[Q] error message while restoring nandroid - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
after i installed a new app (xposed framework) on my defy with quarx 2ndboot-nightly CM10-20130326-NIGHTLY-mb526.zip i got some problems and got stuck in a bootloop.
well i had made a nandroid backup and simply wanted to restore it. but neither the actual backup nor an older are restored
i always get after some time:
error while restoring /system
problem while restoring /system
any ideas? i really do not want to set everything up from scratch again.

I've had this problem a lot of times:silly:. I went to bootmenu and formatted system and data to ext4, then rebooted. After that I was somehow able to restore my backup.

Try restoring from adb. Google it, there are many guides.
EDIT - You can try this - Edit the ROM zip to delete files you don't need, flash the zip, then extract the files you changed from the system backup archive and paste in system using ES File Explorer and reboot.

well, in the end i installed from scratch via flashing,
i also tried to restore via adb but it did not recognize the nandroid-mobile.sh restore command.
google revealed that is not possible on cwm based recoverys? as far as i understood (no linux guy) nandroid is just a set of scripts, so i was missing that script?
anyway i could save some time with pulling aps and data via nandroid manager when i had a working system again. still i am a bit unsecure now concerning trying out stuff, fearing that i again would not be able to restore a nandroid backup

[Q] I can't restore my cwm backup, what should I do? [urgent, please help]

Hi,
I had a problem with my NDT miui nand buil recently, it was sticking on boot animation, so I made a backup via cwm, I saved the backup folder on my pc. Now I want to restore that backup. I tried all the usual methods for it, I did tas29, flashed new clk, and tried backup, still stuck on boot animation, I flashed my last rom and then tried to restore the backup, again stuck on boot animation. I did everything for it, but doesn't works for me. It does the restore process as usual, but I wan't to boot, my phone stuck in boot animation. So I beg you to help me with one of these alternatives, please.
-I only want to restore my contacts, call logs and sms. Anyway to restore them only? there are some .img files in backup folder, which one are these files stored?
-Is there anyway I can extract backups files on my pc and get my contacts,sms,... in it?
-If none of above works, is there anyway to install cwm on pc android emulator, and then restore my backup in it, and again get my contacts, sms there?
I will really be thankful of your helps

Are you using the correct partition size? Too small a partition normally causes the phone to hang at the bootanimation. If you have used the correct partition size and it still doesn't boot, try simply increasing it to account for any bad blocks you may have.
It's also possible that your backup is corrupted somehow, it happened to me once. If this is the case, try flashing the same ROM and then restoring the data partition in CWM.
When you rename backup file do not use spaces (exp. icsromv3)

I don't think that's the problem because if the ROM gets up to the bootanimation (after a Task29) then it's clearly been [somewhat] flashed correctly so it's probably down to the backup itself, or of course an error somewhere on his part.

Come on guys, this is common sense. If he made the backup with the rom ALREADY not booting up, no matter what he does, it'll always stick to the boot animation.
The back-up saves your ROM at its current state, not the one it was working at before. Backups should only be done when your ROM is actually fully functioning, not when it is broken. So unfortunately, you have to do what Nigel Suggested. Make a clean install of that ROM and then only restore the data partition.
You may be able to do the emulator thingy, but I'm not sure, you can give it a shot though.
For extracting something from your backup see appextractor or nandroid browser

Whoops, I should have read the OP more carefully
@OP Yeah, just fresh install then restore the data partition. I still don't understand why the other ROM isn't working though unless it's your fault somwhere

CWM restore failed : data.img not found

Hi everybody,
First of all I want to say thanks to this community because I found a lot of informations here and solved many problems I had.
I searched all the day and I don't know what to do with the issue I get now...
I decided to install JellyBlast V3 on my Galaxy Y GT-S5360. Before that I made a backup of my stock ROM with ClockWorkMod (v5.0.2.6) and then I installed JBV3.
All was allright and I wanted to restore my datas only from the backup with the CWM advanced restore. That didn't work (Maybe because I can't restore datas from a different ROM?)
So, I wanted to make a complete restore from the same backup to get all my datas back, but I get the following message :
"data.img not found. Skipping restore of /data
.android_secure.img not found. Skipping restore of /scard/.android_secure.
Restore complete!"
The phone can boot up but my datas are not restored at all.
I explored the backup folder and there is no "data.img"... but in some resolved threads I read people didn't have it neither... and I am a big optimist so I kept searching...
I tried to restore again but with another zip file of CWM (who resolve some bugs) I found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27475895
But It failed again with the same issue.
I read that if the kernel changed the restoring is not possible anymore so a previous kernel have to be installed (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27475895 )
To be sure, I installed a stock ROM with Odin by following this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1465800
I picked the S5360_XXKL3_OXXKL1_XXKL3 bundle.
Since I installed the fresh ROM I tried to restore datas again, but I got the same issue again...
So, I want to understand why I get this error ?
Maybe flashing with a stock ROM is not enought to replace the present kernel by the original one ?
Thanks for enlighted me (and sorry for my english)
By any chance is your CWM called gt-s5360CWM or something
You have to backup with a clean CWM and restore with the same clean CWM

Indeed, the first CWM I used to create the backup was "GT-S5360_CWM.zip" but the restore doesn't work.
The second CWM I tried is called "CWM_bla_bla.zip" and the restore failed with this one too.
I think the backup I made is not proper
Thank you for your help.
PS : if my backup is corrupted, is there a way to recover at least my contacts with a backup explorer or something ?
EDIT : I think my backup is definitely not good, I made another one with the "unbugged" CWM and It makes more files including a "data.rfs.tar" file...

