[Q] Looking for eyecandy ROM... - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, please excuse the newbieness, just got this device.
Basically I'm looking for a ROM that has customization available. I'd like to be able to change icons, app drawer background, etc. Is there such an "eye candy" ROM for Nexus 4?
I looked through dev sections but couldn't find anything obvious... which brings me to my next Q: what's the difference between the "original dev" section and the "dev" section?
Thanks!

Those customization options that you listed can be accessed through a custom launcher like apex or nova. You don't even need a custom ROM for that stuff.
Use Google for the answer to your other question.

Get Carbon ROM. It's the mist feature packed one there is. Install some nice themes for eye candy.
Original development is for "original"/independent development (even though 99% of it is basted off Cyanogenmod so.. Yep.) and android development is for development that has been kanged/taken from other development & had been changed, tweaked, etc.

Paranoidandroid is highly customizable and full featured (hybrid mode, pie controls, the new halo). You can find the link in my sig.

ParanoidAndroid it is!! Once you try it you won't be flashing any other ROM.

Guys no offence to PA, but it's barely any more customisable than stock.
Carbon, Xylon/uXylon, AXI0M are the most customisable ones.

I totally agree with you. Not trying to offend any one, as PA is my favorite rom, buts its definetly not as customizable as people are making it out to be. With that being said it does have the most innovative features in my opinion.

maybe PA doesn't have more customization options than aokp or carbon or any other rom but it has hybrid properties and that is TRUE customization for me...

Thanks guys, this should get me started. Appreciate it!

This. The color and individual app hybrid properties make it a winner for me. But that's just my opinion. OP, you'll never know which is best for you until you try them all out.
Happy flashing!

What that guy said.
Cm9 is more of a true stock ics experience. Aokp alows for more customization to the Rom

Just to let everyone know both AOKP and CM9 are based off of the CM9 source as a starting point. As others have already said AOKP is more customize-able/configurable.
If you want a straight Nexus style experience go for CM9, if you want it to not be so stock Google, then go for AOKP.
You will not be disappointed in either one, they are both excellent!
Just for my personal opinion, I am an CM9 fan, and have been using CM since the version 3 days. I also like AOKP very much, but it is not quite that true stock android experience.
The one thing that keeps me on CM9 instead of AOKP are the notification toggles. Even after changing the settings in AOKP the toggles don't look quite as nice as in CM9. But then once I'm in CM9 I miss some other features. Just not enough to go back.

Yeah everyone pretty much replied to your question.
I prefer cm9 because its a smaller footprint on the system. Its a lighter rom and I can notice a speed difference between aokp and cm9. Aokp has A LOT of customization but seems a tiny bit slower and buggy from MY experience.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
I like both AOKP and CM9- they're great in their own ways.
AOKP has a few features I wish CM9 had (center clock, built-in MIUI-style battery bar, and the brightness slider) but otherwise they're close.
As many said, much of the work on AOKP was already done by CM9 contributors, as (unless I'm mistaken) AOKP basically forked from CM9, and continues to integrate code from it.
So as someone else said, if you want a Nexus-like experience, go with CM9, and if you want even more customization, go with AOKP.
Another nice feature on aokp is that you can set your service to switch from 3g to edge when the screen is off, which helps conserve a lot of battery
From my experience on the Nexus S, I find cm9 to feel a little smoother, faster and more stable while aokp has many many more bells and whistles. That being said, after using aokp for awhile I eventually switched back to cm9 for a more reliable experience.

Well, and what else
Running stock at the moment, had no problems' very snappy.
I like Paranoid Android but almost all are very similar and the devs have done a great job on all the ROMs.

Used codename android and then it became slightly buggy. Running XenonHD and it's smooth and stable. Loving it right now.
Will have to see when 4.2 ROMs get uploaded but so far Xenon finally removed the blue grids around home screens while moving. Left over from tablet UI and I just hate it and CNA still has it.. Don't want to use alternative launchers either.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
I feel they are all about the same. PA really is in a league of it's own if you want to utilize their features.
I jump around every few months/weeks. Basically waiting for 4.2 to drop at this point.
AOKP when I feel like tweaks
For performance, eos or rasbean ever since I've learnt to tweaks and theme things myself, I have been not needing the tweaks of ROMs like AOKP
Resbean for now, zip aligned, odexed, tweaked up and super fast

I wanna try RasBean, any bugs so far?
You should change the question as "best rom/kernel combination" since rom's pretty much depend on the kernels to perform well.. Franco R25 is the best so far for my taste and Glazed rom is the pair..

