Fixing Charging Issue [Solution] - Kindle Fire General

At first my Fire wouldn't charge unless it was placed in a particular way, then it stopped altogether. I pronounced it dead, and left it stowed away for a few months, but then decided to try and fix it. I think this guide may be useful for anyone who wants to fix a kindle with dead charging. Note that you may damage your kindle in the process so if you are still under warranty, use it.
1. Take off the back cover. You may need to use a guitar pick or something similar.
2. Take off the two battery leads. One has a locking mechanism which needs to be lifted before the ribbon cable can be taken out.
3. Take out all screws connected motherboard to rest of device. There are connections underneath the board so be careful when lifting it.
4. When I lifted it, I found the USB connector had broken off the entire board (if it was even attached in the first place) and this was obviously causing the problems, as the USB connector could now only connect to the motherboard if pressure was applied so that it was being held on somehow by it. To fix this, I could have tried to solder the tiny USB connections onto the board, but instead I used a different way which is working perfectly for many weeks now.
5. Get a rubber band and tie a not in it numerous times until the knot is about 3-4mm thick. Cut off remaining rubber band and superglue the knot onto the bottom side of the USB connector (the side that faces the display when assembled). Then insert the USB connector into it's little holder under the board, with the rubber band firm beneath it and replace the motherboard. Redo all the screws, reconnect any connectors you've disconnected (you may have had to disconnect some to remove/move the motherboard - always undo battery cables before you work on the innards of any device).
6. If you've done this correctly, the round rubber band knot should press the USB connector continuously on to the board. Test using your stock charger before you put it back together because the back cover is pretty hard to get off.
7. Replace the back cover and enjoy!
Notes: My rubber band knot was actually a little too large, which meant that to connect the USB plug I had to press the kindle together to insert the cable, but charging is reliable and working so far, so I'm happy about that.

How about using E-Tape instead of a rubber band?
Sent from my Amazon Kindle Fire using xda app-developers app

The reason I used rubber band was because it pushed the connector against the severed contacts on the board. I doubt that simply sticking it on with any sort of tape would work as effectively.

Yes, but I am away from home at the moment so I didn't have access to one.

Thanks for posting this at this time! I am currently doing an engineering fair and bought a soldering iron for it. I will try the rubber band way and then try solder if it doesn't work. Thanks again!

No problem! Glad to be a help

Can you take a picture?

So, I have this kfire that didn't charge very well and the usb connection with the PC needed a lot of fiddling around, when I got an n7 charger it charged perfectly, maybe the kfire charger is defective.

Ill try to get a picture later.
Sometimes the charger is the problem so make sure you check that first before you open up your fire.

Attempting this now. Do you have any pictures?

Bump for noobs and others.

Can you post a picture of the rubber band and that other think together I don't get what your saying are you saying tie the rubber band it is that measurement you told is to be and but it under that other thing so it pushes against the motherboard and forces it to be there can you please explain that part a little more explaining please thanks

[Q] Not charging unless I put upward pressure on USB cable

Hello everyone,
Since a few days my phone doesn't charge unless I hold the cable up and in the left or right corner of the port.
If I just stick it in, it doesn't connect/charge at all. And sometimes it says it's charging, but it isn't at all (or it's losing more power than it's receiving because it doesn't have good contact with the port).
Is there any fix to this or does anyone else have this problem?
It is NOT a problem with my micro-USB cable, I tried many, they all act the same.
Bad news
You have to replace your USB port, there's no doubt about, unfortunately!:crying:
Edit: there's a little chance to solve this by cleaning up your USB port...
i had this and it turned out to be dirt ground into the bottom of the USB port. A thin piece of wire from a tie wrap sorted it.
(of course, usually it IS a faulty USB port)

