I am currently working on a project for my computer forensics course. I am trying to gather methods used to root Android's without having to install a custom ROM and lose the data held on the internal memory. I would appreciate it if people could help me generate a list of known methods for older and newer versions of Android.
--------------
E.g. AndRoot - used on versions lower than v2.27.651.6?
Universal AndRoot - used on v2.1
SuperOneClick
Unrevoked
--------------
I plan to roll back my HTC Hero to use the older ROM's and attempt the exploits. Does anyone recommend somewhere to get older stock ROM's from?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Z4Root is an app I used from the market that will root your phone without a PC.
1) Install Z4Root
2) Run app and hit "Perm Root"
3) Phone reboots and installs SU
4) Done

That's great thanks, any others you can think of? I don't seem to be getting any repsonses from people.
so i rooted my mt3g fender ota 2.2.1 with gingerbreak.apk v1.20 it went thru the whole process sucessful...rebooted and i did root checker and have root couldnt find superuser app..please help gettin superuser working.
Try again.
Or manually run gingerbreak then push the files yourself
If you go to the market, you can download rom manager. Install itx and under the download section, there should be a category called "Extras". Download the first one if you are on cupcake or donut, otherwise download the second one. When it is done downloading, open up settings>applications. Check off "Allow nonmarket sources". Open up your notification bar, and tap on the download. It should ask you if you want to install. Go ahead, and you're done.
Let me know how it goes!

Superuser app is just as the name says an app.
You can install it like an other app.
Try to search for "superuser" on android market.
To be rooted = have SU binaries. It has nothing to do with superuser app.
Try using super one click, I unrooted my mt3g 1.2 successfully and painlessly with it.
This does not work with Droid X System Version .621.
(Information on this post was taken from Pete's website: http://www.psouza4.com/Bionic/)
NOTE: If you were rooted on the original OTA and took the update to .602 and lost root, read the 'Droid X' notes under the how-to.

How to: One Click Root for Windows 7/Vista
1. Your phone must be connected via USB data cable to your computer and be recognized.
2. If your phone is connected, but not recognized, you may need to install one of these software drivers:
-Windows universal 32-bit Motorola drivers version 5.2.0
-Windows universal 64-bit Motorola drivers version 5.2.0
3. Download this one-click root package: PetesMotorolaRootTools_v1.08.zip
4. Extract the contents of the one-click root package to a new folder on your computer.
5. Make sure USB Debugging is enabled on your device. This should be under Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB Debugging.
6. From the new folder on your computer, double-click on Pete's_Motrola_Root_Tools.exe to begin the root process.
7. Click 'Root My Phone'.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Droid X Note:
Droid X Notes
Your phone may need to be in either charging mode or PC mode or you may need to toggle it a number of times for the device to recognized correctly.
If you are trying to root from the OTA Gingerbread update and you were previously rooted, you will probably experience problems with this root method because of the pre-existence of busybox and superuser.apk. For that reason, you may need to attempt both the script method (for Windows XP users) and program executable method (Windows Vista/7 users). If you are still having problems, please follow these instructions:
Open a Command Prompt in the folder where you extracted the one-click root package (see instructions for rooting). If you are using Windows 7, you can just use Shift+Right-Click on the folder you extracted the package and choose to "Open a command prompt here". For other operating systems or versions of Windows, you may require some DOS experience or need to Google how to change directories.
In the command prompt, type the following command:
adb shell
Click to collapse
If you receive any kind of error, then you may not be in the folder where you extracted ADB.exe or you may need to reboot your computer, your phone, or check the connection. You should receive an ADB prompt ending with either a # or a $.
If the line ends with a $, then run the one-click exploit for Windows XP (even if you have Windows Vista or 7) and only complete step 1.
When you have adb shell ending with a #, type the following commands:
mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/system /system
rm /system/bin/su
rm /system/xbin/su
Click to collapse
Ignore any messages that warn you about the file not being found/missing. We're removing old copies of su/superuser which are causing this one-click root method to fail.
(credit: KevlarGibs)
Additionally, during the parts of the one-click root that reboot your phone, your phone will most likely reboot into recovery instead of into the standard Android lock screen. If this is the case, simply unplug the cable and reboot the phone manually. When you are finished rebooting, plug the phone back in again. Some people have had to reboot their PC too.
Finally, some users have mentioned that the root isn't taking affect right away for all apps. Eventually, after several reboots, the phone finally takes root. We're not sure why this is (I don't have a Droid X -- I'm just re-posting this information for brevity).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please try the Windows Vista/7 method first! It will work better for most Windows XP users.
Only use this method if the other has not worked yet.

