for device
In command window it shows as 'waiting for device'. Could you help me?

You need to check your driver to recognize the device. With the command "fastboot devices" there you should see your devices serial number. If not = driver, cable, firewall problem or your device is not in fastboot mode
Ok guys new to this device I went to Moto site to get unlocked bootloader and it's says it can't. I attached a screenshot is there any work around for this?

Did you by chance purchase the Amazon-exclusive variant of the device (with the ads to reduce the price)? They're both the same, except you can't unlock the Amazon version's bootloader.
Also, try opening developer options (tap the build number 7 times, press the back key, and then the new developer options menu that appeared) and then enabling the "OEM unlocking" option. Then try unlocking the bootloader again via fastboot.
So, like an idiot I got excited about rooting my phone and my first big mistake was not making a backup. I followed all the steps in the video titled "Official Android 7.0 Nougat on Moto X Pure Edition!" by HereGadgets on Youtube.
Now I'm stuck at the "WARNING BOOTLOADER UNLOCKED" Screen. The only difference I can find in my process was that when I was going through the process it said "Slot Count Not Found".
I have tried to use the "Moto X ToolKit" but it can't connect to daemon.
Also (if it means anything) when I'm in my bootloader it says "Status Code 3".
Yes I know that I am very dumb.
I tried to reflash to a factory default, and it says "Not supported command in current status". So I think I would have to access the "Allow OEM unlock" option in developer options, which I obviously cannot do since my phone is stuck on the screen.
I'm quite hopeless but if anyone can shed some light on how to fix my issue I'd be forever grateful.