I suppose this is a stand for what I said:highfive:?!
hehe,. yea, , only to begin with i was countering your 'theres no doubt' remark, , but then realised i hadn't read your whole post.
Well guys, I tried cleaning. A layer of dust came of so I got excited, but it didn't work.
There also is way too much play with the cable when it's in, so yeah.
How much is that port change going to cost me?
from what I've read its not so much the price as the difficulty, , there are loads of stories of repair shops screwing it up. If you're a dab hand with a soldering iron, give it a go, or if you go to a repair shop, get down in writing what they are gonna do if they screw it up.
Yet again a good advice!
I wouldn't suggest to do it your self unless you're a soldering master: as samuel suggested there are (so called) profesionals failing to do this, just because it's tricky enough to get the job done the right way.:fingers-crossed:
Sometimes it is possible to resolve by tightening up the connector in a fashion that promotes the contact of the female to male contacts.
Done one dismantled once as easy to work on connector, basically I pushed the shorter edge in just slightly & with CARE on the female socket in the area over the contact plate thus forcing the male plug to push tighter against the contacts, also tweaked the to plug retention lugs so plug clips tightly.
Worth trying as if lucky can be a cheap easy solution & has worked fine on one I did but as only done the 1 I have no idea if it going to work for majority of worn plugs :-S
Replacing board socket is tricky & not that cheap normally as a good tech knows it a not liked or easy repair ... good luck
Thanks for the great advice everyone, I really appreciate it.

May take couple of adjustment to get it good & best do a little at a time.
Will only work if is contact issue between plugs, if issue is broken contact leg or poor connector leg solder joint to mainboard then no benefit.
Post back if get it working ...

Sure thing! I have one question, though. How do I correctly open up the device without damaging it (too much)?
Torx screwdriver and a thin credit card, there break down videos on youtube.
As above really, do your homework on stripdown & take a lot of care, back cover is easy if done right, plectrum is useful plastic tool for prying things apart or get hold of decent plastic opening tools, credit card can be used but too thick really.

WiFi antenna pin broken

Hello guys.
A few days ago, mi nexus 7 didn´t power up, tried pressing power and vol down for more than 30 seconds, nothing.
The screen turned on from time to time, but all i can see was some static.
After gathering some courage and reading a bit on the internet, i opened it and there it was, the battery plug was in an angle, doing a false contact.
I don´t know how that happened, it was working normally before, i didnt drop it, hit it, nothing.
Ok, then i push the plug and it fit, but mi finger slipped and broke one of the wifi antenna pin connector, it seems they are pretty weak...
I closed the tablet and it power up and works almost perfect, now the wifi signal sucks a lot, most of the time it can´t connect unless i´m really close to the modem/router.
What can i do? i still have the broken pin, can i solder it? or use something else to make the contact? return it to Asus for a fix? and i guess they will charge me.
Also i opened it again today, to take a picture, and i saw that the power plug again is slipping outside of his socket, i think there is a flaw in the design if the plug can´t keep is place...
Well, thanks in advance!!!

You can solder a wire from the broken pin directly to the WiFi antenna

And for the battery plug, electrical tape is your friend.

Thanks for the answers.
And... what about of the solder? i don´t know if it have the properties to transmit the wifi signal, maybe i put a wire or the pin back with solder, but if the solder doesn´t transmit the wifi signal i´m still screwed...
Sorry about my bad english, i tried my best, in spanish i could have explained it better....
Thanks!!

Solder will be fine, I put solder on the pins of my one x to strengthen the connection and boost the signal worked perfectly.
Well, last night i put a small dot of solder and put the pin back in his place, i tried it in the same spot where yesterday i had no signal and now it works perfectly!
Thanks!!!

I've had the exact same accident, well except that i broke not one but TWO pins. So basically all should i do is solder them back just like that?
About the battery connector. Mine has a black tape over the connector. It's glued from the red yellow and black cables up to the motherboard socket where the pin connects. It may be a new revision because it's one of the latests

this happened to me aswell when I took it to my local repair store they said they couldn't solder it, if I had the tools I would have a go. Any ideas as to where else I could take it to get soldered. Thanks. Also I have another nexus 7 with which I have tried all the tricks ie: hold power on, check battery etc but still nothing absolutely nothing won't turn on or show any signs of life

As a nervous amateur I would like to see this being done, what degree of heat and what size of solder wire etc are there any video footage available anywhere.
I fixed mine
actually mine also got broken ....
soldering didnt seem a good option for me
so i took one of the gold plated contact pins used for holding the sim card from an old phone and improvised ...
(you can use any of the gold plated contact pins found in old mobiles)
photos attached ...
i held it in place by insulation tape and some rubber stickers so that it wont move away ....
antenna works fine now ... full signal strength
the main thing here is to get the same material for fixing the antenna
different material would result in poor signal

