I flashed cm 10.1 and then gapps, gapps writes over the gallery.apk so it changes the camera. I've noticed this with a few roms. I tried removing the apk from the gapps zip but for whatever reason the install fails. Any way I should go about this differently

delete the gallery apk in /system/app/ using a root file exlporer, replace it with the gallery apk you want to use(in /system/app/), then reboot. itll install itself upon booting up.

I saw you guys were having trouble with space and I was having the same issue with my Motorola Triumph. This is just copied from my original thread at http://androidforums.com/triumph-al...-beta-cm9-cm10-w-google-now-instructions.html
Hello guys and gals. After spending hours trying to figure out what I could delete from the system to make room for Gapps on CM10, I even tried to resize partitions, I came to the conclusion that the Gapps will have to be stored elsewhere. So, I came up with a solution, by installing the apps to /data/Gapps and then symlinking the files to /system, and it worked. So since there are so many people trying to get Goggle Now on CM9, I figured I would make modified Gapps zips for both CM9 and CM10.
I need some feedback on this, but I did flash it and everything seems to be working. I'm sure this will help a bunch of other devices that have smaller system partitions also.
I don't think Google should have any issues with this as I haven't changed any files that where in the zip just moved them around and modified the updater-script.
Symlinked Gapps for ICS:
Right now, after install it uses 23.3MB and the bulk of the files are installed to /data/Gapps
I was able to install Google Now offline and then these gapps and have 8 MB free.
symlinked-gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip
Symlinked Gapps for JB:
Right now, after install it frees up 0.1 MB and the bulk of the files are installed to /data/Gapps
symlinked-gapps-jb-20121011.zip
Enjoy!

This is only for the official CM 10.1
CM Roms are already light weight Roms compared to stock Crapsung firmwares but still I find some of the apps unnecessary for me.
So I made this CWMR flashable zip to remove unnecessary apps.
I could have made a custom GAPPS zip but there are some apps that come from CM Nightly that I don't need. So instead of downloading the nightly and deleting the apps, I flash the Nightly as it is then flash my zip to remove these apps.
Apps Removed
Apollo
Browser
Calendar
Email
Exchange
CMWallpapers
Galaxy4
Gmail
GmsCore
HoloSpiralWallpapers
LiveWallpapers
MagicSmokeWallpapers
NoiseField

PhoneSky
QuickSearchBox
Stk
Talkback
TVOut
VisualizationWallpapers
VideoEditor
VoiceDialer
Why did I remove Google Play (PhoneSky.apk) and Google Play Services (GmsCore.apk) ?
Because my zip will install the latest version of both.

I don't use stock browser and calendar.
And you can download Gmail, Google Search and Talkback from the play store, thats what I did.
Need to mount system
Thanks for the idea. This is useful.
However, for this to work (at least on my devices), I think you will need to mount /system in your updater-script. Without it, the script won't work.

You can manually mount system.
I'll update the zip this weekend with new updater script that uses busybox.
Everytime I turned on my phone or if it rebooted, I always get:
Android is upgrading
-----------------------------
Starting Apps.
I am on stock ROM, TWRP recovery, Faux kernel. I think this happens after I wiped dalvik/cache in the recovery. Any idea how to stop it? It's nothing very major though as it only takes a few seconds.
are you using any sound/volume mods? or any other flashable mods? i think awesomebeats dies this, at least others have complained about it wiping the dalvik after every reboot.

That's normal if you've wiped the Dalvik cache, and no you can't stop it.
Edit: so wait, this is happening even when you reboot normally after not wiping any caches or flashing a kernel?

yes.. and it updates apps after delvic wipe.. but in my case whenever i restart I see the "Android is upgrading" box for about 3-5 sec.. no update app progress bar.. and when I wipe delvic this upgrading apps takes like a min or so with my 150+ apps.. but this "Android is upgrading" dialogue box appears only for 3-5 sec..
I am using PA 3.99 with franco kernel.. once booted every thing inside is running smoothly and no fc's...
Same here. No odex files in app folder. No wipe, no cache clearing. Plain reboot. And Android is upgrading message on every boot. (Starting apps)
No optimizing apps message though.

Wouldn't it be related to "zipalign apk on each boot" parameter ? or an other init script put in place by a dirty flash (no /system or /data format) or a kernel... ?
Seems likely. Could you explain in detail kindly?

Have a look in the files located in this folder for example (maybe there's another location for init scripts) :
- /system/etc/init.d/
- /system/addon.d/
and open each one, to see what are the tasks contained

Removed the scripts present in init.d folder and then booted with empty folder, but message still present.
Checked the addon.d folder, but those scripts are only for backing up gapps etc.
Not sure where else to try. Please advise.
Thanks.

Did you try to re-flash your (stock) ROM (and the kernel after 2 reboots) with wiping only /cache and dalvik-cache ? with latest 2.6.2.0 TWRP ?

