Ok, so I'm going to be making a ROM... shocker, right? Another scrub getting started with Android development.
I just have a few basic questions, mostly preference stuff, before I settle down for the long haul with my ROM. So here's a few generic questions, and if any DEV's or experienced users could answer I'd appreciate it.
1) MDL or MF9?! This question has been bugging me ALL day. I'm running MDL right now and have no issues with it, but I know MF9 has a few improvements over MDL. If MF9 is the "future" then should I flash stock MF9 and start developing for it instead of MDL?
2) IDE... Ok, so I'm a noob and am running Windows 8, lol. (I know, shoot me now.) Although I'm not opposed to downloading Ubuntu again and dual booting for DEV purposes, I'd prefer to stick to just Windows. So as far as Windows goes, what IDE should I be working with? I know that Eclipse is the running champion, but I also know that Android Studio is now officially backed by Google and is making some headway, although it's still in its early stages.
3) Stock or custom... So this question is more personal preference I suppose. Obviously I'm at no skill level to just be outright coding my own stuff. I need to start with a base and work up from there. The obvious answer to this is to copy someone else's ROM and build it my way. That way I can see how other people develop and can learn from them. But, I also know there's a benefit in starting fresh from stock, primarily so you don't have to deal with other people's bugs. Then I can add my own mods and code as I want. So.. as a noob, should I start with stock or build off of someone else's work?
Thanks for the responses

Here are my personal opinions. I am not a custom Rom builder because I like to stick closer to stock myself. So take this for what it is worth.
1. MF9 is the current OS version. So like it or not that is going to be the "supported" version until a new one comes out. I would personally work on that.
2. I use Eclipse myself and have not tried Android Studio. Although I will check it out now
3. I would say start with a clean base. I am really anal so even if I started from a full Rom as the base I would still end up tearing everything apart anyway to make sure I was happy with how things were done.

Thanks. Are you familiar with "android kitchen" at all? I needed to use it but then found out that the Sprint GS4 variant is untested with it. Does anyone know if it works for the SPH-L720 or not?

I am but haven't used it in a long time. So I am not sure if it works or not on the S4.
Ya, Eclipse is good. I'm barely starting to dabble in development also with eclipse. I'm assuming you will be doing a TW ROM from the sound of it. Its fairly simple but very deep and has a lot of step by step walkthroughs to vet you started.

Any experience with Android Kitchen? I'm looking at tutorials that rely heavily on it. But if it doesn't support the S4 then I won't even bother.

So talking to my buddy about all the "junk" loaded on the Samsung, he kept raving about how his old Nexus One was just the way I would like it. I would like to have a "plain" version of Android 2.1 on my phone. I have a coworker friend that's a Linux guru that's willing to help. Here's my questions.
Can I take take the Samsung released source for the hardware drivers and compile it with a stock Android 2.1 platform? I'm not asking for step by step. More of a 10,000 foot how to. Is that possible?
Can you leave the CSC and Modem info the same and just install a PDA ROM with Odin? Or would you be overwriting all of that info on the phone?

I'll second this and ask that if you do figure it out, please share with the community.
I think that vanilla Roms are a little further away in the future. First step in the process right now would be for someone to be able to compile a kernel from the Samsung released source code that works. Unfortunately the current Captivate kernel source code, when compiled, causes issues (voices garbled, lag when waking up the phone) that are not present in the stock precompiled kernel. These bugs are apparently not present in the other versions of the source code. Once these initial bugs are ironed out, we can truly start down the path of having custom fixes, and the devs can start to focus on bigger challenges, like making the vanilla Eclair or Froyo Roms to start working with our kernel. Good thing about this phone is that there are going to be so many versions of it, that parallel development is happening on multiple platforms. This will likely produce independent breakthroughs that could be theoretically ported between the platforms, but unfortunately it also slows down the development of each platform due to the quirks that have to be overcome. I hope that, in the future, we get to a place where all the source codes are merged into master repository that has all the necessary improvements and the ability to overcome individual platform quirks, so that the development can proceed more rapidly.

