Modifying my old laptop's case?

Alright, So I've got an old Compaq Presario v5000. The hinges are broken on it. I've been debating whether to get a new laptop for X-mas or build a good PC for the same price. I've come to the conclusion of disassembling the laptop, and creating a case from a good material, possible a sheet of aluminum. I know a welder, and I can get him to weld the case together wit an opening and a mount to put the motherboard and screen in. After doing this, I could have something like a portable All-In-One PC. Does anyone have some feedback, advice, or resources for me? Also, I'd be taking the Touchpad and Keyboard away from the motherboard and putting in a USB hub or buying the wireless Logitech Keyboard/Mouse to control it.
It's not worth it. I would honestly just pick between the new desktop or the new laptop because what you're going to be building will most likely end up being immobile anyways. So you could get a new laptop and then go ahead with this idea and instead put it in a casing like a desktop computer for home. That's what I would do.

Netbook + lap= tablet

Hello fisrt of all sorry for my english
I saw the noob video and i will be as brif as i can, also y serch this everywere and nothig.
The thing is: i have 1 old laptop (Compac presario v3000 screen 14.1" screen) it is dead, and a gateway netbook (10.1" screen), i have the idea tu turn the screen of de v3000 and the components of the netbook into a tablet pc. so the first question is it a good idea? or just use all the things of netbook? just to know wich capacitive touch screen buy 14.1 or 10.1, the second problem in my country (Mexico) i can´t find a place where to buy just online un US stores, but the only kit I found is the " Hoda tecnology kit, but it like desaper because everywhere i serch for it´s out of stock, can anyone knows a webpage to buy it?
and the second part that I think is a little harder is the acelerometer, I found a tuto in mydell that can help, but i dont found the material, so is there a way to use the acelerometer of a wiimote or a wiimotionplus accesori? or and old smarthphone acceletometer, and put it in my proyect?
I know i´m a total noob and this are s**pid questions but any help in my little project will be apreciated. Thanks.
BTW, sorry if this post doesnt goes here
You dont need a accelerometer for a tablet to work. The "tablet" would be bulky. Easier/smarter to sell laptop and buy small tablet. You should install ubuntu on it and learn linux - make a webserver with old laptop. Tablets kinda suck imo.

Android MHL Extension Dock (Android as PC)

Hello everyone!
I just started working on a small project and would like to hear what you people think about it.
The idea of the project is simple. Create a dock for your smartphone, which basically extends its usability to a full fledged laptop or PC.
All the new phones mostly have MHL (11pin) connectors which means connecting it to an HDMI screen is not a problem. Also, a use of a wireless mouse and keyboard is quite simple and very functional.
So what I am thinking of creating is sort of a laptop with a 13.3 inch screen, a keyboard (maybe even removable to use separately) and a battery to power the LCD.
I have already been in contact with producers of LCDs and control boards, and believe I should start creating the prototype soon.
So what are your thoughts about it?
Do you have any ideas?
Thank you and have a good day!
*to mod: if this is in the wrong section I apologize and kindly ask you to move it to the appropriate section of the forum or message mo to put it somewhere else. Thank you1

Man this is great
I have been thinking about it for some time ... to make my phone a laptop whenever i need to have me a laptop
My solution was to find a virtual machine that runs inside my phone for any type of os ... the problem is the memory !!! Also the app i didnt find it yet
Well bro good luck
If i were you i would take advantage of screen casting instead of lcd monitor so in case the user wanna use the device screen or the tv !!! You can also sell a mini hdmi thing ( the hdmi stick that lets you cast your screen into tv )
Also there is a keyboard and mouse as one piece and their small and great could take them with you everywhere in ... i saw it amazon for 35$ or less something like that with Bluetooth connection. ... im sure you can find a way to do some mod for those keyboards and make them yours ... good luck and keep us posted
A great idea!

Need help: repurpose old android screen as secondary touch monitor (wired)

I've a galaxy tab 2 7.0 which is beyond repair and hard bricked, I was wondering if I could use it's display and touch as a secondary monitor for windows, with a reasonable response time, for productivity. It would be a tremendous help.

Please read the post before reply. Device is hard bricked. Software solution not applicable. Hardware solution required.
You probably already gave up on this, but I am answering this so other people get at least sortof an answer.
For the display alone you could try to use a display driver board (Just google for "make your own monitor, DIY LCD controller board" Sadly can't post links yet..)
Will be hard as soldering to the connectors of the display is annoying/nearly impossible.
Next would be touch, and there you would also need to find a driver board (designing this yourself is way out of the scope usually) and then calibrate the coordinates. (Probably okay under linux/unix, next to impossible under windows)
Overall cost would probably surpass what you would pay for a cheap, new device which could run a software solution. (which would be more portable and cleaner looking.)
If you are a linux user, you can tether the tablet to your pc, get a vnc server running on it and then stream the feed via ADB over the usb-cable to your tablet. (ADB can connect ports from your tablet to your labtop and vice versa). This means that you dont have to pay anything for an app, and also do custom stuff like just sharing certain parts of the screen to the tablet etc...
