[Q] What am i doing WRONG??? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Hello!
Ok so i have a galaxy s4 for at&t. I want to install the 4.2 google edition rom on it. First time im doing this! For some reason it keeps failing. This is what Im doing:
1. Root the phone with motochopper ( i confirmed its rooted by DLing root checker app)
2. Transfer the ROM file onto the micro sd card
3. I boot in recovery by holding volume up.
4. Wipe
5. Update from sd card and select the rom file
6. It seems to be working and restarts the phone with touchwiz!
WHAT AM I DOING WRONG? Please Help.

Sounds to me like you're in stock recovery. Did you install a custom recovery after rooting?

You need to install twrp or cwm recovery

Agreed. After you install a custom recovery, OP, ya better make a backup before continuing. Cheers

Steps: Rooting GT-i9100 4.1.2

UPDATE: Applicable to any GT-i9100 4.1.2 firmwares
The most easiest way to root LS8 is to flash CWM-SuperSU-v0.97.zip through stock recovery
Advantage: NO YELLOW TRIANGLE
Steps:
1. Save file to external sd card
2. Shut down
3. Open stock recovery (press power + vol up + home button)
4. Install zip from external sd card
5. Select the file "CWM-SuperSU-v0.97.zip
Wait and reboot
For those who don't have external sd cards.. click this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1994544
Flashing the latest siyah and philz kernel can also root this rom. To remove the yellow triangle. Use triangle away of chainfire
Goodluck on rooting guys!

Just a note, for the above to work, you need an external SD, not internal from the phone.
Edit: I know you have mentioned it, but many people like me, tried to flash it from internal SD.

hi
i am pretty much newb at rooting and flashing.
i flashed the official jelly bean on my samsung s2, now i want to root it!
But i have a problem, i dont have sd card in my phone, so i have to flash using internal card.
In recovery i only have :
apply update from adb
apply update from external storage.
appy update from cache
When i chose "apply update from external storage" i get E:Failed to mount / sdccard ( No such file or directory )
I didnt tryed the two other options, as i dont have what they do/mean.
Re: Steps: Rooting xxls8 4.1.2
Since u don't have ext sdcard.
Apply update from adb.
Click the other thread above.

Thanks a lot! It works perfectly!
No option "install zip from external storage"
First time rooter here.
When I got to stock recovery (fresh install of official spanish JB firmware), the only options that I see are:
1. reboot system now
2. apply update from ADB
3. apply update from external storage
4. wipe data / factory reset
5. wipe cache partition
6. apply update from cache
Is option 3 the same as "install zip from external storage"?

This method is very good, but is there a way we can unroot the phone if we don't want root anymore at some point?

Yes. Reflash the xxls8 official firmware via ODIN

Really easy and simple and it works ....but to add CMW do I have to re-root some other method or some other kernel or is there just CMW that I can flash as zip etc....?
Perfect!! Easy way and works!!!

Hi. Has anyone been succesful at flashing Siyah without wiping the device on LS8?
When I did I could not get pass the blinking Siyah logo. After two blinks, the phone would turn itself off... Any suggestions? Thanks.
hi i want to install cwm on xxls8, searched on google found something but link was down and no way to contact the dev. so do i have to downgrad in order to install cwm/custom roms?
Well, I could flash Siyah beta4. I guess there was some problem with the stable version...
EDIT: By the way, I flashed from internal SD card. At least in my device, when it says "external sd" in stock recovery it actually points to the internal SD.

All you need to do is flash Siyah v6 beta4 via ODIN. Not only will you have a better kernel then stock but you will also have root, custom recovery (cwm), cwm manager and SU to allow/disallow root apps.

If i'm correct, I think 1) actually replaces stock recovery with a different recovery (CWM), and flashes a modified (rooted) version of the stock kernel. 2) keeps the stock recovery and kernel and only purely roots your phone.
The advantage with 1) is that you can use CWM which has a lot more features such as backing up instead of the rather useless stock recovery.
Not sure about any cons.

[Q] SoftBrick used Kies- CWM can't get recovery mode

Hi all,
Had a number of issues with my SGS4, decided it's time to wipe it out and start fresh. Thankfuly I have everything on my SD card.
Long story short, I softbricked it, none of my backups are working. I read that if I launch KIES and follow instructions it loads a new firmware and OS (factory). The problem is, I can't get it into "download" or recovery mode. I have Clockworkmod recovery on this phone.
How do I get the CWM removed in order to reboot into the default download mode that came from factory? The phones will reboot and sit at the AT&T logo. I've done everything I could think of, been 4 hours and not making progress. Please help me remove CWM and or boot into download mode so I can try and restore my SGS4. Thank you all:crying:
Did you make backups in cwm? Can you restore any of them?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I957 using xda app-developers app
Yes I tried to recover via my back ups. Some say md5 mismatch which I can't fix until I get into the OS. Other ones restore, however upon reboot it gets stuck at the ATT logo.
I am downloading the stock ROM onto a SD card as we speak, hoping to flash to it using CWM. Ultimately I would like to remove CWM and use KIES to restore/reinstall my firmware. I'm told this is considered a soft brick.

