Hey all,
Does anyone know of any means to turn off the keyboard backlight, force it off no matter what the situation? As well, does anyone know of any hack or program one could use to force toggle the keyboard on and off?
Aside from this, does anyone have any pictures of the keyboard open? I specifically want to see how the leds are arranged in there. I want to remove the blue leds and replace them with a few white or red ones.. or, put a resistor in, so that the blue leds are EXTREMELY DIM compared to their brightness now.
It's annoying to me that the keyboard leds are so bright, that they actually outshine my main screen (which has the brightness turned down).
Any ideas, anyone?
Hi Brad,
Most of the pics available had no shot of the keyboard PCB removed... I am also looking for it. I wanted to shim the right side of the keyboard since that part is lower than the left side.
Is your keyboard keys also going a little sunk from left to right ? you need to feel/look for it hard, since it is just a matter of half millimeter.
No.. no issues with my keyboard, other than I can't even stand to look at it. I literally just can't look at it. I have to close my eyes when I type. I think I have some extreme blue-light sensitivity or something.
My Hermes is fairly new, though... but again, the keys all seem fine. I can't *see* the keys, but they feel fine.
I just refuse to stare at extremely bright and annoying painful to look at things. I mean, didn't these guys notice that the Hermes seemed to be all blurry, when the backlight was on? And really bright??
Kinda says it all in the Title.
Ive recently changed my theme to be very minimal,
including removing the start & close softkeys on screen (WM6.5.5)
Now, I use the hardware keys instead.
The problem is that because I use the hardware keys a lot,
they light up a lot & I have actually seen a slight drop in battery life.
The other problem is when I want to use my phone at 3am after being woken
by a text from a friend & all of a sudden Im blinded by the backlights behind
the four buttons.
Does anyone know if there is a way to permenantly disable them without taking
the device apart & ripping them out?

I've been searching endlessly for this also. any luck?
Sure is guys... not sure if its the bsb Tweeks... you can disable and control led lighting as well as in call settings and sms backlighting and screen.
Hi,
I bought my wife a Wildfire but the softkey backlights are a bit of a pain - under both 2.1 and 2.2.
They appear to be ambient light sensitive - so they come on when it's dark and go off when it's brighter. However, it has to be really dark/dull for them to come on - and I think the sensitivity is set too low.
I can't find any way of adjusting the sensitivity - and it is not effected by the brightness controls. No way to keep them on permanently either - like my Desire HD.
I'm just wondering if the sensor is faulty or if it's just normal behaviour and we need to get used to it? it needs to be twilight with the lights off for them to come on - or really dull internal lighting. They never come on outside unless it's just about night-time.
Let me know your experiences?
Cheers - and a happy new year.
Well if it helps if anything Myne is over sensitive

Im sure it is automatic and does not use the ambient light. There is no setting for this that i know of. Im sure if u just look the phone and unlock it the backlights come back on.
I believe it works with the brightness of the screen, so if you set it to automatic brightness then it'd be automatic. otherwise it'll just follow the brightness set.
I read on another forum that the sensor is behind one of the speaker grills.
That does seem to be the case; on my Wildfire, if you cover the righthand side grill, the lights come on.
The sensor seemed to be on the black screen frame - near where the notification light was. I could get the lights to illuminate by covering it up too - but as soon as pulling my finger away, they would go out.
Anyways, my big-fingered wife couldn't get to grips with the virtual keyboards on the small Wildfire - and I tried as many as I could - Swype, Better, various T9s etc. So we still had enough time to exchange the phone to a physically keyboarded Android phone - she got a SE X10 mini pro.
Thanks for all your help though...
I think its in the black strip by the htc logo

Hey guys,
I've searched but I can't find an answer. I'm using an Incredible S ROM on my HD2 at the moment that leaves the hardware keys constantly on when the screen is on - I don't like this, and don't ever need the backlight for the keys as I know where they are now. Is there any way I can disable this totally?
Thanks,
Zuka

