got the google edition in the mail today and set up the PTA apn to try to get LTE on it...
out of the box i got no data at all and the PTA apn doesnt work either.
im stuck usning the old cingular WAP for H+ on it ... called att AND google at the same time and ATT is sayng they cant guarantee i will get LTE since its not an ATT branded phone. Google is saying it should work and told ATT they are full of **** essentially..
any help?
man, if it were me I would call att and ask for a level 2 tech, it is brand new with no LTE data, they will hook you up.
The first level people at att read basic answers out of a manual in front of them.

Sounds like they didn't give you the lte data plan.... Try the phone APN should give you lte also. WAP won't give you lte

i didnt have an LTE plan... I came from an international GS2 using an old Grandfathered data plan from the early 2000's for 30 a month.
end of last year, in fear of losing all the iphone users, they created an unlimited LTE plan for 30 a month to keep the iphone5 converts onboard
this plan is supposed to be the same as my old one, but with LTE speeds..
called and they swapped it... i now get data on the Phone APN.... but H+ only... no LTE
i got some improvement, not complete.
they also submitted a case with my IMEI to see if they can cover it, which might give me LTE access... however too many people i know have the international 9505 who just dropped in a sim and got LTE that this shouldnt be an issue

This is the same problem i'm having, but no one is offering to open a case to see if they can cover it.
I noticed the preferred network mode option isn't there. Wonder if that might be it and the *#*# code for it might let me choose...

went by att store and the guy there said it happens all the time with devices from south america (im in miami)
went to the back, grabbed an IMEI off a boxes device. applied that to my account... BAM ... LTE
So what happens to the person who buys that phone that he snagged the IMEI from? and they activate it? This is not good.

apparantly they do it all the time with alot of tablets and phones coming in from south america..
But it will throw a red flag on your device, in other words, as soon as the network see's 2 IMEI show up, they lock both devices.
Oh well, just asking, no biggie.

I have an ATT S4 that is Stock ROM but I have Rooted and placed Custom Recovery on it. When I use phone code *#*#4636#*#* Under Device Options I show I am on "WCDMA preferred" and I can use pull down screen to get several other Options but it will not let me change to anything else. Now I am in an Area that does has 4g not LTE but I was in area recently that had LTE but my phone never showed I was getting LTE. Now this may not relate to the OP but thought I would pass on some info.
I have the same problem but no luck with AT&T support nor Google. Google offer to send me a replacement but don't have confident that it will work since the Google Play version of S4 IMEI number doesn't seem to pass onto AT&T :crying:

As title says, I've experienced some ridiculously slow data from AT&T. I tried different APNs:
1. Cingular 410, the APN is wap.cingular. This is the default APN that the phone comes with. The first time I popped in the SIM card, this APN is preset.
2. APN setting I used on my previous N7000.
APN: PhoneMMSC: http://mmsc.mobile.att.net
MMS Proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net
MMS port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
3. APN setting discovered in the forum.

MCC: 310
MNC: 410
The first and third setup worked, but the speed is like 0.3Mbps... When I initially tried the third setup, the speed was good at ~6Mbps. Then, a day or two later, I found the speed becomes 0.3Mbps. So eventually I got a little mad and called ATT tonight. The rep made some good effort and *refreshed* my network, and had me revert back to default setting, i.e., the first APN. The speed is still 0.xMbps. I believe ATT is throttling my device because both no.2 and no.3 setup work flawlessly on my N7000.
So the issue is now at a deadend... The rep can no longer help me because she can't just switch me to i317's LTE network.
I just want to see what everyone else on AT&T's network is using for your N7100. I'll give it a try and see if my device is indeed being throttled by ATT by comparing my speed with yours. If I still get the same slow speed when using an APN that's proved to work on our phone, I can basically conclude that my device is throttled.
In that case, I guess I'll have to go into the store to find an IMEI

I wasn't really. Here is the situation. Before my N7100, I used N7000 with HSPA+ perfectly on AT&T's network. Before all that, I was on iPhone's 3G plan. I don't know if I need to change a sim card or whatnot. I do hope it's just the wrong APN i'm using and not that my device is being throttled by AT&T or something
I have n7100 on AT&T and the speeds are excellent for me. I'm getting around 6to 7 Mbps download and around 2 upload. Go get a dumbphone imei and call AT&T and add it to your account, don't tell them it's Samsung note international!!!! Also get unlimited data plan for 15$.
U should be all set.

