[Q] Can't find sd card in recovery - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

I having a problem with my sd card not being read in recovery. I have a 64 gb sandisk micro sd. It works fine in the gallery and everything else on the phone but when I go to the recovery to try to install a new ROM or something on the external card, it says it can't find sd card. Can someone please help?

Use TWRP recovery.

I have same card, and the latest from twrp recognizes it fine. I think its 2.5.0.2 and above.

To fix your problem is to convert your car to FAT32 EXFAT isnt supported or it might be vice versa lol but converting the card to another version will do the trick

Thanks for the help guys. TWRP worked.

Can't Mount SD Card in CWM 5.x!

So i went to flash a ROM and now it says while flashing that the flash was aborted because the system can't mount the SD card. I'm using the newest CWM and have flashed stuff before. Not sure what to do, it wont let me make backups, restore, or flash anything.
I find it kinda strange, because once I reboot my tablet, everything's working fine, but it's not letting me install a custom rom
And yes, I have...
1. Unlocked by booloader.
2. Rooted my phone along with installing superuser.
3. Installed CWM recovery through fastboot (or whatever it's called, lol)
Has anyone gone through the same thing?
Bump....
Cm on guys I really need to get this rolling ...
What class SD Card are you using? I have issues with CWM on this Tablet reading anything above a class 6. I have a Class 10 SD Card that I have to swap Out and put in a different slower class card to flash roms and what not so I personally have had to deal with this because of the speed. Anyway hope that helps you out.
I'll try another sd card and see if it work out. Thanks for the advice!!
Bump. Using a different SD card didn't work, unfortunately

Back up all ur SD card files to PC
In CWM, you will find a Advance/ partition Sd card
Use this and make a 128 mb one, Reboot to CWM and CWM will recognize your card.

thank you very much....really helpful
Please help me i have a similar problem. I tried to partition it and it worked but it wouldnt recognize my sd card. Idk what happened maybe i formatted by mistake and now i dont have a system (or atleast it wouldnt boot up) and i have a cwm that doesnt mount recovery so i cant flash.
please someone help me! i need my phone
FIXED!
Nevermind. I did it wrong. U were supposed to partition sd card make it 128-128 and then while still in advanced setting restart launcher. Then you have to go to mount the card manually through mounts and storage.
if you just shut down the device it wouldnt work.
thank you for helping me fix this demonntl

external sd card doesn't mount

hello. yesterday i had issues with my 3 years old 2gb micro sd card. it didn't mount, i got the message "it had beeb removed" , and blank sd card. i thoght it was time for an update. i bout an 8 gb micro sd card but it doesn't seem to work either. it says damaged/blank sd card and sometimes it only works when i choose to format it. i tries formating with pc and didn't work. i also tried formating data, cache and dalvik cache but that doesn't work. i want to install the 2.3 official update but since sd card is not working i can't. so i'm stuck. is there any way i can flash 2.3 withoud ex sd card? i tried using other cards, but they don't work too. if i get it to work , when i reboot the phone the same message comes up

What ROM are you using?
By the way, android needs to format a new sdcard so it can be used to store data on.

aurora ics. i want to get back to stock 2.3.5 cause can't stand the battery drain any more but i can't as bootloader doesn't recognize the sd card
So your sdcard is pretty much completely dead? Can your computer recognize your SD card? If your pc can recognize it but your phone can not then you should send your phone to service. Also try reformatting the SD card and installing Aurora ICS by doing a clean install through your internal SD card.
EDIT: You can install zips from internal SD card using TWRP v2.5.0.0 by forumber2.

Hey. Thanks for your reply. Yes computer recognizes the card just fine. I tried formating the card but don't work. There are times when card is being recognized but not for too long. And that happens to recovery mode. Can u give me steps or link to flash rom via internal sd?

Ask someone on the u8800 forum. I have a u8800pro sorry. I'm assuming that you have to move the zip into your internal memory, then install twrp 2.5.0.0 and choose install zip from internal memory.

yeah, the thing is that i cannot use my internal memory. when i try to download the rom from my phone it asks for sd and when i try to move rom from sd to internal sd it says error. i also tried to make my internal sd card "external sd card" but when i try to safe the system/etc file it says it can't be saved
Why don't you download the ROM to your computer and move it to your internal SD card with a USB cable?

