[Q] Proper way of Flashing Custom ROMs (AOKP etc..) - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys,
Good to be part of the Android family here.
I just got a question to ask in behalf of all Noobs here.
Can anyone enlightened us on the proper way and procedure to flash another ROM if we have already done so,
like, if my ROM has an update, what should I do? In the proper way... Wipe? Dalvik Cache?
Currently I'm running Jamal's GE Jelly Bean AOSP ROM on my S4. I have had a soft-brick experience with mine and I don't wanna screw it up again. Going through Odin and Re-Root is really a chore, and bad for my phone(? perhaps?)
Thanks guys.
Cheers.

If u wanna update the same Rom u have mostly wipe cache and wipe dalvik cache and install the Rom and rebooot
Again it depends check the installation procedure given on the Rom "OP" only he will know best whether the Rom is full wipe or no wipe
And if u wanna install a new Rom
From recovery wipe data/factory reset wipe cache / wipe dalvik cache... Then install Rom and reboot all done
Edit always have a nandroid backup in pc or sd card to be on the safer side
.

Got it thanks a mill!

Stock ICS 4.0.3 to Team EOS 4.0.3?

Hey all still a newb here so posting the question here. Now Ive got myself to 3.2.2 rooted it and then got stock rooted 4.0.3 ics on it. Everything run sweet after ready threads I think the Team EOS build seems better.
So my question is how would I go to the build from what I have now. Ive read the thread but it lacking a bit of info and somewhat confusing. Im thinking I do a complete wipe from recovery (which is clockwork) then flash build zip from sd. then flash gapp.zip (google apps) from sd...
Is this correct? I just want to make sure.
Thanks everyone!

This is correct.
Wipe Data (Factory Reset), wipe cache, wipe dalvik-cache and battery stats.
flash the build zip and gapp.zip from SD and you're all set.
thanks!

If you have CWM recovery installed you can just flash the most current Eos nightly build --if you're wifi-only then it's wingray build #44, and then right after, flash the Eos GApps v 10.3. You will have to wipe your cache partitions and go to advanced and wipe dalvik cache. You might get away without a data wipe, but if things get unstable (due to new version of GApps) you'll have to wipe.
Make sure to make a nandroid backup first.
nice.

I was lucky and hadn't put too much on it. So the wipe wasn't a big deal, if I'm right don't have to wipe every time to update build so was worth it. As a lot say my Xoom a lot snappier now. Would recommend doing it!
Wiping is usually the best way to go. There are workarounds, but the effort it takes to do so kinda outweighs the result.
so my question is....
im new over here, and fairly new to xoom and modding and what not.... anyway would i let the xoom update to 4.0.3 then flash to the nightly?
this is where im lost cause im on 3.2 right now, im unlocked, rooted and have cwm 3.2.0.0 ( US ver wifi only )
i want to finally get a custom rom on here but not sure what to go with?

I went from a rooted tiamat 3.2 rom to a nightly and it worked fine. I would do a wipe within clockwork recovery before flashin the new rom. Also remember to use titanium backup to backup your stuff first...

Are you still rooted and do you have CWM recovery installed? If yes, it's easy to flash Eos ICS. You go to the correct thread for your device, download the latest Eos ICS rom, the latest Eos GApps v 10.3, put them on your micro sdcard (or internal storage, depending on what CWM recovery you have), boot into recovery, do a nandroid backup, do a data wipe/factory reset, wipe cache and dalvik cache, then flash the rom and the GApps zips one after the other all in the same recovery session, without a reboot inbetween. Then, reboot into Eos ICS goodness! Get all set-up and you're good to go. It will help if you do a full backup of all user apps and data in Titanium Backup and then, after your wipe, do a batch restore of "missing apps and data."

When first flashing a nightly a nandroid backup is recommended but it's not that necessary when going from your first nightly to another nightly. At least I don't do that because I'd rather hasten the whole data wipe/flash process and it works for me.

