Just got a Nexus 4 last week, Love the phone but it does rattle and I take it most people think it's the SIM tray rattling or something in the camera, but it isn't. It's the earpiece grate. If I tap the back where the earpiece is, it rattles loudly and if I hold the earpiece while in a call, it doesn't buzz. The buzz isn't interference, it's the earpiece grate vibrating.
Anyways, that's not what this is about and I rarely make calls so the buzz isn't an issue, I'm rooted, running CM10.1 stable and TWRP for a recovery. I modified the build.prop to allow lockscreen rotation and now I am wondering about rotating the on screen buttons. On my Nexus 7 when I hold the tablet in landscape the buttons rotate to the bottom of the screen, but with the Nexus 4 they stay on the side and just rotate the actual button images, as if you were holding a phone with capacitive buttons.
I'm basically wondering if there is something I can, preferably in build.prop, so that the buttons rotate to the bottom of the screen, because I'm so used to that from my N7 that having them on the side is weird and annoying.
I saw AOKP has that feature, but CM doesn't. You may consider switching to AOKP. If not, try to find a mod or something.

I prefer the stock feel of CM10.1 with minimum customization. I don't like Paranoid, AOKP or PAC so I won't switch, I was hoping someone might direct me to a mod. I did see one for the Galaxy Nexus, but it involved some heavy framework modifications, which I can do, but I'd like one intended for the Nexus 4.
Umm when I ran paranoid android with phablet ui buttons were at bottom but I don't know any way else

Any ideas other than a different ROM?

not to polute your cornflakes but thats a pretty wild assumption you have there. pac, maybe, but all the other roms? its either the same or less. cm isn't minimal, they have the heaviest framework of all because that rom needs to run on legacy devices. a nexus rom comes with a stock aosp image and extends it. same goes for the features, cm has ALOT and much or most of it is not stock and/or does not follow the principles that make stock what it is. im kinda used by these statements and im willing to bet thats your first nexus because in that case you should take what you know about roms and flip it upside down - things are *very* different on this platform, if not opposite.

It's not my first Nexus device and clearly you have no idea what I meant. Have you seen the number of options and features in Paranoid Android? AOKP? PAC?
My point is, is that CyanogenMod is the original custom ROM and all of these other ROMs somehow borrow from CyanogenMod and all of them, except maybe AOKP, have more features than I'd ever use and I don't want them on my device. I also own a Nexus 7 which is rooted, running the latest CyanogenMod build with the latest TWRP and bootloader and it does exactly what I asked for in this thread, so I was wondering if it's possible to do the same on my Nexus 4.
If you compare the degree of customization provided by AOKP, PAC and PA with CM you'll notice that CM lacks plenty of features, which doesn't bother me in the least because I don't use most of them. I'd also like to know what you mean about CyanogenMod being made for legacy devices affecting all builds of CyanogenMod, seeing as how CM builds are cooked from the stock device sources and Cyanogenmod sources, AKA exactly what you just said...
I think moles knows a little something about ROMs

Not new to Android, the forum, etc... Just new to THIS device.
I am looking to get solid opinions on two things...
The best ROM for this tablet. But something stable, working properly, not a lot of bugs. There is a lot of cool development going on for this device, but trying to wade through it all can be a bit of a handful. I don't care about overclocked kernels and things like that. I just want something fast, stable, full featured, etc... Taking the stock ROM, and making it even better.
In the past, Cyanogen was the go to ROM for my DroidX. Blew me away. On the Rezound, my current fav is ViperREZ. Maybe that gives an indication of what I am looking for?
Second question, the launcher. My main goals are speed, eye candy and features. I have used Go, Apex and Nova on my phones, and Sense 4,0 is actually pretty slick. ADW was nice as well.
But are any of those really optimized for a tablet? I am looking for something that is very functional, but that also makes me say WOW! every time I use it.
Suggestions?
Sigh. So many threads asking about the "best" ROM.... why don't you just try them all and see which one you prefer. All have faults some more than others. You'll get different answers from everyone because everyone has different preferences on what's good.
It takes all of 1 minute to flash a ROM... you could quickly sift through the available ROM's to see which one catches your eye at first.
im using paranoid android. its based off of cm10 plus you can change switch between tablet mode, phone mode, and phablet mode on any app you have installed. until there is a full version of cm10 or aokp this looks like it will be my rom of choice. i agree with the post above, just flash some and see what you like i just chose to answer your question an not be a d about it. good luck and happy flashing
Well, playing with all of them, if there are known issues, which most of them have, can be like finding a needle in a hay stack, you know?
I will say though, that this launcher is impressive. I used it on my phone awhile back, but it had some glitches back then. It has been updated since then and on a tablet it makes a lot more sense.

