S4 i9500 5Ghz Wifi: Wont see SSID if channel >48 - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Folks,
i have Apple Extreme Base Stations (802.11n - one generation before the latest 802.11ac model).
i'm currently running 2.4 and 5ghz networks. the 5Ghz when set as auto uses channel 149 and up.
the 2.4Ghz is on channel 9 - no problems.
iPhone 5 sees the 5Ghz network if its on channel 149 or any channel >48
S4 wont see it- Wifi Analyser configured to scan all channels does not see it as well.
if i reconfigure the AEBS to use channel 36 or below 149 - the S4 sees the 5Ghz SSID.
I have a i9500 Octa Core international phone. my iPhone 5 is a GSM EMEA phone.
Can anyone explain this? how come iPhone 5 can use channels >48 while the S4 does not.
Per apple its better to use the higher channels to get better performance and they also transmit more power signal than the lower channels.
Thanks
tal

Dont count on this 110% but i believe it is an Apple issue.
I had a similar problem with a new 2012 Macbook Air, in which it was unable to connect to network channels above about 15 i think, router was a Non-Apple router.
Not your exact problem but will hopefully narrow down your search somewhat

I really doubt it. All my macbooks and even a Lenovo X200 sees the 5Ghz network if i use 149+ channels.
Only Samsung lame S4 (sic.) cant see the 5ghz network if such channels are used. either its a driver bug, or the 802.11n implementation in this device is botched.

1. Does your router have the latest firmware update ?
2. Wireless multimedia extensions enabled or disbaled ?
3. Latest i9500 firmware ?
4. Low power mode disabled on S4 via *#0011#

1. Yes router has the latest apple firmware. all apple devices and other laptops which are not apple work fine. only S4 does not.
2. Wireless Multimedia EXT cannot be selected on apple devices - the router has virtually zero wireless option configuration except for
Country, Channels and which wireless protocols to support. Currently the Apple routers are on Country: USA (i can only select Americas continent related countries (USA, Mexico, Braizl, Argentina, etc) as the router was bought in the US - all have the same channels numbers).
Needless to say iphone 5 (GSM EMEA), ipad 4 (European model, GSM) my lenovo X200 (europe model, Intel 802.11n WLAN) and my Macbook Pro (US Model) see all 5ghz SSID no matter what channel i select.
3. Latest i9500 per my local provider. i did not put any customer firmwares or stock which are not provided by the locals here.
4. Did not enable any power mode savings anywhere. the phone is like 14 days new

[Q] 5GHz WiFi on Nexus 10?

Okay, so we know that dual band WiFi is listed in the Nexus 10's tech specs, and I've had two Play Store tech support people confirm that it should indeed be 5GHz capable, but it just won't recognise or connect to my 5GHz network.
I've had 3 Nexus 10s now (all 32GB), and the behaviour below has been consistently observed on all of them, both in 5GHz only mode and Auto mode:
(The behaviour is identical on JVP15P, JOP40C and JOP40D)
- Does not show my 5GHz network in the network list
- Will not connect if the SSID and key are manually entered
- inSSIDer shows the 5GHz band as empty
I know this is not being caused by an issue with my network as I have half a dozen 5GHz capable devices all working on 5GHz without any problems at all, so my question is; has anyone successfully connected a Nexus 10 to a 5GHz WiFi network?
Thanks.
13 Jan 2013 - Just to update, it appears there could be ranges of channels the N10 will not operate on. These are 52-64 and 100-140. Channels outside theses range appear to work fine.
I would be especially interested to hear from anyone who has got an N10 working on channels 52-64 and / or 100-140.
Thanks.
I have a netgear router my nexus 10 connects to the 5gHz at 300 mbps

I have a BelkinN600 and switching to 5ghz is not an issue for me as well.
Do you have your Wifi frequency band settings on your N10 to run auto or strictly 5ghz? Maybe its checked at 2.4ghz?

