Alright, I think I may have messed up...
So I connected my i9500 through USB to try and get access to SDcard to transfer/make folders. Turns out it only connects in MTP mode, and I cant find the option to turn on UMS and disable MTP.
Is there a way to get USB mass storage mode when I connect via USB cable without having to root or install a custom rom?
Mainly though I transferred 1 file in MTP mode and now when I go to that folder with ES file explorer, the whole foldert doesn't exist anymore. Is there anyway I can get it back my files back / folder back??
is there anyway to get universal mass storage without 3rd party apps or ROM??

Well, when I connect the device to my PC in order to transfer files to it, it shows the contents of the SD folder, which is fine. I transfer my files inside, which is also fine, but when I disconnect/change the connection mode to 'charge only', I attempt to access the files on the ES Explorer, only to find that the file is not there.
If I connect it to the PC once more, the file is shown (on the PC, the Android doesn't show it).
So for now, what I do, is reboot, transfer all the files in wm, and then boot Android. But I don't think that's a solution.
I have this rom
Thanks in advance.
OK, to get to this message, I had to read a warning about getting banned if not a developer thread.
Well, this is. Sort of.
I posted a question in the general forum and commented on the same subject in the Q&A forum. I think I know my answer but I would like to know why this problem exists.
I just got my tablet Friday evening. I figured it all out and was able to use external storage on drives and USB sticks. When I try to connect my phone as a disk drive, no files.
I am assuming that access to these files is for lack of root access, which I am not going to get because I immediately let it update to 3.2.
So, could someone tell me if lack of root is the answer and why? The phone does instantly show up as a disk drive on XP and Windows 7.
Thanks, and moderators, please don't kick me out.
Did you try mounting your phone, if you can? And yes root it would be easier with the usb mount app, or just use an app like es file explorer that can go into the root section without root then go to mnt and in one of those files should be your phone files, because i have an env touch and i use usb mass storage and it shows up on my iconia
Thanks. Yes, I did see the folder MNT but it did not show up. Using my usual file explorers, I can see the internal storage and the SD card. The next entry is the USB STORAGE where I find no files when the phone is connected.
If I connect an external drive or usb memory device, I can access all the files. When I connect the phone as a drive I see that nothing is there.
When I connect these same devices to my home pc running Win 7 and laptop with XP, they all connect the same way.
There is something in the OS that is not letting my tablet file system see my phone file system.
Thanks for the reply, I'll keep my eye on this thread.
I'm having the same problem, i can import photos or videos from the phone when the phone is on mtp mode (media transfer protocol) but when in file transfer mode (msc) nothing shows up in the mnt folder or in drive mount app. i'm running taboonay 2.2 with villain kernel. It works fine with external hdd ntfs or fat. When connecting the phone to my computer i had to install a driver from windows update and it shows as an xperia arc, do i also need a driver in my tablet? Has anyone already connected and android phone to an android tablet in mass storage mode?

Not sure Root has anything to do with it. I'm rooted on both phone and tab , and have no access to the files on my phone. When in "disk drive" mode, all it does is "charge".
So my last Android phone the Samsung Captivate had USB Mass Storage support, and the phone would show up as a drive on Windows Explorer. This Nexus has only MTP and Photo transfer support.
Both seem to show up properly on my computer, however, when I try to transfer an entire folder to my computer (Titanium Backup), it will only transfer the folder and none of the contents. If I try to do a select all, it will only transfer one or two of the backup files in titanium backup. This is very annoying, what am I doing wrong? Is there a way to get USB Mass Storage support?
I also tried mounting it through TWRP recovery but this doesn't work at all.
I accidentally deleted some important photos which stored in my S4's internal SDCard. So I connected my phone to PC through USB cable, and plan to run some recovery tools from PC to get them back. However, when connected, my S4's identified as MTP (portable media device) rather than USB Mass Storage, therefore those recovery tools can't do anything.
I googled the net and found some apks that help my phone to switch between MTP/USB mode, however this method only works for external SDCard.
Any ways to retrieve accidentally deleted files? Thank you in advance!
p.s. I do heard about that flash TWRP in will help the PC identify the phone as a USB Mass Storage Device, is this true? If it's true, how do I do it?
Thx!!!

Thanks, but no this was exactly the app I used, it can't mount the internal card. If you read carefully the author also says 'It will never be able to export the internal storage on the device.' All my deleted pics are on the internal card so....
I've tried googling this, I'm finding a thousand articles that aren't related to what I want to do.
I want to plug in my phone via USB and be able to see what is taking up so much room and then transfer those files using my computer.
I don't want to connect it as a media device or camera.
I can't remember how I did that before or if I'm thinking of my old skyrocket.
PS. I booted to recovery mode and plugged it in, it's not recognizing on my computer in recovery mode.
USB Mass Storage was removed by Google in Android 4.1.2.

With the MTP mode (Media Transfer Protocol) you can transfer all types of files
Check the current USB settings with *#0808#
I use the program
http://www.jam-software.com/treesize_free/
But I guess that you can't use that for internal storage. Just USB mounted SD card.