For now, hell, the ROM may not matter much as the UI is completely revamped and very cool.
I did say that it might be a dumb question. LOL
I wish CM10 was fully baked for this device, that would rock.

Cool, I will check that one out.
Anyone know how to take a screen cap with this device, on the stock ROM?
Is this app even working on tablets? Btw its cool but u will loose a lot of stock android features, at least i miss them there.
You could wait for charmeleon app, thats kind of a launcher app. You could google it. It will be released in september i think. It was a kickstarter project and i am a backer so i will get it this week already, i can report later if u want.

Actually working pretty well. The 3D effects really come alive on a larger screen. If I could take screen caps, I would, but have not figured that out yet on this thing. hehe
Power+Volume Down should take a screenshot.
I've flashed 3 or 4 roms, and always restore my stock backup.. I haven't found any that are as smooth as the stock build as of yet.

I agree with this post, the only way to find out what's best for you is to try them all. I did that I came to conclusion that the Jellybro nightly kang is what's best for me with 170 DPI mod to bring out tablet UI. Loving it now. I tried the other "hybrid" ROM but didn't like it because I naturally love the big (or small) resolution which give me a more virtual screen estate at all times.
Good luck

Hmmm... what is this 170dpi mod you speak of?
Vol down and power does not screen cap like it does on my phone. Weird.
And last thing... How does one get into Recovery? I can do it from the OS with Quickboot, and selecting Bootloader or Recovery, etc... I just backed up the phone to a Nandroid using CWM, the one that is touch screen.
on my Rezound, I can pull the battery, hold vol down and power for a few seconds and get into Recovery in the event that a Flash is wonky and bootlooping or whatever...
How does one do that on this device?
If your not 'new' to this forum then surely you would know "best ROM?" threads aren't really tolerated..

1) I am not new.
2) And had I just asked for the "best ROM", I would expect your non-helpful reply. I felt that if I explained the criteria of what I was after, then perhaps some other people that went through the selection process could point me in the right direction rather than trusting to trial and error.
See, I apply the same standards to others that I apply to myself. In the 17 or so years that I have been on forums(going back to Tom's Hardware Guide on the original Delphi forums), and even having moderated several over the years... I have never once told someone to use the search button, or "just figure it out", etc...
I always answer questions, perhaps in more detail and length than most would, and so I guess that I sorta expect the same courtesy of others.
If someone says that they are looking for X,Y,Z, I don't tell them to go try dozens of ROMs and hope that sooner or later they stumble across the one that has X,Y and Z. I try to say, "Hey, ROM's are all subjective, but here are 2 or 3 that are exactly what you are asking for"... or something to that effect.
Regards,
Dave

I find that cwm won't open up for me if I power off then volume down then select recovery and all that. It just hangs on the black screen. So I just use adb or ROM manager. Or then advanced power menu.

I have a question, I just got m nexus 4 and unlocked the bootloader, rooted and have cwm recovery. I came from a samsung galaxy s2 and ran cm10 on that phone and can understand why to run aosp on a samsung touchwiz based rom, BUT why go cm10 on a stock google rom? Besides adding a reboot menu, what does cm10 add extra? How much stability can it actually add to the phone?? Any input?
Also just wondering if franco kernel will work with stock rom?
I've always been a fan of going straight to CM10 or other custom ROMs with my previous phones to improve performance. With the N4 I feel that the stock performance is more than adequate and worth hanging onto. However, in my case, I really like the quick toggle mod that someone made which allows the quick settings tabs to become quick toggles instead of directing you to the settings menu. For this reason I decided to go with the MoDaCo custom ROM Because it is essentially the stock ROM + advanced power menu + quick toggle mod. It's perfect for me.
This go-around I'm going to give CM10.1 a couple months to turn into a 100% solid/bug free ROM before I consider switching to it. Right now people are reporting random weird issues with it such as invalid timestamps on text messages & issues with Wifi.

