Can't Download from Some Hosts - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I've actually always had this problem across phones, ROMs, and browsers. When I try to download from certain file hosts, it completes immediately and the file is a few bytes. For example this file: http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23032113221599659
Anybody else have this problem? Any ideas?

That file is only 1.5mb it should d/l instantly. what about a larger file? same result?
and if you try a larger one, post the link here, I will test it also.
we will figure it out.

Both chrome and the default browser work for me over 3G. Are you on wifi? Stock Rom? Any Adblock stuff running?

Tried it data to.
shouldn't matter what rom, could be the ad block, freeze it.

I turned Adaway off. I made sure the host file is clear and ads are visible. Problem is on wifi and mobile. A very odd problem. Most downloads work fine but it's some of those file hosting sites that I have problems with. That would suggest some sort of ad-blocking.

Downloading .zip files from the browser.

I'm using cyanogen's ROM and am having trouble downloading .zip files. I get an error message saying that the file is not compatible. It use to work before he used the stock browser (around beta 4).
I thought this was really useful when updating through recovery so I didn't have keep connecting to my computer. Any help is appreciated.

This happens sometimes even with Astro installed. You will have to go into the Astro options and turn on the downloading option.
Download astro from the market for free and you can begin to start downloading .zip files and many others
Or get downloadcrutch
Or Dolphin Browser, never had any problems downloading any file types with it.
Solved!
Thanks everyone. I thought it was the browser, but Astro fixed the problem easily. The problem correlated with me switching to root explorer and not updating to the new ROM.

Problem Downloading files

Don't have troubles downloading apps from market or staying synced but for some reason it doesn't like downloading through the browser. Says unsuccessful download, file format incompatible with your device, anyone else have this?
Or know of how to fix? Not sure if its sd card issue or what.

Download astro file manager from the market, and there is a setting in it to fix that. Though read the warning about reading PDF's in Gmail.
I used to have Astro manager but had uninstalled it because I preferred another one but I reinstalled it and didn't change any settings and now it works, thanks!
I did see the option of using the downloader inside Astro and the warning to shut it off when opening attachments from gmail, never noticed that before.
But nice catch and thanks again.
Try a different browser. I have to use Dolphin to get some things to download correctly. Hope this helps.

[Q] After fooling around with AdAway I have no internet connection

I was messing with AdAway to try to get it to work on a Stock Rooted ROM, and unfortunately, was never able to get that to work. So after trying to revert the hosts file, AdAway failed for whatever reason, and then I was stuck without internet. I can't browse the internet via Google Chrome, and I can't access the internet using the facebook application or any other application that relies on the internet.
I was wondering if someone could give me a default hosts file, or if someone could help me troubleshoot why I am unable to completely connect to the internet on 3G, 4G or WiFi.
I am not above resetting the device, but, I wanted to leave that as a last resort.

If you are, as you say rooted then just use a root explorer (I use RootExplorer, also can use ROMToolbox, ES Pro etc..) to delete the current hosts file; in here /etc/hosts and then reboot and it should be created anew.
Also check your date and time settings. If they are not synched many things will not work

How to use Mega to download without the App

Many people including me have tried to download something from the Mega host, just to run into troubles, and if you are like me, you dont want to install the app...
I found a little trick i thought i'd share, hopefully its the right place to share it.
When you run into a thread that has a link to Mega, you are normally greeted with the nice Mega App redirect page. To get around this:
1) Change your browser to Desktop mode on the current page you are on, not on the Mega redirect page.
2) Most importantly, tap and hold the download link and copy the link address.
3) Paste the link address into your current desktop viewed tab, and go.
You should now be able to get to the actual download without the app and/or fuss.
Cheers!
Thank you for sharing this it was kind of hard to figure out and it was annoying to have their ad for the app always appearing.

Awesome! Now do you know how to get the browser to open tabs in the background?

The app doesn't support downloading from folders anyway. So your method is still the best bet even if the app is installed. I should also mention that this method works with the stock browser I couldn't get it to work with Dolphin.

You can try entering this into your browser- i didnt have to touch anything once i hit enter., just paste the link and go. Afterwords, try tapping and holding a link, open in new tab, and it should open in the background.