Great tool, thanks so much!

Awesome! Works perfectly!
Nice, I may give it a go (may sbf to 602 for a clean start)

I SBF'd to .602 on my DX and the root was successful but I can't get my phone to boot into CWM Recovery. I tried following the special DX instructions but can't get the ADB Shell to show anything but a $.
Whats next for me to try to get this working?
Hi I'm trying to unroot my x2 and it keeps saying Error: you are missing adb.exe, which was packaged with this program. The adb.exe is in the same folder as all of the other files i extracted to my restore folder. Any ideas?
I will try this at thanksgiving for my dad's X
It was rooted froyo and got the ota GB and wont root. Hopefully this works

Your preinstall is full. With Root Explorer go to preinstall/app/ and delete something (NFS). Reflash Clockwork mod. Then try again.

Were you previously rooted on .602? If so, you may need to follow the Droid X notes.

This worked perfectly on my Droid X....thanks for making it so easy!!
Finally worked up the cajones to use Pete's Tools and rooted my DX. *whew*
Doing a complete TiBu right now. Couple quick questions.......
1. Is CWM installed? If so, how does one access. If not, ROM Manager perhaps?
2. Renamed blurupdater_VZW.apk to .bak to block updates
3. Any "landmines" I should NOT uninstall?
Sorry if I sound noobish but this is my only phone number and am proceeding cautiously.
Thanks

First of all, let me reassure you that anything you do to your phone can be reversed with a simple SBF. ^_^
Install ClockworkMod Recovery through Droid 2 Bootstrapper, then use ROM Manager to update it to the latest version.
There is plenty of things that you can remove that will cause issues =P It's pretty much trial and error, there are lists you can look up that will tell you what can and can't be removed, but regardless, always make a backup in CWM.

Droid 2 Bootstrapper via Android Market will do it, one presumes?

I amaze myself sometimes. lol
Has anyone flashed working CWM via ROM Manager?
Can't say I have interest in flashing ROMs. Just want CWM for nandroid system backups actually.
STRANGE!
DroidX, 2.3.3, original Moto ROM, LauncherPro+
First time I did Pete's it worked perfectly.
After .605 OTA it had a problem, so I re-Peted.
Each time Pete tried to reboot the phone, I had to pull the battery. Eventually, the process finished and I had a rooted Droid. It's fast, stable, has fine battery life. TitaniumPro, QuickBoot, and other root-only tools work properly. Various things ask for Superuser permission, and I give it, and they work properly.
But the SUPERUSER app has disappeared. When I go to Market, it says "Installed". It doesn't appear on my app list, and was never frozen. It's there, but invisible.
Everything else works, so should I just leave it alone?