Adds much more than a reboot menu. Many of the CM10 features still haven't been merged yet either.
My main reasons: I prefer the CM toggles to any app substitute, Profiles, Quiet Hours, the notification light implementation, I'm a bit of a Theme Chooser whore.
There are substitutes for all of those things, but I prefer to have it as part of the system.
There are still quite a few things that are missing however, but they're working hard on making them ready for 4.2.1
^^ Quiet hours, good call. I forgot about that. It is a feature I definitely miss but can do without for now.
Well OP, you kinda answered your own question. It's the features of CM that makes people want to use it. It adds more functionality. Like what someone said in the thread, it's still being merged so it's a work in progress.

Honestly, sometimes I question when the Android team will just start rolling in certain CM features by default.
CyanogenMod has features built in that is not offered on stock. On stock, you would probably have to download several apps just to get the same functionality that CM has.

Agreed. Really liking the nexus 4s screen. It's going to take some time getting used to the blacks, the blacks on gn definitely looked better as my beautiful widgets widget looks weird now. But for brighter colors and for viewing videos, the color reproduction for the ips is pretty astonishing.
Hopefully PGM makes it way to N4, that kernel module was so fun to use on my GN.

So, after months of lusting over the Nexus 4, I've finally got one coming on July 23rd.
So, before I get it, I thought I'd just find out what y'all think I should do? Obviously I'll root and all that, but I'm wanting extra features. For example, I'm hoping we either get it, or quickly port the version of Google Now demonstrated in the new Moto X Leaked video. So I'm thinking maybe you guys can show me a few extra features just to make your phone a little nicer to use. I'm thinking notifications, voice control. I just want things to make my whole experience with the nexus 4 smooth, fast and fluent!
Thanks in advance
Can't go wrong with CyanogenMod 10.1.2... It's not a drastic change from stock rom but it's much more customizable.

I honestly think you should go on a download frenzy and get the latest version of every popular custom rom. Paranoid suits my needs the best, but it's not for everyone. I like it because of the hybrid look, the halo notification icon (even though lots of roms have it now, it's paranoid's feature and I like that ) and I love that paranoid are right up there with CM right now, actually inventing new features that no one has even thought up before. They update the rom regularly, almost weekly, and you get the cool new features before anyone else does.
As far as kernels, I'd recommend the same...download them all. For me, franco is my flavor. He's built in every single mod that has been released for our device so far. It's got the best audio amplification, and my phone is really just an sms device/mp3 player so a good volume boost is right at the top of my list. The franco kernel app lets you tune the kernel in every way you could want without having to bounce from one app to the next. It's also got decent battery life....not the best (matr1x has consistently done that for me, across devices) but with all the extra features and tunables in the franco app it's something I'm willing to trade off.
It's really up to you what you decide to do with it....there are so many differences in the roms available that it's hard to tell what will suit someone sometimes.
Oh...one thing I would definitely recommend for EVERY single N4 user.....buy a hard-back, or similarly protective case.....there is a good chance you may break the back glass on your new toy at some point. It's nice to already have a case to cover it up if it does happen, rather than walk around with it like that for a while before you get one. Also, it'll protect it some if you do happen to drop it. My poor nexus just barely tapped a trailer hitch on a penske box truck about half an inch to the left of the usb port on the bottom, and it's got a nice spider web crack going halfway up the back of the phone now.....and it was wearing an official bumper, purchased directly from google Some are very fragile, so you should be prepared going in!!

