Nexus 7 won't auto rotate - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've visited the other threads but some of the circumstances seem unique to the person having the problem.
I myself was using my tablet as normal, coming out of a match in Modern Combat 4, and all of a sudden when going into the Sims Freeplay and I couldn't control any of my sims, for some reason they would all just stumble in place as if I had flipped the screen, I guess as a funny way of simulating me shaking their world around.
I thought it was a glitch in the game and so force closed and tried it again and still they messed around like I was flipping the screen around; after this I went back into Modern Combat 4 thinking that if there was an issue with the gyroscope it should reflect in the game too during a match but I'm able to use the gyroscope to freely aim and look in all directions and the same thing happened with Sonic 4 pt1 with tilting the screen to move around in the special stages.
My Nexus 7 is rooted with it's bootloader unlocked and I don't mind unrooting if need be to send it in since I'm still under Asus's warranty, but in the meantime I have Ultimate Rotation Control installed to force my tablet into either portrait or landscape, but I'd rather not have to rely on the app to do this, that and it causes a problem with The Sims Freeplay since I can't play it with it as I normally would before this problem.
I guess what I'm asking is what options do I have on trying to restore my tablets natural rotation? I've tried wiping the system and restoring backup data and that didn't work at all.

Make sure auto-rotation is enabled and temporarily disable your rotation app.

I made sure long before I resorted to using the app to force rotation, nothing changed.

Auto-rotate not working

Hi, today suddenly my phone didn't rotate the screen anymore when I rotated the phone to landscape. I had auto-rotate on. This problem had stayed for a while now and I have already rebooted my phone as well as turned off and on auto-rotate. I know the accelerometer is working because I used apps that use the accelerometer, so my guess is it's done software bug. I think it had happened before to me but briefly and it somehow got fixed. I'm wondering if this has happened to someone else and how you fixed it. Thanks!

If u were referring to it auto rotating in the home screen, the stock launcher doesn't not do it
No not the home screen, any screen (browser, Facebook, mail, etc..)

Try an app called ultimate rotate to force rotation in apps as a test

Way to read the OP.
This just happened to me....I have auto-rotate checked in accessability and display...any help would be appreciated.
Happening to me now as well. Not sure whats causing it :-/
Auto Rotate
It is happening to me as well.
I don't know if it pertains to you or no as mine is rooted and it does only on AOKP Rom.
For now what I had is to install Screen Orientation app. It lets you toggle Forced Portrait / Forced Landscape mode from notification bar.
And i have checked auto rotation enable in settings.
Open Instagram, it forces portrait..
help
This is happening to me right now but much worse, I've toggled, rebooted, wiped, reflashed, flashed old backups, different kernels, different roms I was originally running AOKP with faux kernel and my auto-rotate had been working fine then I downloaded temple run and I couldn't tilt from side to side, I would re-calibrate but every sensor app I download says that my; Accelerometer, compass, light sensor, proximity sensor, temp, gyroscope, gravity sensor, linear acceleration, and rotation vector sensor don't even exist, the apps say there not there. I have no idea what more to do to reset them or fix them, they were all working fine before and then they just stopped.
Any ideas or information would be appreciated, the last thing I'm going to try is a full Odin flash back to stock everything (if that is even available yet for the nexus 4)

i read something about losing sensors by using the 4.2.2 radio With a 4.2.1 Rom. anyways it's a documented issue. try going through the 4.2.2 threads. i believe that's where i saw it mentioned.
EDIT: here it is!

smacking it worked
read on another forum that "a decently hard smack" would correct it.
they were right, Its working again.
solved mine
in my case, it was an app called gravity screen. uninstalled it, reboot phone, and the auto rotate is enabled now

