Highly disappointed with camera speed after testing S3 and note II - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After playing with the S3 and note II camera at the store I'm highly disappointed with or shutter speed on this phone. There is no reason it cannot near instant when you push the button. Is this on Samsung's radar or will it not be fixed for over a year? Considering switching to the One when it congress or because a quick camera is necessary when your have young kids who don't sit still.

good for you,, you want a cookie what does complain get you nada dont like dont buy move on simple as that

On MEA rom I've noticed improvement in this case. Shutter is noticeably faster with this rom on my 9505.

my GT9500 camera is opening in less than 0.2 sec, focus done.... I am with MF3 FW, so I am sure camera issue(s) is (are) corrected starting from MEA FW. Now we receive MF8 release and may be some more "adjustment".
I bought this phone mostly for the camera! And I was very sad with the camera behavior at first tests.....(MDK original firmware)
Now happy man!

How fast is the shutter? I have to assume this camera shutter is a firmware software problem. The front facing camera is fine.

No question about Shutter (speed), it is immediate, no delay, even when focus is somewhere out. in the dark with flash ON it is less than half second, focus included.
It is much better than my old and not very obsolete SONY TX 7 camera.
I come from a 2011 SONY Xperia Kyno, was laggy at opening and very slow and unpredictable at shutter result.
Now I can say S4 is a new world. Sorry i can't compare with S3 cam but I am sure it is much better.
Note! I have a GT9500, not the same camera as the 9505 but speed should be the equal.

just give up, root it and flash a custom kernel HAHAHA ^^

What was Samsung thinking? With 6.3 billion dollars worth of phones(retail that is) selling within the first month. If I was running that company I would SO look out for the little guy, the customer, they would be the first priority!! I would've made sure that the camera was functioning properly. Yeah, that's who I care about, when I'm in my jet or yacht, I'm thinking about the customer, yeah, they matter the most.

[Q] Is this the best phone for 400€?

As the topic title says, i'm looking for a new phone to replace my boring xperia s (bootloader loocked...) and the maximum i wanna spend is 400€. So,for this money the oppo find 5 is the best option? The feature that i most apreciate is taking photos, and my xperia s do it very well...

The camera is OK but nothing amazing in my experience which is fine for me and Faux kernel has done wonders my battery life (+30-40%). Not sure the camera can compare to the Xperia.
Despite those niggles, I'd recommend the F5 above others to friends if asked but it depends on your needs. I certainly prefer it over the Note 2 and Nexus 4. For me is the sweet spot between size, screen, performance and design.
What else is on your short list?

Exactly the switch I made XS->Find5. I thought about getting the HTC One or the S4, but since I planned on running a custom ROM, I didn't want to pay for features I wouldn't use anyway.
Regrets? No. The Find5 has a Sony Sensor as camera, AFAIK the same as in the XZ. On stock ROM, the cam is pretty good, not so much on custom ROMs, though, usual closed source binary blob problems.

Hi!
If you are looking a brand new one, maybe this is the one with best camera for this price (I dont know anything about Nokia and WP) you can buy for that amount.
If you dont mind, maybe you can take a Xperia Z (same sensor, but better app) in the second market.
P.S: Yes, this is my first post in about 3 years LOL! (I prefer reading)

at the beggining i was thinking about xperia z (i'm a huge fan of the xperia line) or htc one (i don't like the samsung plastic), but i reconsidered that ... 550€ or more for a phone? i think it´s to much, so i stablished the 400€ limit, and for that money, and new phones (not used) i'm in between nexus 4 or the oppo find 5 ( i believe they are the only with superb specs and not so expensive phones ). But the nexus 4 is 4.7 inch screen, and an 8mp camera ( but i guess the 8mp i just a number).
3 things that i consider in a phone : camera; battery; development.
So, what you guys say?
If camera is a priority then you may be better looking elsewhere.
The Find 5 camera is OK in good light but struggles otherwise. My wife has a Nexus 4 and I don't rate that camera either.

I agree the Oppo is nothing to get mad excited about. The camera is very noisy. Actually in HDR mode my pictures on the Nexus 4 turned out way better!

Never had the chance to compare to a Xperia S.
But for the claims made by their commercial it doesn't live up to the promise.

I too am interested in this phone, one of my main concerns is battery life.
When you say you have about 30-40% more battery life, how many screen on time are you talking about? 5-6 hours?
Thank you.