Thanks for the replies.
jjdevega - I've tried this setting on both 'Auto' and '5 GHz only' and none of the 3 tablets I have recognise my 5GHz on either setting.
It seems improbable that I've got 3 tablets with exactly the same WiFi fault, so I'm rather stumped as to what's causing this.
Would both of you mind letting me know if inSSIDer shows your 5GHz networks in the spectrum view?
Thanks.
I can verify that 5 ghz works beautifully with the Asus NT-56 router as well.
Make sure the Channel Width (on the router) for the 5Ghz signal is set to 20Mhz, not 40Mhz or Auto.
5GHz worked swimmingly on my Nexus 10. Maybe it's an issue with your router?
It is a configuration problem on your own router if it is not working.
Yup getting the full potential of the 5ghz

Okay, I've been digging deeper into this and I've turned up something interesting.
None of the Nexus 10's I have here seem to work on the 5GHz channels numbered 100+
My network resides on 100 and 104 usually, and all my other 5GHz capable kit can use these channels just fine.
If I set my router to one of the lower channels (I can force the router to 36, 40, 44 and 48) then the the N10's see it fine.
Can I ask what 5GHz channels people are using? Does anyone have an N10 using channels 100+ ?
Thanks.
Mine is using channels 36 and 157. Both are Asus routers. I can see my neighbor's 5Ghz also on channel 157. Time to switch channels I guess.

Thanks, that's really interesting
I'm in the UK so can't use 157 - it's not a licensed channel here and so is disabled on the router Whereabouts are you?
It's curious though - all the channels that require dynamic frequency selection (and transmit power control in Europe) seem to be inoperable on the N10 (channels 52 - 64 and 100 - 140)
36 - 48 are only licensed for low power use, and don't quite provide the range I need. My router chooses 100 and 104 when set to auto and uses them at full power, and this provides the range I need. It's a shame the N10 doesn't seem capable of operating on those channels.
I'm in the States (Houston, TX). Unfortunately I can't use 100 or 104. I just moved my second router to 149, the lowest of the block of channels above 100 available here. I can't think of a way to test your scenario here. Hopefully someone from the UK will chime in.
I can't remember the exact conditions, but I was able to not have my 5GHz network shown on my Nexus 10 one time, and have it shown another. I was messing with channel frequency though, but can't recall numbers used.
Huh. I tried 5 ghz and it doesn't work. Why? Do you need a faster internet to make it work? Ours is 117 MB btw.

Internet speeds shouldn't affect it; it's what wireless channel your router is using for 5GHz that matters. May want to play around with different values.

No, those channels are all licensed for use in the US.
With 5GHz WiFi, a lot of the channels require the use of DFS as part of their usage license. These are 52-64 and 100-140. Because the selection of these channels must be dynamic you cannot force a standards-compliant router to use them, which is why they cannot be manually selected. They can only be selected by the router its self when it is in automatic channel selection mode. In Europe those channels also require the use of transmit power control (TPC).
It appears that the Nexus 10 will not operate on any of these channels, however the reason for this remains unclear.
That means the N10 seems to only operate on 4 of the 19 licensed 5GHz channels in Europe, and only on 9 of the 24 licensed channels in the US.
I haven't ever set mine to automatic. I manually set them to opposite ends of the spectrum, but I could try using auto to see what they do.

5GHz WiFi dropping

Anyone else having this issue? My tablet will randomly stop seeing my 5GHz network, other devices aren't having this issue, and it's still seeing 2.4GHz networks.

Try changing the channel manually in your router settings. Some mobile devices are really picky about this...same issue happens to my gf's Galaxy Nexus. I don't own this device yet, but this is some general advice that I'd try first.

