I'm with everybody that's replied so far--I've bought both an S4 & HTC One out of curiosity and wound up giving them away to my pre-teen nephews. You'd be far better off sorting out your current situation than moving to either candidate
Just my two cents chum and no worries; I'm too far over the hill for any of that bias/fanboyism business, haha. Good luck!

Advice Please: Changing Carrier / Phone

I am currently changing my family over to T-Mobile and had ordered an HTC One for both my wife and I and we received them yesterday. I activated my wife's phone as well as my daughter's phone but I have not done my phone yet. Honestly, I have said for awhile that I want a Nexus Phone, and since the phone is almost half the cost of the HTC One it helps saving money to be able to get a Nexus 5 when it comes out.
Now here are my questions and hoping you all could help guide me: With Google I/O starting tomorrow should I get the phone now or wait to see what is announced at Google I/O (Though it sounds like the Nexus 5 won't be announced until October / November)? I ordered these phones via phone so can I return this HTC to the T-Mobile store? And since I want to return this and I they already requested my phone number to be transferred should I get the Nexus 4 from T-Mobile or order from Google Play (I have NO IDEA why the same phone is $130 more on T-Mobile but I will look that one up).
Any advice would be very helpful! Thanks!

While there won't be any new/major hardware revisions, it never hurts to wait, especially if it's just a day more.
I'm personally curious if tomorrow is when we'll see the fabled white Nexus 4.

The reason why it's cheaper on the Play store because Google sells them at a loss. More precisely they don't make any profit off the phones at such a low price tag. That's why T-Mobile and perhaps some other retailers will sell them for a higher price to make a few bucks off of it.
Since all Nexus 4 are the same you might as well get one from the Play Store. If anything goes wrong, Google can get you a replacement. It's also much cheaper. It comes unlocked so feel free to use it on any GSM carrier.
I think you should wait and see what happens tomorrow at the I/O conference. It seems though a new Nexus smartphone won't be released until the very end of the year.

Interesting... So they aren't making money selling the nexus 4? Why ate they doing it then? Is it just to win over competition?

Lol. They don't need the money. I'm not really sure why they do it. When the new Nexus 7 tablet comes out this summer they're gonna lose $5-$10 for each device sold.
Another interesting thing is that the Galaxy S4 costs about $237 to make. Buying it without a contract will cost you over $600-$700. Crazy, huh?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
They are trying to introduce more people to the play store and android experience, that's why the price is lower. Wait a day and see what happens. But if it comes down to your question about should you return HTC one for the nexus 4, I would. You'll have extra $200 to buy accessories or maybe donate some $$ to charity.

Wait until tomorrow just to see if there will be a storage bump. You can return to tmobile within 14days (30 in CA) as long as you are a new customer, for renewals tmobile no longer has a "cooling off" period so I'm not sure what the process on returns is. Buy from Google. The Samsung S4's BOM (cost of materials) is <$250 now the cost to research/market the phone I find hard to believe would come in at $500 (assuming a $750 unlocked selling price) and yet that is what they want you to believe...my point is Tmo sells the N4 for $130 more because they can and that is what people are used to paying.

So the first article has conjecture and rumor from "analysts". The last 2 are about the nexus 7, a different device, but also say that google is making very little money or selling at cost (which means they aren't losing money and is believable.)
None of the articles have anything to do with you contradicting yourself nor do they have any info from google concerning the cost of the device so...you still contradicted yourself and you still don't know how much money they are/aren't making.

Yep, "we" have known for awhile that these devices only have $200-$300 worth of parts in them and google is using their size to push down prices for devs. Unfortunately it isn't doing anything for the general price of phones, in the US at least, since most people are still on contracts
Google is an advertising company at heart, everything they do is geared towards getting people online 24/7. Hardware is a loss leader

should i trade?

I currently have the HTC One m7 on tmobile with a completely blown speaker on the top so both external sound and call sounds are ruined. I unlocked the boot loader and actually dropped it one time so there is a tiny bit of damage on the bezel, so i assume neither t mobile or htc will honor any kind of warranty. I put it up on craigslist and a guy is offering to trade me for a mint condition nexus 4 with a few cases. Should i do it?

Well, buying a speaker replacement is not that expensive. I will try to fix it myself first. If you sell it after fixing it you can ask for more than 450$+ for it. The nexus 4 in mint conditions would be valued for around 280$ in mint conditions for the 16gb version.
Edit: forgot your HTC isn't unlocked. Then selling prices go down considerably. After owning nexus phones for some time I completely forgot about sim locked devices.