Well you can forget the Stock firmware even with fauxes Kernel it will suck you dry. The best experience as far as battery life i had so far was with Cyanogenmod. Even so it is not running an optimized Kernel it seems to handle power mangement way better!
5-6 hours screen on is way over what you will be able to achieve with normal day 2 day use. For sure you will max out at the moment at 4 hours screen on time.
If you are looking for a new phone with lot's of battery life i would hold of another 1-2 month and see what others have to offer because Oppo didn't even release 4.2 yet but they are planning on in early August. Until then don't bother!
so, in conclusion, despite the problems with the camera ( which i think it's a software problem, not hardware ) for 400€, and with a custom rom, the oppo it's the best phone on the market?

Sorry just saw this... I've tried most of the stock/beta ROMs and as a light to moderate user, it lasts me about 24-36 hours. Without faux kernel I would get around 3 to 3.5 hours screen on (email, twitter, browser, Tapatalk, watching a TV show, taking pics/video and a few calls).
With faux setup for battery life, I can get 4.5 to 5 hours doing the same stuff and there isn't really a performance hit as I'm not doing much needing the phone to run at full speed for long.
It was really the idle drain that was killing it at around ~1.5%-2% per hour rather than ~0.8% with faux. Usually, I'm on wifi and have GPS on and leave them on when sleeping so it was overnight that saw a big improvement.

Yeah I used Stock to for a while and when you do close ups the camera makes some pretty nice pictures. But as soon as contrasts aren't really there anymore it gets potentially noisy.
I mean how much can you really expect from a smartphone camera sensor without any optics to adjust depth.
Your pictures are nice. I made some nice ones myself but they don't measure up to HTC One's Ultrapixel contrast and light condition abilities.
Funny part about all of this is probably that drivers neither on Stock or Custom are really optimized.
I do though still think the state the phone is in right now it is not worth it. Neither Stock Software nor Custom give you a really great experience with the device right now.

After trying numerous stock and custom ROM/kernel combinations, I have to disagree. Last week's Chinese Firefly is, IMO, very usable in terms of performance, battery life, and reliability.
I posted some findings here:

kitkat camera - how improved is it

Hi,
I read two opinions in another thread, one said the camera quality is improved in kitkat, the other opinion said there was no difference.
My only reason for maybe upgrading to kitkat is if the camera is better. I dont want to upgrade otherwise as my moto g is working fantastically on 4.3 right now.
So would people be able to let me know if they think the camera is improved on kitkat, especially if it manages to focus faster and better.
Thanks.
I haven't noticed any difference, also tried focal but it's even worse, except at low light I think it's a little better.
Does anyone else have any suggestions? Has anyone tried LG camera?
It's the same. Motorola needs to push out a firmware update which is not part of the Android OS.
You should update to 4.4.2 anyway because its free, its an improvement in performance and there's no reason not to upgrade.

@scott_doyland, you should always keep you device on the most up-to-date software possible. Also included in updates are various security updates to keep your device safe from viruses and such.

I probably didn't state it clearly but I was thinking if 4.4.1 was aimed at the Nexus 5 camera, why would it improve the Moto G camera unless they have the exact same app and same issue.
My next thought is does Google/Motorola even think they have an issue with the Moto G camera? They obviously knew customers where unhappy with the N5's camera but unless they feel there's an issue with the Moto G, there will be no fix.

I agree here... I think everyone should take a couple minutes to voice their opinions to Motorola about the camera. Heck, all you have to do is live chat on the Help app and ask if they plan on releasing a software update to improve the camera quality. I think if enough of us do this, we could see results.

me too, but sometimes you need it. For example, you see some celebrity. But I will not be surprised when that celebrity refuse a photo on your MOTO G. That noise reduction is terrible. Just too much. If this will be fixed, I think that'll be decent camera.

I did a live chat with Moto using the help app, I told them the camera takes terrible pics and asked if they were planning a software update for the camera app... The CS rep I was chatting with basically ignored the question and wanted me to clear the data on the camera and reboot the phone. Lol

Is Motorola cheap (£99) because of cheap Camera? Not sure but you cannot have all top spec for this price range. Personally I don't think any update will improve this camera, more likely it's hardware issue. Anyway still great device.
Defy+ made way better pictures than this. KK doesn't improve it.
If anyone's interested, I did a quick write up in the themes & apps section on how to replace the stock Moto cam with the KitKat AOSP camera, which imo takes far better pics. Root is required.

Hello Xda members, I currently have i9300 (S3) and willing to go for a high end phone, I am amazed with Note 3 specs and S-pen, but shocked about how people say both N9000 and N9005 lag and they drop frame while playing games, would like to know your opinions and recommendations for other phone to buy, thank you in advance.
No lag or dropped frames ever for me, only game I play is Dead Trigger 2 and it runs perfectly.
By the way, why are you posting here if you want a recommendation for a device that isn't going to be a Note 3??

