Having crappy battery life? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My battery wasn't the best on stock but it was OK, I easily made it through the day. I flashed CM10 with Franco kernel and here are my results below. Is this normal?

was that from full? because that is NOT right
i can get usually about 50-60 minutes of screen time for every 30% so thats about 3 hrs SOT for a full charge... and i still think thats low
i use AOKP, franco and interactive/deadline, -25mv all around

Yes, full charged over night. I thoughts it wasn't right.

U have some mad wake lock or a rogue app. What's consuming most of the batt?

Need more info like he said.......... But Read the Sticky about battery and look at some of the custom roms. They get great battery life.
And Yes, you may be the only one..............
I get horrible battery life. Running the Stock KA6 Froyo build. No custom roms. I think I would like the phone more if it got better battey life. I get 12 hrs max. No heavy usage on phone either. NO GPS OR WIFI on either.
This is probably the most asked question I see here. I recommend the search feature
If you're on a stock or leaked ROM, your battery is going to suck. Root, download Titanium Backup and start by freezing both DRM Processes and Media Hub for starters.
Next, spend the $2 and download an app called "SystemPanel". Run if for 24 hours. It will tell you what is draining your battery. The hardware is perfectly capable of good battery life. The more bloatware (Samsung and T-Mobile Apps) and crap apps you remove from your system, the better. Also, 3G, especially in area's with poor reception, will eat your battery life. In my experience, EDGE + WiFi is MUCH more friendly than 3G with no wifi. WiFi Calling is a battery killer as well. Getting great life is really quite easy once you know what you're doing, and the best way to know what you're doing is to read up.

Just think how much more you'd love the phone if it not only got better battery life, but also preformed like you would expect a 1GHz cpu to perform! Try a new kernel and let the addiction begin!
Sent from my rough sketch of a Vibrant on a brick I like to pretend is running Trigger 2.7 on OverStock 1.3...
I get around 40 hours with light use. Running the latest bionix rom. wifi and bluetooth enabled the whole time, approx 90 minutes with the screen on. You should be able to get close to that.
Quick question: I run system panel. It never show media hub in top apps, why should I freeze it then?
P.s. I don't use media hub...am judge curious.

No **** that CM7 has bad battery life, it doesn't have optimizations. And 5% is exaggerating it, I lose 2% an hour with 3G on. I'd say that's pretty good.
Yes, it does die VERY quickly when you use it, but I expected that, that's why I use my iPod for heavy usage.
Also, the 1% thing, what kind of weed are you smoking? That seems like some REALLY good stuff.
Okay sorry about that lie. Truthfully moderate usage of 8 hours I lost about 20% I left a screenshot and from 100% I lost that in about 20 min no screenshot.

It's a general saying;
Light means it wasn't used that much but still a bit
Moderate, you check your phone once in a while, texting phone calls etc.
Heavy is when your phones like on 24/7(not literally, but i'm guessing you know what i mean)

The battery meter doesn't seem to be very linear. You are best off to run it dead and see how many hours your phone lasts. I can make it all day with 75% left, but it will be down to 40% in the morning.

Miui with tiamat kernel

I'm currently running miui 1.8.12 with tiamat kernel 4.0.6 and getting bad battery life. I flashed tiamat because I red it improved battery life. I have an extended battery and only getting 7 hours with light usage. I have tried several of those battery tips but not much improvement any ideas. Also tired installing setcpu from here but it won't install.

Most of us are using the 3.3.7 kernel. MUCH better than the 4.06
I will try and give that one a try then. My battery already down to 70% and its been running for only 2 hours. I figured with an extended battery I should be getting better time then what I am.
At the end of this, I wrote really good technique for conditioning your battery. It helps!

