Ok people, i'm trying to explain.
Last friday i was on track doing my weekly jogging session, with my n4 in the armband.
Actually on: data, bluetooth (connected with the polar hearthrate trasmitter), gps, runtastic pro, and this time for the first time Google Play Music streaming my collection.
After about 3,5Km, I tried to switch on the display to read an sms, but nothing, it didn't switch on.I haven't payed attention 'cause sometimes it tooks a while to go on, and everything was working fine (i mean music, runtastic and so on).
at the end of the session, the same, everything was fine, except the display, BLACK.
And that's my problem now.
My phone works, even the touch works (i can use it,feeling the onscreen vibrations), but no display,no way.
I did 5 forced reboots, but nothing.
I would like to ask you if could be something other than the display or I've to change it.
No rma, even if it has US warranty, actually i'm in Italy.
Thanks for your answers.

if the display is off while booting, its not sod, and probably a hardware issue. did you drop it? could it have gotten wet from excessive sweat or something?

I was thinking sweat as well. If nothing comes up even in bootloader I think it must be a hardware issue of some sort.

I am more concern about the touch screen problem. Not the Multitouch one, but the one about the touch screen goes crazzzy (seriously a phone that is operate completely by touch screen and the touch screen is not reliable??? what the heck is Google/HTC thinking?). That is the main thing that is keeping me from this phone.

I'd be curious to see the actual number of people suffering from this problem since so few people are complaining about it. Mine doesn't have this issue.
My screen goes crazy.
Every day or so ill turn the phone on where the top half of the screen wil be fine, but the bottom half will be out of calibration by about an inch. I'll feel the vibrate from the Buttons at the bottom when im clearly about an inch about them. Reboot fixes

i must be one of the few people who are lucky as well. I don't have the screen calibration error. Every blue moon the wrong spot will light up but i just have to press it again, no need to exit out of app or reset. I've only had my n1 for a 1 1/2 months, i was not one of the early adopters, if that means anything.
Also, no screen calibration issues. Hope the new OTA opens up the rest of the N1 Ram!

Get your palms off the side of the screen and it'll work fine.

The only screen issue I have is when I am using the phone via BlueTooth and need to Mute the phone.. when I hit the Mute button, it presses the 0 button instead. I just have to hit power to turn off the screen for a few seconds and turn it on and it works as expected again.

I have 1 more month until I pull a trigger on this phone, hoping to see improvement.

I have issues with touchscreen stuff all the time. When I type fast I'll get all kinds of errors... I also have the issue when sometimes no matter where I click on the screen it only hits the home button... I really hope this gets cleared up.
Well I must have very bad luck because this is my second N1 with the problem.Return the first one 00 because the screen craziness and receive a new one 01 (different badge) and also has the problem. But I'm keeping this one, anyway is rooted already and notices is better way better, but the problem still here, but just ,put it to sleep and wake-up and fix it.I don't know the cause of this if software or hardware but definitely not everybody has it.I downloaded a drawing app from the market and I can see that when the problem I touch someplace near the middle of the screen and it recognized the touch as a straight line all the way to the bottom.

Touch Screen calibration. The lower 3/4 part of the screen starts acting crazy and registers touch below what you are touching. Needs a soft-reset; solves the issue temporarily.
Used to experience them semi-regularly. Seldom after switching to custom ROMs; both Cyanogen's and Modaco's Desire seem to have lessened the problem somewhat, though I can't imagine why as I don't think either developer poked around with the drivers or anything. And since I've been on custom ROMs for quite a while now, I'm certain it's not a placebo effect. I simply very rarely experience the problem anymore.
I too rarely experience this anymore after switching to Desire.
Also, soft-reset is not necessary. Turn the screen off for 3 seconds.
Damn it. It happen to me today again. I was browsing my email with one finger on the screen in the middle flipping through. Then all of sudden the phone kept vibrating as if I was touching the icons below. Then the search box pop up, a voice search came up and a task screen as if pressed those buttons!! I should have recorded it. Anyway I put the phone to sleep and wake it again and all is well for now. Anyone think this is a hardware problem???
never have had this happen, only thing i have noticed is when another part of my hand is touching the edge of the screen..
I talked with Google customer service today. She acknowledged that it is fairly common issue and insisted that it is not a hardware issue and even her phone has the same behavior. Whatever it is, they will cover it under warranty. So, i will wait for a month and if problem is unsolved, I will ask for replacement.

The ONLY calibration issue I have seen is when I am on my BT Hands free in the truck and go to hit the Mute button, it registers and presses the 0 (zero) key instead.
Hitting power (to turn off the screen) and turning it back on again (after a 2-3 second pause) fixes it...
Annoying, but not unusable...

I don't see why being $500+ should matter. FYI, the price range this handset falls into is the typical, NORMAL price being not subsidized to a network.

