The N7 is 720p. I assume that is the issue. Try a 720p video.

Anyone know why this happens? Gets choppy with 1080P videos for some reason, been using MXplayer as a video player.

How can I get the sound to work in the MKV files with my. Nexus 7

software decoder
Just use something like MX Player and select software codec for audio, it should start working.
Also BS Player plays it all without a problem automatically (tried AAC and DTS soundtracks)
BS Player worked best for me with mkv's, smoother playback & less battery usage.

1080P mkv plays fluent?
Absolutely, I even stream 1080p videos/movies to it thru bs player pro or dice player.

I've tried multiple files on my nexus of various avi's and mkv's and none of em have sound. I do have sound from YouTube though. Any ideas?

Using which player app? Try BSPlayer, and try all the possible combinations of hardware and software decoding.