I put my sim from my S3 into the n7100 and off I went...They will show the n7100 as an 'unidentified phone' and will not provision it to 4g, only 2g if you you are getting a new sim for it...BUT they should be able to 'backdoor' your provision via the techs if you insist on it, so I am told anyway.

I did tell the rep about the international version. She told me she can't help unless I have an ATT device imei.
So I told her that I'll find one and have her call me back tonight. Are you actually suggesting a dumbphone imei? I was planning on getting on off of GNote2 at my att store.

I used to have that kind of speed on my N7000 and I did not need to do anything, i just popped sim card from my iPhone into N7000. But this time, it looks like the same thing can't be done again. I am still trying to find the root problem.
Do you mind telling me the APN settings of your devices?

I think somehow I deleted my last post. But anyway use the Cingular 410 apn setting.
Also, see if you can get an imei number from an AT&T android phone and use that.

Do you have any other phones in your house?
Like a old prepaid phone or something? You can try the imei # on those phone.
I actually have a old se t610 and n79 laying around just for that reason...

I sure have some phones around. But they are all *smartphones by definition. I thought about using N7000's IMEI, iPhone 4's imei, or even iPhone 3GS' imei. But I'm not sure if it'll work. Because i'm afraid that they'll change my division in accordance to the new imei i provide. The purpose of using an imei off one of i317 in the att store was to get me into the right provision (even though n7100 does not have LTE, i bet it can handle the HSPA+ that's also provided in the LTE provision in AT&T). So that was what i was trying to do.
But i'm really confused about this. I was supposed to be in whichever provision the iPhone 4 users are in (that was the last phone I signed through AT&T), and my N7000 could handle it well, but it now fails on my Note 2. Before the call to AT&T yesterday, I must have been in the "iPhone 4 provision", which I still got extremely slow data on my Note 2. So I'm now trying to update them with an i317 imei and see if my data speed gets better.
Also, as OP noted, the same APN settings from Note 1 can no longer be used on Note 2, the data network won't register with Note 2 at all.
I feel like i'm currently struggling in a s***hole.

I got a new IMEI from i317 today, and a new LTE SIM card from ATT store. They didn't bother asking why I need it for, just gave it to me.
And I came back home. The lady from ATT called me as promised. New IMEI is registered, new SIM is activated, everything is setup. I have the APN set to "pta" and it is working. Well, the speed is only a little better at 1.5Mbps... This is way much worse than what girlfriend is getting on his iPhone 5 at the same location. She has 6~7Mbps right next to me
I need to dig deeper I guess...

Just wondering do you have any imei number from a dumbphone, if you do just use that and sign up for the medianet plan. It seem like AT&T want to give you extra trouble for being honest with them.

Hi Sorry, I should've asked you earlier. I did not understand the process. Is medianet any good in speed? And how do I *sign up for it?
Also, I want to update. It is really weird right now. Out of 4 speedtest.net test I did tonight, 2 of them went up to 7Mbps (amazing), while 2 of them was up to only 1-2Mbps. I only have 200MB per month, so I can't go further on testing w/o knowing that it will likely to work good (7Mbps). I am really confused...

