Just wanted to share a setup that I am using and very happy with. XBMC still is a little too buggy for me. Here is what I did. There are many different ways to get these programs on your Ouya. This is used to instruct on how I setup these programs.
1. Get ES File Explorer or any other file explorer with network capability.
2. Get MX Player
3. Open you file explorer program, navigate to your shared folder in your network. Click on video file. The file will play but then it will complain about codecs.
4. Hit the ouya button and go to tools--->settings---->decoder. Check Use H/W+ decoder. This will enable a smooth playback.
5. Now you need audio fixed (DTS, DD plus, etc) go to this thread. Scroll down to Arm v7 with Neon Support and download that and put it on your Ouya.
8. Open the same video file again and hit your ouya button. Tools--->Settings--->Decoder. Scroll down to Custom codec, select. Then point it to the unzipped folder.
I have played all kinds of video files and they play flawlessly. I know there is prob an easier way of doing this. But I thought I would share it.

You don't need any sort of root anything to install or use mxplayer. You should probably hold off on making guides for people if you have no clue what you're talking about.

Cool, Do you not have to sideload any app that is not available from the Ouya store? Anyway you look at it I was just offering a way to play video files from a share drive. Not my intention to mislead anyone with a incorrect way of using the Ouya equipment. If It doesn't need root for sideloading then obviously the guide would be incorrect. However if you use the Google Play store you do have to have root.
You should probably update your post to just say 'side load MX player', dont mention root.
Also you can use, Plex, BS Player, Dice player.... all work fine. However currently HW decoding of vc-1 video(many blu-rays) does not work on the ouya.

Changed, thank you for the response. I have a Roku 3 and Plex is a great program. I just like to see higher definition files play without transcoding. I realize there are many programs that achieve the same goal as MX player. I was just putting this out there because I have tried to do similar things on other devices and not been successful. I didn't realize that it would be scrutinized so much. I have been an android lover since I had my first droid. Just trying to share my findings.

What version of MX player are you using? For me it is crashing. And when i try to load custom codec folder shows empty even though i copied file there. Thanks.
Update:
I figured out. It is working perfect. if you need to go to settings you have to play some video and go to settings through there. If you click on MX Player it will crash.Only problem so far is no surround sound if you have AV receiver. It will only play stereo. But it's good to have alternate video player. Thank you for sharing.

You should just be able to sideload the apps because they don't use superuser.
Personally I still like xbmc but this is nice for those that might not like it

I knew this when I wrote it, but I was thinking about the play store the whole time in my head, which does require root. After tweaking XBMC a little I am using it a little more. But I agree, always good to have another way to do something on the Ouya. I have been a member here for a while, I just don't usually post. This is usually why. Too many smart people on this form, well smarter than me i'm afraid.

Just my $0.02, BSPlayer is better because it has a built in SMB browser, so if you're wanting to play videos over the network but don't wanna use XBMC for some reason, that's my choice...

Hi All,
I'm wondering if anyone has had any success streaming media to their A7. I currently have a NAS drive on my network and stream media to all my other devices (Archos 70, Archos 5 Android, EVO, etc.) but for some reason I cannot get the A7 to actually play anything from this network location.
I have been able to navigate to the files themselves, but playing them has not worked out so well. I've tried a variety of Apps and different file formats, but none seem to work. I can attempt to open files, and even get prompted to use various Apps, but nothing seems to work after that, it just fails. Anyone have any ideas or success with this effort please let me know as this is a biggie for me.
Sorry if this is a dup question, as I could not find anything about this for this device in particular.
And many thanks to Dexter, you've made this device surpass it's otherwise limited capabilities. Seems silly such a quality product is being left behind by the Stream, but this seems to be the model of all tablet makers these days. Pump them out as fast as possible regardless of full functionality and forget about them a month later!
The only way I've gotten streaming to work is by using PlayOn.
hi I can access all my movies on my hard drives and play on my a7 this way
download TVersity media server from tveristy.com. I just use the free version. It will change your home page when you install it so you will need to change it back. Install that on your pc and then add your movie files to the library.
On your a7 download a app called skifta from the market and install that. when you run this choose a media source choose TVeristy media server. Under player choose your a7.
then choose browse and play media you will see your library files you added in tversity and some other stuff. You will need a video player installed on your a7. I have act 1 video player and also rockplayer. It will let you choose which to use when you select movie.
select one and your movie should start. Your movies have to be in a compatable format.
it also will let you play music and view photos
I also have a wd live movie box on my tv. With this same setup I can redirect the movie to wdlive box by choosing it as player and the it will playback the movie on my tv.
Thanks for the advice (both of you). I was really hoping for a more direct approach though. I've used apps like Orb that require you to run a host computer, and my NAS drive (Buffalo Linkstation) has a web app built in, but both these methods have proven very slow and often frustrating when trying to access via mobile networks. It just seems odd to me that the A7 doesn't do this while most other Android hardware does. Granted I'm more familiar with Archos products and they specialize in media players. Will keep trying though, Thanks!