A pity that so much details are missing : what did you do before it happened ?
What's your set up ? rom, kernel ? after having update your rom ? kernel ? apps ? which versions ?
Did you try to revert to a clean install after having backup up your apps+datas ?

im sorry, just wanted the OP to know that he is not the only one with this "problem" by the way im rooted stock rom and kernel, some apps start up when i boot like nova launcher, lucky patcher sidebar and udn. But i am not looking for a fix for this as this does not take that long and i just said that to let the OP know that he is not alone with this "problem"
Sent from my Nexus 4
Ok guys,
Here's the solution. Don't flame me for talking about unholy stuffs. I'm posting this only because it is the cause of the problem.
If you are using LP or such tools to create .odex files of some app in /app folder. It won't cause any boot msg.
But after you dirty flash a ROM, that .odex files somehow gets backdated and causes the UPGRADING msg.
Fix is, delete the odex files, and re create them if needed. Once after every dirty flash.
Sent from my Nexus 4
I have found fix for this error, it is mainly due to odex files which are created by lucky patcher so deleting these files using lucky patcher itself will surely remove this error with 50 percent success rate. Here's the fix; open lucky patcher, there in lower left section you can see Toolbox, click that Toolbox then select 4th last option i.e Remove all odex files.Thats it android will reboot on itself and vola no android is upgrading. .
Check out attachment for help.

I'm pretty new to the Nook Color forum, but have been around flashing ROMS/GAPPS for a while. So I flashed the latest CM11 nightly build and associated GAPPS on a newly formatted and imaged SD. Everything looked good on first glance, but I could not run any google apps. I know that the Play Store is not included in the GAPPS zip and in fact it's a pretty stripped down version, but something doesn't makes sense.
I inspected the /system/app folder and noticed that there wasn't a google framework apk even though that file is in the GAPPS zip. Also Gmail got installed, but naturally did not work. I tried sideloading google framework and the play store but to no avail. I've been scouring the forums to see if I could find some direction, but haven't found my particular problem.
Does anyone have any advice on how to get google services working?

I had the same problem and I watched the install carefully and all of the GApps packages that I was using were failing part way through and not completing the install far enough to get to the Play Store install. The Play Store is in the GApps packages. The way I solved this was to try all off the packages on the following URL until one of them installed Play Store before the install failed:

I had no problems using the gapps mentioned in the first page of the CM11 Install thread.
Did you use the new generic-sd-rev8b-zip mentioned here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1941858
You might try formatting the sd card again, install cm11 first, then install gapps after the first boot up.

gapps package is: gapps-kk-20140105-signed.zip
install: copy the zip to the root of the SD card, reboot into SD recovery
Messages: the first part seems to be normal, then there are a few errors that pop up which start with
cannot access tmp/install-optional.sh
I confirmed there is an install-optional.sh file in the zip
I also see where it is called in the updater-script in the zip and the lines after that are failing as well.

It is normal that the install-optional.sh would fail. But you said the lines after it fail too. You mean the 'set_metadata_recursive" lines are failing? If so, does it say why?

it says :cannot find directory /system/etc/preferred apps, cannot find directory (i think) system /etc/g-prop and a few other lines. is there any way to stop the auto shutdown? I can't read it fast enough
Update: ok so I created some directories called in the set metadata section and reflashed and got no errors after the install-optional.sh error. I don't see any additional apps installed. should I be seeing something or do I have to manually install google apks?

CM11 gapps install
This worked for me: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=49942253&postcount=529
I have successfully rooted my T230 and installed TWRP 2.8.0.1. I now want to update the Google system apps with the latest available. I currently do this on my HTC One X running CM11 with the PA-GAPPs from here. I also modify the .zip file contents with the latest when they come out - I usually check here.
Now I tried this on the T230 and the script starts but exits saying 'Incompatible GApps Currently Installed' - I wasn't expecting it to work to be honest.....
I still want to update the Google system apps in /system/app and /system/priv-app to the current ones as the ones in the OTA ROM are fairly out of date. I know I can let the Play store update them to the current ones, however I wipe the device frequently and would prefer not to have to go through this each time. There are apps on the play store that let you move system apps and to user apps and vice versa which I have used before however its a faf each time they get updated as you need to make the system app a user app, let it automatically update or manually update it yourself with the .apk file and then move it back to system/app.
I'd prefer a flashable .zip I can install from recovery?

Well, I haven't tried flashing a Gapps zip but I agree that the apps are really outdated and would be too much to update each time you factory reset/wipe the device.
One way of doing this as you have mentioned: Remove the current Gapps. But I'm not sure it works for the play services. But even doing this may lead to the same error while flashing the zip.
Second way, as you said yourself, would be to make them as user apps and update them and make them system apps again. Which would take some time. But it seems the best method here.
The last way, specific to your case, is to wipe the device, update the apps and finally make a nandroid backup. Next time, instead of wiping, just restore the backup.
There can also be other ways to flash the zip in traditional manner but I think it would require a chance in the updater script of the package. (While you're at it, make sure you're flashing Kitkat 4.4 Gapps and not L Gapps.)
