Hey all,
couple of quick questions, would very much appreciate an answer.
I'm using MB525, green lens, CyanogenMod-7.1.0-jordan-Quarx, 2.6.32.9-gbc356f0 kernel and would very much like to update to 7.2.0, since it's almost been a year since I flashed the 7.1 and the defy is starting to lag a bit. The question is, do I just flash the zip from recovery and wipe it clean? I don't need to keep anything, except my contacts and I'm planning to use Titanium Backup for that (right?). Will I be able to roll back to the stock ROM? Because I've still got 1 year of warranty left on the device. Other than that, did any of you experience any serious failings of the 7.2.0? Thanks a million.
Install the froyo kernel builds for green lens. cm72 is very fast and stable, no major issues at all.
Download the zip and install through cwm, before that do full wipe. factory reset and wipe dalvik cache. For Contracts why don't you sync them with Google account and is pretty easy, otherwise you can just use export function to sdcard from settings of contacts application, and later you can import back.
Titanium backup is for application backup, not for contacts.
You can always come back to stick froyo for warranty purposes by fishing full sbf of your region. Never ever flash full sbf of higher revisions,2.3+ versions, so you keep downgradability.
Enjoy fishing!

Awesome, thanks! I figured I'll go with euroskanks ROM, "update-cm-7.2.0-RC1-jordan-KANG-signed.03222012-0221.zip", since it might have several fixes that the original RC does not (amirite?). Gonna head out for couple of hours and then go on with the whole ordeal, and report back in case any other noobs come wandering in. Thanks again.

