Return to stock without PC? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a hardware problem on my rooted N7 and my PC won't recognize it. I have tried multiple PC's and multiple cables and it worked fine in the past so I have the correct drivers installed. I called Google (purchased from Playstore) and they said they can only troubleshoot and repair it if it is stock and unrooted.
Any way to return to stock without a PC?

Need a few more specifics. Are you running a custom ROM or are you just rooted on a stock ROM? Have you tried to use a toolkit to restore? I have seen some be able to connect with ADB but not in the OS. Also, check your device manager when you connect it. You may have ADB drivers instead of the actual drivers that you need. Try unintelligible all drivers related to your device.

[Q]Computer won't recognize phone?

When I plug my wife's phone into my computer it doesn't recognize it as a media device. It does recognize it as an adb device though so I was able to unlock the bootloader and root it. She wants me transfer music and can't, any ideas? Also when I plug in my nexus 4 it appears as a media device.

I have a similar problem with my wife's N4. Hers does not recognize as a MTP device nor as an ADB device. In device manager it shows it, but adb devices never lists it and it never shows up in Computer when I disable USB debugging. My N4 has no problems with either. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers and can't figure it out!
Weird thing though, it detects it in fastboot mode.
I just got off the phone with Google Play Devices support and explained the issue. They are assisting in getting an exchange.

I had this same problem, and it was the lack of drivers. Uninstall in device manager what you have, restart, then install the 4.2 Google SDK drivers. This works in Windows 8 without any extra procedures. I have the SDK installed, and directed the 'have disk' driver search to the SDK directory/extras/google. There were three adb drivers, and I installed them all. I really don't know what I'm doing, but that solved the problem.

Dude it's not the phone lol. It's the computer. When I plug my phone into my dad's computer it detects it fine. It happened on mine because I installed those adb drivers

What worked for me was uninstalling my old Motorola drivers and then using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1995688 to uninstall the SDK drivers for the Nexus 4 that I had originally installed when I got the phone. Then I installed the drivers provided with the Nexus 4 Toolkit and everything works great. MTP, ADB, Fastboot, and the phone is recognized within CWM/TWRP.

have kind of a similar problem, but a bit different
my computer was able to detect the phone in mtp, adb and fastboot mode, installed the drivers, unlocked bootloader, and everything was fine
this morning the computer no longer able to detect the phone, but it still charges when i plug in the usb cable to the computer; cant transfer files, adb and fastboot list no devices, even device manager doesnt show the phone being plugged in
UPDATE: just tried on another computer, nothing... not even asking for drivers, and the phone doesnt even show it is connected in MTP mode like before... im screwed
I have a similar problem too..
My Nexus 4 works fine when I plug it into the computer, it shows the device just fine. But, when I plug my brother's Nexus 4 into my computer, it does not recognize it, it installed the drivers but I can't see the device in My Computer. In device manager, it shows up. With my brother's phone, I can mount it as Camera (PTP) and I can go into it, but it cannot detect it as a Media device (MTP)

Perhaps, in device manager, select the adb driver, right click to update, direct the update to have disk....SDK Google extras location?

Think I tried that before and windows said the drivers are already up to date

In my case anyway, its definitely not the computer. I have two identical, brand new Nexus 4 16GB phones. One is recognized with the appropriate drivers on my computer and the other is as well, however the second one does not show in My Computer nor get listed with ADB devices - unlike the first. The only difference between the two scenarios is the physical phone that is plugged into the computer.
Same with me, my phone works fine but when I plug my wife's in.. Nothing.

I haven't been able to fix it by the suggested methods.. When it's on the other mode for camera pics it works fine and in device manager I get under " portable device" nexus 4 showing up.. But when I switch it to MTP all I get is android adb interface in device manager and no nexus 4

Same for me. I did get it to read my wife's phone though by using the nexus 4 toolkit to uninstall then reinstall the drivers. Funny thing, now it reads her phone and not mine. D'oh!

Accidentally wiped everything. No adb during recovery or bootloader.

I'm on TWRP 2.3.3.0., and my computer is W8 Pro. I've searched but most people seem to be able to get adb working during the bootloader at least, but not for me. I've tried sideloading a zip through the command prompt (and picking the adb sideload option in TWRP) but it tells me that adb is not recognized. I've tried using the Nexus Root Toolkit to restore a backup I have on my computer, but, yeah, no adb. I was wondering if disabling driver signature enforcement was temporary, so I went through the menus and disabled it again on my computer. I've used the cable/port that I rooted it with but I've also used different cables and ports as well. Why isn't this working? Am I bricked?
Have you tried jromflasher for nexus 7? With that tool you can wipe your system, upload ROM, temporary load custom recovery, and flash the ROM.