No lag on my device.
Ever since I use it on MJ7 4.3 stock non-rooted, NB7 4.4.2 stock non-rooted and rooted, NC2 custom ROM. All no lagging, and to be frank eversince 4.4.2, the device even smoother.
The best phone in my opinion of all Samsung phone currently, in terms of smoothness and battery. You won't regret to buy. If your country have N9005 (LTE), you better by this one, as snapdragon has more support on this Note 3 forum, because more ppl use it compare to the exynos. But if your country only have N900, then no choice.
PS :
If you ever buy it, first thing that you have to do is download the multitouch test app from google play, and try to touch by 10 fingers (and try to move the 10 fingers around the screen. The 10 fingers should be still detected wherever you move them, then your screen is okay). If got problem, return it direct. This Note 3 device has issue with its multitouch screen, other than that, all are good. :good:
Cheers.
The note 3 camera has problems. The wi-fi and/or GPS interfere with it in normal light and mostly in low light conditions showing up as horizontal lines on screen and when you take the picture. I was expecting a much better camera on a 700€ phone and it has made me question if i'll ever buy a samsung product again.
My stylus has been used a total of maybe 3 times. Never touched it again.
The rest is all great.

You pay 700 euro for the phone, not the camera. Do some basic research into sensor chips before you blather on about camera quality in smartphones. I've explained it numerous times.

and if you are on 4.4.2 and still have the issue, and you haven't rooted, why don't go to the service center. claim from them, since some of us not experience it (especially after 4.4.2).

The only way to get a decent shot with less than perfect light is to use the stabilizer, which as many of you know slows down the pictures as it has to process the picture. This is VERY annoying to me. My iPhone 5s takes a much better shot and instantly without processing.
Has anyone found a fix for this be it prop settings or alternate camera apps?
I have to imagine there is a fix for this...
My last iPhone was the 5 (had the 4s before it). Apple sure has the whole "just works" thing down. That said, I REALLY like the Note 3 camera and the screen - I think it's better than the 5 - but in low light, the processing thing is INCREDIBLY ANNOYING. For a phone with this hardware, you'd think a 2 second "processing" bar would be a thing of the past.
Yea, so anyone find a fix? I want to take pics of my kid and don't have time to wait between pictures...

I am also interested - so "bump" --- I can't stand the "processing." I remember the 4.3 roms had a mention that prevented this. I wonder if the 4.4.2 roms will get it?

I mean seriously. Are these two accounts just for straight trolling or what? I'm so confused.
A Fix!
Hey guys I found a fix!
After poking around on my rom (Beans) I noticed they had the option for the CM 11 camera app so I grabbed it...
BOOM instantly better quality, speed, the works. :good:
So seems like the stock camera app was just terrible. CM got it right and now I'm really happy with the quality.
I compared both cameras and in almost ever case the note 3 was on par or even better than my 5s.
If you guys want some compare shots between both android cams and vs. iphone 5s let me know and i'll post some.
If you want the CM 11 camera I'm sure a little goggling will get you the APK.
I'd also love to see what your experiences are and if you found the CM camera app to your liking.

Ah ok, CM 11. Well its awesome.
I really miss a macro mode. I take a lot of close up detail photos for work. Now I use an eye loupe over the lens and it actually works better than before but.. you would have to carry it in your pocket...
On a side note I find the kit kat camera faster than the jellybean camera.

The CM11 camera has macro mode.
Can anyone provide a link to a legitimate download for the CM11 camera? I'm always a little worried of an apk from a Google search. Lol. Unless it is from a reputable website.

Not a problem, hopefully you like it.

[REFERENCE] To all those looking to purchase the Mate 8.

There are many people who come to xda to read reviews and tests about a device before purchasing it, some even check for custom ROMs to see if one has been released but always think more will come in the future. As it is now Custom ROMs based off CM or AOSP is NOT possible. It may NOT be possible in the future either so please buy accordingly.
Indeed.
Single most reason (along with camera) this device is not in my greedy hands already. Shame, really! :crying:

Camera is great best I've seen in a while. Better than Note 4 about up to par with V10 in my opinion
Yeah thats true....Glad I am not super big fan of CM. This is just a perfect phone for me specially with the battery life. Camera is pretty good too specially the day shots.
I use layers. Works for enough for me

In that case I do not quite understand why most of the photos I've seen (also on XDA) are "adequate", at best :rolleyes"

Most have been taken before updates to address the issue. Low lighting is what kills the camera but it kills every camera on nearly every phone.

The camera actually is not that bad in low lighting. I used Zenfone 2 previously, much worst.