the platform you refer to is different from Tegra2/Nvidia, and you can blame Nvidia for the stock codecs they support.. they partly added mkv's now in latest update.. but 1080p mkv's still stutter on a7 and other tegra2 devices..
LG with their Optimus 2X added their own custom player, and since its incorporated into the framework, its hard to make it run on other devices for now.. but nvidia is primary source for what we can use it for now..
archos is a different story and they havent got what tegra2 can offer for the future, so it might play alot of media's but not perfect for android at all.

I just downloaded mobo player and the codec file for it. I wanted to play video's directly on the internet on my xoom. I thought downloading this would help me but video's are still not playing?
I do not understand the media directory thing is there anything I am missing.
I picked media directory to be my downloads in my Astro file. This is right out of the box. I have done nothing to unlock or root this device.
Can anyone please explain to me what I need to do to play video's from a web page on the net. For example I went to a site for Las Vegas wanted to play video of Terry Feder show would not play?

Did you try tapping and holding the video you want to play then selecting soft decoding? You have to do that to a large majority of videos for the xoom.
Yes I did. When the video appears on the screen there is a small blue dice in the center with a ? on it. There seems to be lots of videos that won't play. Is there anything in the codec file that I need to change. I saw the soft decoding for one of the video extensions?
Just found something that says default using soft decoding in settings I checked it. Still no luck. You tube videos play fine
When I tap the video the screen turns light blue but nothing comes up and their are no options available to select.

Go to metacafe.com any video it does not work. That is just one of the sites. I cannot tell what the video format is? How can i see that. On the right hand bottom of my screen it says autoplay ON. I do not know if that is from Mobo app or something else.
took a spin around the world wide web and seems the videos on your site metacafe are FLV files.
go to the market.. install one of these in the list and see if any will work.
not sure which ones are compatible with the xoom so just go in and check on the tech details. better yet go there with your xoom so it will filter out which ones will work.
you can also just search "flv player" w/o quotes in the market and see what you come up with.

That site seems to use a bunch of different kinds of video. Hulu videos wont work, but the flash videos will if you install flash, obviously. Moboplayer is for mp4, avi, mpeg, and other types of video commonly not found streaming on websites.
Just called Motorola and figured out that Flash Player needed to be downloaded. Do I feel stupid. I thought it came with it and was on it when I got it. I then went back to the site and the video played.
Do you think MoboPlayer will interfere with anything on my tablet. Should I remove it?
Or should I leave it. Don't even know if it works on the xoom. It did not work to get the FLV file working that is supports. Any input would be appreciated.

amazing that an XDA member of a xoom tablet has not heard about moboplayer. thats wild.. rockplayer is made by the same dev that made moboplayer. mobo player is a really great video app! a must have..

Well if you plan to use only on the home network their clear.fi app works. For remote access I have been using subsonic it does require a donation to allow video streaming

How in the heck did you get plex to work? Did you change the default player to something else? If so how?
I load a movie and it times out on every one. When I contacted the makers of plex they say that it is not working on the acer yet and offer a refund.
I use ps3 media server on the pc and upnplay which is free from the android market for the A500 , The ps3 media server trans-codes on the fly and I use mobo player from upn to play the content. easy as 123 setup and works perfectly and also means I can play any file type. 1080p is a bit jerky but 720p is as smooth as silk. Did I mention its all free

my videos pooped right up mine are also in the video folder in my documents
I have PlayOn running on a desktop machine and the PlayOn app on my A500 and Thunderbolt. Works very well over wifi.

I think that the Acer app only shows/shares the stuff you have in my documents. So you can't watch movies through it if you have them on another HD (like I do sadly).
I am able to see all of my share's on any of my drives. But my home network is wide open on this side of the router.
Might check your sharing settings on you pc, and your firewall if applicable.
i do recomend subsonic wholely just a one time donation unoocks video streaming. you select the folders to share music and movies and the app is free on android and one port needed to be opened to view from anywhere tablet phone or say work computer. also to with the ability to download the content to

Plex: Works but slow as hell and it didn't let me skip a part of the movie so I had to watch every movie from the start.
Subsonic: IMHO a Plex clone so I didn't bother with it and I couldn't test it to see if it streams movies any better.
Upnplay: Ugly and clunky interface but it does stream movies from any UPNP server without installing any additional software and it's free. It uses your default browser and it can skip in a movie so I'm using that. It's not pretty but it does work well.