[Q] Why does everyone use Paranoid?

So i've hesitated on rooting for a while now, but i finally did today. Now i'm looking for some good roms to flash, and i notice that a lot of N7 owners use PA. I want to know why? I tried CM10 and its pretty cool
Eh. I didn't like it. I had to RMA my tablet because the touchscreen was bein' cray.
But the interface of the rom? 10 points. Amazing. So fluent... it is a hybrid ROM that let's you use the tablet in tablet ui. And switch between stock, tablet, and phablet. I loved it.
Tldr;I hated it. I loved it.

The best thing to do is read the op for the pa rom and note the features it lists. All roms have their features listed to help you decide. Also, read other users comments within the thread to see what they are saying. It is all there waiting for you to read.
And for future reference, questions belong in the Q&A sub forum, not general.

I agree. PA has never felt as stable for me as CM. And I find that I prefer my tablet in portrait mode now, so I don't care about hybrid apps (plus the mail ones like email work proudly now)

I just tried it out and it was really unstable for something I would use everyday. I use SmoothROM and it is really stable. I put tablet UI and its perfect for my preference. It's all up on what people really want from their Nexus I guess.

Gotta disagree, as mods have gone on record stating that something such a that is outside of the scope of the Dev forum and against the rules. Replies in those threads are supposed to be limited to those relevant to development of the rom, such as bug reports. Asking a question of this nature in a Dev thread is only going to make it harder for folks to find relevant info in the thread.

I've been running PA on my N7 for a while now. Had 2.54 (the last 'stable' release) on my old 16GB and it was great. When I broke that one I got the 32GB and the first thing I flashed was PA 2.99 beta. Now running the 14-01-2013 beta build and for me its flawless. I love tablet UI and the ability to change the layout of individual apps and to set DPI to 160. PA Colours let's you choose custom colours for Nav bar, buttons etc. Its smooth and stable. Its like another device entirely. I even bought their Preferences Pro app to support the project and I'm eagerly awaiting P.A. 3
Combined with M-Kernel a30 and Trickster Mod I'm running at 1.9Ghz Max CPU and 600mhz GPU.
Its beastly. NFS:MW flies! Lol

This is a known fault. Its easily sorted by installing a 3rd party launcher although I believe it is fixed in the new build (which I'm just about to flash)

looking for aokp mod to display date in status bar (or ROM recommendation)

I'm looking for a mod for official AOKP or something similar that will allow me to display the date in the status bar along with the clock (as far as I can tell, AOKP lets you show day of the week, but not the whole date).
I know there are other ROMs that will allow this, but if possible I'd like to go with AOKP because I'm setting this up for my girlfriend and it's fairly easy to use.
Or if there's no mod for official AOKP that'll do this, could you recommend a very stable ROM that's similar to AOKP and very stable? I've never owned a Mako so I'm not familiar with the ROMs for it. I don't want her to have problems because I promised her it'd work just as well as stock, except better.
Thanks very much.

Pac Man is great, but I want to go with something a little simpler - as close to vanilla AOKP as possible.

Looking for a Rom that..

OK so I know this question comes from my lack of knowledge.. But here goes..
I've been using Task650s aokp for like 6 months.. Just got my 4s, and installed it right away. Love it.. Mostly because I want major customization. However, I do want to experience some of the s4 features that come stock.
Is there a Rom that I can use the theme chooser on for aokp and cm themes, while still having access to stock features that are otherwise not accessible on many custom roms?

What I think you really mean to ask is, "Is there a custum Touchwiz rom that includes the CM/AOKP theme chooser?"
The answer is, "No."
You could always check out the xtheme engine, it's supposed to be just like the theme engine from cm/aokp but fit stick Roms