I can't be the only one not enjoying lollipop. I feel like it's been dumbed down, had features scrubbed, just horrible experience.
Google and AOSP thrived on customization and user experience. I feel that 5.0 and 5.1 are a step away from that. I'm not even an "early adaptor" this far into the release, yet I feel like a beta tester. Random reboots, Webview crashing tons of apps, I can't use Firefox or Chrome for 10 minutes without a crash, Xposed being dysfunctional. The "interruptions" function is unintuitive. Aesthetically I feel JB and Kk were superior in almost all regards.
I support developers when I can, I want to do nothing but further the Android cause. I can't code so I "buy a beer" for the guys that can occasionally. But each day I'm less and less optimistic about androids future.
Idroid, here we come.
Am I crazy or does anyone else want their 4.4 back as much as I do?
I haven't had any of those problems on 5.0 or 5.1. Are you using a custom ROM or just stock?

The hell you talking about? Lollipop has been rock solid for me. What features were removed? And if you're using Xposed, that's probably your problem-- it's an ALPHA.
These are from a mix of stock and Euphoria. It seemed like the amount of work by devs that went into 4.0+ OS was incredible. Now it's echo chamber reassurances of its better, it's better, so smooth, look at material design. *sip green koolaid*
It feels as if the blind notion of "if it's apple it's great" is engulfing android. I want more devs, more AOSP projects, originality.
I am soapboxing a little here but I digress.
I am dissatisfied with the visual and functional direction android is going and want to head back to Kitkat.

One example. My vibration strength for hepatic feedback and phone ring are linked. I'd like my phone to vibrate on 100% but my key presses to be about 40%. Quick toggle shortcuts are mangled. Lockscreen notification is not on a per app basis.
Forced encryption is an unnecessary tool for most users. If your phone gets turned off after being lost a person who finds it has no owner information. Would device manager even be able to remote lock and erase?
The reason I threw in Xposed dysfunction is because it worked on 4.4. It was a reason I wanted to retreat back to my Kitkat.

For the encryption, your owner info appears on the password/pattern page when the device is turned on. I can't comment on the vibration cause I can't even feel it at 100%.

A lot of your complaints in this post also are not addressed in stock KitKat. Sounds more like you miss a particular custom experience.
I've heard of these webview crashes but not once had one. Which seems weird because as a software developer I abuse my phone regularly.
The encryption is more useful with malicious software or network attacks.

Or you could customize it yourself. Thats how most rom modders get started. What it comes down to is not that you miss Kitkat, but that you want years of development in a shorter time.
I would also like to try a kitkat rom as i still have multiple apps and games that are not compatable with Lolipop.

Probably not. The early debug build found would have worked, if the binaries were correct. As you could see in the video and pic, the binaries were not correct. Without that as a starting point, it gets really hard to port it. Its one thing to use Kitkat binaries in Lollipop, but another to use Lollipop binaries in Kitkat.
I honestly think in every aspect, Lollipop is so much better than previous versions of Android. For once, most things follow a specific design, and even apps are following it. That is the one thing I hated about owning an Android phone, one app looks this way and another looks that way, menu coming from the left, some have a menu coming from the right, it was just all over the place. I love how sleek Lollipop looks and honestly, the stuff CM12.1 has right now is great. Maybe I'm not into customizing the crap of the phones like I used to be, maybe that's why I'm satisfied. I remember when I owned a Vibrant I'd even change the bootsounds, boot animation, font, and all this other stuff. Now, I'm content with having some customizations but having a stable ROM with great battery life is priority for me.

Those issues are definitely not normal, and I'm betting you have hardware issues as the root cause. Bad RAM, the "hard drive", or something is causing it. 5.1 has been perfect for me with none of those issues.
Hardware issues can be just as common as software. I don't know why people always blame software without even considering it to be hardware. The manufacturing process is not perfect either.
Stock is stable and user experience is what Nexus are meant to be.
I'm enjoying it. I've found cyanogenmod based roms seem to have the most customization. Benzo is really stable. I haven't owned anything besides the Turbo and the N6 since the original droid incredible days so maybe I missed the glory days of kitkat.
I recently got a Nexus 6p. I was very happy with CyanogenMod 11 on my Nexus 5, and the various features that it offered, aside from the occasional bug here or there. Can anyone please tell me which custom ROM for a Nexus 6p (currently running the latest stock ROM 6.0.1) would be most like the CM 11 ROM on the Nexus 5, but for the Nexus 6p, with the added features of the most current stock marshmallow ROM build? I was considering Resurrection Remix. But from the installation instructions I found, it seems like I need to be on lollipop in order to install it?
Thank you for any information or advice anyone can offer!
If you have had a Nexus 5 and you stayed under kitkat (CM11) until now then I recommend you to keep the stock software.
I would just go straight to N Preview 3. Works like a charm for me.