Thanks man.
Two issues I discovered through that thread. 1. it looks like some people get flagged, but it is not my biggest concern; 2. my biggest concern is the speed, as I'm not a heavy user of the mobile data, i get fast wifi at school and kinda fast wifi at home. So unlimited data is not my first priority. i do need, however, as fast as possible whenever I use the data to find information on the internet when on-the-go. Thanks for your help btw

I guess I need to start calling att again. Just tell them that I want to switch to medianet because i have a dumbphone and here is the IMEI number?
Google for an Atrix IMEI.
Call AT&T, give it to them. Be specific and make sure they put you on a 4G HSPA+ plan (appropriate for an Atrix IMEI). This is required or you will get dumbphone (i.e. infuriatingly slow) speeds. The Atrix IMEI will allow AT&T's system to provision the proper plan (the Note 2 or any other imported phone's IMEI will not - it will force the slower plan).

I had to do this with my GNEX. When I gave AT&T the real IMEI of the phone, the data was VERY slow. Like 300kbps slow. I googled a ton and discovered that they had put me on a regular 3g plan (not HSPA+) so my data was very slow. The GNEX I had was pre-Google Play and was imported from the UK, so it wasn't in their system at all as a HSPA+ capable phone/IMEI. After giving them a fake Atrix IMEI, (I created one and validated it online) my data now flies regardless of what unlocked phone my SIM is in. It's the best solution. My phone shows up as a flip phone online, so they don't even know/care what I'm using. I do pay $50 for 5gigs of data because I need legit tethering without faking browser agents, etc but oh well.
My N7100 on AT&T with the Atrix IMEI on my account flies. Like 8 mpbs, 6 average. Very fast.

Are you on the Unlimated Data Plan the older grandfathered plan?
If so your prob being throttled for using over 3GB or 5GB
I've seen this come up on several threads and I get chats about it all the time. I work for Consumer Data Support at AT&T. This is not an official AT&T statement, just trying to help out my fellow Nexus users. This will only apply if you have an actual AT&T account, not pre-paid service or third party service. When you get your N4, you need to have an AT&T microSIM that is either active or new. Any SIM that was used previously and taken off of an account is no good.
Call or chat in to AT&T and tell them you need to update your equipment. Give them the IMEI (dial *#06#) and the ICCID from your SIM if it's new. Your IMEI should come up as an LG E960. Tell them to update your data plan to HSPA+. If you're already on an android-based LTE or HSPA+ data plan then you're good to go on all this so far. Changing the data plan will not kick you off of a grandfathered data plan (ie unlimited data). Oh, and of courese, you will only get HSPA+ speeds if you are in the right coverage area.
The most important part is the next step, the reason everyone's getting crappy speeds is the APN. LG programed the default AT&T APN as wap.cingular, that's an old APN. Use the following settings and restart your phone. You should be all set.

*On another note, if you're trying the LTE hack, you will need to have an LTE data plan on your account. Which means you need an IMEI for an LTE phone (one that AT&T will recognize) on your account for them to add the LTE plan. Once you've got that use the same APN settings, but change the APN from 'phone' to 'pta'.
I'll be happy to answer any questions on this, however if you want AT&T policy info or to ***** about your service I'm going to tell you to go to the AT&T website or to call 611.

Hey man...this kicks ass. I'm REALLY hoping this solves my odd network issues. I can surf the web and use Spotify/Pandora, among other things, all day no problem but Facebook rarely works (yet I get notifications...), I can't SEND email (yet I receive it...) and the speedtest app errors out after the ping test.
Can you get me that MMSC? PM...text message...whatever, I don't care. Hoping this would fix these couple issues and make my phone perfect!

Will the differences in these particular settings actually make any difference in the real world?

I don't see the IPv6 making a difference unless you're using something that requires it. As far as the APN type, what I posted is what I've been using, I'm not really sure what function those other types imply.

I've been trying every combination available and the typical data I get is 3M down and 1M up. Occasionally can get up to 5m down. Coming from a Skyrocket that got 20+ this is a real bummer.
Is there any advantage to running the APN at "phone" versus "pta"? Doesn't seem to change the download.
Setting IPv4/IPv6 was what was causing my data to drop out when leaving WiFi. The phone would be in this constant loop of data on/off until I toggled airplane mode on and off. One I changed the settings to IPv4 only, I haven't had an issue in weeks.