What stock rom did you download? Stock roms are generally flashed thru Odin. You don't need to get rid of cwm.

stockroms.net/ file/ GalaxyS4/SGH-I337/I337UCUAMDL I337ATTAMDL_ATT .zip
Looks like the stock rom? Figured I'd load it onto my SD card, then use CWM to flash to it. Think it'll work? It's downloading as we speak.
In an ideal word, I'd use KIES to do the firmware restore and upgrade but CWM is blocking me from my standard/stock download recovery (power button home button and volume up button)

Don't know stock roms.net. Next time use sammobile.com. my guess is the zip won't flash thru cwm. Most of them you need to extract the .tar.md5 file out of the zip and use that in Odin. You'll need 7-zip to extract it.

Well, long story short I wasn't able to mount the external SD card from CWM. Thankfully after wiping the device and cache over and over and reloading my backups over and over it finally loaded and by passed the software loop.
I am happy it's no longer a $600 piece of plastic. So, I am hoping to do a fresh image install (downloading firmware now) and doing better backups. Any recommendations on a new boot manager outside of CWM?
Any ideas for a bullet proof (or close as possible) plan to keep this from happening again? Thanks all
Bump- anyone

Unable to boot rom

I just rooted my phone recently and flashed twrp recovery. I tried flashing roms but none of them works. I'm always stuck at odin mode. I tried reading forums but I couldn't understand some of them. My s4 is i377m locked to fido. Completely noob ?

What ROMs are you flashing? Did you make sure they're for your model/flash a kernel for your model?

Make sure you stick to roms for the i337m because there are roms for the i337 (US version) in here also. You say you are stuck in odin mode which sounds like you are trying to flash with odin, you should be flashing through twrp (custom recovery).
1. boot to recovery, volume up + home + power when you see the samsung logo release the buttons
2. make a nand backup of your stock rom (Cache + system+ data)
3. make a backup of you efs
4. reboot to your stock rom, make sure you have everything backed up to your Google account (apps and contacts)
5. download a rom (mapeleaf is good, Google edition by Danvh is also good, I have used both)
6. do md5 check to ensure your download is good (there are free tools you can download to do this) the md5 is always given with the file on the download page.
7. put an i337m rom of your choice onto your external sd card, you can use your charger cable plugged into your pc (they are always a .zip file
8. reboot to recovery
9. wipe (advanced wipe in twrp) select dalvic, cache, system and internal storage if you feel brave but make sure it is internal and not your external sd card. Failure to do this step will result in a bootloop......
10. Select install and naviagte to your external sd card, select you rom zipped file.
Once twrp finishes.... reboot
11. Sign in and wait for the system to download and install all your apps....
12. Enjoy

[Q] Recovery lost?

Hello everyone! Think that I did something kinda stupid today..but not sure. I have installed cwm recovery (philz version, latest) but today I was transfering over a backup to my pc (I removed it from phone to pc), well that was what I thought..(the file was TWRP, since it was a twrp nandroid backup and I had twrp before cwm) so later, when I tried to go to recovery, I couldn't, I tried with FreeGee, but nothing happened...so does this mean that I have lost my recovery? I tried to put the files back on phone where they was but it doesn't seem like that have helped...
So any other methods to get into recovery mode? And have I lost it by deleting a twrp file containing a backup and a twrps. file on 2kb?
P.s when I look into the TWRP folder, I don't have the twrps file....is that the problem, and what is that file? Is it loki or something?
P.S 2: My phone is working fine..
Anyone?
If you're still rooted, you could install Goo Manager, which will allow you to install a recovery.

I do have root, and I am running cloudystock 1.2 (kitkat), but can I just install a recovery since I am on a stock kitkat rom? Think I have done it now.....

I had stock 4.2.2 rom when I first installed recovery, but I overwrited my twrp recovery and installed cwm (that too on stock 4.2.2 rom
Try installing Quick Boot (free in the Play Store.) It provides an easy way to boot into recovery. This should show whether CWM or TWRP are still on your phone.

You sound like you really don't know what you're mate.
I think the best advice anyone can give you is to put your phone down and read some more.
If you have successfully flashed CWM then all you need to do is flash a ROM of your choice then wipe data / factory reset.
Also before you even think about flashing anything to your phone you NEED to back up your EFS partition.

Don't panic bad it's just down to the version of recovery ?
Just go back into recovery & try flashing again once you get status 7 go back & second line from bottom where you chose zip you will see "allow update old binary" tick the box if not ticked or until if it's selected then select zip to flash & it'll go straight through