I use overclock widget and have preferred that over setcpu from day 1. I honestly can use my phone a full day of txting calling emailing and some streaming music. I also use juice defender and have it set to only use internet on specific apps. Although I do have it on wifi all day at work and home.
With this said I can last a full day on my regular battery no problems. I also have the 3500 extended and although I can do 30 hrs on it, it does seem to suck battery life faster than expected but my stock battery does not tails off as fast IMO...
stock - 18 - 20 hrs
extended - 24 - 32 hrs

You don't HAVE to switch, but a lot of us get better performance out of the custom kernels

@Pryltokig
Do you use the Kernel which comes with NeatLite or did you changed it?
On a full charge, I got what I also usually got in Gingerbread, meaning a little over two days. More specific:
2days3hours
3h55' screen time
29' talk time.
wifi or 3G at all times.
ROM: Omega v15 based on stock 4.0.3 XWLPG, no mods to cpu or gpu. Stock kernel, rooted.
Because I read at night time, I use a screen filter and keep the light at 30-40% from the minimum value which gives longer screen on times.
Otherwise, I would get 2h of screen on time.
Happy with my response?

How much screen time?
---------- Post added at 08:41 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:38 PM ----------
My best result is with Gingerbread! Yeah, with gingerbread! I tried many ICS roms and I never get the same result.
Anyways, I have XILA3 Stock GB ROM, with no modifications.
Total Time: 1d 3h
Screen Time: 6h 6m
Yesterday I managed almost 4hrs of screen time, almost 4 1/2h listened to music and 16 1/2 hours overall. I`m pretty impressed with that. I am using Resurrection Rom 2.6 and Siyah Kernel 3.3.3d. However, a little Undervolting and underclocking was involved.

Battery life absolute trash?

So my N7 arrived two days ago, and I immediately unlocked, rooted, and flashed some things. Currently running Codename Android with Trinity Kernel.
My battery is absolute crap now though. Its been two days so I thought the battery more but have settled by now. All auto sync off, brightness at lowest setting, apps sync every 4 hours, still bad! Does calibrating still work? I read somewhere that it was debunked and it didn't work. I would appreciate any help. I mean, my Maxx is getting better battery life.
I uploaded some screenshots of the battery after only 1 and a half hours.

Go to the motley kernel thread in Original Development. He provides a mirror link for the stock kernel
I loved Trinity and the TKT app but for some reason im getting much better battery life with motley kernel. I originally did some troubleshooting and fixed some apps that were causing wakelocks. My battery life got a little better but not by enough (could only get 3 or 4 hrs screen on) so i switched kernels.
If you feel like experimenting do this:
Nandroid
Wipe Cache + Dalvik
Wipe System
Factory Reset
Flash CM10 nightly (any rom of your choice)
Flash GApps
Flash motley kernel (i used the 484 GPU version)
Fix permissions
Reboot
I get awesome battery life now and performance is great.
Your title should be something like this: "After rooting and installing battery draining rom and kernel I get bad battery life on my N7"
Stock JB and kernel should yield decent batter life.
With the proper rom and kernel the Nexus 7 easily match or better the googles battery life claim.
FYI the latest Trinity kernel is a battery hog.

I wouldnt go as far as saying its a battery hog, but i ran the kernel at stock clocks and while performance was much better than stock i still had tons of drain that i now dont have with a different kernel.
Ran Trinity kernel at 1150mhz and had awful battery. Back on stock ROM and kernel and seems to have improved a lot.

I feel like the battery is pretty decent...
Get off those custom Roms and kernels until you understand how the device is meant to perform.
You appear to have 87% after 1.5 hours, that equals about 10 hours, how is that bad? I get about 8 hours if I am intensely playing with screens, apps and games, 2 days if I'm not doing much. Loses 2% at night with wifi off. No root.
trinity kernel and the pure aosp rom, at 1150mhz. id say not bad at all..
Trinity Kernel is a good kernel. I went overboard by saying it was a battery hog. I did have it overclocked up to 1500hz on-demand and it ate up battery faster then I would like. But this is with the newest one, a few of the older ones worked out better for me though.