Um... thanks? Not sure why you would suggest that (if it's even a serious suggestion and you're not just trying to be a smart-ass).
Stock marshmallow clearly has far fewer customizations and offers way less in the way of quick management features. I stuck with CM11 because it did everything I needed, and for the most part, I didn't have to do any upgrading after that because any issues I encountered were tolerable. One of my favorite features of CM11 was the customization of the quick launch notification bar. The marshmallow notification pull down shortcuts are heavily lacking.
Also, the auto brightness on stock marshmallow is terrible. I regularly need to adjust the brightness level manually in order for the automatic brightness to make the screen either dim enough, in dark areas, or bright enough, when outside in daylight.
I also really dislike all of the black text on white background menus for everything. Would much rather have a dark theme. And not having the ability to customize quite a few other features is very frustrating after being accustomed to the numerous customizations that CM11 offered.
If anyone else has any legitimate and helpful advice or information on a good custom ROM that offers these features, customizations, or improvements, please let me know.

I wasn't trying to play a role. I thought you didn't know how to upgrade and that's why you stayed with an outdated software for so long. IMHO running CM11 is not the wisest idea if you value security - when was the last update BTW?
If you're happy with CM then go with CM13.
This is clearly a cleverly disguised comparison thread. Which are against the rules.

No, I knew how to upgrade. I just had enough working properly with my phone that I stopped upgrading the OS and pretty much any app unless I saw some great value or feature to be added with an upgrade. Security updates typically don't concern me as I don't do much with my phone that security is much of an issue. I'm far more concerned with stability. And in my years of working as a sound designer and audio/music engineer, I've learned that upgrades can often be far more of a headache than they are worth. Many audio engineers still use software from a decade ago just because it works for everything they need it to do and doesn't cause any problems. Just one small example: after recently getting a Motorola 360 SmartWatch, I was forced to upgrade several Google apps on my N5, which resulted in a number of undesired behaviors and changes, new bugs, and features that actually worked a lot worse than before, such as Google's voice to text feature. I used to have no problem with it properly recognizing my speech and translating my dictation to text. But ever since that was upgraded, it has been riddled with problems, like often inserting the wrong word (something that sounds almost nothing like what I said), inserting the word "comma" or "Kama" instead of an actual ",", randomly capitalizing words in the middle of sentences, and persistently failing to do a number of other things properly. And I know that this wasn't the result of running an older OS because I still experience the same frustrating behavior with the voice to text feature on my Nexus 6p right OOTB with the latest stock marshmallow build.
Another annoying "upgrade" is the change to how editing text works. It used to be a long press on text would show all the options to select all, copy, cut, or paste across the top of the screen. But now instead get a pop-up menu that requires an additional click to show the option to select all, and then after doing so the menu changes (in this forum at least) to show select all, assist, translate, and what looks like a backspace (that I can only assume will delete everything I have selected). Yet another chapter in the book of "how to fail in releasing updates".

I'm not trying to make any comparisons between ROMs. Just trying to figure out which one has the features that I want for my Nexus 6p, and would be the best to install based on my current stock OS, since as far as I could from reading the installation instructions, Resurrection Remix would require me to be running a different OS in order to do the installation.
I've been running cm13 since I got my 6p. No problems at all. If you want to avoid any instabilities then stick to the CM13 snapshot builds.
I don't know if you've tries CM13 but it has many awesome features. A lot of improvements to the notification toggles as well.

Okay cool. That's sort of what I was hoping to hear. I generally tend to stick with what I know and what works once I find something. Was just concerned about the newer version being stable. Was hoping I get some honest feedback about it without fishing for it directly.