woah, what a help you are! rrrrrrrr
HOLY **** it's flying. Didn't even have a chance to overclock it yet (1Gz as before), still at 800hz, however, it's so so snappy I could not be happier. I am not a very reliable source, though, since I only kept my contacts from the previous install, but that is just because I like it fresh, meaning, I didn't have a heart to uninstall the application I haven't been using for a while and now they're gone. Aaaaand got drunk in the meantime, which is how it's supposed to go down, I think! thanks all y'all, hugs n kisses
Benefits of referring to this Guide
One stop for someone coming from stock rom ( so from rooting till flashing all steps covered)
To the point at the same time detailed instructions
All custom ROMs (TW/MIUI/AOSP/CM/AOKP) covered
All relevant links posted for ready reference (like ROM list, Rooting guides etc)
AOSP/Cyanogenmod/AOKP based ROMs:
Step - 1
Read... Read and then Read... :
It’s always helpful to do a Google search a bit before you decide to flash a ROM. Read a little about Rooting, Custom ROMs like AOKP/CM10/CM10.1 and how they are different from your Samsung provided ROM. It will help you to be aware of potential risks attached and the benefits it brings to the table. It will also save a lot of time later, which you may spend wondering why a particular thing is not available or not in the same manner as it is on your stock ROM. And on the way you may pick up some handy tips such as CM10 would require your external sd card to be formatted to fat32, exfat won’t work etc.
So, PLEASE READ..
If you have read enough and decided to flash a custom ROM, then the tool in the below mentioned post will help you to root your Note II N-7100.
WARNING:
FLASHING A CUSTOM ROM MAY RAISE YOUR FLASH COUNTER AND WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY. IMPROPER FLASHING MAY POTENTIALLY BRICK YOUR DEVICE. SO PLEASE PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK. ME OR ANY OTHER DEVELOPER MENTIONED IN THIS POST WILL ASSUME NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE SAME.
Step - 2
Root your Note II:
Rooting gives you absolute authority (and shall I mention responsibility too ) over your device to deal with it the way you decide. You want to modify, flash a custom ROM or remove system app bloatware etc, you will need root rights. There are two safe methods to choose from for rooting your Note II:
1. Mskip’s Note II GSM toolkit
2. Chainfire's CF-Auto-Root
In case you have already rooted your Note II and have a working custom recovery, then please ignore Step -2.
Ensure you have a working custom recovery:
Please ensure you have a working custom recovery like Clock Work Mod (CWM) or Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP) recovery on your Note II before you proceed with flashing any ROM. Aforementioned Toolkit will give you option to root with CWM. So ensure you do that. Working recovery means that you have tested the recovery and it works fine. To check this, you may flash any small CWM flashable zip.
Step - 3
Back Up:
Its always advisable to do a nandroid backup of your existing ROM, just in case anything goes wrong while flashing new ROM or you wish to revert back for any reasons. This backup option, saves everything including ROM, settings, apps and data as it is at the time of backup.
For doing Nandroid backup,
1. Enter into recovery mode (3 key combo viz. Vol up + Home + Power or any app like ROM Toolbox lite )
2. Go into Backup and Restore (You can use vol up & down to scroll and power key to select)
3. Select Backup
Backup will take place and when it finishes, you will be back to options. Choose reboot now.
If you only wish to backup your applications, you may use paid apps like Titanium Backup Pro which can backup app + data (Please be aware restoring app + data may result in app fcs on some ROMs and developers generally advise restoring only apps).
Alternatively, you may use a simple free tool available on playstore called App2zip . It creates a flashable zip of all apps which you want to backup and places on your internal sd card. Its recommended to keep a copy of this zip on external sd as a safety measure. After you have installed your new ROM you can simply flash this zip from recovery and you get all your apps back. Please note, app data will not be backed up.
It is highly recommended to keep a copy of all backup files (Nandroid, Titanium or App2zip) on your PC.
Step - 4
Download compatible ROM:
Please ensure you have downloaded a ROM which is compatible with your device. Since your device is Note II N-7100 you should ensure you download a ROM which is compatible with Note II N-7100. Flashing ROM meant for any other variant or device may potentially brick the device.
Please refer here for available ROMs for N7100. ROMs and Kernel Repository - N7100
Once you have downloaded the ROM compare the MD5 sum of downloaded file with that of one given on download site. MD5 sum helps you identify any probable data loss issue which might have happened during the download process and as a result of which you might be at a risk of flashing a incomplete/inaccurate download. To mitigate this risk, simply check MD5 sum (This can be easily checked with the help of ES file explorer/ Root explorer apps) and compare it with MD5 given on download site. These 2 minutes can save 2 hours of re-flashing for you
Step - 5
Download JB gapps:
Please ensure you have latest JB gapps downloaded on your sdcard (internal or external) before you start flashing ROM. You can download it from goo.im. In case, anyone of you wishes to be able to sync Picasa web albums to Gallery/Quick pic, look for gapps-jb-picasa-XXXXXXXX-signed.zip from goo.im These will have to be flashed after you have flashed JB gapps first.
Step - 6
Do a clean install/Full wipe:
What is clean install/Full wipe? Clean install/Full wipe means installing with 3 wipes, viz.
Wipe Data/Factory Reset
Wipe Cache partition
Wipe Dalvik Cache (Under Advanced menu )
All of these options can be found under recovery mode. A clean install almost assures of a hassle free installation. It ensures there are no residues of previous ROM, which may conflict with current ROM & cause some painful disruption in operations. Thus, for smooth operation of new ROM full wipe is strongly recommended.
Step - 7
Flash the downloaded ROM zip:
Please read instructions of OP of the ROM you are flashing, at every flash. It’s possible that flashing instructions may change, so don’t assume that since you have flashed earlier version of same or similar ROM in a particular way it’s going to be same. To flash downloaded ROM -
Enter recovery mode ( I hope by now you know how to do that)
Select install zip from sdcard (it will be in the folder where you placed or downloaded it, so look for that folder)
And then select - Yes - Install xxxxxx.zip
After install has finished, you will be back to options. Do the following -
Wipe Cache
Wipe Dalvik cache
Time to flash, JB gapps...
Repeat the same procedure as flashing ROM but this time instead of ROM zip select the JB gapps zip which you had downloaded. In case, you need Picasa sync flash that zip after you have flashed JB gapps. Do the following -
Wipe Cache
Wipe Dalvik cache
Fix permissions
Please do not forget to flash gapps or else you will not find Play Store, when you boot up your ROM.
REBOOT... and you are good to enjoy CM10/AOKP based ROM on your Note II :good:
Please note S-Note or other Samsung apps won’t work on Cyanogenmod/AOKP or for that matter any other ROM which is not TouchWiz based.
There are enough and able replacement apps available on play store, please feel free to use them. If you find some apps really good, please pm me so that I can share it with other users as well.
Samsung/ Touchwiz (TW) based ROMs:
If you don’t want to miss Samsung proprietary features then you may consider rooting your phone and using a Samsung based custom ROM with it.
All steps except the one's related with gapps remain the same. You do not need to flash gapps separately on Samsung/Touchwiz based ROMs.. In a nutshell, DO NOT DOWNLOAD & FLASH GAPPS IF YOU ARE FLASHING A SAMSUNG/TOUCHWIZ BASED ROM
If you follow these instructions completely, it is very unlikely that you face any difficulties.. You should be comfortably enjoying a custom ROM on your Note II
If you have got any suggestions, please feel free to post it in the thread.