Hey,
if your build is using the same init script as rafdroid you can try this:
create a file called "config.txt" on the root of your sdcard copy/type this line: auto_btn_backlight=0 - then reboot.
this is also worked with dandiest builds, so Might work for you.
Hi, thanks for your reply
I'm not running one of Raf's or Dandiest's ROMs, mine doesn't have an init script so this won't work. Is there any other way? Seeing as those ROMs have different button backlight drivers I'm assuming there has to be a way to control their on/off states
I'm not trying to be annoying by bumping, but this keeps falling off the radar and I'm sure there's a way to do this, if anyone could point me in the right direction that'd be awesome

Sound like an unstable ROM. My only advice is to try a different one. If you like pure android you can try tytung's ROM. It's the best, just follow my sig.
...what?
Why does my ROM sound unstable? The button backlights aren't actually causing a problem, I just don't need them. Ever. I'm looking for a way to disable them, but I like (love) my ROM after months of searching

Hey
guessed u didnt have a rom from raf or dandi, they havent released an Incredible S build yet.
mind telling us which Incredible S you have or is it a secret
& you are right, it has nothing to do with stability, its the newer light drivers, this was implemented to fix the led notifications, not sure if you can change this (always on) behavior without going back to the old drivers.
p.s. how do you know your build doesnt have an init script, have you tried the config.txt?
Hey mate,
I'm using Korand's stripped down Incredible S build - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1019489
The reason I'm assuming it doesn't have an init script is because, apart from the battery percentage icon, I think everything else is stock, judging from Korand's first psot. It's hard to tell because there's not much support for the ROM
I wouldn't mind going back to the old light drivers though, or just rendering both the notification LEDs and button backlights inoperable. Don't use either really
bumpity bumpity yeah