HELP!!! :'( Restore only apps and data from nandroid?

Hey guys!
So yesterday, I installed the app 'Android Control Center'. I messed around with a few settings and ended up in a bootloop. I do not have anything backed up in Titanium backup. So I made a nandroid backup in the hope that id be able to restore my apps out of that by using nandroid manager, but all of my app data were not extracted from the nandroid. So now im planning to restore the nandroid backup and use TWRPs file manager to remove that apk and its data. Are there any other things I should do to fix this problem? Will this work??
Guys, any help is appreciated!!!
Hardly believe that app can cause your system into bootloop... anyway, if you want to try.
Titanium Backup can restore apps from Nandroid backup, preferably CWM tar backup. However, this function is currently having issues with Android 4.3, so if you want to reflash the ROM, pick ROM with 4.2.2.
I believe TWRP backup should also works, but I haven't try it before. If you need to use TWRP, do it without compression & encryption.
IMO your problem can be a simple fix by remove the faulty app and reflash the ROM.
just reflash your rom via recovery, dont wipe, you wont lose any data
Alright thanks for the response. I copied my TWRP backup to my PC, extracted it and now I'm trying to copy the data folder from my TWRP backup to my ROM's data folder. Hopefully, this will work.
PS - I removed the app and i reflashed the rom but that didn't seem to fix the problem.

[solved]can not restore after efs corruption (online nandroid/twrp)

hi !
i ran into a problem and i couldn´t find a working fix(if any) by myself, hope the community can help.
i had an issue with corrupted efs. i was able to restore efs from an older backup i made with twrp - phone is working again.
i then restored my latest backup which is made with the online nandroid backup app.
it restores but all my apps, settings - everything beside custom boot animation is gone.
when i open the backup in the nandroid backup manager manager, i am able to restore apps manually, so they are present in this backup.
in twrp, normally it says "backup completed". this does not happen, at the end of the process the ui resets(teamwin splashscreen showing) but no error is shown.
already wiped, flashed stock rom and twrp again with odin.
thanks for helping

it´s the international 9005, snapdragon.
i use x-note 6.0 rom.
problem solved.
it didn´t have anything to do with the efs corruption.
all online nandroid backups i made were faulty.
tried several things to make it work.
seems like reinstalling busybox finally fixed it.

can't extract apps from nandroid made otg with twrp

My phone was stuck in a bootloop where it could only get to recovery. Using the recovery I created a nandroid backup to the a USB stick using an OTG cable. I flashed the stock firmware and got things setup but I can't restore individuals apps from the nandroid. I copied the nandroid from the usb to sd card but it still doesn't work. I tried restoring apps using Nandroid Manager but when the app is launched it gives the error "app has stopped, close app". For some reasons sms succesfully restored but no user apps. I tried restoring with AppExtractor but it gives the error "unable to generate apk listing"
I also have titanium backup pro but couldn't get it to find the location of the nandroid to try extracting with it.
Any ideas? I really just want my messages back from Whatsapp.
My phone had stock Nougat with busybox installed and elementalx kernel. It should be the same environment now as when the backups were made.
@twoplustwo can you tell us why your phone went into bootloop ? If you know then you can restore /data from TWRP and revert the cause of bootloop..
Also can you confirm it's in capital letters as you have mentioned in small letters in another thread that twrp/backups rename them to TWRP/BACKUPS or move them to internal storage.. (in stock ROM if i am not wrong, TWRP folder is not accessible, so try to install custom ROM for temporary purpose, then move backup to internal and then try with titanium backup..)

yes it was in capital letters
the problem in the first place that sent the phone into a bootloop was I installed the OTA security update. I'm running stock rom but I guess because it was rooted and had busybox, that made it incompatible with the update?

If you have TWRP and take update, it don't cause bootloop, but it cause your device to boot into recovery when you turn on your device.. can you confirm if it was bootloop or problem of booting to TWRP ?
I am unable to copy the nandroid to internal storage. I tried using usb to computer and it just does nothing. I tried root explorer and it says 'copy failed' and file manager says 'cannot load'. This only happens with the TWRP folder inside the internal memory specifically.

I can confirm it was only booting TWRP. So even when I tried to boot to system it just booted to TWRP again.

You don't need to worry,
Do you have any important data for any app currently ?
Take backup of new important data with titanium.. (and then again take backup from TWRP, for safety )
And then simply restore /data from TWRP backup, it will give you older data back without any bootloop but you will loose new data/messages that you got after flashing/ on current running ROM..

Thank you sir! To confirm, when backing up to USB stick with OTG, does the format of the USB matter? Is fat32 safe?

Not familiar with different formats, it should work.. bu t
You can backup to internal storage too, since you don't have to flash fastboot ROM again..