You should be able to find Superuser by using the search key. It's not really important to have, it just manages the superuser permissions. I think of it as a background app.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer. I'm a newbie to the Droid 2, which I'll be using on Page Plus system, and I'd like to root it so I can manage data use.
Here’s what I’m running:
android version: 2.3.3
system version: 4.5.601
From what I can discern, these are the things I need to do (I've done a lot of research but am not finding any clear up-to-date instructions). Any feedback would be much appreciated.
First step: disabling the auto system-updater:
The dreaded 4.5.629 is lurking and wants to install itself, and I know at some point (either first, or after I root) I need to install an update blocker. Is this the one I want to use (OTA RootKeeper), or is there something better?
Second step: rooting
Steps to Root (this was pulled from some instructions from 2010 so I'm not sure if there's a better way available now).
1. Download the Motorola Droid 2 root pack that corresponds to your Android version. Here are the links: Froyo 2.2 / Gingerbread 2.3 (PetesMotorolaTool) . Save on your PC. [the link to Pete’s Motorola tool is dead, and I’m not sure where the best (virus-free) download site is]
2. Make sure that you have the Motorola Droid 2 drivers installed on your system. Here are the links: 32-bit download/ 64-bit download.
3. create backups of all the video, music, photos, documents and of all the other important files stored on your Droid 2. This needs to be done in case the data gets corrupted or lost during the root.
4. you can choose to save the APN and MMS Settings in case something goes wrong after rooting the phone and you won’t be able to browse the web. [I’m not sure what this means, or how to do it]
5. charge the phone’s battery until it is over 75% so that it won’t discharge while you’re applying the steps in the tutorial.
6. disable or uninstall all the firewalls, antivirus and antimalware apps from your device so that it won’t block the rooting process.
7. enable the USB debugging mode. It can be found on your phone’s Settings menu, Applications and then open Development.
How to root the Motorola Droid 2 running Gingerbread 2.3:
1. Since you’ve already downloaded the rooting package, before getting to the tutorial guide, you can go ahead and extract its contents on your PC.
2. Connect your Droid 2 to your computer via USB cable.
3. Now launch the ‘Pete’s Motorola Tool’ and click the file named ‘Root My Phone’ to begin rooting your phone.
4. Your phone will reboot and when the home screen loads it will feature a rooted Gingerbread 2.3 installation.
I'll post a new link to Pete's Root tools in my list
but superoneclick should work
to block updates you needed to be rooted, then
with a root browser or file manager with root access
Rename /system/app/BlurUpdater_VZW.apk to BlurUpdater_VZW.apk.bak.
Rename /system/app/BlurUpdater_VZW.odex to BlurUpdater_VZW.odex.bak.
my list sd_shadow's [Collection] of Links: FAQs, Guides, Rooting, SBFs, ROMs... - Google Docs
also the update for D2 is 2.3.4/4.5.621 which can be rooted now with magic md5

Not many people own this device. Just thought I would share that the F880 series and possibly the ZX1 can still be rooted. I came across a Japanese YouTube video showing the root process for an F886 with 1.24.0000 firmware. It involves using the KingRoot software and installing SuperSU instead of the KingRoot app. I tried it myself on my F887 and can confirm it works! Since I couldn't read Japanese, I just followed along with the video and used the links in the description.
Link to video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_F4Ef7fBo0
You might want to enable usb debugging after enabling developer options (I'm not sure you really need to do this, but it couldn't hurt) http://www.greenbot.com/article/245...-options-on-your-android-phone-or-tablet.html
Steps I've deciphered from watching the video:
1) Download and install the KingRoot software for Windows from http://www.kingroot.net (the software is completely in Chinese language unfortunately)
2) Start up the KingRoot software (if it hasn't already started up already) and plug in your F880 series walkman. It should be detecting your device and downloading root exploits for it.
3) When it's done finding the root exploit for your device, click on the green Root button and it should start rooting your device. (the device should restart a couple of times)
4) Rooting should be finished when the program shows a big green check mark and KingRoot app launches on the device.
5) Close the KingRoot app since we'll be installing SuperSU instead.
6) Go to: http://www.w0lfdroid.com/2015/05/How-to-Remove-Replace-KingUser-KingRoot-with-SuperSU.html?m=1 and download Replace_Kingroot_With_SuperSU.zip at the bottom of the page.
7) Extract Replace_Kingroot_With_SuperSU.zip and there should be a folder named "mrw". Move the "mrw" folder to the root directory of the device. You can disconnect the device from the computer after the "mrw" folder is done copying and close the KingRoot program on the computer.
8) Open up the Google Play store and download/install "Terminal Emulator for Android".
9) Start up Terminal Emulator and type the following:
su
(hit enter and press "allow" when the pop up appears)
sh /sdcard/mrw/root.sh
(hit enter, the script should run and there should be a whole lot of failures, it should also crash)
10) Press OK, and SuperSU should start up. Press "Normal" and SuperSU should start to install. Press OK again the next 2 times when the pop up appears.
Congratulations! Your F880 should now be rooted! Now you can install awesome stuff like Viper4Android, Xposed, and a bunch of battery saving apps such as Greenify and Amplify.
Better late than never, THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
It works :laugh::laugh:
Now my Walkman is Bloodware-free and the Battery lasts longer.
Oh wow thank you I own this device, and you are truely a life saver!
