Best method for backups - Droid RAZR M Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm quite new to using my droid razor M so I wanted to know what would be the best method to do backups. I have I believe it's called CWM on my phone but I'm having an issue with it. When I try to do a backup to an external sd or choosing just backup and ends up saying there is no sd card found but I have a 16gb sd card in my phone. Am I doing something wrong or is there a better method for backups ? Thanks for your help !

You can use TWRP and perform a nandroid backup to your external sdcard, or use Titanium Backup.

CMW works for my sdcard... No problemo...

TWRP via Rom Manager works fine? Does titanium backup save both apps and root/bootloader unlock etc? Have you ever encountered sd card not found using CWM ? I already have CWM but can I also use TWRP via rom manager without any conflict? Thanks so much to the both of you for your help !

Don't use ROM Manager, boot into recovery and back-up there.

I've tried that but each time it says no ext sd found. I've reformatted the sd card in the phone and still the same. Thanks.

how did I waste my sd card from booting android?

I was using my phone as usual pandora, browsing, etc. I was connected to computer via usb and usb storage was on. I disconnected without turning off usb storage and immediately realized my mistake. android tripped out kept restarting and would barely make it past cyanogen splash before restarting again untill I pulled the battery. now that card will not boot haret loads but gets stuck on black screen with linux penguin. not just the build I disconnected usb from any build on sd is a no go.
so I backed up all my files on the sd card reformatted the card and restored files. still no go. now the same hyperdroid 1.6 folder I had on 16g card (first) is booting fine on another 8g sd card?
how can I restore my 16g? it functions fine in any other way. even backtrack 4 installation is booting when using as usb hdd(my phone is the micro usb adapter)
before Im grilled I did search however I may not have used correct keywords.

You may try deleting your data image and giving it a fresh one with a complete load. If you use titanium backup from market you can restore all your apps.
There may be something in the data.img that wont allow you to boot.
I could be way off but its worth a try. Best of luck.

I had something similar happen when I ran out of power while rebooting. Formatting in windows didn't fix it. Formatting using the SD formatter couldn't complete. Eventually, I did a wipe disk using another program. Then used SD formatter and it worked. Hope that helps.
I tried your method however I cannot for the life of me figure out titanium backup. I created an update.zip using program however I cannot get build into recovery mode also I cannot find even a hint of how to restore the backup I made in the program or using google.

I'd all your apps are backed up then get it booted into android start titanium backup and look for the batch option in the menu. Then choose the option to restore user apps and go from there.

Downgrading cyanogenmod 7 to cyanogenmod 6

For future reference, if I find any bugs with the latest version of cyanogenmod 7, how do I downgrade to a stable version of cyanogenmod 6?
Tonight is a big night for all CyanogenMod 7 user we expecting RC1!!!
Use ROM Manager to install a 2.5.* version of Clockwork Mod (this is the last option in the menu). Then go to Clockwork Mod and either flash a non-CM7 ROM or restore a backup.

[Q] hudge problem with sd card

Hello. I have a hudge problem with my phone. Somehow it automatically unmounts and remounts my sd card for no reason no matter what rom I use. Sometimes it unmounts my sd card and don't mount for a month. Sometimes it gives damaged sd card error and asks to format it but when I insert my card to tablet and it detects no errors. What could be the problem? Can anyone help me fix this?
Repartition your SD card in recovery
But save your data first

You must clearing ext partition in recovery and format sdcard. + set min cpu fraquancy on 245Mhz.
didn't help
If it does happen with all roms you've tested, including stock 2.1 then your SD card is propably faulty. You formatted it under Windows?

I can't try stock rom because it says that my recovery is to new. SD card can't be faulty because it is new. I had other sd card earlier but my phone didn't recognized it so I bought new. And i have formatted under Windows.

Then you have to check different roms and kernels to see under which your SD card works properly. I suggest trying newest AOSP / SDSL or CM 7.2 by Tejas build three.
Maybe is the slot of your SD Card, Why?:
Using every ROM, same device and same problem = device
Used other device and everything ok = the "other" device
So, definitely your slot on your device is bad. Good Luck!