Theres an app in android market for that...its called "ADJ Brightness" which basically allows yoy to adjust and lock the screen brightness. It can be set to extremely low (much lower than android lowest setting...or extremely high, again higher than android default max
But if you hit menu then chose "options" there near the bottom you will see the option to Lock the button lights OFF...works a treat and saves me a lot of battery jiuce. Also in this options menu you can chose to have the little charging led either On or Off...I find this used in conjunction with "button saviour" and another app that allows me to wake the phone with the volume rocker means i dont need to use the H/W keys at all
Dont know if this is what your after but hopefully it may help.
Thanks Con, I installed the app
It does let me control the hardware buttons, allows me to turn them off, but whenever I press them they just come back on again, despite checking "always off" in the settings
But at least this shows that they can be controlled, even on an HD2
any other ideas?
Ah, sorry zuka, i have only just noticed this as well...yes it seems the backlight does reactivate when i again use the buttons. However i am using Rafdroid 4.2 rom which allows the backlight to off after 10 seconds. So i guess your issue does lie within your rom
I no longer use the hardware buttons (or very rarely) instead i opt to use the onscreen replacments within button savior, Which is why i didnt notice that the backlight does re-activate when the buttons are used...this seems to overide the adj.bright app. But like i say my light is only on for 10 secs or not at all using adj & BS.
Sorry dude am at a loss as to how you could fix this as it does sound frustrating
Nah, thanks for your reply anyway. It's not like this is a horrible bug, it's just annoying because I don't want the hardware buttons at all, I know that they can be controlled but I just can't figure out how to keep the damn things off...
if anybody has any other ideas, I'd welcome them. at this point I'm stumped
Has anybody been thinking about this for a while and has a solution?
Hey
ADJ Brightness should do the work for you
just play with the setting( Menu-option)
lock screen brightness, so it stays off.
good luck
tried this app a while a go and it solved this problem.
Hello all!
My Razer Phone 2 stopped charging. This is how my Razer Phone 1 also died, basically the charging port went bad, then worse, then died completely.
Anyway I got the Nothing instead, since price and specs fit me pretty fine.
However I want to change a few things. I might be blind in the settings menu, but I'm hoping you'll still help me!
I got a few points I'd like changed, and no amount of googling helped me here:
1. The phone turns on the screen when I pick it up. But there are often mistakes, and the screen just turns on by itself when I'm walking with it in my hand, or in my pocket. It has happened already a few times, after having for phone for 48 hours, that I have dismissed some notifications because of this. Can I stop this function all together?
2. I can also press the screen once and the screen will turn on. This is also a problem when the phone is in my pocket. On my Razer I had to double tap and it still turned on sometimes in my pocket. I ran the Razer phone with Nova Launcher, maybe I have to change to this launcher from the Nothing one to get this double tap feature?
3. I can turn off the screen by double tapping on the home screen. That is a feature I always use and appreciate. I never put the phone screen down so the lights on the backside won't get used. I always double tap to turn on the screen, check for notifications, and double tap to turn the screen off should there be no notifications. Nothing phone won't turn off the screen with a double tap unless I actually unlock it, so I can't do a quick check for notifications by double tapping and double tapping again. It won't matter if the phone is on a table, but I frequently check notifications and put the phone back to my pocket, and having to go for the screen button is not exactly for me. Do I need Nova Launcher here?
4. I NEVER use sounds on my phone, except for the alarms. When someone calls me while the screen is turned off, the screen turns off and I get vibration. If the screen is on I won't get any vibration from it, only a visual notification which is easy to overlook if I let it sit with the screen on but locked if I just checked notifications. Also I like the feedback in my hands in case I am doing something on the phone. I already missed some calls because of this. Can it be changed?
5. Is it possible to manipulate the glyph on the backside? I found a "secret" setting which makes them light up to the music playing, but that became pretty annoying just after 5 seconds. Are there some basic things you can do with the light? Like making a custom event and then specify how the light should react? Could be something simple like when a call is active the lights come on very dim? Maybe a 3rd party app someone did?
6. The Razer Phone 2 (and 1) has HUGE speakers in the top and bottom, so I have been living with pretty big bezels. The Nothing has the same size but the phone is almost 100% screen. If I need to go to the bottom and press a back button or something, I cannot reach anymore like on the Razer. Is there a way to add some virtual bezels on Android?
7. I really hate this "notch" or "camera bump". It is a bit of the same as number 6, but can I remove it completely, so the top of the screen where the camera is won't be used at all? The whole line, effectively adding more bezel here too.
I am probably picky, but I have used my phone in a specific way for my whole life, and I am not really good with changes. Also I think a phone should adapt to my needs, and I shouldn't adapt to it.
Thanks for reading and hopefully helping
To be honest, sounds like the Nothing Phone isn't the right device for you.
I like to know the answer to question 1 too.

1. There is an option to turn this feature off under Display->Lock Screen called Lift to show lock screen.
2. Don't know, but you should try using the Nova Launcher.
3. Don't know, but you should try using the Nova Launcher.
4. Very niche use case, you can try to search some root methods.
5. There is root app which can control the light you can try that.
6. and 7. There should be some root apps or magisk modules which allows to do that.
To 2: (I dont know if this works on NothingOS since im on Paranoid Android. But both are very near to stock, maybe it works for you or for others.) I disabled that tap to activate setting and am using fingerprint while screen is off. This can also act as a quick look for notifications, for that i tap where the fingerprint reader is really short so it fails to unlock. This way only the always on display shows up for 3-4 seconds.
Nova wont change anything lockscreen related.
To 5: If you have root, time and like playing around with commands and apps, you can try tasker. Since im on Paranoid Android and the glyphs arent really implemented yet, i made a task that fits my needs perfect.
To your other problems: i think too, the phone should adapt to the user. So i suggest you to wait, i guess there will come roms that are way more customizable.
And maybe a pixel would fit your needings better than this phone because there is a big custom rom scene around.