If you still have the LTE plan on your line, the PTA APN should work fine. I haven't personally tested it though. You can always change it to phone and test it out. The other settings are the same between the two.

I did have problems using IPv4/IPv6 as well, that was on StraightTalk. Not sure how it effects devices on AT&T, based on this though I would recommend keeping it on straight IPv4 unless 6 is needed.

That doesn't quite work. I'm on a shared data plan (unlimited everything), but AT&T will not (or cannot) upgrade the data plan for 4G unless you have an IMEI number of a phone they recognize as 4G capable.
After I got my phone I went into an AT&T store to get a new micro sim card and activate the phone on the network. When I got home I noticed my download speeds were only 0.01Mbps!!!! Did some research and found the APN was for a 2G phone. I created new APN configurations for both "phone" and "pta" with all the proper settings. I can now see a gray H above the signal bars, but download speeds are still below 3M because the data plan is throttling me to 3G speeds.
I called twice to AT&T's call center and went back to the AT&T retail store to ask them to update my plan to HSPA+, but every time I give my Nexus 4 IMEI number, they say they cannot change the plan to say Smartphone for 4G... all they can give me is a smartphone data plan for 3G. AT&T's database for IMEI numbers does NOT recognize a Nexus 4 as 4G capable so their system will not allow reps to change a customer's plan to 4G. I've reported this to Google support and they are checking into it.
Kinda sad to think all these Nexus 4 customers getting a great phone, but then having poor data speeds when using AT&T. Even the need to create new APNs is impossible for most people... how would a normal person even know to do that? So they are using a fantastic phone, but with a wap APN and 2G speeds! How stupid is that?
If you work for AT&T, can you explain how to get AT&T to recognize that a Nexus 4 is a 4G phone and allow setup and configurations to support the phone properly on a HSPA data plan?

If your previous phone was a skyrocket(LTE capable device), I'm assuming your plan is provisioned for 4g. You do realize you wont get the same speeds with the N4 vs skyrocket no matter what settings you try.

After I got my phone I went into an AT&T store to get a new micro sim card and activate the phone on the network. When I got home I noticed my download speeds were only 0.01Mbps!!!! Did some research and found the APN was for a 2G phone. I created new APN configurations for both "phone" and "pta" with all the proper settings. I can now see a gray H above the signal bars, but download speeds are still below 3M because the data plan is throttling me to 3G speeds.
I called twice to AT&T's call center and went back to the AT&T retail store to ask them to update my plan to HSPA+, but every time I give my Nexus 4 IMEI number, they say they cannot change the plan to say Smartphone for 4G... all they can give me is a smartphone data plan for 3G. Even the need to create new APNs is impossible for most people... how would a normal person even know to do that? So they are using a fantastic phone, but with a wap APN and 2G speeds! How stupid is that?
If you work for AT&T, can you explain how to get AT&T to recognize that a Nexus 4 is a 4G phone and allow setup and configurations to support the phone properly on a HSPA data plan?

I'm on the DataPro plan with my N4. If they can't switch your plan to an appropriate HSPA+ here's what you can do;
Walk into an ATT store or Best Buy(BB) and grab the IMEI number from one of their 4g capable phones(demo unit). Call them back with that IMEI and they can switch it.

Right, the IMEI must be recognized by the system as HSPA+ / LTE / Etc to get the right plan.

The H data tag is for HSDPA, it's still 3G just better, but not quite HSPA+. I usually have H, and the phone will cycle between H and H+ depending on what I'm doing.

This is odd, how long ago did you try contacting us? Back in Dec when the N4 came out, we did not have the IMEIs, so this would definitely happen. LG has since sent us the IMEI range though, so all of the N4's should come up as LG E960s and have the right data plan. If you're on a Mobile Share account, then as long as the phone is listed as 4G you're all set. Try chatting in via the website and request to talk to someone in CDS, the data support team is your best shot at fixing something like this.