Well if u didn't try streaming with subsonic how do u have an opinion. Works great for me streams great except for blueray rips bit rate is a tab large most likely my mobile connection

I won't donate just to test it but the web interface was worse than what Plex offers and I've tried Plex (was not impressed) so I've just skipped it.
As I've said. The best solution is the one that doesn't require any additional software on my PC. So even though Upnplay is ugly it gets the job done.
P.S.: I have my opinions you have yours so unless don't force your on me and I won't force mine on you. I've compiled a list that would be handy for me a few days ago when I was searching for the same thing and I hope that helps someone. Bickering over trivial stuff sure won't.

Subsonic is free to try, the app is much more intuitive than the web interface when used on an Android device (the web interface of any program that also provides a native application will be much less intuitive on any platform). I'm not saying there is anything wrong with forming an opinion such as yours, but I will say Subsonic and Plex are two different products, trying one piece of one product and using that as a reason to dismiss another different (and competing) product is just being ignorant. If you want to be ignorant, run with it, but don't ask for peoples advice and opinions and simply dismiss them based on your own ignorance. Or, just don't ask for advice if you aren't willing to listen to it. Oh.. wait, that's right.. this isn't even your thread, troll.
Now, as for the OP, if this is simply to watch inside your own network, things like Subsonic, Plex, etc. are more than what you need. All you really need is what mrvanes outlined, or even just a file manager that supports network shares (like File Manager HD, File Expert, EStrongs, etc). Browse to your media and open it (a good file manager will not require to copy to local first) with the program of your choosing.

I've been using Buzz Player that reads all shared folders (SAMBA), its not without its problems, but it works for me.
i have tried them all upnp streams every format avi mp4 mkv audio codecs like ac3 stream beautifully..its free and i acess from any network ...
Looking for a app for playing videos from my windows server. I watch a lot of foreign movies so need subtitles support. Something like the gtvplayer.
Any ideas?
There are a thousand different players on the market but I don't see any that support playing from a network share.
Take a look at this thread.. I do not know about the sub titles.. but there are several apps mentioned here that do exactly what you are asking for.. ITS Called dlna server.. i use the aVIA one but bubble has much more options.. of course you have to turn dlna on .on the windows box(windows media center) or download a dlna server app for windows machine..

BSPlayer.It's free and supports direct streaming without caching the whole file on your device. Buzz player also supports streaming samba shares but it's quite buggy to my experience and it's not free.

that is true es file explorer has a media player that will stream as well But can lag at times.. there are others that do the same im sure..

Almost any File Explorer should do the trick. I have used the following:

File Manager HD (Honeycomb)
ASTRO File Manager
You can navigate to your network share. When you go to open the file, you will be prompted which Media Player you would like to use. So, as long as you have a media player that supports your media, you should be good to go.
Ok this thread brings up a question i have. And maybe something the op should consider . DLNA apps such as bubble aVIA.. they allow you to select where to RENDER THE VIDEO . this can make the video much more smooth if you choose to render on the PC FILE SHARE SERVER.. not the tablet.
playing the video from a file manager .. just opens the video as a network share playing the video on the tablet with the tablets resources...
my Question is.. are the above situations true.. If so DLNA would be faster more smooth and use far less battery on the tablet.. I believe it to be true because playing a video out from tablet thru hdmi cable eats battery .Using dlna is less taxing on the tablet..

I use File Manager HD with rocket player and access my network share directly with no DLNA.
I am not sure about subtitle support as I dont recall seeing them even though the .srt files are there.

Interesting point Erica, I am going to test that out. I have not jumped on the DLNA bandwagon yet just because all my files are on the same network but could see some benefits if I am coming in remotely.

A500 - play without any stutter
Nook Color - required that I copy and paste the file onto local drive, wait 1 min then play without stutter.
Since this is an A500 site, the above method should work without issue...though subtitle is a hit or miss.

As for battery usage through dlna rendering on the PC:
It converts the video on the PC to something the target device can play. There for unless it is rendering it into a format the target player can play with full hardware decoding you would not get any benefit from transcoding on the PC. Plus depending on the profile used it may render the video down to a lower quality.
Dlna can also do pass through in which case no transcoding is done at all.
Dlna is great if you do not want to worry about codec support on your target devices and battery usage will only be lower if the profile for hardware rendering is available on your DNLA server.
I hope all that makes sense to everyone.

Im not big in video playing on my tablet. I just know those options are there.. I Can understand a reduction of the Quality from the desktop pc resolution to that of the tablet.. We have a 28 inch monitor set very very high. As i do digital drawing with CS5. Using my WACOM INTUOS 4 PEN Tablet.. yes a plug here for them. The thing ROCKS. if you are into digital drawing.
Anyway I just do know that using dlna for me uses much less battery. Try starting your GPS'WEB BROWSER and say running a few other apps in the background of your tab.. Launch a video thru file manager network share.. YOU Will see your battery DRAIN VERY Quickly.. Do the same thing but dlna .. IT WILL Last much longer...
This could actaully be tested with a network traffic or data monitoring app. to see what is going on in the background under each situation...