You probably want to indicate that on CM10 ROMS your external SD needs to be in format fat32 before flashing or else SD card can be corrupted.

Good guide compilation. Think you need to give a small warning about the counter increment and reset. Also, warn abt the counter being reset on each boot on custom recovery....just to avoid future blames coz that is the only major drawback in the current scenario.

I'm sorry for having to post here, I'm a new XDA member and I've just started using my tablet and found out I can't post in the dev section. I'm not sure how else to get help and a previous boyfriend told me the xda-developers community was a great place so I thought I would try here.
I have the Nexus 7 (2013 edition) and I used WUG's method of rooting - everything went perfectly, but now I'm getting a notification that there is an update (an OTA update - I think that's what they are called?) and it doesn't apply. I'm not sure if I should have, but I did the bootloader unlock and installed a new recovery (TWRP - I think that's how it's spelled?. sorry again)...
Anyway.... At this point my tablet is working great, but I constantly see this notification for an update and I'm not sure what to do.. It says "touch to install" and I've done that but it just boots into my new recovery. If anybody has access to WUG in the dev forum, could you please ask him what I should do?
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do you have the WiFi only version or the LTE version? Also, under your settings -> about phone, what build number are you currently on? Since you have rooted and installed a custom recovery, OTA updates will not install correctly. You have a couple of options in this regards, and I or someone will go over them once we figure out what version you are running.

All your data will be preserved. Only Wipe the Cache/Dalvik Cache, not the Data. Before you install go to Wipe -> Advance -> Check only Cache and Dalvik Cache.
Typically when an update comes out, someone will post a flashable update within a couple of hours so we can install them as well. Hope it helps.
Edit: As always before flashing anything, make a backup, by rebooting into recovery and selecting Backup (i check all the boxes).

I believe so, Cyanogenmod usually merges the updates pretty quickly into the code and you won't get any update notifications from Google directly any more. There are only nightly releases so far for this device if you feel like going that route.

That's completely up to you and what you prefer... I like the stock android experience so far, but there are many options out there for custom ROMs besides CM. Take a look here and here and figure out if a ROM in there has something you want... the great thing about this is if you don't like it, flash something else until you find exactly what you like... that's how I plan to do it, once the ROMs get more stable with the 4.3 updates.