I'm aware of that "hack" and even mentioned it to call rep, but they said it was illegal to do it. I also had a heated discussion with an AT&T supervisor over the issue... even though I'm paying for 4G speeds and have a phone they didn't need to subsidize I still can't get them to accurately update their N4 records nor just change a data plan setting in their system to allow me to use what I'm paying for... extremely frustrating!
Google and LG really should take some responsibility for resolving the problem since they are selling the phone.

Does your H stay gray or turn blue like the bars? I'm assuming the gray means HSPA is available, but blue means it's actively using 4G.

Well, I would call back and speak to someone else. I'm using the IMEI number from my SGS2(i777) without any issue.

The data tag does not turn colors, it will still be grey on H+ as well.

Those are both LTE phones, the mobile share plans have less complicated codes. The only two options are LTE and everything else, if you are on the 'smartphone' plan then it should be right. 3mbps down is low, but it's still an 'acceptable' HSPA+ speed.

Yea, if you ask to transfer they should sent you over. The only time transferring becomes a problem is if you have a company / school discount code on your account. Don't ask me why it matters, something to do with the agreement I imagine. But, it limits transfer options. The APN that LG defaulted to is still in use and works, you can pull 3G on it.. it just doesn't work as well as phone. Like I said in the OP, I have no idea why they used that one. Every N4 chat I've had though, my customer has reported better speeds immediately after switching to the phone APN.

To your last question, the answer is simple. Because you didn't buy the phone from ATT and sign another 2 year contract, they could give a crap about wasting energy to properly resolve your issue.
I went through something similar when I first got my N4. A supervisor basically told me, "because the phone wasn't built for their network(didn't buy from them), they could not guarantee results regarding data". WHAT?? I simply told them, it has absolutely nothing to do with whether the phone was "built" for your network, it accepts the SAME bands, as YOUR NETWORK, end of story!!

Thanks! I've gotten more information from you than several calls and visits to AT&T. Oddly, I just did a speed test and now I'm getting 5M downloads (matching the One X+ and iPhone 5) so maybe a APN change finally is working for me. I'm using the "phone" settings. I'll be satisfied with these speeds, but it still doesn't resolve a bigger problem that other N4 newbies will experience. I had to create the APN myself... and even knew to check these forums for help... something most customers will never do so they will be stuck with poor data performance on a great phone.

It usually only comes down to 2 things.
1) APN settings. You can verify by going to Settings (she was right, sort of), More (under Wireless & Networks), then Mobile Networks and APNs. You should be using one named AT&T LTE with an APN name of just "phone".
2) Make sure your data plan specifically says 4G LTE for Smartphones. If it doesn't say LTE, you need to get AT&T to change it.

That's a load of ****. Did you call or go to a store? I suggest going to a store. And if you can, make sure its a proper corporate store (and not a random reseller or something).
Mine works fine on T-Mobile LTE. As understand at&t and T-Mobile use the same AWS technology for LTE, just different spectrum.

Had the same issue yesterday when I received the phone. Spent an hour at the att store swapping Sim cards, changing imei numbers and trying different apns. Finally did a factory reset and it worked. We felt stupid. Not sure if thats the case with yours but give it a try.

Also came across another thread with the same issue and another person said they had to change the IMEI on the account to a demo model. We also did the same with mine just before the reset. Here's the quoted text.
Solved. I went to the ATT store copied down the IMEI of a demo LTE phone. Called support, gave them the IMEI and that allowed them to add an LTE plan.

