Hi all,
I spent a little bit of time, trying to modify my own SamsungCamera2.apk file to remove the camera shutter sounds.
After looking into this thread, I noticed my camera version is slightly different.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2295575
So I extracted the SamsungCamera2.apk from my phone. Renamed the apk to zip file, and modified the *.ogg sound files and replaced them with silent ones. And renamed the zip back to apk. And tried to use ES File Manager to replace the one in System/App.
After replacing, I forgot to change the permissions to 644. So the whole app disappeared from my shortcuts. Now after many restarts, and restores , even the original APK, wont bring back the Camera App.
Does any one know how to restore the Camera App to my phone?
Do I need a real APK decompiler and compiler to make changes to the ogg files?
How do I fix this?
I have my modded APK and the Original APK, both of which do nothing when I place it back to the System/App. Even playing around with the SamsungCamera2.odex file does nothing.
PS: This is on Stock Firmware MEA with CF-AutoRoot applied. This is a i9505.

ok cool. Any ideas on how to apply the mod again?
Am I doing something wrong with the unpacking and packing of APK....
Or I just stuffed up the 644 permissions and lost the camera app and unable to reinstall it without flashing it again with stock?

The CSC to enable the Shutter Sound Menu, doesn't work on MEA. At least not on my XSA - MEA firmware.
The menu comes up, however you cannot select OFF.
Renaming the ogg files within /system/media/ui..... doesn;t work either.
So the ogg files are in the APK. Which I am trying to modify.
Will try to flash stock MEA to restore the Camera app, then try to replace it with the SamsungCamera2.apk again tonight....

Just read that the new version of kitkat will be out soon. For Note3 Verizon.
I have a rooted phone. My main concern is not to let the firmware automatically download. How do I stop it from downloading
Do you have a link to the article?

I have a rooted phone. If I want the Verzion version do I need to unroot to download it when it comes out?
Do I need to stop it from automatically downloading on my phone so nothings happens?
Can I go into Kies and get the new software and install it manually?
What do you suggest. My main concern is not to let it download automatically and do any damage to my phone.

IS this a trusted source? Its hard to believe Verizon will be pushing out an update anytime soon for this device.
I guess it remains to be seen!

It can't install automatically without your permission (shouldn't).
My suggestion to get the update is Odin back to 100% full stock image. Then you can take whatever OTA is at your hearts desire. Then you know everything is so fresh, so clean :good:
Then we just wait for word on root ?

That's what I'm going to do. I hear a lot of interesting things about 4.4.2 - how it breaks SD Card access etc... I am VERY happy with 4.3 with the rom I've chosen and will happily await a Clean Rom 4.4 before I even think about 4.4.
I have 4.4.2 on my Nexus 7 2013 tablet and it's good - hopefully it'll mean even better battery life. Pretty happy with the 2x battery life increase after I've rooted. Here's to hoping for more in 4.4.2.
Fyi - googled and I can't find anything about 4.4 coming to Note 3 via Verizon. Back when I had Droid 1 and HTC Thunderbolt us rooters got ICS way before it came out to the carriers. lol.
OP, do you have a link?
I disabled both Knox and the OTA update in MJE by using a root file explorer (Solid Explorer) and changing file permissions to 0000 ("---------") of a couple .apk/.odex files in /system/app (followed by rebooting) :
ContainerAgent{.apk,.odex}
ContainerEventsRelayManager{.apk,.odex}
KLMSAgent{.apk,.odex}
KnoxAgent{.apk,.odex}
KnoxAttestationAgent{.apk,.odex}
KnoxStore{.apk,.odex}
SDM{.apk,.odex}
FWUpgrade{.apk,.odex}
LocalFOTA.apk
This allows them to be restored at any time by chmod'ing them back to mode 0644 ("-rw-r--r--"). I suppose this is similar to "freezing" in TiBu. The first group are Knox-related and last three are involved in the OTA, but it might be sufficient to only disable the SDM{.apk,.odex} files.
cheers
how do I disable SDM{.apk,.odex} files. using root file explorer. I found the files I do not see anyway to disable them?

Rename them to .bak files.
If I move the file to my sd card would that do the same thing as disabling them? Would it mess up my OS not to have it in my system file.
I do not see how to rename any file? Please explain the process of renaming.