Aokp on nexus 4

Okay guys quick question I installed AOKP on my Nexus 4 with Franco kernel a few days ago I suddenly noticed that my battery was terrible with moderate to lite use I only get 5 hours out of it screen on or off. Now today I reinstall CyanogenMod and I'm getting 24 plus hours use out of it with screen on time around 6 hours.
It seems to me that AOKP is a very heavy ROM and it drains battery fast also with aokp my nexus constantly heated up to 40c but with CyanogenMod it barely gets past 30c. Why is this?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Did you try aokp with their own kernel?
Skickat från min Nexus 4 via Tapatalk 2
i didnt try aokps own kernel, but since franco kernel being one of the best didnt do anything good im sure aokps kernel wouldn't do any better.

I've been on AOKP since I got my nexus ( after switching from stock) and I love it but I was never able to get more than 3 hrs SOT. After trying a few diff kernels such as matr1x and franco and finally changing some settings and greenify I'm finally able to get 4+, maybe almost 5. Also my phone did get very hot but I didn't really have anything to compare the heat or battery life to since that was the only rom i really tried. I have seen some comments saying AOKP isnt great on battery so I decided to finally try something else, but I don't want to give up all the customization roms.
I decided to try Xylon now, with franco kernel. Flashed it yesterday so after a few cycles I'll see if its any better and report back.
But on AOKP I did usually get like 16 hrs with good use on it, maybe 3-4hrs sot. So nothing as terrible as you said..
im on whitehawkx's aokp with semaphore and it is fantastic. i dont think theres much different between his version and the official version though. and aokp isnt that heavy of a rom anymore, they really optimized the features.

Theres a thread in general about getting 6hrs SOT, check that out.. and then there was some stuff in the great battery impression thread.
I'm not sure which of these changes made the biggest difference but basically in maps make sure location reporting/updating is turned off, that definitely makes a difference. I also had google now off but it was still only 3hrs with it off so I dont know how much of a difference that makes.
If you try a new kernel like franco/matrix, make sure you give it a few days to settle in. I under clocked a little and uv'd by 100mv but I've read that those things don't make a big impact on battery life, just help with heat and stuff. I also set max core to 2, i think that helps and honestly I didn't notice any difference in performance and I don't think it cripples your phone unless you want to play intense games.
The 2 newer things I did which I think really made a difference were getting greenify and hibernating facebook and family feud, which were always running in the background. So definitely try that and hibernate whatever you don't need running all the time. The other thing I did was turn off "backup my data to googles servers" since I use titanium backup anyways. I think these made a big difference. I also turned off screen touch sounds and lock/unlock sounds.
So try all that and see how it goes. I'm mostly on wifi and I do use gps occasionally, as well as heavy texting, whatsapp, and fb messenger and a lot of words for friends. so I guess 4hrs isnt bad, with a good 12-18 hrs standby.
Hope this helps!

I got much better standby time than that but yeah, mostly 3hrs and we do care, thats why we're trying to find solutions/improve. What rom/kernel do you use?
Thx vikrom that was helpful i will check that out.
As of last week i was using aokp with franco kernel ms1 and i was getting around 3 hours sot and 9 hours stand by time.
now im using CM with franco kernel ms1 and im getting almost 7 hours sot and almost 24 hours stand by time.

You're welcome. Holy crap wow thats a huge difference. Any other changes you made because thats kidna ridiculous lol. I might have to finally go to CM if it really changes that much. almost 7 hrs sot??
Nope nothing special just CM, franco Kernel, a few options turned off and setcpu which is under volted a bit. I will upload a screen shot soon. With heavy use i get around 4+ hours sot and still close to 20hours stand by time. With light use like texting a bit of web browsing and stuff like that yes you can expect 5+ to 7 hours sot and stand by time of around 24 hours.

That sounds good to me. On AOKP with Franco was able to get about 18hrs standby and about 4hrs SOT with heavy use. I think words with friends probably affects it a bit. I guess I never use it lightly but Ive never gotten 5hrs SOT.. although i've gotten standby to 24 with my 3+ sot hrs..