Thanks everybody for the replies.
We tried all sorts of APN settings, but there seems to be a larger issue here causing problems on many or all Google Edition S4 phones on AT&T's network, and that is the IMEI numbers of these Google Edition phones register with AT&T as not supporting LTE and therefore AT&T's data plan doesn't have LTE enabled for those devices. Many owners of Google Edition phones are having this issue, and are solving it by getting the IMEI number in the system to register as a demo with slightly different numbers. Not all people with Google Edition phones are having this issue, because they are just using a SIM card from a previous AT&T phone that was already properly registered with LTE capabilities.
Seems like AT&T just isn't ready for these new Google Edition phones, and the customer service reps are not usually tech. savvy enough to figure this out.
I might add that I myself am on the T-Mobile network (this post was for my friend on AT&T), and I generally get LTE speeds in excess of 30Mb down and 20Mb up here at work where I get 3 out of 4 bars of signal. In the AT&T store nearby, I got 2/4 bars signal and my speed tests still beat the pants off the demo model AT&T had, which got 3/4 bars signal. I say this because I am paying only $100/month for unlimited everything on TWO 4GLTE phones with T-Mobile, while my wife was paying $120/month for the same with AT&T for only ONE phone. The way AT&T garners exclusive deals on phone model variants that we should all be able to purchase and jacks up the prices of service to double that of the competitors, it's time for people to jump ship and force them to become more competitive.

I'm in the same boat. My previous phone (Galaxy Nexus) was not LTE-capable, so after getting a new SIM card for my new i9505g, it's only connecting at HSPA speed. Online chat with AT&T rep wasn't very fruitful. They are saying that the phone is showing up as "unrecognized device" and is causing the issue, and there's nothing they can do about that.
I am about to take a trip to an actual store to see if they have more knowledgeable staff there. Any tips or tricks (or super-secret handshakes) I should know about while talking to them?

Yeah put your sim in an LTE capable att device, have them add the imei and you'll get the LTE plan. You should be good after that. Othwerwise, have them add a dummy imei or one from a display phone. Good luck at the store as this will probably blow their mind.:good:

It went surprisingly well. The rep knew exactly what the problem was (he figured it was a phone shipped from overseas) and went the dummy IMEI route. Within 10 minutes I had LTE.

Hey all! I have been scouring the internet trying to get my LTE to work for the past two days I have used every APN I could find as well as downloaded ther notification toggle app to try to enable LTE.
at one point I did have a LTE data plan but I guess not anymore...
anyways I went on the my att.com account and I somehow got to two different technical support chat windows. The first time I gave him my real IMEI# from my I9505G and he couldn't add the LTE plan because it was not recognized as an ATT phone. I then got a friends ATT phone she is no longer using that has/had LTE on it and after telling me it didn't work, then finally on the third time using 'technical support' she didn't ask for any IMEI number at all just told me it worked.
(I think it was the live chat I found on the support section of my AT&T or something) I am only mentioning this because of the three times I was on live chat I got one texct survey this morning (I was on live chat last night 3x)
I gave all 1's out of 10 (worst possible) but mentioned the chat person was friendly and that I was just unhappy with AT&T.
AT&T then called me this afternoon about the survey and asked if I wanted them to fix the issue..... Was this a real question?
I said yes and now I have LTE working great using the default phone APN that was on the phone from the factory.

So as the Thread Title says, I have switched my Verizon Galaxy S5 over to Straight Talk, however i have 2 issues.
Issue #1 My HSPA+ data speeds are verrrrrry slow at times, currently averaging between 2.5MB/s and 4.1 MB/s Download speeds with between 0.8 and 0.95 upload speeds.
It has gotten as low as 0.12MB/s Down and .02 MB/s Up on HSPA+ I was wondering if this could possibly be an APN issue? Also it tends to switch between HSPA and HSPA+ alot but only seems to switch to HSPA when im not using data.
Issue #2 My phone shows an error This SIM card is from an unknown source. Is there any way to get rid of this without root (which we obviously don't have)??

Verizon phones are CDMA not GSM. Probably why you are limited to ultra slow speed for data, and also probably why you are getting an 'unknown sim' error being that the phone is verizon, and you put in a Straight Talk Sim.