Just delete all partitions and make new (FAT32) with some Live CD if U don't have Linux on PC (for best get gParted Live).
Next put it in Your phone and partition again with CWM 6.0, or just use fat32.
Some customized roms mess up sd card if it has /swap.
Noticed this in some 2.3 custom rom, but don't remember name of it.

Use of storage card by the S4

So from what I understand, apps cannot be installed to the storage card on the S4, correct? Is this fixable with root or maybe a custom ROM? Also, when recording video, will the S4 at least be able to write to the storage card when doing that? And for something like Orange Backup that can create nandroids while in Android, does anyone know if it will be able to write to the storage card? I assume that recoveries like TWRP and CW will have no issue recognizing the card and installing zips from them?
Yes, you can tell the camera to use the SD card. Not sure about Orange Backup, but I've got TWRP on my S4 and it gave me the option of using the SD card, which I took advantage of.
Can't answer your question about custom ROM's being able to give us the app storage transfer to SD option. That would be nice, though.

Not every app. Some give you the choice to use the SD card, some don't. And if the app does not give you the choice, it's hard to move the app/data to the SD card for most programs on this release of Android OS.
There are some threads on possible work arounds, but I've read mixed results on them so far.

SD card mount problem in recovery

hi to all,
i have a problem with mounting sd card in recovery. I tried to change recovery (CWM--->TWRP) but every time i try to install a package it said "can't mount sd card" or something like that. I tried with other sd card (kingston, transcend, toshiba, a-date) and only a few works and I don't know why.
Can someone help me, please?
P.S.
I tried also with different file system but nothing

I tried to boot in android and the reboot in recovery and I tried also to boot in recovery and then reboot in recovery but nothing. Few times it worked, but now it doesn't work anymore
P.S.
When I boot in android always it says "empty card or unsopported filesystem" but all works normally.
P.P.S.
I have rittik v 2.0
use only cwm 5.0.2.7 .Its the only one with no bugs.Except that you have to reboot recovery before flashing a zip,but thats no big deal.
5.0.2.7 is pretty good but 6.0.1.5 (I think) has no problems.
Bronxitas posted a zip for a fixed 5.0.2.7
On to the top issue, try booting into recovery while plugged into a computer/power supply.
Take out the battery and sd card.
Then reboot recovery. Put in the sd card and battery.
Reboot recovery again. There.
Note: before you do this, check your mounts to make sure emmc and sdcard is enabled.

i had pretty major problems with 6.0.1.5 like not even recognizing my sd card! (16gb class 10)
And i think it uses a different folder structure than 5.0.2.7 when creating back ups.If i remember correctly someone was trying to restore or open a specific file from a 6.0.1.5 backup and he couldn't because of new compression method used or something?

korekore1 are SD cards divided in classes? That means the higher the better? What's the biggest class for an SD card? Is this guy using a -51? People with the -51 have reported SD Mount problems in recovery.

You can change the backup selections as Pika said once in some option in 6.0.1.5 to restore the 5.0.2.7 backup but you have to change the way the restore is saved: tar, etc...

Yes and no, Class 4 and Class 10 are often the most common and recommended sd cards. Class 10 editions are newer to the market whereas class 4 has been here for a while. Class 10 achieves a faster R/W speed but class 4 is recommended for the novice user:
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2388408,00.asp
No one with the -51 reported any mounting errors. I would know if they did... Please don't assume anything unless you have one.
The hardware tree is virtually identical to the pro with the exception of wifi and bluetooth as well as processor.

not even before flashing zips with 5.0.2.7?You don't have to reboot recovery?
yesterday i tried to format a 512MB sd card in fat32 with default value and then i copied the zip file i had to flash on the sd card, i insert it in the phone then restarted in recovery and TWRP found it :victory:

I'm using TWRP since 15th April.
My sdcard jack was replaced on 18th April.
So.... I've tested "only" TWRP with the new jack.
Earlier (with the old jack) even TWRP also needed rebooting to actually read the sdcard..
My PC is not working, so I can't dare to test other recoveries.