[Q] Nexus 7 gyroscope issue

I've had my 1st gen Nexus 7 for almost a year, got it in December as a Christmas present to myself and I've had a few problems ranging from the screen not rotating, to aiming issues in fps games and some random reboots, all of these problems usually fixed themselves or I fixed them through tips and guides online.
However this time I'm a little confused; My Nexus 7 last week had a minor issue regarding screen rotation for a day or two in which it seemed to have stuck either in portrait or landscape and it fixed it's self, although since then I still check by rotating my screen on it's 4 ends to check if it does this correctly because I'm paranoid like that.
Now my current issue is with the gyroscope I believe, in games that have the option to use it, I do like in Modern Combat 4, it makes it easier to aim than using the touch screen to manually aim and fire, before I was able to move the camera in every possible direction to aim my weapon and had no issue, although this time my problem is just that.
I try to aim and it lets me for a moment and then it wants to center it's self and then it's really difficult to move my tablet around to aim at all, although moving it really quickly in another direction fixes it, then I try to aim again and it gives me trouble moving the camera.
Not really sure what to do now as I've tried to do my usual things to fix it, and there are two ways I check to see if it's a major problem, I check Modern Combat 4 and see how the aiming is with the gyroscope enabled, and The Sims Freeplay, the reason I mention the Sims is because earlier this year when I was having gyroscope issues my sims would react as if I was flipping the screen from one landscape to the other and would constantly do this.
Also during this time my screen wouldn't rotate but after a week or two the issue somehow fixed it's self and it was fine until now, although the issue is just aiming in FPS games and my sims react just fine now as I can freely rotate my screen without a problem.

I direct you to the Google forum on the Nexus 7 Sensor (aka Gyroscope) problem.
Since I am brandy new on this forum, I can't actually post the URL here:
productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/nexus/GgnRFsw3o-Q%5B176-200-false%5D
There look to be about four or five different problems with sensors including the orientation/gyroscope sensor.

I've checked it out and it doesn't seem like many solutions helped, I'm under warranty so I may just send it in for repairs.

[5.1] Strange issue with auto-rotation (lock has no effect) sometimes

Just wondering if anybody else has this issue.
For some reason, when I set Auto Rotation to OFF (I.E. quick settings tile says "Portrait"), my Z will still auto rotate as normal in any app that usually does.
EDIT: It has started working now for me, after rebooting a few times, but I didn't really do anything special :\
EDIT2: It is random and recurring. However I "calibrated" accelerometer yesterday (26th November) by spinning the phone around a few times on all three axis, so far so good *fingers crossed*
Only apps like E.g. MX Player which have their own internal rotation lock ever work. Other apps like Chrome and Tapatalk and so on will still just ignore the setting and rotate automatically.
Does anybody else experience this on the stock Lollipop ROM? I have it in stock and also now in kamarush's 5.1.1 AOSP build. Possible hardware issue? I don't see how, though, that doesn't make sense!
Thanks in advance.

Having the same problem on my XZ1, it's a shi*** bug .. very very annoying bug .
Well mine has started working randomly, now, after rebooting a few times.
Very strange, I had this bug for a LONG time on stock ROM (but now I'm on a custom AOSP build).
At least I am not the only one who had the same issue, I thought I was going crazy
Only real thing I did was toggle the Auto Rotate setting under Settings > Accessibility (not Display) a few times, didn't solve it but I have rebooted since. Maybe it's just a broken Setting that needs to be switched off > reboot > switch on > reboot > repeat this process until it starts working?
Started happening again. I played with Auto Rotate toggle a few times, now it's the opposite - no matter the setting it will NOT rotate!
I think this issue is specific to kamarush's AOSP build, though. Stock didn't do this.

I have the opposite problem. Phones set to auto rotate but won't rotate.

Yeah, mine sometimes does either way. Right now though, it's working perfectly.
What I did was "calibrate" my accelerometer. This is simply done by rotating the phone on all three axis several times (x, y, z) I.E. rotate the phone several times in all three directions. This might have solved it for me, or could be a coincidence.

Yeah its not always just randomly. Especially when I'm watching YouTube. Thanks for the tip though. I shall give it a try
Yep was random for me too, but so far so good after I spun my phone around on all axis. Fingers crossed. Never had to do this before, though, so it's pretty weird!

Dead sensors? [not any more!]

All of a sudden yesterday, my trusty old Nexus 10 stopped auto-rotating. Apps that have a fixed orientation will work and rotate the screen, but then the screen stays in that orientation until an app with a different fixed orientation is launched. I downloaded a couple sensor checking apps, and it seems the gyroscope/compass/acceleremeter are just dead. It doesn't register anything at all on the apps. I'm guessing it's just the result of age (no "trauma" to the device such as a drop or anything). Any similar experiences, or thoughts on repairing? I doubt I'll replace the tablet anytime soon, it's really just a media consumption device at this point, though a couple of the games I played used the gryo/accel. My initial thought is it's just time to let it go, use it for what I can, then provide a proper burial when it totally dies.

probably your sensor is dead(could you try to install some app that display all sensors informations? you should find that easily on the play store).
could you also tell us what is your ROM ?
I'm running the current official LMY49F, but rooted.