Also for clarification, when you bought a Nexus One straight from Google for AT&T, was it considered "Vanilla"? Is the build on that phone just like someone downloaded the source for 2.1 and compiled it with the hardware drivers and that's it? I'm wondering what all comes on a "basic" Andriod ROM straight from the source.

Nexus One is as Vanilla as it comes. Just straight up Android! I don't think there is anything added to stock 2.1 or 2.2 on the Nexus.

Most of the kernel compiling struggles are documented here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=740747
Mimocan himself has started some work on it here:

There are also people having success mixing Vibrant ROM on the Captivate with some GPS crash issues:

I am trying to follow those threads, and since I am not a developer, I can't personally contribute to the process. But it is interesting to me anyway.
I've seen these before. I thought they were just edited versions of ROM's sucked off a existing phone. Are these compiled from scratch?

The first two are attempts to recompile the kernel to put in the ext3/ext4 mimocan fix. The third one I believe is a script for boot logo animation hack to achieve the same thing.
I forgot to mention one more thread:

So we've got the source code with drivers and know which ones to use from the T959 for fixing the voice issue. We've got the stock kernel. What's left to creat a plain jane captivate?

I'm guessing not too much. There are somethings that would need to be edited such as handling the capacitive buttons. The i9000 roms handle buttons differently regardless of the kernel so, its apparently an OS level config.
I've been wanting to work on this but I've been neck deep in source code from work.
Here is a good how to: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=704561

My point was that given the I9000 rom needs source level changes in order to work as expected(haptic feedback on certain buttons, etc) then running an AOSP build may require some source level changes as well. It may not be as simple as building and flashing.
Can someone please direct me to a working Kitchen for this phone? Also any hints or tips would be nice. I've done a bit of ROM cooking for Windows Mobile and Windows Phone, but never on Android. I'm anxious to get my hands dirty on the G2 and need some guidance.
I looked at the Kitchens listed, but didn't see any that specifically said they were G2 compatible.

Working Kitchen - System Requirements - Hopefully Windows 8 x64???

How are the cooks doing the modifications to the stock ROMs to get a working customized ROM?

Have you tried using some Xposed modules to remove certain things and add others? Objective ROM is about as close to AOSP as you can get, pretty much everything that isn't needed to run the phone had been removed.
But the styling is still TouchWiz so all of the notification portion and the launcher and setting.apk.

Hey,
been a while since I been here(from back in the days of my Galaxy Nexus). I just picked up a Note 4. I like it. I somewhat dislike the TouchWiz and hate how out of box it's using 1.8-2GB of ram on start up(assuming because of TouchWiz).
Is there any roms out there that run practically stock Android(pref. 5.0 Lollipop?) but still have the S-Pen suite enabled, including the part when I pull my S-Pen out it notices it and gives me that "Air command" menu.
One last plus would be something that gives me the ability to still use fast charge 2.0.
I looked up a couple of roms but unless I missed something they don't offer these features.
Any help? I have the Canadian N910W8 model and use it on Band 4 AWS/UMTS(3G) and LTE on various freq's so the radio would(should, preferably stay in-tacked)
Thanks!
I don't think this belongs in this section man, maybe ask it in the Q and A. It will probably get moved.
On answering your question, at this stage there is no stock aosp rom that supports spen functions. It's a little bit of a dream for most users. Although I hear that lollipop will be faster than stock, that's what I've read.

That's wrong. There is S-Pen functionality in cm12 at this moment. All you have to do is download and install one or two apps from Play Store. This apps are even free.

You are not entirely right either. There are free versions of this apps, but for full functionality you have to pay, not that there is anything wrong with it, just stating the fact. Also you have some s-pen functionality, but not all of it, and in my opinion CM12 s-pen functionality is somewhat less fluent and intuitive then TW one. Regardless, I still prefer CM than TW

There is apps you can use with cm or some other aosp roms, but it's nothing like the spen features you get from within TW. Not that I'm a big fan of it myself, I have quite a few gripes myself, *cough* performance... But for the multi window and spen features, presently if you use them all, TW is it for now.