Obviously you're unaware that the Galaxy S5 supports CDMA at LTE speeds AND GSM at HSPA+ speeds. The Verizon Galaxy S5 is a "world" phone and does not require any sort of SIM unlocking in order to be used on other carriers. (as i can show you with a simple screenshot). However i think my decrease in speeds is caused by a bad tower on the opposite side of town from where I actually live. While at home (with only 2 or 3 bars of service) i am able to get fairly decent speeds without issue. As far as the point of this thread goes i was wondering if anybody had any tips or tricks for better stability of the HSPA/HSPA+ network on the Verizon Galaxy S5 and to see if anybody was able to remove the SIM error without rooting. With rooting i know it can be achieved as i have already researched how to do so. I know why the SIM error is there, I'm not that oblivious. But thank you very much for your comment.
Your issue is very simple. You obviously didnt do your research before switching to straight talk. With straight talk you can have any carrier, you just have to have the right sim for that carrier. You probably got the t-mobile sim because thats the one they give if you dont ask. I have the at&t sim and it works perfect on my at&t phone. The only 2 sim cards you can get are at&t and t-mobile. You can use verizon and sprint with straight talk also. All you have to do is go to their website and it will tell you what to do. You have to look for the cdma section for activating a new phone if you want verizon. If you ported your number you can still keep it once you switch carrier options as long as you choose that at checkout. Not sure if you're aware that Straight Talk only supports T-Mobile. They used to support AT&T as well, but they switched to T-Mo. However existing customers that signed up when Straight Talk AT&T was around still get to use AT&T towers for now. There are some loopholes but 99.9% of people get T-Mobile when they sign up for Straight Talk as of today.
Straight Talk never used Verizon or Sprint.

Sounds like your issue is 100% APN.
Here are the APN settings for both Straight Talk and T-Mobile. Try the ST one first and then T-Mobile if that doesn't work. Don't know what to tell you after that, maybe try a new sim card.

I hate when people give out the wrong information. This is not the case and hasn't been the case for awhile. Do your research 1st. Go to straighttalk website and click on byop under shop. Now go to the very bottom where it says see all coverage and it shows the coverage maps of all 4 major providers. Now if you go with that same byop shop page and click on shop at the top, it will bring up a page where you can either buy a t-mobile or at&t sim, and on the right hand side you can also buy a cdma access code. This is not rocket science. Also, apns for every sim card for gsm and cdma access are different. I am not gonna list the apns because reply would be too long but its not hard to find. There are also numerous youtube videos covering this as well as multiple google results. I literally just bought an at&t sim when I upgraded to the gs5 because i had an t-mobile gs3 with the same straight talk service and didn't care for t-mobile. It is true that if you buy a straight talk phone from wal-mart then yes it will probably be a t-mobile phone but to say you can't bring your own phone and use whatever carrier is not an intelligent thing to say when you clearly can.

No need to get in a bunch. I wasn't aware that they started using AT&T and others again. Last year when I was network searching, STalk just stopped signing up new customers with the AT&T plans and their data limit was 2.5gb and not 3 like now. Sorry.

You probably got the t-mobile sim because thats the one they give if you dont ask. I have the at&t sim and it works perfect on my at&t phone. The only 2 sim cards you can get are at&t and t-mobile. You can use verizon and sprint with straight talk also. All you have to do is go to their website and it will tell you what to do. You have to look for the cdma section for activating a new phone if you want verizon. If you ported your number you can still keep it once you switch carrier options as long as you choose that at checkout. I just did all of this a couple of months ago and have done it several times in the past so I know what im talking about.

Nah I'm using the at&t sim. T mobile has garbage coverage out here. I bought the byop package from Wal-Mart that contains both SIM cards.
As for the people saying I should have done my research first, your input is irrelevant to me considering I'm not like every other person in this section of the forums. I know what I'm doing when it comes to this kind of things and of course I did my research ahead of time. So if you're going to come into my thread just to insult my intelligence, you can stop talking because chances are I probably know more about this subject than you do without having to have my face in a web browser.
As for the guy posting about apn, thank you very much for your input. I'll take a look to see if what you had linked is any didn't from what I currently have in my phone. However right now it won't make a difference because I'm being throttled down to .05 mb/s download and .08 mb/s upload.