I do not think this is correct. I have watched full length movies on my tab (>1Gb) using a combination of File Manager HD (Or ES File Explorer) and Rock Player and the playback starts immediately. I dont think it is being streamed, just opened and played directly as if it were a local file.
Thanks smishra, then it must be RockPlayer's feature. Haven't been using it for a long time because it didn't support Tegra2 HW acceleration at that time. Just tried MX Video Player and it works as well so streaming is obviously implemented. Sorry if I have misled someone. I don't think file managers play the movie, so it doesn't matter which one you use as long as your player supports streaming.

I use MX Player, browse to the share using the HoneyComb file manager, then when I get to the share open the file and choose MX Player (Install from market first with MX Player codec for ARMv7). It even supports mkvs!
"Cifsmanage" allows you to mount a windows share as a local folder. Once you mount it you can use any video player to access the files. You must be rooted but it works good.

Good point, I just noticed in my Rock player that it wants you to specify the location of the subtitle files. I normally keep these in the same folder as the videos so the only way that I can think of to access them would be to mount using CIFS and then play the video from there with subtitles.
This is probably not anything new, but I didn't see it on Google so here we go:

I want to play some extremely high quality FLAC files (96khz 32bit and higher) that don't initially work on most devices.

Can someone reccommend a way to play audiophile quality flac files on Fire TV?
Maybe some custom FLAC codec to install for obtaining higher quality FLAC support.

For both broad video file format support and FLAC support, I recommend XBMC. You will find that a keyboard is helpful to connect when first setting it up if you're looking to define file paths on your home network. I play my media off of a NAS and XBMC is quite nice.
Adding it to the homescreen can be done by installing Lama, and then using a "sacrificial app" to launch xbmc as a condition of, essentially - you set a Lama trigger that says "when app X is running, run XBMC."
All of that can be done with sideloading - no root required, and although I used root to replace the Fire launcher with XBMC as a launcher, I'm told you can do the launcher swap with Lama as well.
Is there any less diffifcult app to install alongside a codec with full FLAC support.
I don't really care all that much about xbmc because it is designed like a swiss army knife for media when all I need right now is a standalone FLAC player with full 96khz+ and 32bit support.

I have had no luck with XBMC seeing thins on SUB sticks. It see the stick and folder, but will not find videos.
it was one of the first apps I installed...

Interesting. I just installed stickmount to test (I mostly have my keyboard in the USB slot) and was able to play a FLAC file, an AVI, a WMV and an MP4 file from the USB stick I put in.
I'm using the 13.1 that was modified to behave as a launcher, but as far as I know it's otherwise a pretty standard 13.1 build.

Try sideloading MixZing? I think it does FLAC. I really like it on my phone and it knows about folders, which is helpful.
I found a better one called JetAudio Basic.
It even has playback speed control with or without pitch shift.
I downloaded a 192khz 24bit FLAC test file,and it plays perfectly!
Edit:I found an even better one called DeadBeef.
I hope it isn't downsampling the 192khz FLAC file when playing it.
If so,can somebody reccommend a guaranteed 192khz FLAC player app?

In settings, you can check to make it function as an audio player too
IF amazon would just include this app,... and USB mount I would have no reason to root this box. Beyond ridiculous they cripple obvious features that are build into android (what their box is based on.)

The KFTV does not respond to any remote commands when playing a video in VLC. Not able to play/pause, rew/ff, etc. Any idea how to get it working proper?

hey use bsplayer, it works great. the fire tv remote works and it have dts. here's a link http://www12.zippyshare.com/v/69008312/file.html if you have a problem sending it through adb just rename it just bsplayer.
Ah yes.. I sideloaded this player to the wimpy firetv stick .. It works perfectly.. VLC seemed to want more power than the stick can provide. The combination of upnplay and bsplayer has worked out wonderfully..

For anyone reading this thread in 2016, don't waste your life on the advice here: just get Kodi/SPMC or MrMC.
Yeah, I use Kodi exclusively on my Fire TV Stick. No need for root or anything.
But ...
After I upgraded to Jarvis (16), I noticed it hung on some videos, including ones it played fine before. So I went back to the older Helix version.
If anyone knows what's going on, I'd appreciate it. Is Isengard as good/better/worse than the other versions?
The situation of Kodi on Android is not too great and getting worse.
But apps like KODI are bulky swiss-army knives for media and many users reported issues with some even causing device instability when the app is not in use,what if someone wants a lightweight-but-powerful player for only music with full support for 192Khz?