I would also like to know how is this thread relevant to Development section

Hey,
been a while since I been here(from back in the days of my Galaxy Nexus).
Thanks!

I have the same phone as you. So far LiquidSmooth and the Unofficial CM-12.0 are the only Lollipop builds that can even use the S-Pen (Unless you know of others). You won't get the TW features of course. I'm very slowly looking into building a AOSP Lollipop rom that is custom built for our N910W8 devices. I've never built my own before so it is a lot of learning.

It *should* be doing that. Unused RAM is wasted RAM. It's caching stuff for speed so that the next time it needs to load up something, it can check if it still is in RAM already. It's not a TouchWiz thing.

You can still install it on other versions of the Note 4. Just expect some things not to work. If your running the CAN version of the Note 4 I don't recommend using LS atm due to very poor battery life on this model.

Not a problem!
Has anyone tried converting all the original s-pen apps to user apps with titanium backup, and then doing an app and data backup of them from the stock ROM, installing CM12, and then try to install them?
I'd try it myself, but I'm asking on behalf of a mate, not for myself. I think there's a possibility that it might work. It's gotta be worth a try..
I've got CM12 on my S4, and it's awesome.
Now the omega touchwiz rom are released:
imo the best rom and all features would work like in stock.
try i..maybe what you seeking?

Really looking for a lollipop ROM, but thanks anyway.
You should try lollipop out too. I guarantee you'll not want to go back to KitKat if you do..

How do we do that? I haven't found a note 4 lollipop tw rom anywhere? Apart from an unstable unofficial cm rom.
My friend owns an samsung galaxy tab 4 t-230 and would love to upgrade it into a more pure android. Since i kind of got into android ROMs and there are no AOSP or CM roms for the tab 4 t-230 this would be a great chance for me to build a AOSP or CM rom. I have ubuntu 14.10 and a decent enough pc with 16 gb of ram and an i7. If anyone could help me abit of how to build a AOSP or CM rom for the device i would be verry thankfull.
----------------------Edit-----------------------
I wanted to say thank to you guys! I did quite some progress by now. If you own a t230 / nu then feel free to check out my custom kernel

Relevant post - some starting info, and check out the CM wiki he links to. Also, and this is a very basic step, but if you've never done this before it can be informative: download a rom zip file (preferably but not necessarily a stock-based kitkat rom for this device) and open it up in either 7zip or WinRar, check out the layout and structure, and familiarize yourself with the updater-script. (Actually you can do that with a firmware tar file too). Sorry I can't give you any more useful info, not a dev, definitely not a rom designer, just a guy who knows a fair amount of android stuff.
Also don't let the tone of that post discourage you; the poster was answering a guy who was basically asking about the feasibility of building a brand new rom for the sole purpose of being able to use one particular proprietary Samsung app. Yes it is difficult, but still doable, and you say you're motivated...
Yes i did forgot to say that any links for learning are appriciated
Well.. I would ask moonbutt74 for more info regarding commands and such, probably more info than I can give but.. keep in mind your going to have to download about 20+GB of source code and all that. Also a bunch more knowledge of more things I don't remember. But it is alot

Well I decided to revisit this thread. Never thought I would come so far. I really want to say thanks to all of you who supported me and still support me. Everyone has a beginning and here was mine. Now I am actually there where I really wanted to be. Releasing a custom kernel and finally work on a custom ROM! Thank you XDA!

I'm amazed on how much people learn and achieve as well as myself. I've seen people who were total newbies then later built custom recoveries, CM12, Mods, Roms etc. Anyway good luck on working your rom!

Also I thank you my life for introducing me to moonbutt74. He learned me everything from how to work with custom kernels to Roms. Sadly he decided to stop developing a few Werks ago but he's doing it for his own good. I still will mention @moonbutt74 on my future projects because he really is the one who changed me from confused to knowing what is actually going on. So thanks allot !