Kool then. Lets just hope this is a software issue. Because of Google silence on the matter, I cannot decide whether or not to return or swap the phone. Mainly because I don't know for a fact if its software and my 14days ends this Thursday
Maybe its a app installed causing the issue...
maybe its a design issue, arn't the antennas down in that part of the phone? If it happens with the desire ROMs too?
If it was easy to fix surely it would be fixed by now as its quite widely reported

What makes you a genius, maybe we all have a app that causes our **** to go buggy when Its open or something... could easily be the dealio.... I don't have the problem so I don't care, but I know apps can make things very buggy....
I doubt it is a app, but it could be, and others that flashed roms that don't have the problem anymore well, maybe the new rom and app aren't conflicting, just a guess....
I got my AMOLED N1 back in Feb 2010.
Unlocked bootloader, rooted 2.2.1.
The problem which existed from day one but showing much more often these days, is that after running an app (e.g. Market) the touch screen misbehave. It either does not register the touch, or maps the touch about an inch lower from where it should be. The phone has plenty of free memory (internal).
The problem is more prominent since the 2.2.1 update (but I am not sure it's related).
Does anybody else experiencing this?
TIA
Most people!
There is no solution other than the temporary fix of turning the screen off and then on again.

Yes.
I'm getting really frustrated with the N1 due to the ****ty touch screen.
I had a play with my brother's Nexus S.... SO much nicer and smoother. The touchscreen on the N1 is abysmal and shocking!
I've also noticed "freezes" in the sense that the display won't come up - only the touch screen buttons light up and then slowly fade off.... only way to recover is to pull out the battery. Really annoying.

Thanks DirkGently1, itay1,
Is there anything that can be done to fix this? e.g. replace a part (whether under warranty or not)?
It is actually becoming hard to even use the N1 as a phone or for text..

My first experience using Android was turning on my Nexus One and encountering this issue the very first time i had to use the screen! The device i have has had this problem in varying degrees since i got it. Very bad to start with, not so frequent after i sent it back for repair.
Take a look at the poll from my own thread about the issue...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=878477
Pretty commonplace problem, which along with the power buttons failing detracts from an otherwise great phone.
Blame HTC, I had this issue on my first N1 earlier last year. I would turn the screen off then turn it back on.

I find it behaves better when the screen is clean. Perhaps finger grease can confuse it... it might be *that* sensitive.
I flashed the frg83d update this morning and I've gone all day without the crazy screen thing and I'm loving it lol!
*knock on wood *
Hope it stays that way!

I was just about to write the same thing. It is much better after I've cleaned it (which I didn't for a while)
I am not using any screen cover. I never did. But maybe there is a cover that helps. Those of you who never suffered from this issue, do you use a screen cover/protector? which one?
Also, maybe the issue is intensified by how dry (or not) our fingers are compared to others..
@dusty-:
Do you mean frg83g? frg83d did not help my case. sorry..
Yes I meant frg83g lol
Got yesterday my Acer A500 and its really great.
But a few minutes ago I got a strange problem ( not rooted or flashed yet, just the normal 3.0.1 stock rom )
battery was down to 10% and then the screen started blinking ( turned off and on again and again). while this I also couldn´t use the screen everywhere.only several areas worked.
do you think that I should send it back for warranty or just wait?
help would be appreciated!thanks in advance!
didn´t remove this acer sticker and just recognized that the screen has problems that touch input doesn´t work, so removed it and it works again.tested again with the sticker -> screen blocked -> removed -> works again...lol maybe the solution.because this was like touching the screen, although the first day the sticker didn´t effect the display usage
I would say yes. To sending it back if you got it online.I drooped my very slightly same kinda thing I took it apart and was the. Monitor connector loose.my GPS radio antana was lose as well. Go figure. I put drop of silicone on the connectors to prevent them from coming loose again
now battery stats hang. it remains on a certain percentage and only after a reboot it shows the current stats...don´t know what to do...

Did apply a screen protector that was wet application or get the unit wet in any way? If so, you may have moisture contamination in your unit.

First of all, the above statement makes me shudder.
Anyway, it really does sound the unit has moisture contamination. Not much, but enough to throw a few circuits off.
All this is waaay too funny ! I really didn't know. Damn it now I'm nearly to old to do anything about it. Back to topic, agree it may be moisture. Give it a day or two & a good charge & see what happens. If not try a reset then exchange if not working. Good luck.
the blinking issue only was once and also the battery now seems to be fine.really nice tablet though
The screen on/off problem is resolved with the OTA firmware update and the Honeycomb 3.1 update. No sense returning the Iconia because the new one will still have to wait for the updates to be pushed to the device. The problem will be resolved automatically as soon as the updates are pushed to your device.

So I've had my phone (d803 canada telus) for 2 years and it's been fine for most of it but a few months ago it started to reboot over and over, sometimes when im using an app or sometimes just sitting there.. sometimes it reboots right away and others it takes a whole night of wait to start again. Is there a way to fix this, i have performed a factoty reset and it didng didn't fix the problem.
Weirdly for about phases of a week once in a while the problem would stop amd and id be like whoa cool but it would start again and this time it looks like its gonna stay. Please help? It could be anything. A single bad capacitor could ruin a phone. It's rare but it does happen from time to time. Like raptorddd suggested, try to tot back to stock following THIS GUIDE. Then update to th latest ota and factory reset. If that doesn't fix it then it looks like you need a new phone. Good luck.
Had this issue when my battery started dying.
Got a replacement and the problem went away
If you take the phone apart you may notice the battery could have started to swell

Ok so I took my phone apart and didn't notice anything that weird except that it was reeeaallyy dirty inside, dust all over the place, mainly at the bottom where the speakers are. I cleaned it mostly but I don't think that's the problem. But I looked a little closer at the battery and it doesn't seem swelled like you suggested but it had tiny dents. Would I need to get it replaced? Don't even know how this could have happened. Would pictures help or is the desc enough