Hm indeed your issue should not happen( I think) with lollipop.
MM had some issues with sensors but since you are on lollipop ...
Hehe, well then you should flash a rom with a QS tile to rotate hehe.
LOL, probably not going to mess with flashing a new ROM. Like I said, I only use it for media consumption and some light gaming...nothing that "needs" the gyro, so I'll just live with it until it totally dies
Huh, son a gun. Just flashed the Feb Nexus update via fastboot, and low and behold, it lives again! Looks like it was software related after all.

touch registration issues

I thought it might be a sensitivity issue because I'm coming from a N6 where I barely touch the screen and it registers. I did some testing and turned on show visual feedback for taps in developer options and I started tapping on the screen in random places every 2 seconds and on average every 5th tap it didn't register and sometimes it's the second and I had issues sometimes where 3-4 taps in a row in different places wouldn't register. For me it's not isolated to certain parts of the screen like many people have found, for example only on edges.
My sample size isn't very much but I've figured out that the majority (or only UI elements because I haven't tested enough) tapping on or around UI elements such as toggle settings in the developer options, any app (swiping/scrolling in apps too) that this issue occurs. When I moved an app icon to create a new screen and started testing I never had any registration issues(visual feedback for taps and long pressing to bring up the wallpapers/widgets/home settings intermittently between taps)
So is this a hardware issue, software UI or maybe a mix of both? I don't know enough about touch screens and android. I don't want to RMA if it's software but I do if it's a hardware issue. Does anyone have any insight on this?
So I did a factory reset and it's working perfectly now. I don't know what was causing it but it's good to know it wasn't hardware
I have the same issue, fingers crossed the upcoming update will fix this.. Mostly its a software issue (or hoping so), but I've seen few complaining about this..
I have the same issue. Its most likely a software issue that can be addressed through an update.
Mine seems to come and go. Sometimes it's fine; sometimes I'm having the same issues you're describing.
I was thinking last night it seemed like every once in a while a double tap is required, after idling for a few seconds. This to me sounds like a driver issue that could be fixed.
Today however I'm thinking it might have something to do with cold dry fingers, as I was having it outside but it's totally fine now indoors.
Can't really put my finger on it yet. Gonna give it a few more days before I think about an RMA.
Any of you guys using SwiftKey beta?
edit: are you on 8.0 or the 8.1 preview?
Just got my xl today and I have this issue. It's just randomly around the screen and not in any specific area.
I believe my phone is not recognizing vertical sliding if it is diagonal, versus the same diagonal slide on my 6p is recognized. Not sure why this is happening but I believe it is intentionally being done because if I touch same spot and closer to vertical up and down, it recognizes it.

I am using swiftkey Beta on 8.0 and all functioning great
I don't know if this is related but I've been using accubattery and after I did a factory reset I didn't install it at first and everything was working great then I installed it and after awhile I noticed the issue come up again. I uninstalled it about an hour ago and did testing and the issue is gone.
I'm on 8.0
Issues came back even with accubattery uninstalled
I have the same problem. When trying to scroll a web page in Chrome, I have to touch twice to get the touch to register. Also having trouble with the long presses.
I'm on 8.0
I have Swiftkey (not beta)
I do not have Accubattery
I'm having major issues with this all of the sudden today. Something isn't right. Ugh - one issue after another.
I made a video of my issues:

Sometimes, when trying to scroll a web page in Chrome beta, I have to touch twice to get the touch to register. Saw this on 8.0 and now on 8.1.

That's horrible. I opened my gboard in chrome and it doesn't do that for me but it will do that swiping/scrolling, randomly typing and with GUI elements sometimes. Multiple times in a row to where i have to just stop tapping and wait a second or two and tap again.
I'm going to try using the 8.1 dev preview to see what happens
I'm having this issue too

I get the same thing while typing, i'll think i tapped something (because I know i did) but it won't register. Extremely annoying and all 3 phones I've gone through had the same issue, getting tired of RMAing
I mainly get this problem with gboard and the home button. It will double click a lot when I only touch once

I'm also seeing this randomly as well! This is my biggest bug right now...
I installed the 8.1 dev preview and right off the bat it's working perfectly but let's see what happens in the next few hours. I don't understand why it's fine then all of a sudden not. It's completely ridiculous
Make sure you guys are enabling "show taps" under input in the developer options because when you tap and the visual feedback doesn't show then it's not registering. Enabling "pointer location" helps make it more obvious also