G2 unresponsive screen after replacing charging flex cable

Hello
I can't charge my LG G2 D802, so I ordered a charging flex cablefrom ebay.
After replaced, the phone charges well, but the screen is almost unresponsive.
And it's very interesting, because if I replace to the old one, everything is the same, almost unresponsive screen, not like before disassembly...
Any idea what to do?
Connectors and everything looks fine, but I can't believe touch screen stop working after disassembly.
Please help if You could...
Thank You!
You disassembled the phone? If you didn't put all the components back in place as it comes from factory and taped, then there could be grounding issues. There is a set of transistors next to the lcd connector and above the charging port, make sure it's touching the golden pad on bottom and is taped.
Or else it's a bad cable, bad grounding somehow, moisture issues etc etc.
I think You're right.
The set of transistors may not connecting well.
Can I use processor pasta to glue it back?
Or just some simple tape from above?
-----------------------------------------------------------
So I cleaned it with alcohol and the original glue getting stronger, so I put it back to the right place and put some tape on it.
But still the same.
Do I have to put tape on the cables above the battery?
How could I find where is the bad grounding?

No i don't recommend to put thermal paste therez if it conductive it can short nearby components and can also get messy, it is only for using on chips. I suggest you use double sided tape, but do it strategically so that it leaves a small portion open for the golden pad to make contact. And after that you put nonconductive tape on top of that. Make sure the metal part of the white cable nearby is not touching this area, or you can also put tape between them. I suggest to put tape on the lcd connector as well.
Whenever this problem arises, and if you have trouble to fix it, an easy way is to disconnect and reconnect the battery after a few seconds, should work ok.
You can also purchase a new one like this, look for your device model - https://m.ebay.com/itm/183023879505

Seems like the set of transistors well connected now and I put tapes on it and on the screen connector as well.
And I reconnected the battery too, but nothing happened.
It's the same as before.
And if I replace the charging port flex cable to the old one, it's the same too, but before disassembly it works, but the problem was I cannot charge the phone.
Any other idea what should I do to fix it?
I cannot choose D802 on the link You gave me...
Anyway I think this one and the old one is fine if it's about the touch screen, have to be something another...

Broken part of motherboard

Hello,
When i was trying to place a new screen on my moto x style i forgot a screw and part of the motherboard fell off (picture), any motherboard experts know what this component is and if the motherboard is still 'repairable'?

To be accurate, it's not that the part fell off, but it pulled away from the motherboard. What you had pull away is simply a screw hole for keeping the frame attached to the motherboard. The good news is that it's apparently not connected to anything. You could use a small amount of high strength epoxy to reattach the screw hole to the board.
As for your inability to turn the device on, check your button cable and make sure you have that seated properly. The screw hole pulling from the motherboard isn't the source of that issue.

Oh, that makes sense, i've already tried replacing the button ribbon cable (with a new cable) so it isn't the button cable, i have no clue why it's not working. Anyway thanks for the info.

Need to know what coaxial connectors are used for the 3 internal .cables

Does anyone know the exact type and frequency of the coaxial pin connectors for the cables on the board? I was prying the cables up with plastic spudger and one popped off board and I couldn't find it. I asked Digikeys support after I narrowed it down and they told me what I already knew. He said email samsung, so I did. It has been a couple weeks since and I got no reply so far. All I know is that they are active, surface mount, male pin coaxial connectors, I think. https://www.digikey.com/short/pcdqqt
I have no idea how to find out exactly which ones I can use. Please if anyone knows, help lol.

same thing happened to me on my note 5, I aligned both cable and connectors together and pushed it in, it was some what stuck together, then I used tape to secure them there for good. I have been using same phone six months no issues. I didn't open to check, since I didn't have too.. otherwise you have to find a repair shop to put one in, if above method wont work for you.

Tape doesn't sound like a very safe idea lol. I would think it would make the inside collect more heat. That or the tape could potentially melt. The s7 edges tend to get hot especially when charging . But soon enough I may just get a soldering gun and try to just solder it on but it still doesn't sound like a good idea. I might try that and then just buy a new board if all else fails.