I haven't used root explorer, but I know that both Solid Explorer and ES File Manager have a way to change the file permissions mode - usually by press-and-hold on the file name, and then select "Properties" or some such from the pop-up menu.
You can also rename them if you want as suggested above (but obviously don't delete the {.apk | .odex} suffix so you won't get the two of them confused) - for instance Foo.apk -> Foo.apk.bak and Foo.odex -> Foo.odex.bak
[Edit] Also: Some root-aware file explorers make you manually remount /system in rw mode before you do anything, and some take care of it for you. If your permission changes / renaming operations fail, it's because of that. (Solid explorer just does it for you).

Usually there is a menu in your file explorer which is brought up by long-pressing on an individual file name. I would recommend you leave the files in place and either rename them or make them unreadable (mode 0000) - moving them to the SD card and back will destroy the SElinux extended attributes of the files (if any). Then a couple months from now you won't need to remember where they are. They won't do any harm just sitting there.
Do I take out work apk and put in bak instead?
Got it thanks

If you have root you can download fx file manager and the root add on from the play store or a similar root file manager. This will allow you to rename the files you need. You can move or delete them if you want. All the custom ROMs remove them without issue. Another option would be to purchase Titanium Backup Pro and freeze the apps with that. That is my preferred method with a stock rooted rom because all you have to do is unfreeze them and then unroot to take the OTA. With that in mind I would heed the advice of others and stay away from KitKat until a root method is confirmed if you value having root access.
Edit @bftb0 beat me to the answer when I was typing...
Just changed it and the app became a blank. When I put back the app and took away the bak the app did not appear again it is still a blank what do I do to get it back in system tray. Right now it is a blank page?

There will be plenty of lemmings that rush to the sea, afraid that they are going to miss something by not downloading an update on day one.
So, wait a week or two to see if any of them make it back to shore with their root privileges still intact. Their pain will be your gain. You'll also have the benefit of reading review articles on-line that will tell you if there is anything compelling in the update; my guess is that your phone already works quite well.

Extremely confusing and vague language "changed it", "the app became a blank". also "system tray" and "put back". Huh?
Don't use pronouns such as "it". Nobody knows which "it" you are talking about.
It is possible that your file browser needs to "refresh" it's listing after a file name change. Sometimes file managers have an explicit "refresh" in their menu, or in other cases, you just visit a different folder in the file manger and then return back to (e.g.) /system/app folder to get the refresh to occur.
Hopefully all you are doing is manipulating file names.
Titanium will not work with Note 3. It actually semi bricked my phone. I was told not to Install it. The app whose name I changed then changed back is still there the original icon is just not there. I think everything is OK but got nervous not seeing the icom
I think the icon just disappeared. I first changed the name as you suggested adding bak. The icon disappeared but it showed a blank page icon.Then I wanted to make sure I could put it back so I removed the bak. After I removed the bak then rebooted. The icon never appeared again? When I open file manager and look at it the symbol is a question mark.

I learned my lesson on my last phone. It was a S3 with an unlocked bootloader. I HAD to get the update despite the warnings not to. Within 10 minutes after that I tripped knox trying to get root and the wifi stopped working. That mistake cost me $400.00 for the phone N3 I have now. Verizon was "kind" enough to give me $300.00 off any new phone despite my mistake. No more going down that road for me. Yes, I am quite happy with this phone, even with the locked bootloader.

Trust me it works fine and won't brick your phone if you use it properly. At worst you would have to Odin back to stock if you deleted important files by mistake.
I don't think anything is wrong with the system. It is OK to have a ? mark instead of the icon right?
Well I was trying to follow the instructions from here to turn off the auto conversion from sms to mms whenever you enter an emoji. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2472009&page=5
Long story short I ended up with a non-functioning SMS app, and I accidentally deleted my backapp while I was moving things around. SO I guess what I'm asking is if people can give me a copy of there SecMms.apk for kitkat 4.4.2 (Ive tried adding previous versions but that doesn't seem to work). It should be located at the system/priv-app (you have to be rooted to access it). Thanks guys.

I'm using the stock Samsung n9005XXUEND6. I don't know how to extract it from the rom, If you can point me to a simple guide and a little more instructions that would help a lot. Or if you have a compatible SecMms.apk that would really make my day.
Factory reset is not an option for me, as I have not made any backups, and I have too many apps and setting for me to wipe my entire phone.