Hi guys, first of all let me share al my specs in order to place my question properly:
PHONE MODEL: Galaxy S4 SGH-I337M (the original stock kernel was: Build Date: 30.05.2013 -> Region: TCE (Mexico) PDA: I337MUMUAMDL Changelist: 518267 Android: 4.2.2)
Actual Rom: CyanogenMod -version: 10.2 10.2-20130923-nightly -jftlecan
Compilation number: cm_jfltecan-userdebug 4.3 JLS36G eng.jenkins.20130923.022829 test-keys
Recovery Mode: CWM via Rom Manager Pro app
So saying that I will say this: I came from stock to CM wiping Factory Reset and data/cache only and I used Odin for rootint the device....no problems at all, runs like a charm...
MY ISSUE #1: A couple of auto-updates ago (via Rom Manager), I start to notice that the radio bars (telephony signal, mobile internet signal bars) were from 1 to 2 bars in places I always get full bars (I live on a 7th floor with excelent signal at Mexico City). I searched on the forums (XDA developers and here) and it seems that ROOTED DEVICES SHOW THE REAL SIGNAL PROVIDED BY THE CAREER---->can someone confirm this? Is my phone showing the real signal strenght?, eventhough, keep reading to see that low signal bars are only the beginning...
So as i said, I didnt worry pretty much, because if the bars are little low, but i have a good quality service, who cares? but the REAL PROBLEM appears when another update came and when Im trying to use my mobile internet (4g or 3G, doesnt matter) the signal cuts exactly at the moment of loading a page or any info....it as happened with almost all apps (specially Facebook, Waze and Google Maps)
It happens as follows:
1.- Open any app, like Dolphin browser or Firefox
2.- Page starts to load info (LTE showing download and upload state)
3.- LTE-3G or whatever, shuts down (I see only the telephony signal bars and there is no internet signal)
4.- Wait few seconds, LTE-3G whatever is back...have to try again and agin until LTE remains steady (sometimes it wont until I reboot)
ISUE #2- DURING CALLS:
- Sometimes people cant hear me, but I can hear them...restart the phone and the issue fixes it self...buts is very annoying to restart my phone every single time somebody calls me and they cant hear me
I dont know what to do guys? Shall I wait until final CM10.2 comes to light? Somebody has this bug also? Is this bug part of CM? or there is another app making this rare behaivour...(do you recommend me another ROM for this model of GS4??)
EDIT: I tried to flash the original modem.bin (via ODIN) which is used by my carreer (TELCEL, son of Slim AKA "The richest man on Babylon :silly: is the company´s name). So until now, I can tell that in my first attempts of opening pages or facebook, the randomly LTE turning off-on continues...I will keep testing with this "orginal" flashed modem....

It's defiinitely a modem issue. You can flash new modems and try. (backup efs before doing so, actually if you dont already have one - do it before now and save yourself some grief)
If that's not fixing the issues...
I'd backup what you need and start fresh. It would be the easiest way to resolve all your issues. Maybe even try a different kernel set for your region and phone.
Kies has a useful firmware recovery option that sets you back to stock.
The Kies will use your model number and serial to get you your stock firmware and reset you back. Id wipe all data under settings then do it. After its done, do another factory reset in recovery.

Thanks for that advice, i guess Im going to do all that if a new kernel doesnt fix the issue (I havent found any kernel for my region which supports Android 4.3, only 4.2.2, and someone told me is not correct to install such a kernel). Good day to you!

So after done all the "back to stock" steps, I still get this questions:
1.- Would I still be ROOT but with stock firmware (Touchwiz) and cool features originally made for Samsung GS4? (such as air gestures, etc etc)
2.- If im "unrooted" by the steps described in your link, can I upgrade to 4.3???
Thanks you are so kind!
Check out GoldenEye ROM or MDOB ROM in the development forum. They are extremely stable, super fast, tw and excellent battery life. CM is awesome, but is seriously way to flawed for our S4's right now to use for day to day life.

Man, I decided to return to full stock rom...LTE in perfect shape now...dont know what happened...i flashed with odin the exact version indicated in forums for making only the root without the custom rom or recovery...even that soft rooting is making my modem going crazy...i prefer stay this way until someone releases a decent full version for a GS4 SGH-I337m thanks guys
Did you try one of iB4STiD's ROMs? They work perfectly. CM is just way to full of bugs.

Well I just went back to original stock firm ware via Kies, and now the radio signal issues are gone!! CM 10.2 didn't work well for me as the stock rom is now working in my phone. Something tells me that some times it's better to just rooting (for enjoying cool apps as Greenify) and not installing custom Roms (because all this kernel carnival is just to much, and appart of all we have to install radio firmware? Just no!)