Mine is similarly having trouble connecting to 5GHz networks from time to time. It seems that when the tablet set to 'auto' it stops scanning for 5GHz networks. If you manually set it to 5GHz it will immediately find the network. Hopefully there will be a bug-fix.
check your routers 5Ghz settings. Make sure you have it on a 20mhz channel if given the option as 40mhz or hybrid 20/40mhz will usually give you connection errors.

dont set auto, try manually and check router settings, it could be help to fix bug
Haven't connected mine to 5GHz on either of the dual band routers at my house. I always just use 2.4GHz with all of my devices. I'll try them both in little bit to see what my results are though.
Sent from my '13 Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
The issue I think is that 5GHz is not nearly as effective at maintaining a strong signal through obstructions like 2.4GHz is. I only get a 2 bar signal in a room on the other side of my router while I get a 4-5 bar connection strength with 2.4GHz in the same room.
I was having trouble with 5Ghz too (I was using 802.11a). In order to even get a stable connection, I had to change channels on the router. But as previously noted, it does seem that it has more problems with obstructions. I sometimes lost connection with just one wall between me and the router, but with 2.4Ghz, everything was fine.
I have never had this problem with my GS3 or with any other phone that I've used on 5Ghz.

I think higher frequency in general is harder to penetrate obstructions. Same with my 5Ghz on both my routers. Will have to change the channel to see if it helps my connections. I leave it on 'auto'
Not having any issue connecting to 5ghz band. It does get a little weak when upstairs but has not dropped.
I was seeing 25 MBS down the first time I connected to my 5ghz, and then it dropped it one day and never showed up until I reset my network and now I'm only getting 8, 12 if I'm lucky.

I would normally only get 8-15 on 2.4ghz on my tablet, and I when I went to my 5ghz network, it was set to auto on the channel width And for some reason it knocked off and I couldn't join again. After I reset it, I was only getting 6 mb on the 5ghz. I just changed it back to 20mhz channel width, and it's flying. 64mbps link speed, and 24mbps down, 2.80 up.

Did you find a solution? I have the same pproblem. This plus the unstable connection problem is making me miss my note 1
Found this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1675547 on 5ghz connection issues on Note 1 in Hong Kong. It describes channel limitation based on region. The file in my etc folder has ccode=GB which I assume is Great Britain. However, it allows the channels that my wifi router EA4500 is using on the 5ghz channel. So no luck on recognizing the 5 ghz network still.
I downloaed wifi analyzer and looked at my network. By default my router and I assume all the ones in my neighborhood use channel 1 on 2.4ghz. I just switched to channel 12 and there hasn't been any issue for the past hour i.e. no unstable connection warning from the phone. Just downloaded a 40MB file without any glitches at good speed. Will report back if the problem comes back.
Edit: Spoke too soon. Unstable connection warning back in a couple of hours. The interesting thing is that both my old Note 1 (N7000) and my wife's S4 can see and connect to the 5ghz SSID just fine and of course have no unstable connection notifications which seem to be an 'enhancement' in the note 3! Sigh Haven't even rooted the N9005 because of the knox flag or I would have played a bit with the wlan configs in the etc folder. Guess will have to wait for Samsung to come around to admitting a problem and then fixing it.
I've been having the same issue with my RT-AC66U.

go into your wifi settings and make sure that the third checkbox is not checked.
Name in french of this box is "Basculement réseau auto"...
With this setting enabled, my wifi is unstable even if the signal power is full.
Also make sure that you have the latest firmware on your router.
Try channel 48. Dont use those channels 160+, may not be supported.

Slow WiFi Speeds on Z5 compared to other devices

Over the past day or two I've noticed the download speeds on my Z5 to be slower than my other devices on WIFI. I'm not sure if it's cause and effect or just a coincidence but my phone fell 2ft/70cm when it slid off a table and fell onto timber flooring landing directly on it's back.
The phone has a case but I've done a factory reset and the problem still persists. Perhaps I've damaged the antennas but my mobile data appears to have had no change in speeds. The speeds varied on my phone over these 2 days ranging from 1-3mbps compared to the normal 6mbps i get.
Check your modem/router frequency that it use to send out the WiFi signal, and if you can change the frequency of your modem or router then change it to something else and do a Speedtest.
With a app called Wifi analyser you can see which frequency band is best to use when you connected to your Wifi.
If none of the above steps helps, then I have no idea what it could be, my Wifi works great anyway, getting 11 mb/s download speed from my modem.