I realised it is my new sd card. Its micro sd too but a little different in shape. So I just used a tape to get it well attached to the port. Now everything works good

Help with 64GB SDcard

Just got a SanDisk microSDXC 64GB card from Amazon for my Galaxy S4. I don't want to mess anything up, so I've got a few questions.
Are these cards formatted with exFat? How can I tell? Do I need a special kernel to have it work? Will the stock kernel work?
Should I format it from within the phone before use?
Any other problems/concerns I should have before I copy all my music and ROMS over to the card?
Thanks in advance,
Foulwx...in Atlanta tonight where there really is some foul weather.
I recently purchased a 32GB SanDisk Ultra, and followed the instructions at these two links, for moving apps to the sd card:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2142844 - mini partition tool guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2285221 - link2sd and foldermount
If you have some way to connect the card to your PC, the mini partition tool guide is really easy to follow. If you don't plan on moving apps to the card, you could just toss it in the phone and format it there. I screwed up the partitions a couple of times on my own (formatted the card 5 or 6 separate times, trying out different filesystems and partition sizes), before I found the mini partition tool guide, so I don't think there's much chance of permanently ruining the card.
If you formatted the card into fat32, then it would be more compatible without modifying anything on the phone.

You can connect the microSD to your PC to determine what format it currently is. If you stick in the phone, it'll format to exFat. The exFat format can be recognized by the stock kernel as well as the agat kernel and the ktoonsez kernel.
I have the same one. Just put it in my phone and went from there. Guess it auto formats it to exfat that way.
I flashed bluKuban and had to switch to agats kernel to see it. But otherwise works well.

Is there an advantage to exFat over FAT32?

exFat can have files over 4gb.
I killed my sandisk 32gb ultra card ...created the fat 32 partition and then the exfat and it won't be ready by the phone at all. When I put it into the computer it shows it only has 30.6 MB...I'm unable to format it through windows or with another app. Any help would be appreciated

Insert it into your phone, and format it there. That "may" fix it for you.

Its not being read by the phone it doesn't even mount..
I'd try plugging it into the computer and running a partitioning program. It should see the card no matter what. Partition it to whatever format you want.

Theres one computer where it sees it and I connect it through an HP printer that had an SD slot.. Windows shows it as 30.6MB and asks me to format it but the format fails. I tried SD card formatter, HP USB disk tool..I don't know what to do
OK, I loaded all my music, pictures, and roms onto my 64SDCard from my laptop. Windows says it is exFat. Booted and seems to work fine.
Then I went into OUDhs recovery to try and make a nandroid. It can't mount the external_sd. Suggestions? Do I need a different recovery or kernel? I'm on the stock kernel.
Thanks again.
Edit: I installed TWRP 2.5.0.3 and it worked fine, I think. I haven't tried a restore yet.
I finally gave up with exFat and, after some research here on XDA, used Mini Tool Partition Wizard Home Edition to format my SDCard to fat32. I just made a Nandroid with OUDhs recovery. Hopefully, everything will continue to work OK and I don't need any 4GB files on my card.

Have you mount it in TWRP?
I tried to mount SD card but the X does not stay on when I try to pick it. When I click on external SD , it only shows " up a level"
The card works fine when using any of the ROMs and can be seen no problem, it just doesn't show in recovery.
I USD the same card on my note 3 and did not have a problem.

External Micro SD read only file system- (Only in recovery)

Hi,
I have tried a couple of cards in my Note 4 and they work fine within the OS and fine if i uses them in my PC - i can read and write to the cards but when i go into recovery i can't make a backup or install a rom from the external SD, i always get a message saying the card is read only and installs or backups fail?
I have formatted the card to all formats and it makes no difference.
Anybody got any ideas to to fix this as i am running out of space on my internal.
I have used Phils recovery and am currently using the latest version of TWRP.
Thanks for any help.