Error 103. I think my device needs to be booted into an actual ROM.
I thought that maybe the drivers from plugging my phone in were interfering, so I used the Nexus Root Toolkit again, and went through the driver installation for a second time, deleting all the old ADB drivers and such. Well, when I tried to install the RAW drivers, I get "Windows was unable to install your unknown device," and basically it could not find the driver software and to check the company website and so on. Did I just dig myself into a deeper hole? Gah! I wish I could remember which wipe option deleted sdcard so I know to never do it again.
OP is using Win8 - might want to try to do it with a PC or laptop running Win7 or Vista OS and start fresh by loading the drivers and/or use Jromflasher - borrow a friend/neighbor's PC to see if it can be jump started, assumed that s/he cannot get it to boot into Fastboot and/or Recovery as the file systems are likely corrupted. (I have an old/aging laptop running Windows XP SP3 that's set aside for fixing often the impossible)
Otherwise, it might be time for an RMA to get it repaired by Google/Asus and/or exchange - it could cost $$ if they determined that the warranty has been "compromised" ...
You know you won't get adb while in bootloader? You need fastboot.

Thanks. I'll try this later tonight. Would they RMA in this scenario, even though it is my fault? Assuming I can't get it working.
I don't understanding why you would RMA? You can get into twrp right? So you can still flash ROMs and whatnot. Just need to get adb installed on cpu
You can also try "disable driver signature check" on advanced reboot on windows 8.

Well....use fastboot then.
You should have done some reading before you started flashing ROM's. You dont seem to even know what fastboot is.
Have you tried downloading the android sdk from Google and installing their usb driver?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
Adb works in recovery and in Android OS, only fastboot works in the bootloader. Installing Windows 8 messed it up for me, but I simply grabbed the Nexus 7 driver from ASUS'S website. I suggest you read and learn how to use fastboot.

Reinstall 4.2.2 fresh on mac

How do I do a fresh install of 4.2.2 on a Mac or on the device itself?
I have the factory image on my Mac from google. What's next?
I believe you install the android SDK and connect your phone to it using USB. Run a command. I'm assuming you are stock.

Any 'easy' way to install a clean 4.2.2 via Mac? Using SDK or anything? I have done it on PC but my PC is down and cant seem to find the right way of doing it on Mac. Any help would be great, have searched but nothing is working for me so far.

Phone is not recognized by PC

I'm running stock deodexed ROM and stock kernel 4.2.2. My phone is not recognized by my laptop and my desktop while my girlfriend's phone (completely stock, not rooted) is recognized. Anyone has experience with this issue, please help
Are you missing any driversss...?

What do you want to accomplish? Do you want to transfer file through mtp mode, or do you want to root it using fastboot? Depending on your goal, you need different drivers.

Flashed wrong stock recovery

Bonehead move I know. Now I need some help to fix. I flashed a stock 5.0 ROM and everything was working fine. Got the 5.0.1 prompt so I flashed a stock recovery (4.4.4 hence my problem). Of course the update wouldn't flash. Now to complicate things all of a sudden my PC won't detect my Nexus 4. It detects my wife's Nexus 4 fine so I'm thinking not a cable or driver problem. Ive tried multiple cables and reinstalled drivers with no luck. So now I need to root and or install custom recovery without a PC. Any ideas?

You're going to need to get your pc to recognize your device. When booted into the bootloader and your device connected to the pc look in device manager. What does it show?

It doesn't show anything. Its as if it isn't connected at all. I've tried from the bootloader and recovery screens and also rebooted both phone and pc. Still shows nothing in device manager. Phone shows charging but no mtp notification or anything that it is connected. As soon as I plug our other nexus 4 in the pc recognizes it immediately.

I would try deleting your usb drivers on the pc, rebooting and then trying your device again. Flashing the 4.4.4 recovery should not have done anything to mess up your device

OK I will try that again and post results. Another possible problem I noticed is in root explorer I have a directory of emulated/0 I don't remember having before.

To root your device use towelroot from your device. Although I don't know what you're going to do with root. Also, can you get the device detected by your pc when you're booted into recovery or the device?

Towelroot wouldn't work. Says device isn't supported. Maybe it will get updated to work on lollipop. If I could obtain root I can flash custom recovery and start with a fresh install. Just have to find a way to do it with an app