Yep same as you, in addition if other devices are connected to the same band at slower speed they will also kill the speed of any other devices on that band

No the case won't affect this, in addition what are you actually talking about, your speed has gone to crap accessing files within your network, or are you talking about the internet. Because there are so many variables that can affect internet speeds, and a huge percentage of them are fully beyond your control.
I ran some speed tests at a friend's house to see what was going on and it seemed to show similar speeds against my friend's devices also connected on WIFI. I'm suspecting it to be a problem with my router but will run a few more tests with a borrowed router.
I am having problem with wifi, it says connected, but no internet access.
This is happening lately, mostly after last update .182
I don´t know but since then I have restarted my router for three times now, on laptop I don´t have any issues.
Speedtest gives me 219/200mbit/s on my z5 compact, could be better but it's acceptable for a phone

Other than home (which does not have any issue) I do not connect to other wifi. But on my recent travel, i've had the same issue as you connecting to various places which has wifi. I believe its due to router settings mostly.

I'm getting the opposite - mine's a disconnection issue. No WiFi connection issues but when I leave the house my E6653 sometimes fails to drop the WiFi connection for mobile data so I'm miles away with "Connected, No Internet" with a bang (!) next to the WiFi icon for my home SSID - far out of range! Turning WiFi off and on again sorts this out, i.e. mobile data connects instead.
Anyone else?
It seems fine for me but bluetooth and wifi on at the same time causes some imense lag.
Sent from my E6653 using XDA-Developers mobile app
My Z5 has BT on 24/7 (paired with smartwarch 3) and no WiFi lag.
Change channel on WiFi.
Channel 1 can mess up BT and vice versa.
I had to disable 5Ghz band on my router to connect a few ipcams. They do work now. But am I destined to have 5ghz band disabled if I want the ipcams to work?

Don't use same name on the the 2 networks, and make the ipcams connect to the 2.4GHz band.
Eg: 2.4GHz is named [email protected] and 5GHz is named [email protected]_5GHz, also disable band steering (if your router/ap supports it) if the cameras are supposed to be 5GHz "compatible" but actually don't work on it.

Cannot scan 5Ghz Dual band Wifi on Airplane Mode

Hi fellow S7 users,
Just like to asf if everyone with this handset are not able to find 5Ghz dual band wifi signal when Airplane Mode is On? I was able to scan the same dual band signal on other phones and tablets on other brands while on Airplane mode.
Is this normal to samsung or a known issue?
I just tested, I can still scan and connect to 5GHz Wifi on airplane mode.
Tried it again just now but still cannot scan and find my 5ghz wifi. My router has to ssid, 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz. When I'm on Airplane Mode, i can only scan the 2.4Ghz. Not sure if it depends on the router. I'm having TP-Link Archer C7.

Nah, nothing to do with the router.
Plus I have a TP-Link I have an Archer D9.
Maybe try setting it to a specific channel, not using auto channel.

My router setting is not set to automatic and I selected the channel manually. Will try to do some things on my router later.
I managed to make the 5Ghz wifi work while on airplane mode. I change the router channel (lower channel). I manually selected a higher channel previously but after changing to lower channel, it is fully working now.

I confirm this is the fix!
Im in Australia with an Optus-branded Galaxy S7 G930F.
And I found that when in Flight-mode, it doesnt detect any 5ghz WiFi channal above #48 !!!
So if you're having issues detecting 5ghz WiFi when in flight mode, just configure your router to use channel #48 or below.
I Have the same problem with my s7 edge. And i fix it with changing the region of wifi -

Your 'channel' setting is set to Auto...
So its likely that the router just happened to have Automatically chosen channel #48 or below.
The status in your router might tell you which channel is currently elected.
Or you can install a WiFi-analyser app on your phone so see what channel your WiFi is using.
@wildchill, no man i fix it. Just i change wifi region from bugarian to american
