Hi all,
Is there a way to adjust the amount of the internal flash memory WM5 allocates between storage and program space?
I've installed all my extra apps in the unlocked extended ROM, and I'd like to reallocate the 29MB of 'Program' space I've freed up to 'Storage' space (as shown by Settings > System > Memory > Main) if possible.
I'd like to do this because there have been times when copying a file to the PDA fails because of 'no space left' in 'Storage', while there are still around 25MB+ of free space unused by the 'Program' part.
And this is something I'd like to do irrespective of the size of microsd I'll be getting.
thanks a lot
PS. Personally, I think it's silly that WM5 still allocates internal flash this way, since it's now able to run programs directly off the NAND flash ...
my mistake
OK,
I just found out about the memory FAQs down the bottom of this page:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_FAQs
and reading them cleared up my questions: basically I mistook 'Program' part of the memory as being part of the NAND flash, when it's actually part of the RAM.
Only the 'Storage' part belongs to the flash.
So now I know my question didn't actually make sense, and can be ignored
cheers

I was just reading about the specs of Galaxy 3 on http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i5801_galaxy_apollo-3432.php
There was a line about memory which says:
Internal 512MB ROM, 256MB RAM
Now, in this, I understood 256 MB RAM which is the amount of memory used for running apps
But I am confused regarding 512MB ROM....what is this and what it is used for in user's context?
Think of it as internal memory-> For the ROM/FW and apps on phone (installation space)
So, I understood 256 MB RAM which is the amount of memory used for running apps
512 MB ROM is the memory used for installing apps and firmware (in other words: operating system)...correct?
Thanks for the confirmation..
Hi Guys,
I have a Defy Plus with DFP-231 Asian Retail version ROM. I had some memory cleaning widget which shows that my applications could use a total of 350 MB memory.....
I thought that the D+ came with 2 GB internal memory so I could load upto ~2GB of games(apps) running. ...:crying:
With all this confusion...
My Question is : What is the Difference between The RAM and ROM and Why is my widget showing only 350 MB usable for apps???
Kindly correct me If I'm wrong in my assumptions.
Cheers,
Vic
do not confuse ram with rom. rom is the storage which stores installed apps and system files, its like the hdd in a pc, and it keeps its content when powered down.
ram is a temporary storage from where apps run, and it clears after a power-down. (memory in a pc)
the defy has 2gb built-in storage (rom), from which 1.2 is usable for apps, and it has 512MB ram (around 470-480 usable).
you probably have a lot of apps installed, thats why the widget shows only 350mb remaining.
Thank you for clearing this

Hi,
Thank you very much for clearing this.. So does that mean when I install apps to my phone instead of SD card they get installed in RAM and not ROM????
Cheers,
Vic

umm, no. they get installed in rOm, thats the permanent storage, ram is temporary. although there are solutions to install apps to sdcard. (app2sd, data2sd)

Usable for Apps means memory that can be used to store apps permanently.. It is the available ROM on your device. As stated before the 2GB memory is shared by OS & Apps.
RAM (512 MB on defy+) is temporary and is cleared on reboot and other activities.
Which script do you prefer for Increasing Internal Memory
1) Mounts2SD
2) INT2EXT
3) S2E
4) Something else

I use Link2sd !
To increase ram or in technical words to convert read only memory to random access memory.
Please note: THIS WILL NOT INCREASE THE RAM IN SETTINGS. IT WILL ONLY CACHE YUOR RUNNING APPS TO SDCARD SO THAT U GET MORE FREE MEMORY AVAILABLE.
Required
Brain
Root
Supported kernel
How to use.
Install app
Select sdcard in option SELECTDIR.
Increase swap size to the size of ram you want to increase.(the more the swap size the more the time taken to create it)
Check swap active.
How does it work
It caches all running apps in swap file thus freeing the memory.