If you use FX File Explorer and the root add on it will set the permissions for you on your apps. Other files like initd files and such need the permissions manually elevated but for apps like these it's automatic. Don't forget to reboot after copying the files over.

so i think i figured out part of the problem. I didnt use the stock rom to pull them from, it was the syndicate rom ( i apparently dont know how to read when i click things). I have the G900VVRU1ANHA_G900VVZW1ANHA_VZW.zip which contains a .tar.md5 inside. Without flashing this, using odin, to my S5 how can i access the system files to pull the apk and odex? i tried one of the guides in a thread to open the tar.md5 as a .img.ext4 and then mounting the image using DiskInternals Linux Reader but it could not get the file to open after mounting it. Now im REALLY lost as to what i should do, and im just fingers crossed that replacing those 2 files is going to enable my NFC again. (im assuming so since its all that i touched, but my knowledge in this department is limited)
thanks again for all the help, i usually just search for days for answers but with this im coming up blank!
Okay, so i downloaded the /apps/ zip from this thread and copied them from my pc to my phone. Using ES File Explorer i moved them to the /system/app/ folder. They originally had rwx rwx r permissions after the move, i changed that to rw r r and rebooted. Post reboot, attempted to enable nfc through the quick menu to no avail, going into the setting and turning it on the slider turns to green but the NFC icon does not show in the notification panel, I cant scan any NFC tags, and after exiting settings and going back into them the NFC setting has reset itself to off every time. I am now at a complete loss of what to try next.
just a ps: when running syndicate rom in slot 1 (safestrap) i was able to get NFC turned on and working just fine.
lol were you on rom slot this whole time? rom slots do have issues at times such as nfc not working..

Call me dull, but I need some more stock app help.
I once again ccidentally deleted my TBackup Files while working in CleanMaster, and am now in need of a new stock app, this time the camera.
I believe it is called samsungcamera2.apk
You should really keep a stock rom on hand that you can just unzip and take what you need. It would be a lot easier than waiting for someone to post what you ask for. That's just as important as keeping a current nandroid.
I got Nandroids I got stock rooms, but all these are either in .tar or .tar.md5

There are lots of touchwiz zips around the forum. Get one and extract the music player from there.
Or simply download one from the play store.

Then either wait until somebody decided to post you the apk
Or
You can extract it yourself, which may be faster.
Good luck.

Its ok Btw thnks fr help
@ankrishx18 if you have that tar.md5 rom stored on your phone or memory card temporarily delete the last part of the file extension so it's just romsname.tar instead of romsname.tar.md5
from there you'll be able to open it with zarchiver https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ru.zdevs.zarchiver
and then extract/copy the apk from /system/apps/
you'll need to be rooted though in order to paste it into your own /system/apps/ folder and change it's permissions to 644 aka rw_ r__ r__ and then reboot.
if you have it on your PC you could try renaming it romsname.zip but I don't know if that will work (never tried it). don't forget to put it back to what it should be after
@3mel I just found this inside in system.img which was present in "rom.tar.md5"
when i try to open system.img with pc it gives me an error "The disc image file is corrupted"
and no system apps is visible inside this img
my bad I forgot that it's not like a zip would be inside.
there are 2 tools you need to open roms on PC and that's something I don't do so I can't remember the name of them. I'll see if I can hunt down the apk for you instead, but as I don't know what the original file size it should be this could be dodgy...
are you rooted ? and what version are you on ? I'll see about downloading a small custom touchwiz rom and extracting it from there for you if nobody else jumps in to help.
having trouble using the attachments here...
uploading this one stupid file took me 3 times longer than downloading the 1.1gb rom
https://www.dropbox.com/s/5rzfbgt3vuv9iia/SMusic.zip?dl=0 here is a zip file to the SMusic.apk file taken from a i9500 lollipop 5.1.1 rom that can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4/i9500-develop/rom-98-5-1-1-based-ale95-v2-t3304828
you need root to put this back into /system/priv-app/
permission will probably be 644 aka rw_ r__ r__ you'll need a root capable file browser to paste it and change the permissions. if pasting doesn't work you might need to mount system first which you can do with the terminal emulator app.
Code:
su
mount -o rw,remount /system
if needed this will let you paste into the system folder. just press enter after each line then use the file browser
reboot afterwards and test. if that doesn't work the mod you tried may have changed some library files.