I had the older version of pacman and now trying to flash the new one. I downloaded pac_jfltetmo-nightly-20131018.zip and gapps-jb-20130813-signed.zip. I reboot to recover, restore my phone, flash the ROM then Gapps. I reboot my phone and when i get to the welcome page to setup my phone i click one start and instantly a message pops up saying, "Unfortunately, Setup Wizard has stopped. Blame Tyler." I tried a dozen times and the same thing. Can anyone help please.

Same.
Same.
:crying:
Same.
Edit. I tried flashing the ROM by itself then booting the device. Then reboot into recovery and flash the gapps. It worked for me and I have seen others say it is hit or miss. It is worth a try though.

Did you try a clean install?
-wipe data/factory reset
-flash ROM
-flash gapps
-restart
no "restore"
If you say you had an "Older" version, does this mean you were on PAC23 (with android version 4.2.2)?
If you are on a pre-android 4.3 version of PAC, you need to do a full wipe. If you are already on a 4.3 version of PAC and you have "blame tyler" issues, try factory reset, if the problem persists, try a different nightly
Just a little curious...is the Blame Tyler error a specific error or set of errors, or does Tyler get blamed for everything?
Also, can we get Tyler's xda username, so he can get the blame he deserves

try redownloading the rom zip! and check its md5 code before flashing!!

if it doesnt work then even try fix permissions option !

'Blame Tyler' error is just a generic message displayed when some component crashes/throws an unhandled exception, etc. It's not related to a bad ROM d/l or MD5 code. Telling people to do a full wipe b/c of an undiagnosed error condition doesn't help much. There are far too many little brokens with this ROM that need to be addressed and given more developer support, if this ROM is get more adoption.
Since RC1, nightlies have been dropping for 2 months now - no log of what's fixed or added, unless you are a dev who can wade thru the build change logs and understand what that means. It's ridiculous that we've gone this long since RC1 with a new stable release and documented fixes. Maybe this info is buried somewhere, but it's not in the Spring GS4 forum and the Pac-Man website forum is dead.
These errors are not specific to any one nightly and have been going on for months.
the tyler message is just a replacement of the force close messages. It is meant as a joke as he is one of our devs and we all take turns being blamed for breaking stuff.
If your coming from the old stable and flashing the newest nightile...comming from 4.2.2. to 4.3.1 then a full wipe is required due to the different databases and newer code that isnt compatable with the old version. This should fix your issues.
Also please dont post tylers username as its not nice to go and troll him...
I flashed the rom successfully after a full wipe this weekend. Amazeballs. I blame Tyler for making all my friends jealous of my phone.
I want to keep up with nightlies. The only thing not working for me is the wifi tether. If I have the US snapdragon quad-core variant do I want the pac-jfltetmo.zip?

i have flashed your pac man rom to my galaxy sl everything went right but its keyborad was not working then i manually flashed another JB keyboard in recovery mode... then it worked ... and i flashed blackgapps(JB 4.2.2) from ENHDROIX developers and it is working quite well...
the only problem i had was keyboard stuff..
so devs should fix that issue...
GUYS THIS IS VERY STRANGE.. The nav bar at the bottom overlaps half of the dock of next launcher which makes the dock completely unusable and ugly.. the same problem persist in 50% of the other apps notably go sms, quick pic, go launchers and many others.. I have tried the milestone releases and a few latest nightlies but its still not fixed..
Its hard to believe there are many discussions of issues about pac rom going on but I didn't find this preety obvious and significant one anywhere..
I have waited like 3 months since I started with pac, updated about 5 nightlies along the way hoping it will be fixed but no luck everytime..
This one is serious.. It has forced me not to use some of my fav apps and use pie navigation at times..
No problem with all the minor bugs but this one is frustrating..
ANY IDEA GUYS??
PS. pac ver 4.3.1 on sg tab p3100 and sg3

Do you know how to enable navigation bar? I saw all the settings in PAC settings>navigation bar but found no option to enable it.