Question about flashing ROMS

I've searched for this question but can't find it. When I flash a rom do I wipe the cache before or after I install the rom?
Thank you

You are correct. But I didn't post enough information in my question. I am specifically asking about upgrading from an earlier version of the same rom. Jokersax cm9 thread says that when UPGRADING from an earlier version of cm9, I only flash cm9 and flash gapps. However, I have read multiple posts from xda and other websites where people recommend wiping during the upgrade process. I haven't found a single post stating whether to wipe before or after flashing. I want to make sure I correctly install the update and the confusion comes because cm7's thread says to flash then wipe, and jokersax cm9 says to wipe then flash. But like I said, it says nothing of wiping when upgrading to another version of cm9. Considering the number of posts that recommend wiping during an upgrade, I would just like to know if I wipe then flash or vice versa. Sorry for being a noob

I always wipe cache and dalvik just to be safe. If the rom I'm flashing specifically says to wipe data/factory reset or fastboot -w then I do that also. Or if going to ics from gingerbread or vice versa I always do a full wipe. If just updating the same rom I would just wipe cache and dalvik.

Ok but when UPDATING a ROM do you wipe before flashing or wipe after flashing?
My fear is that I wipe after flashing and it erases my update
I flash everything before and after and have never gotten into a bootloop after i started doing that, just don't wipe data after you flash some casue you'll discover there's no keyboard

Sorry I don't understand you. Are you saying you flash the upgrade, then wipe, then flash again? And never wipe data after flashing, but it's ok to wipe cache after flashing ?

[Q] Slimbean 4.2.2 build 3 to build 5 possible?

I didn't want to bother the team by sending them through the "important question form" webpage.
Neither can I ask them on the development thread on XDA.
I am currently on the slimbean 4.2.2 build 3. Going to build4 the team recommend a full wipe, but then the update of build-5 did not specify such step. I wonder if that means from build-3 to build-5 an easy wipe (wipe cache and dalvik only and flash the latest build-5 rom) is sufficient to make a successful update.

To be honest this is never advised. Too many artifacts from the prior rom can cause issues. IT is always best to do a full wipe before flashing another rom. Be it update or not.

Most of the time it doesn't matter. An update that specifies a wipe should have a wipe during the process. A build after a build that specifies a wipe should have a wipe during the install if a wipe hasn't yet been applied.
So yes, OP you should wipe from 3-5 as 5 is built off of 4 which requires a wipe.

[Q] I don't want to ruin my phone! any experts around?

Hey guys!
I just got my GS3 rooted and installed the touch version of cwm and now am thinking of flashing a custom rom of my choice.
Now before I flashed anything I used the GS3 Toolkit to backup all my device and when I came to dig deeper on how to flash my GS3 I was left with one unanswered question that I couldn't find an answer to. My android version on my current device is 4.1.2 but the rom I want to flash (Dirty Unicorn) is based on 4.3.1. can I just flash it normally or are there a few steps involved to prevent my device from being bricked?
Thanks in advance I hope this helps someone out there as well
Lots of love,
A rookie passionate about Android!
No, I have flashed flashed DU a few times and even dirty flashed it over PA. You shouldn't have any trouble just make sure you follow the directions to the letter and make a backup first.
Good Luck.
Dnt forget to backup your EFS if you want to get back to 4.1.x or 4.2.x
sent from sgs3 -stock 4.3 open europe rom
Just a nandroid backup in the recovery on your external sd card, wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, (and then i usually format system) for a clean install. Then go to install zip and choose your zip.
Don't forget to place your rom on your external sd card so you won't format it by mistake( I already did so, just be carefull and take your time):good:

[Q] ROM Downgrading nexus 4

Hello everyone, I am a newbie in flashing ROM's rooting etc.
I am currently running on CM11 on my nexus 4 with android version 4.4.4 . I want to flash a CM11 based rom for my nexus 4 which is 4.4.2. Do I need to wipe data before flashing it?
ROM LINK THAT I AM GOING TO FLASH http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/development/rom-xl-z1-rom-v2-0-xperia-z1-style-t2630043
Thanks in advance!!
Make a nandroid backup of your current ROM and flash the new ROM after wiping cache, Dalvik, and system. If the phone bootloops, wipe the data in recovery. If the phone then boots, you know that some of the apps may not be compatible.
Thanks

Another option would be to use titanium back-up user apps, wipe data and then flash new rom. (definently shoul do an nandroid regardless)