Nexus 4 shattered screen, waiting for Nexus 5?

Hi,
In an annoying fashion my lovely Nexus 4 fell and the screen shattered, Touch won't respond,
Because fixing it will cost somewhere between 150-170$ should I wait for Nexus 5?
I have the option to have An iphone 4s untill then (not to thrilled about it).
What do you say?
(I'm completely bummed right now)
If it's gonna come out in 4-5 months I'd say its worth the wait. The 4S should be manageable till then. Or you could sell the 4S to fund a new nexus 4 screen

Repairing your phone will cost you $150 and selling it right after you fix it will at least fetch you $250+ , why dont you repair your phone see if you would want to use it or if you would prefer to use till nexus 5 comes out, in case you dont want to you to sell it. Seems like a win-win to me if you would repair your phone. I would have done that if i were in your shoes.

Kind of pricey in comparison for the same non-contract/unlocked state. Far as a Potential Nexus 5, the 4 if I recall came out nov/dec of last year no? If so I wouldn't expect a new Nexus phone any sooner than October unless they're going to sell something like a Nexus 4 and Nexus 6 (ie: "big phone" version) side by side.

Wasn't the Nexus 4 like 299 for base, and 349 for 16 gb so fairly reasonable but the HTC isn't astronomically is it? I know there is an aversion to contracts, but not sure when the Nexus 5 comes out depends on what you need now.

299 and 349 for completely unlocked, no contract, no carrier restriction (so as long as it's GSM).
I mean how are you going to get an HTC One *temporarily* if you're stuck on a 2 year contract with it?
Depends on each person's situation. I am paranoid and buy everything outright, but could be different with others.

Money wise, if he's been in love with the Nexus series, already has an iPhone 4s that can serve as a temporary device if he wants to wait a few months for the possibility of a new Nexus device. (If he had no smart phone at all, that'd be a different story).

Whoa, that's terrible! I'm so glad I live in the UK
But to answer, since the nexus 6 is probably coming out between this autumn and next spring, I would buy a moto G or another fairly good budget phone to tide you over until it comes out, then buy the nexus 6. I have a 4 as well, it's a great phone, shame to lose it.
Any chance you had the feature to track the phone on?
Sent from my SM-T320 using Tapatalk
N5 ofc
You have 2 wait a lot for N6
Glad you are okay, it could have been much worse. Even if you are able to track, it wont be worth it, because its not worth the risk to your safety trying to retrieve it and the authorities will most likely not have this high on their list of priorities.
I think your best bet is to get an invite to purchase the One Plus One. Its only $299 and it puts nearly all flagship devices tn shame. It's getting popular in the Dev and modding community.
http://oneplus.net/
If you are able to get invited, PLEASE send me one as I'll be looking for a new phone within the next year.

Please stop repeating baseless internet rumours as fact.

How much can I get for my N4?

I upgraded to the OPO near the end of October and my Nexus 4 16GB is just sitting around and not in use.
This is aimed more at UK users.
It is in excellent pristine condition (no scratches front or back as they have screen protectors) and I have included loads of accessories including cases and spare screen protectors.
I have advertised it on a local selling page for £115 and gather some interest. I am wondering if you guys think this is an acceptable price?
I have taken a peek on eBay and seen one going for £150 and the bid hasn't ended. But that is the only exception I can't find others.
Should I expect more for the phone? Or should I sell it at this price?
Cheers.

Just had a quick look and £120 seems the average. £150 is high and I don't think you'd get that.

I've had a look again myself and that's what I'm seeing too. I have a buyer lined up for tomorrow for £115.
Should I just go ahead and pull the trigger? I will miss the phone had some fond memories with it, but it doesn't have much use now.

Personally, I think you'll get nostalgic and regret selling it. Use it as a test mule for ROMs for your OnePlus One, since most ROMs available for for both. And it never hurts to have a back-up phone. Or something smaller when you don't want so large a phone (is that a OnePlus One in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?).
Sell it if you need the cash, I guess, but unless you're short on January's rent, my advice is to hang on to your Nexus 4.
I've kept so many handsets, just in case, then regretted it later when they never got touched, but it's your call mate. If you have a buyer lined up, I'd got go for it.