Thanks for the help. It didn't work. I exited the browser (cause the Relaunch Browser button on the bottom didn't work), but still, tabs open in foreground. Weird that this is not an option. (BTW I'm using the built in brower)
Seems it's not working anymore with stock browser under CM12.1
Just curious, why not just install the app? It is IMO one of the best cloud storage/file sharing services you can use, way better than dropbox or box. Would love to understand why people don't use it.

Because it's slow, it downloads to a cloud 1st then to my phone and never allows me to use download booster so that's it in a nutshell for me anyways
Seems that Mega does no more allow uploading img files
I usually upload stock e.g. boot img, recovery.img, persist.img whenever I switch or update the ROM (used to do it on several devices and never had problems)
Yesterday I wanted again but it didn't upload. Then I tested:
- same img files that I uploaded with no problems time ago to Mega, but now uploading to another folder on Mega
- by renaming img files to bin files
- I even downgraded from the recent Mega 4.3 apk to 4.2.2 (because the last time, two weeks ago I successfully uploaded two img files and I checked now that Mega 4.3 apk was updated afterwards, just few days ago)
But no avail
I can upload my stock or Android patched boot images but ONLY if I ZIP them
However, I checked with a TWRP img file (for flashing TWRP) and it worked
Also, all my img files that were previously uploaded to Mega are still there and can be downloaded
I'm an old Mega user, with 50 GB limit, and I have 26 GB of free space (boot images are about 20 MB each), hence there is no lack of space problem - btw, I just uploaded an even bigger zip file with no problem

No Internet connection possible (Wifi or mobile) after the deinstallation of AdAway

Hello XDA Assist Team,
A few days ago I installed AdAway (via F-Droid) to increase mobile surfing speed. Now I got the problem that while using Wifi, suddenly every app had a 10-15 seconds delay before actually starting to download/ starting to load the web page etc. Once "getting a firm grip" on the connection, the download speed was fine as usual (120 mbit/s). This problem did occur on every app while using wifi, but not while using mobile internet.
So I uninstalled AdAway. Now no application can access the internet. Regardless of wifi or mobile internet, no application managed to access the internet since the deinstallation.
The only host files in the /etc/host folder seems to be the localhost on "127.0.0.1" and another localhost with "::1" . At least that's what the Hosts Editor app said. I installed it via USB to check on the host file.
My system:
Oneplus Two, Oxygen OS 3 (Android 6.0.1), rooted
installed were AFWall+ and Xprivacy. I deactivated, then deinstalled them to make sure they won't interfere. The only other App I installed recently is Cerberus. Except for devouring my battery alive, it did not have any negative effects I could observe.
I tried searching the Unofficial AdAway Thread, but I was discouraged by the 600+ pages. I tried, but didn't didn't find anything useful. I posted my question there as well, but got no reply.
I don't have many skills regarding Android. I installed the OS, xposed framework etc. by closely following the instructions given here on XDA. I have a basic understanding on how to use all these applications but I don't know much about what happens behind the UI. I would really appreciate if you could help me out here and point me in the right direction, prefereably without having to nuke my OS. My last Nandroid backup is about 2 months old, unfortunately.
With kind regards,
Fennec
Edit: My progress:
1. I found a tutorial of how to find and delete the hosts file (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2717261) . It was stated that android would rebuild the missing file on reboot. That was not the case. Now in /system/etc there is no "hosts" file and my Internet still does not work. Hope that helps. I tried googling to find an untouched hosts file that I could copy into the folder, was not lucky yet.
2. Found a hosts file here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s2/help/hosts-file-missing-to-t2276818 . Copied it into the folder. Did not work. Help.
Please help me out.
Solved!
Writing down the facts I realized that I haven't tried disabling cerberus yet. I don't know why uninstalling adaway triggered the internet problem but Cerberus seems to have been the cause. It ran for 2 weeks without problem. Now my internet is free again. Either the deinstallation triggered the problem or it was a very nasty coincidence, coinciding with cerberus making trouble. Or maybe cerberus didn't like the system files being tinkered with and decided to lock a potential remote attacker out.