Helpful tips on switching VW SG5 to Straight Talk
I have been trying all night to switch my boyfriends Verizon SG5 to Straight Talk but I can't get it to accept the SIM card or get it activated. For those that have done this successfully can you please provide me with the steps you took?

I did the same with an s4 and s5, but were slow and had horrible battery life. I couldn't get either phone to activate on the cdma network, so i used a tmobile sim. t mobile has a horrible network her, so I am pretty sure my issue was signal strength.

tmobile is pretty terrible unless you're in a major city. AT&T is the way to go through straight talk. However i would recommend Cricket, much better pricing and less network issues.

straight talk still supports att that is who I use and with an att phone
So my 2 year contract through Verizon finally ended thank God, and I decided to switch to Straight Talk through their BYOP Activation Kit at Walmart. I followed all the steps through the kit and found on the Web just to be safe and got it running on the T-Mobile sim. My only problem is that I cannot get 4G LTE. I get 3G but it will not let me do anything on 3G and when I try to do something involving data or messaging it switches to H+ just long enough to do these things. I have rooted the phone and ensured that Band 4 is activated through the Service Mode on my phone and still nothing. I have even tried multiple APNs. Is it maybe just that there is little to no T-Mobile 4G around here? Running Android 4.4.2 by the way.

And leave everything else empty had a friend said it worked for him.
Just tried this, nothing works at all. Had to switch back to the Straight Talk APN. Oh I guess posting my APN might help.

I am having a similar issue. It's the Verizon Note 3 on Straight Talk AT&T sim. I get H+ but no LTE. I am running stock 4.4.2 not rooted. I really like this phone but if I can't get my 4G LTE working on it I will sell or trade for a AT&T branded note 3 unlocked. I know what part of the problem is. It's the way Verizon sets up their phones. They are LTE capable yes, but Vzw makes sure those capable bands are with their sim cards and frequencies.
I'll have to do some searching on XDA but I think I remember seeing something about rooting the phone, getting into the hidden menu, and changing the bands to the st att sim will get 4G LTE. If someone could chime in here to verify this and point me in that direction it would be great.
On mine with root access I can get into Service mode and apparently by default since one of the latest updates from Verizon their Note 3 has Band 4 enabled. I know if you have AT&T you can select different bands through service mode as well however with my T-Mobile sim changing this simply makes it not work. Could that be what you're referring to?

Yes but it's not working for me. I found out the ONLY way to get the Verizon note 3 to work on Straight Talk AND get LTE is to use the cmda part of the phone, I:E call ST, give them a cdma activation code, and have them switch your service over to the cdma part of the phone.
Well it looks like that's what I'll be doing then because H+ just isn't cutting it. Although it is better than Verizon 3G, considering I hardly got 4G through Verizon anyway.

yeah I hear ya. H+ is ok, but 4G LTE it is NOT!....lol. Keep in mind Straight Talk still doesn't "Guaranty" 4G LTE service. Like most people, I have found that Straight Talk LOVES to quid pro quo themselves out of any responsibility for their service faults. They will blame it on your phone, your area, heck, they will even blame your lack of signal on you when they can saying you did something to your phone to make it not work.
Their customer service is their biggest downfall. But like most companies that have truck loads of money they can afford to not really care.

Straight talk now has Verizon LTE Sim cards. Switch to the Straight Talk Verizon network and purchase their LTE Sim card and you will get a better Verizon coverage and get LTE working.

Well that's good to know. I ended up calling ST after making this thread and when I told them it was a Verizon phone they acted like it was impossible to activate 4G even after I explained it was a world phone. Once I requested to speak to a supervisor they told me they would "work on it and give me a call back". A few days later my phone mysteriously started getting 4G LTE haha.
